Alexander Smythe Migrant Youth Vision Project Team, Multicultural Development Australia Alex studied International Relations and has worked in a number of roles supporting migrants’ settlement in Brisbane. Ailsa LamontDirector and Founder, Pomegranate Global

Ailsa has 30 years of experience in international relations and capacity building, including almost 20 years in the international education sector. Benjamin Law writes books, TV screenplays, columns, essays and feature journalism. Author of the memoir The Family Law (2010), travel book Gaysia: Adventures in the Queer East (2012) – both nominated for Australian Book Industry Awards – and the Quarterly Essay 67: Moral Panic 101 (2017).

Benjamin has a PhD in creative writing from QUT and has written for over 50 publications in Australia and beyond, including the Guardian, the Australian and the Australian Financial Review.

The Family Law is now also an award-winning TV series for SBS, which Benjamin created and co-writes.

Bridget Woods Director Tourism and Events, Townsville enterprise

Professor Bronwyn Fredericks has over 30 years of experience working in and with the Tertiary sector, State and Federal Governments and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-based organisations.

Ms Carol Doyle has been an executive member of Study Cairns since 2007. Study Cairns is the lead agency for international education and training in the Cairns region and represents all sectors of the industry from education institutions and providers, tourism partners and student support services.

In this role, Ms Doyle leads the organisation to undertake and deliver three key areas of focus for the region’s international education and training industry, namely: Sustainable growth; Brand awareness and Stakeholder support.

Ms Doyle has extensive VET senior management experience in Australia in both the domestic and international sectors. She currently runs a nationally Registered Training Organisation, YouSTUDY, a Distance Education College, as well as her own consultancy to the VET sector in the areas of industry compliance and registration, and the development of eLearning resources . Ms Doyle is a member of the Queensland International Education and Training Advisory Group (IETAG), bringing diverse industry voices and guidance to government.

Donna Cook Academic Manager, English Language Programs, Australian Catholic University

Donna is an educator and leader in the ELICOS, with over 20 years’ experience in Schools, ELICOS and Higher Education sectors, both in Australia and overseas. She has led academic management and teaching teams to design innovative programs and courses. She is currently the Academic manager ACU Centre for Languages Brisbane.

Donna is currently on the Board of English Australia as a general delegate. She has recently led the application for Queensland Government (TIQ) partnership funds for the “Raise your Voice” Consortium on behalf of the Queensland branch of English Australia, and was also involved with the application for funds to establish the Rainbow Hub. During her three years as QLD State delegate to the English Australia Board she was involved in organising English Australia Queensland Branch events, including the annual PD Fest, and was the Program Committee Convenor for the English Australia Conference 2015. Her skills and interest include community engagement, leadership, effective communication, teacher training and curriculum development.

Donna’s education includes a Bachelor of Economics and a Dip. Ed from The University of Sydney and An MA (TESOL) and A Masters of Education (Adult Education) from the University of Technology Sydney.

Greg Scott General Manager, Industry Development, Education New Zealand

Greg joined ENZ in November 2014, combining a career as a chartered accountant with leadership roles in education in both the tertiary and secondary school sectors.  Greg was previously a principal lecturer and international dean at university level, education sector lead for NZTE and the director of an international college in Christchurch, during which time he led a range of international growth initiatives for the school and the development of the school sector strategic roadmap for ENZ.

As General Manager, Industry Development, Greg leads a team of business development and project managers who support New Zealand international education providers to achieve sustainable growth for the benefit of all New Zealanders.

Greg has B.Com and MBA degrees, a post-graduate Diploma in Teaching and retains his CA membership with the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants. He is based in ENZ’s Christchurch office and is married with three young adults at various stages of their own education.

Gus Balbontin IETU, Innovator in Residence

Gus first came to Australia as back packer from a small town in Argentina and later received his MBA. Gus is the former Executive Director and Chief Technology Officer at Lonely Planet. His combined background in investing, advising and founding new start-ups, gives Gus a unique perspective on disruption and innovation. He led the charge with Lonely Planet to tackle the digital revolution

and muscle through a decade of disruption by developing products and technology platforms that contributed to the revolution in travel and media. Gus talks of business disruption and transformation, plus the successes and failures of industries that continuously go through significant reinvention.

Jermaine Rusike Queensland International Student Advisory Panel Member

Jermaine is an international student from Zimbabwe who is extremely passionate about the rights and wellbeing of international students. He is a penultimate law student who chose to study on the Gold Coast to pursue his ambition of becoming an international human rights lawyer. In his spare time, Jermaine enjoys debating, socializing and meeting new people.

Jonathan ChewDirector, Nous Group

Jonathan’s expertise is in policy design, market analysis, strategy and evaluation with a focus on the VET and higher education sectors.

As Director at the Nous Group, Jon works extensively with governments, universities and training organisations to understand and meet student, community and industry expectations, both in Australia and overseas.

Jon has worked with a large number of tertiary education and training providers to investigate levels of unmet demand for education and training, benchmark delivery profiles, review market strategies, and identify opportunities for expansion and growth.

Josh Alexander Josh Alexander moved to Central Queensland University (CQU), Rockhampton after completing the International Baccalaureate in Namibia. While pursuing a Bachelor of Information and Technology, he actively seeks adventure, taking part in various sports, hiking and engaging in community events. Josh has also worked in several orphanages, and child support programs teaching those in need, valuable life skills. He believes in making the most of his life by trying to experience new things, by exploring all aspects of life and meeting a variety of individuals. Josh’s passion for adventure and thirsty to improve the community made the move from Africa to Australia a natural fit.

Kathleen NewcombeCEO, Sarina Russo Group

Kathleen has over thirty years of experience in the Higher Education, Vocational Training and Recruitment sectors both in Australia and the USA. Kathleen also spent three years in leadership roles in the Insurance industry where she successfully managed a Health Insurance business catering to the International Education sector.

Kathleen is currently a Council Member of King’s College at the University of Queensland, the QLD Director of the Australian Committee for Private Education and Training (ACPET) and is a Consortium Member of gen[in] which is part of the Shaping Queensland Entrepreneurs Project.

A passionate advocate for lifelong learning, Kathleen holds qualifications in Education and Business. She has also sought to further her skills and knowledge through professional development programs at Harvard Business School, University of Florida and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

In 1997, Kathleen was honoured to receive the Education Faculty Outstanding Alumni Award from Queensland University of Technology for her contribution to education and training. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Managers and Leaders and has been awarded Life Membership of ACPET for her contribution to the advancement of education and training in Australia.

Kevin Brett is an international education consultant with 30 years’ practice in different states, territories and sectors. Now Director of Colmhall Consulting, Kevin manages bespoke quality assurance and research projects for higher education clients.

Previously, as Director, i-graduate Australia (2008 - 2017), Kevin oversaw i-graduate’s work with universities and other higher education providers, peak education bodies and government

departments, enabling institutional, state and national benchmarking and analysis of the student experience. He continues to provide advice as a Senior Associate.

Working in international higher education since 1985, he has expertise including program design and implementation of education and development programs, transnational education delivery, student mobility initiatives and quality assurance. Kevin also has experience across project management, research commercialisation, business development, student recruitment and client relationship management.

Leanne CoddingtonChief Executive Officer, Tourism and Events Queensland

Leanne Coddington has dedicated her career to the tourism and hospitality industry, including more than 20 years in senior roles at Tourism and Events Queensland.

Leanne currently holds one of the industry’s most senior and high-profile jobs – CEO of Tourism and Events Queensland – where she leads the state’s tourism marketing, experience development and major events agency to achieve its vision of ‘inspiring the world to experience the best address on earth’.

Leanne is an Adjunct Professor, UQ Business School, The University of Queensland; a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management; and a graduate with the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD).

Having completed post-graduate degrees including an MBA, Leigh as the Chief Operating Officer at BROWNS focuses to ensure the efficient, compliant and resourceful delivery of student experiences and learning environments.

Lyndell Jacka Head of Research Services at IDP Education

She has over 15 years’ experience in local and global market insight, across a range of service industries. In her current role, she oversees a wide range of primary and secondary market research in international education and English language testing. 

Key areas of expertise include student buyer behaviour research, industry and environmental analysis and statistical reporting.

Marita Cheng Founder and CEO, Aubot

Marita Cheng is a technology entrepreneur, advocate of women in technology and winner of the 2012 Young Australian of the Year.

Marita founded Aubot (formerly 2Mar Robotics), a robotics company who make a telepresence robot, Teleport, for kids with cancer in hospital to attend school, people with a disability to

attend work and to monitor and socialise with elderly people. As well as telepresence robots, Aubot currently invests in research and development in robotic arms, virtual reality and autonomous mapping and navigation.

Marita was born in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. She graduated from high school in 2006

Melissa Banks Pro-Vice Chancellor, International James Cook University

Melissa Banks is the Pro Vice Chancellor International at James Cook University and Chairs the Board of Directors of James Cook University College. Melissa provides leadership and oversight of JCU’s international engagement, including partnerships and collaborations, agreements, student exchange, international student support and international student recruitment.

With over twenty-five years of experience in multiple education sectors and service providers, Melissa is an experienced leader in international education with proven abilities to build and manage high performance teams, and devise and implement business growth strategies to achieve challenging internationalization objectives and targets. Melissa has held senior positions in three Australian Universities, provided consultancy services in international education services, and led major research projects in her capacity as Head of research at IDP Education Pty Ltd.

Melissa has contributed to national and international forums and publications throughout her professional career with 17 articles located on the Database of Research in International Education http://opac.acer.edu.au/IDP_drie/index.html. She is best known for her work in global student mobility, outcomes and impacts of international education in Australia, student retention and transition, Australian transnational tertiary education, and institutional internationalisation strategies.

Melissa is the Vice President of the International Education Association Australia (IEAA), and recipient of the prestigious award for Distinguished Contribution to the Field of International Education (IEAA).

Navdeep PasrichaCEO, iYouth

Navdeep Pasricha has presented to 15,000 people in 5 countries on youth entrepreneurship. Through this he discovered that regional educators have to pay so much more to access the same professional development as their urban peers.

Nishan DavidCo-Founder & Director, Bloodless; Former Westpac Future Leader Scholar

Nishan David co-founded Bloodless, a creative collective working at the intersection of storytelling, design and social change and launched Adappt, a social purpose app development program for young Australians, in 2013. Nishan is passionate about unleashing the creativity of young Australians for good and has a decade of experience speaking to young people on behalf of organisations

such as World Vision and Oxfam, Nishan continually seeks fresh ways to engage his generation with justice and equality.

From 2016-2017 he was a Westpac Future Leader Scholar, conducting research on design, technology and human rights at the University of Sydney. In 2018 he will continue his research at the University of Cambridge. His work has been featured in Dumbo Feather, Vogue Australia, Pedestrian TV, Peppermint Magazine, The Australian and The Renegade Collective.

Hon. Phil HoneywoodChief Executive Officer of the IEAA

Phil has been IEAA’s Chief Executive Officer since November 2011. Previously, he was a Member of the Victorian State Parliament (1988–2006), Minister for Tertiary Education, Training and Multicultural Affairs (1996–1999) and Deputy Leader of the Opposition (2002–2006). Since retiring from politics, Phil worked at Stott’s Business College and Cambridge International College.

Rebecca Hall is the Executive Director, International Education and Training, Trade and Investment Queensland. In this role, Rebecca leads the implementation of the government’s International Education and Training (IET) Strategy to Advance Queensland 2016-2026.

Rebecca’s career in international education was sparked by her experience as a JET Programme participant in 1996. Since returning to Australia in 1998 she has contributed her skills and

Over the past decade, her not-for-profit board experience includes appointments to the boards of International Education Association of Australia (IEAA), Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) Queensland Branch and the Queensland Overseas Foundation (QOF). She is currently Deputy Chair of AFS Intercultural Programs Australia.

Rebecca holds a Bachelor of International Business Relations and a Master of International Relations. She is also a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. In 2017 Rebecca was awarded the International Education Association of Australia’s (IEAA) Leadership Award for her contribution to the sector. She is mum to Emi ( 19) and Mia (11).

Robin DickProgram Manager Social Innovation, Central Queensland University

Robin Dick has spent 20 years in the social innovation sector, working in both the UK and Australia. As a community master-planning and leisure consultant in the UK he worked with low-socioeconomic, disadvantaged and diverse communities to drive sustained outcomes in health, wellbeing, economic, service and infrastructure change, including the creation of social enterprises.

Since arriving in Australia in 2006, Robin has continued to apply his social innovation work in the education, community and not-for-profit sectors.

Robin is currently Program Manager Social Innovation at CQUniversity where he works within a small team to embed social innovation principles, practice and philosophy across its curricular, extracurricular and community engagement activities. iChange, the University’s online, social innovation orientation program, was designed and project-led by Robin, with collaboration and support from a multi-disciplinary internal team, and external community partners. Robin is currently a Board member of Queensland Social Enterprise Council.

Professor Sarah Todd Vice President (Global), Griffith University

Professor Sarah Todd commenced at Griffith as Pro Vice Chancellor (International) – now Vice President (Global) – in late 2013, having previously been at the University of Otago in New Zealand.   

As well as leading Griffith’s internationalisation activities, Professor Todd is currently President of APAIE (Asia Pacific Association of

International Education), and Chair of the Universities Australia International Committee.  In addition, she is an appointed member of the Queensland Government’s International Education and Training Advisory Group (IETAG), providing advice to the Deputy Premier and Queensland Government; an invited member of the Australian Government’s Council for International Education - Marketing and Collaboration Working Group, supporting action under the National Strategy for International Education 2025 to enhance national coordination in marketing and promotion; and serves as a board member of the IRU (Innovative Research Universities) International Committee, International Education Association of Australia (IEAA), and Study Gold Coast; and is a member of the Association for Commonwealth Universities (ACU) International Steering Group.

Professor Scott BowmanVice-Chancellor and President, CQUniversity Australia

Professor Bowman began his professional life as a radiographer. Along with his professional qualifications in this area, he also holds Masters Degrees in Politics and Business Administration and a PhD in clinical decision making. Since moving to Australia he has held senior positions at Charles Sturt University, the University of South Australia and James Cook University. In August 2009 he was appointed the Vice-Chancellor and President of CQUniversity Australia. Under his leadership CQUniversity is now ranked among

the top 2% of universities worldwide, and has the most extensive geographical footprint of any university in the country with more than 20 physical delivery sites across mainland Australia.

Professor Bowman also led CQUniversity through the successful 2014 merger with Central Queensland TAFE, making education history in Queensland, and together more than 175 years combined experience in the delivery of education and training, and establishing Queensland’s first truly comprehensive university.

CQUniversity is the only Australian university to be recognised as an accredited Changemaker campus by global social innovation group Ashoka U. Shannon Willoughby is the Chief Executive Officer and Committee Secretary of Study Gold Coast, the peak industry and city marketing body for the Gold Coast’s education and training sector. 

Holding a Bachelor of Communication from Bond University, Shannon is a former senior journalist at the Gold Coast Bulletin.

Also the former long-term president of Young Professionals Gold Coast, Shannon is infinitely passionate about the Gold Coast and has been a leader in drawing attention to the city’s issues and potential.

Shannon is currently Councillor for the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland’s (CCIQ) Gold Coast Regional Policy Council and board member of Ohana for Youth, Gen-Z Employment and Regional Development Australia. Shannon also sits on the Regional Community of Practice, led by the State Government’s International Education and Training Unit Queensland.

She leads a team at Study Gold Coast which is committed to enhancing the student experience, creating employability opportunities for all Gold Coast graduates, retain talent on the Gold Coast and attract new students to call the Gold Coast their home during their education and training.

Tahlya BorehamGriffith student, 3 Day Startup Roundup, Emerging entrepreneur

Tahlya Boreham is a proud Aboriginal Women from the Bundjalung tribe in Tenterfield, New South Wales. As a third-year student studying a Bachelor of Business in Entrepreneurship & Self-Employment and a Bachelor of International Business in International Management at Griffith University. Tahlya’s passionate about exploring entrepreneurship & innovation through understanding the gaps in the market whilst working towards finding her passion in the industry.

She strives to make an impact in closing the gap for her indigenous people, inspire women to become world class leaders in business and is currently working-hard to achieve a successfully renowned international empire in the future. Last year in July, Tahlya travelled to Austin, Texas for an entrepreneurship conference called the “3 Day Start-Up Global Round Up”, where she talked on a panel about international entrepreneurship and the differences in innovation across the four corners of the globe. In December 2017, Tahlya spent 1 month in East-Timor with an organisation called “Project Everest”, which looks to set up social enterprises in developing countries to target the world’s

complex issues through adopting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Whilst there she completed an assessment on the agricultural industry with 3 women in different industry fields. The innovation and entrepreneurship involved in creating a product or service to better the quality of life for others within the community is a driving factor to why I want to be my own boss.

Tahlya is driven by this session as it’s a conversation that should have been discussed decades ago, by allowing women into these chosen pathways, teaching innovation & entrepreneurship not only at university level but introducing these ideas from a young age like in the United States of America.

Will ArcherAdviser, Association of Commonwealth Universities, Innovator in Residence, Government of Queensland

Queensland Inaugural IET Innovator In Residence, Will has built multiple disruptive businesses in international education and employment.  The processes he developed for education enhancement and recruitment were adopted by 1300 education providers in 30 countries and by 600 major corporations.  By 2012 his global benchmark for the student experience had taken direct

feedback from 2.3 million students worldwide. 

Will is an alumnus of the University of Oxford and London Business School, a member of Chatham House, a Fellow of the RSA, Non-Exec Chair of Tokyo-based strategy house GTF and an advisory board member of the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education.
