Introduction
What is an eBook?
An eBook (or electronic book) is an electronic or digital
equivalent of a conventional printed book and can be
read on a computer.

Introduction
The NHS Scotland e-Library currently provides
access to more than 5000 eBooks. The
collection contains subscription titles which
require an Athens username and password and
also a range of freely available books.

Introduction
A wide selection of titles are available, both clinical and
non- clinical, covering subjects such as Allied Health,
Medicine, Social Care, Management, Education and
Personal Development.

Accessing eBooks
Before accessing eBooks it is advisable to logon to the e-Library with your Athens username and password.

In the navigation bar, click the Books link for browsing and searching eBooks.

Accessing eBooks
Browsing the books can be done A-Z by title.
You can search eBooks from here, using either title, subject or author keywords.

Accessing eBooksWhen browsing, your chosen letter will appear here, with options to browse further within that specific letter
Navigation between pages can be done using the forward and back arrows

The More arrow link will give you full details of the book, including keywords
Once you have located your title, you simply click it to open it in a new window

Accessing eBooks
When searching, your original term will appear in the search box at all times
Again, you can either open the title directly by clicking it, or check the full record using the More link
The results appear in a ‘Tree’ format down the left hand side, when you click the eBooks option, the results will be displayed down the right hand side of the screen

OVID’s Books@OVID service offers access to over
50 key medical, nursing and pharmacy titles.

MD Consult provides access to over 70 of the
world’s most renowned reference books

NetLibrary
NetLibrary provides the majority of our subscription
based eBooks with access to over 4000 titles.

Browse for books by Title or by Subject.

OVID
Main navigation of eBooks is undertaken in the column down the left-hand side of the screen, with selected sections being displayed in the larger right-hand column.
The chapter titles of the book can be viewed in the left-hand column, sections can be expanded by clicking the [+] icons, and minimised clicking the [-] icons. Once chapter headings are fully expanded, you can open the required section by clicking its
title.
You can also search the text within your selected eBook

OVIDThe contents of each page of your eBook will be displayed in this large right-hand column of the webpage, which the navigation tree still displayed on the left, enabling you to know where you are in the book.
From here you can Save, Print and Email relevant chapters

From the Main Search page you can use the Natural Language search to find answers to clinical questions. You can also limit your search to specific books.
You can also search other fields such as Keyword, Author and Title.

OVIDResults are highlighted in yellow.
Results are organised by relevance using the Star system.
Click on OVID full text or Complete Reference to view more details.

Be sure to select the link for ATHENS users when verifying your password details

You will be asked if you want to view the Core Collection, or the Pain Collection. To ensure you optimise the resources available, you should click the Select All option, before pressing the Continue button.

Books are listed alphabetically by Author but you can also sort them by Subject speciality.
Click on the Books tab to view the full list of titles.

MD Consult also enables you to search the text within the chosen book
MD Consult is visually similar to OVID, and offers the same functions for Saving, Printing and Emailing chapters.
Navigation is again in the left-hand column, using the [+] and [-] buttons

You can also refine your search to Diagnosis, Etiology, Treatment or Prognosis, using the Focus pull-down menu.

As with OVID and MD Consult, the navigation appears in the left-hand column, with a PDF of the selected pages shown on the right.Navigation is done using the same [+] and [-] icons seen previously.
Navigate between pages using the Previous and Next buttons or go directly to a specific page.
