Services delivering grid connection
Repowering a wind farm
Our German wind farm client planned to repower from 100 to 125 MVA and their
existing infrastructure needed analysis regarding capacity reserves and upgrade
measures. We provided an OEM-independent study of the spare capacities of
transformers, switchgears, and cables to minimize CAPEX and to extend the
lifetime of existing assets. We advised that only minor investments would be
necessary to keep the electrical assets of the grid connection fi t for their future
purpose. Our client avoided outages during the rebuild and benefi ted from a
signifi cant reduction in CAPEX for electrical infrastructure.
Meeting off shore TSO requirements
We were entrusted by our German client to complete electrical system studies
for their off shore wind farm connected via an HVDC link to the onshore grid. Our
harmonic calculations and dynamic simulations enabled our client to demon-
strate that the off shore transmission system operator’s requirements were met
for the acceptance of a grid connection.

Local energy or microgrid solutions can maximize the use of renewable energy at a community level, reducing costs, minimizing
the load on the distribution system, and allowing independence from the grid, at lower environmental impact than conventional
generation.
For locations such as energy-intensive industrial sites or remote residential communities, local energy systems can signifi cantly
reduce your generation costs and provide access to new revenue streams by coordinating energy sources and aggregating buying
power. If you are a network operator, a local grid can reduce or defer your capital investment and accommodate greater distributed
generation within your system.
We can provide solutions that integrate innovative power generation and storage technologies. We are independent – our bespoke
solutions are designed for your specifi c needs rather than off -the-shelf solutions from an OEM.

Developing a model microgrid
Our client planned a microgrid in northern Europe as a model for similar future
schemes. We analyzed potential sites, taking into account the availability of renew-
able energy resources and engagement by the local community. The scheme
proposed included wind and photovoltaics generation, battery storage, a back-up
generator running on renewable fuel, an energy management system, and an
interface to the network control room. We specifi ed all the functional requirements
and worked with suppliers to source the optimum equipment, creating a versatile
model that could be quickly transferred to alternative network areas. We provided
specialist advice on engineering aspects, plus the engineering resources, to allow
our client’s engineers to remain committed to operational duties.
Innovative community energy plan
Our client engaged us to develop a renewable energy solution to provide power
directly to their local community and commercial properties from a locally
installed hydro scheme, photovoltaics, and battery storage. Our feasibility study,
business model, and technical design using smart energy storage systems and
power scheduling systems provided the community with a sustainable solution
meeting all technical, legal, and regulatory requirements. With our support the
community met its objective of tackling fuel poverty with an innovative renew-
able energy project enabling it to determine its own “price point” based on a
business model that did not rely on feed-in tariff s.

Our optimization services
Asset management and maintenance improved
Our UK client engaged us to create an engineering governance framework and
optimized maintenance strategy for its 110 kV private network overhead line and
substations connecting two manufacturing sites, 7 km apart across a densely
populated area. We redefi ned its asset management strategy and tendering
for maintenance services. Our client benefi ted from reduced OPEX and also
achieved both health and safety and environmental compliance.
Cause of transformer failure identifi ed
Our industrial customer in Germany asked us to identify the cause of the failure
of a 25 MVA, 30/10 kV transformer supplying power to an air compressor. We
carried out a detailed analysis of the damage inside the transformer mecha-
nisms and detected the off -load tap changer as the root cause of the failure.
We expedited our analysis so there was minimum delay for the client, and we
supported them by fi nding a back-up transformer to avoid further disruption to
the plant process.
Imminent failure warning
Our UK industrial client entrusted us to carry out performance monitoring of
their main import transformer. Using our know-how gained from providing
condition monitoring services for over 800 transformers, we helped our client
to manage the risk of failure through continuous condition assessment and
dissolved gas analysis. Our advance warning of imminent failure enabled us to
provide a technical specifi cation, procurement, and installation of a replacement
unit to mitigate the loss of our client’s 35 kV network, production capability, and
export generation.
