Emirates Global Aluminium PJSC (“EGA”) is a jointly-held, equal-ownership company formed by Mubadala Development Company of Abu Dhabi and Investment Corporation of Dubai by combining their respective aluminium industry assets. EGA’s core operating subsidiaries are Dubai Aluminium PJSC (“DUBAL”) and Emirates Aluminium Company Limited PJSC (“EMAL”), whose combined production capacity of 2.4 million tonnes per annum (“tpa”) makes EGA one of the leading primary aluminium producers in the world. The UAE-based EGA also owns Guinea Alumina Corporation (“GAC”), a strategic bauxite mine and alumina refinery development project in West Africa. In addition, EGA has plans for significant local growth and international expansion.
DUBAL, where commissioning began in 1979, operates one of the world’s largest single-site primary aluminium smelters. The DUBAL complex, built on a 4.75 square kilometre site in Jebel Ali, Dubai, comprises a 1 million tpa smelter, a 2,350 MW power station (at 30˚C), a large carbon plant, extensive casting operations (more than 1.2 million tpa), a water desalination plant, dock and other facilities. A quality-focused, customer-centred and innovation-driven organisation, DUBAL holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO/TS 16949, ISO/IEC 20000-1, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 29990, ISO 50001 and OHSAS
18001 certification; and is accredited to ISO/IEC 17020. EMAL, where commissioning began in 2009, is the world’s largest single-site primary aluminium smelter. The EMAL complex, housed on a 6 square kilometre site in Al Taweelah, Abu Dhabi, comprises a 1.3 million tpa smelter, a 3,100 MW power station, a large carbon plant, extensive casting operations (more than 1.8 million tpa), a water desalination plant, dock and other facilities. EMAL holds ISO 9001, ISO 10002, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 29990, ISO14001 and ISO/TS 16949 certification; as well as OHSAS 18001 certification and NEBOSH certification in Occupational Health and Safety.

Re-melt purity products
On average, pure and high purity ingots – cast as sow and standard ingots – account for about 15 per cent of EGA’s total annual production output. Superior processing and performance standards ensure that purity levels of up to 99.9 per cent are maintained and that customers’ exacting expectations are constantly met. Utilised in electronic and aerospace applications, where top quality high purity aluminium is critical to the successful manufacture of precision instruments, EGA’s high purity aluminium products are used in the manufacture of compact discs, computer hard drive memory disks, capacitors and other electronic components. They are also used in the manufacture of high reflectance, high performance alloys and cathodic protection.

Rolled products
Rolled products, in the form of sheet ingots, account for 12 per cent of EGA’s total production output. The casting technology used at EGA is the state-of-the-art Low Head Composite (“LHC”) process that produces ingots of exceptionally high standard with a superior surface quality, resulting in significant savings for customers in downstream scalping and edge-trimming operations. EGA sheet ingots are available in a range of sizes and in lengths up to 10 metres. The major proportion of EGA sheet ingots is supplied to most major European rolling mills and the balance to other global consumers. Predominant usage is in the packaging industry (including foil rolled down to 0.2 mm thick) and for lithographic plates used in printing. EGA sheet ingots are also suitable for the growing market in automotive applications where the low density of aluminium makes vehicles considerably more fuel-efficient and better for the environment.

Billets for forging and extrusion
Billets make up 46 per cent of EGA’s total production. Produced using Airslip technology, all billets are homogenized and 100 per cent ultrasound-inspected before delivery. Inherently superior in quality and intrinsic purity, a large proportion of the annual production is cast in high extrudability 6063 alloy. EGA’s products are supplied for construction (windows and door frames), transportation, engineering, consumer durables, automotive, forging, as well as many other applications. Several famous landmarks incorporate EGA’s aluminium products, such as Malaysia’s Petronas Towers, and Dubai’s Burj Al Arab and Grand Hyatt Hotels.

Operational excellence
EGA is committed to excellence and reliability and continually strives for sustainable development of its processes. This quest reflects the company’s quest to serve customers the best product first time, and every time.
Operational excellence is a key strategic focus at EGA to sustain our world-class performance and to find future improvement opportunities. We practice best-in-class management systems such as lean manufacturing, employee involvement programmes and quality management systems.
Our employees are encouraged to be:
• Innovative by leveraging our internationally recognised ideas management and improvement processes;
• Proactive in implementing problem-solving and other waste elimination systems; and
• Productive by making to use (i.e. manufacturing only the products required) so as to achieve the best quality and maximum customer satisfaction.
Over the years, our facilities have won numerous awards in local and international competitions and at various other forums. This, together with year-on-year improvements in productivity, performance and efficiency, contributes to excellence across EGA.
1514
EGA’s award-winning and innovative thinking is complemented by a determined drive to maximise efficiencies and embrace new technologies.
Since inception, our DUBAL operation has continuously striven to improve its operating pots and develop new pot designs, resulting in new generation cells that work at substantially higher amperages than their predecessors. This has enabled increased productivity, improved energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact. These efforts have culminated in the in-house development of proven DX Technology – a UAE flagship technology. Developed in 2006, DX Technology has been operational in a dedicated 40-cell potline at DUBAL since 2008 and is currently operating at 400 kA.
DX Technology has also been installed in the 756-cells of Potlines 1 and 2 at EMAL, which operate at 380 kA. Through on-going research and development, DX Technology cells have been redesigned in recent years to enable operation at even higher amperages. Five new generation cells, built in the pilot line at Jebel Ali, began operating at 420 kA at the end of August 2010 and reached 450 kA in 2013, with stable results.
The improved technology – known as DX+ Technology – is based directly on the inherently robust DX Technology. The industrial version, another UAE flagship innovation, is targeted to achieve best-in-class energy efficiency and environmental performance standards. DX+ Technology has been installed in the 444-cell Potline 3 at EMAL, which is operating stably at 444 kA. In addition, Aluminium Bahrain (“Alba”) in December 2012 selected DX+ Technology for its Line 6 Bankable Feasibility Study.
DX+ Ultra Technology has since been developed to achieve even lower energy consumption: the cells will operate at above 440 kA with specific energy consumption of less than or equal to 12.49 kWh/kg. In 2014, five DX+ Ultra Technology demonstration cells were built and commissioned in the Eagle pilot line at DUBAL, replacing the five DX+ Technology cells. All five DX+ Ultra pots are operating stably at 450 kA.

EGA is one of the major players in the global aluminium industry, with ambitious plans for further growth in the future. Our success has been mirrored by, and indeed contributed significantly towards, the rise in prominence of the UAE, the Arabian Gulf state where our company is located.
EGA enjoys many advantages from its base in the UAE. These include being strategically placed at the crossroads of East and West, having an excellent transport infrastructure
including immediate access to two of the world’s largest seaports – Khalifa Port in Al Taweelah; and Jebel Ali Port; and benefiting from prompt document processing and clearance. These strategic advantages have enabled EGA to develop a strong international presence and ensure the efficient delivery of our high quality products to global markets.
