  • We are Delisle Youth Services, an organization of dedicated professionals who are passionate about providing treatment, support and encouragement for children, youth and their families who may be experiencing any number of challenges. These include anxiety, depression, school, social adjustment, peer relationships, behaviour, and psychiatric and emotional diagnoses.

We serve some of the most complex, medically fragile, and high-risk youth living in our community. Those who turn to Delisle for help are faced with mental health problems that may be compounded by issues like abuse, risk of homelessness, poverty, substance use issues, thoughts of suicide, or questions about their sexual identity.

By delivering service excellence, Delisle encourages and supports our youth to reach their fullest potential.

We strive to help youth and their families get back on track and to develop resiliency through a range of programs that include counselling, a group home, a day treatment program, in-school programs, queer and trans youth programs, an art gallery, a youth drop-in centre and residential case management for children and youth with complex special needs. All of our programs provide opportunities for youth and families to tell us what they need and to help shape the work we do together.

The challenges are complex, however, the goal is clear: to help youth move forward and grow into confident, productive adults.

… but we can help change their future.

our Mission Working in partnership with our communities, Delisle Youth Services (DYS) provides comprehensive, individualized services for children, youth and their families, helping them to live, learn and grow.

our vision Delisle Youth Services is recognized as the leader in innovative programs serving our community of children and youth.

  • As a leader in children’s mental health issues, we are driven to remove the stigma associated with it. We want to take mental illness, which impacts 1 in 5 people, out of the closet because it can be incredibly complex and challenging to deal with and understand. We are a strong advocate of the anti-stigma campaign and helping move our mental health system forward, because the more people know, the more we can help make a difference. We also believe in engaging youth in this process and empowering them to break down barriers. Together, if we can help children and youth find themselves early on in life, then the better able they are to go on to be confident, contributing people in their later years.

That is why service excellence is at the heart of everything we do and why for the last five years, our entire organization has been deeply involved in preparing for accreditation by the Canadian Centre for Accreditation in June 2014. Accreditation is all about ensuring we are able to provide a consistency of excellence in delivering treatment, support and encouragement for youth in order to empower and allow them to move forward with their lives with confidence. We have enjoyed no greater reward than learning from and supporting children, youth and their families through Delisle. The agency provides stability, support, guidance, and role-modelling to young people and their families when they need a helping hand. Children and youth carry an inherent worth and they are the future of our community. Supporting them and their loved ones through Delisle is an investment in our own longevity. Achieving accreditation will help us to be even better at helping those most in need.

It is critical that we are able to support innovative programs at home, at school and in the community for the children, youth and their families who are dealing with mental health issues. With the continued support of donors, volunteers and sponsors, together we can continue delivering the highest level of service excellence for those most in need in our community.

Service excellence is at the heart of all we do.

« L’excellence du service est au cœur de tout ce que nous entreprenons. »

  • the entire organization has been deeply involved in preparing Delisle for accreditation by the canadian centre for Accreditation. this significant, multi-year long initiative has truly highlighted the value of our staff and volunteers to the on-going success of Delisle.

Accreditation is helping us achieve service excellence

“ Our delivery of services is supported with science.”

“ Delisle is ahead of the curve.”

“ Demonstrating our commitment to service excellence.”

“ The importance of teamwork to get things done.”

The value of accreditation is that it really proves to the youth we serve, our funders, and all our stakeholders that we maintain a rigorous standard of service excellence that includes evidence informed and performance driven services across the organization – services that are verifiable, transparent, consistent and financially effective.

Accreditation really is an energizing discovery process in which people will make discoveries, like a better understanding of how a policy in one area links with a practice in another area. It also unites and brings an agency together so you don’t really have silos of different managers; rather, they are now being drawn together in a common effort. Once again, I think Delisle is ahead of the curve.

In today’s world, no longer are funders handing out scarce dollars just by virtue of an organization being able to say, ‘We do great work.’ They really have to prove that they’re doing good work. Today, funding bodies want to know that we’re delivering evidence-based practices, which enable us to very confidently stand behind our work.

Working with the team to assist in locating materials required by CCA and making it available online gave me an insight into just what a monumental process this has been, and the importance of teamwork to get things done.

When I started with the board, our goal was to continue the highest level of quality and care. Accreditation proves to our donors that there is a high level of excellence within the organization and that they have peace of mind knowing that their dollars will be used appropriately.

We undertook the accreditation process because it provides a seal of approval which will become increasingly important as the process of raising funds becomes even more competitive. Accreditation conveys to the community that Delisle works effectively to achieve its goals.

The outcomes we’ve already seen are a testament to the partnerships that Delisle enjoys with the community. This is a relationship that is to be celebrated and cherished, particularly as we enter a period of transformation and change in the children’s mental health sector.

“ Accreditation will help us be even better assisting those most in need.”

“ Delisle is well positioned as it prepares itself for the next 40 years.”

“ Achieving accreditation is one more way we continue to excel.”

  • Day treatment at Delisle expands to include Merge

The George Harvey Day Treatment Program provides youth who have a combination of social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties with an alternative learning opportunity. Delisle works in partnership with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) to help youth stay in school and acquire the emotional, social and academic skills to cope effectively at home, school and in their community.

This year, building on the expertise of our original program, and in partnership with the Griffin Centre, Delisle expanded our services to include the Merge Day Treatment Program, which benefits from a multi-disciplinary team to serve youth with complex and persistent mental health issues. There is a full time Clinical Manager and five Child and Youth Workers who work in partnership with the teachers to blend academic and treatment components of the program to meet the individual needs of each student.

Importantly, families are an integral part of the youth’s treatment and a Merge Social Worker helps youth and families to understand their strengths and learn new skills. Other clinical supports can include psychiatric, psychological and speech-language. Merge is committed to the mental health and well-being of each student in the program and helping them to thrive as contributing and valued members of the community.

  • the counselling program offers new therapyWe provide counselling for youth aged 13 – 21 who may be experiencing issues of depression, anxiety, physical abuse, sexual abuse, substance use, post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health concerns. Our experienced and highly skilled counsellors work personally with clients and their families to help them to better understand their challenges and develop coping strategies. To help prevent their problems from becoming unmanageable down the road, we also provide or help clients to access the resources they need, such as housing support, day or residential treatment programs, psychiatric assessments and a range of other specialized services.

This year, utilizing the PACE (People Advancing Change Through Evidence) Grant we received from the Ontario Center for Excellence for Children and Youth Mental Health, we identified an evidence-informed program that is suitable to better meet the needs of youth with more complex needs. We invested significantly in our counselling staff to develop Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), a more intensive therapy approach, as a skill. Our staff began working with youth and children and their caregivers this year.

the in-school program helps break down barriers

Our In-School Programs give us a very unique vantage point where we really meet the needs of youth right on their ‘home turf’. In partnership with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), our program is available at six TDSB secondary schools and provides confidential onsite counselling, group support and advocacy to high school students grappling with social, emotional, behavioural, and/or psychiatric difficulties.

However, it’s not only meeting the needs of students where they spend most of their day, it is working in partnership with the system to help broaden the message around mental health. For example, our counsellors spend a lot of time working with school personnel to distribute anti-bullying and anti-stigma messages. As these messages are communicated in active ways that include the students, it really works to help break down barriers and remove the stigma often associated with mental health.

of newly admitted in-school clients identified “life skills” such as coping and problem solving as primary reasons for seeking help from Delisle through the in-school program.

the in-school counsellors served 960 clients over the 2013/2014 school year.

  • centralized Access to residential services (c.A.r.s.)Rather than having case workers or parents call multiple residences to find openings in a mental health residential program for their child, this program acts as a central gateway, helping match a youth’s needs with the appropriate residence. Operated on behalf of the Toronto office of the Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS), C.A.R.S. often finds solutions for the most challenging and complex needs. Our program is critical because young people with the greatest needs within Toronto have been served as a result of our determination to find answers and solutions. This year we took on the added responsibility of administering newly-added funding resources through the local regional office of MCYS. We distribute funds to support the transitional stages of residential placement from admission through discharge, as well as funding specialist assessments as needed.

residential placement Advisory committee toronto (rpAc)The goal of this service is to ensure that youth stay in placements only for as long as they have to. We also provide youth the assurance that there is an independent party they can connect with and to ensure that they are being well served as a resident. All children and youth living in a facility of 10 or more beds, where the placement is expected to last for a period of 90 days or greater have their placement reviewed by RPAC. We also review the appropriateness of placement for every child over 12 years of age who objects to their placement.

RPAC is a mandated service under the Child and Family Services Act, and is operated on behalf of the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. It’s part of Delisle’s commitment to ensuring service excellence.

Delisle’s long-term co-ed residential program enhances “life skills”

This Residential Program offers up to eight youth at a time between the ages of 13 and 18 a solid and supportive home environment where they have the opportunity to make a change in their lives and go to school, work or volunteer. This is a voluntary program for youth who may be facing extreme challenges such as a family breakdown, physical or sexual abuse, emotional trauma or mental illness. Each youth benefits from the support of dedicated child and youth workers and a social worker. The youth are encouraged and have a voice in many aspects of the day-to-day running of the house.

An integral part of what we strive to do is to help youth gain life skills. Sometimes it’s the little things that count. This year we organized a truly special evening out for the group, which began with getting their hair styled at DSquare Salon. While many were quite anxious to start off due to being in a new environment, at the end of it, their body language had changed. Many became comfortable, even able to converse with the stylist. It was quite a transformation. Our residents were

then treated to an exceptional dinner at an upscale restaurant called Grazie. Our host Angelo and all his staff were welcoming and allowed the youth to create an atmosphere filled with fun and laughter. The youth were truly grateful, they learned new social skills and interactions and it was fun. It was a night they will never forget. A big shout out to DSquare Salon and Grazie.

They give me everything I’ve always needed. I’m still learning so much. My dream is to be a visionary, I want to go to university first and then I want to

help people. This group home is awesome.– Delisle House Resident

  • Delisle’s special needs team creates new community-based specialists

When children with complex special needs are referred to us by health care professionals, we determine if they will benefit from residential treatment or a care program. We are the single entry point for children’s residential treatment services for the entire Toronto region. We work with the community to develop highly customized, in-community programs to respond to children when residential resources are not yet available.

This year we introduced Community Resource Consultants (CRC) – our own team of community-based behavioural specialists, who support our case facilitators and streamline our service offerings to the children who are the most complex in the system. These specialists are deployed in very unique and flexible ways

to work with our children and youth with complex special needs in numerous situations; ensuring they are well-supervised and well-cared for while they are living at home; providing respite to parents; or supporting those living in some of the other programs with whom we work.

Also this year, we would like to recognize Community Living Toronto which continues to play a significant role in building community capacity in supporting children with complex special needs. With support from the Special Needs Team they have expanded their service offerings to provide increased residential and respite options for children and youth in the city of Toronto.

A soap story Sarah was a 12 year old girl with severe Autism living at home with her family. Sarah did not sleep, exhibited severe aggressive and self-injurious behaviour and did not speak. Her needs were greater than the community-based services working with her family could support. When the Special Needs Team became involved six years ago, they enabled Sarah to enter into a residential placement. With the help of the creative, enthusiastic and caring staff, Sarah’s behaviour improved dramatically.

One staff member noticed that Sarah loved to make soap, lip gloss and bath salts. Staff in the home, in consultation with Sarah’s mother, had the idea to start a cottage business for Sarah. And so “Sarah’s Soap” was open for business. Sarah began to sell her products and use her earnings to purchase more supplies and an occasional treat. Sarah’s mother could not be happier with Sarah’s independence and ability!

the studio encourages youth to be the fullest version of themselves

The Studio has evolved into a thriving drop-in space and our community has realized consistent values flowing from Delisle’s mission of living, learning and growing. The most important thing about The Studio is that it encourages every youth to be the fullest version of themselves, on their terms, and doesn’t diminish the experience of anyone else doing the same. We empower youth to be involved in decision making, from hiring to programming to the food we share. Staff work hard to bridge gaps between youth and help them uncover their strengths and build on them.

One such remarkable Studio youth is Said. As an LGBTQ+ identified youth, Said had been experiencing discrimination and homophobia in the shelter system and was feeling disempowered and unsure of his next steps. Since coming to The Studio, he has had his experiences affirmed and his strengths supported. Since receiving Studio support, he has performed at Supporting Our Youth’s FLAME youth stage, at Studio events, in impromptu choreographed performances in the space, and is on the bill for FruitLoopz youth stage at World Pride this year.

Another such youth is Grim. After a few visits, staff soon discovered that he wrote and listened to hip hop and invited him to try recording in the Recording Studio. He began coming every day to write and record songs and created a mixtape, which he has since performed for other youth in the space

and now continues to attend daily offering mentorship to other youth. Grim is a great example of how we use the arts to engage youth and help them move forward.

These two youth are just a few of the many meaningful relationships and individuals that make up The Studio community and the Strong and Resilient (STARS) program. When we open the doors, the program is indeed overflowing with all of what DYS envisions for our youth. Living, learning, growing. Caring, inspiring, empowering. These are all active and evident every day at The Studio.

youth from our diverse community visited the studio to participate in various programs and activities. some joined us once to check us out, many returned to participate in programs and activities, while others needed more one-on-one support.

The Studio is a place where you can release your stress and be yourself without people judging you. Things here make it feel like a family, especially when

you are not living at home. Everyone is here for me. It’s not just being provided with food and internet, but emotional support which is more important to me.

  • helping youth thrive in a drug-using world

Delisle Youth Gallery in BlooM rocks the auditorium

This year our Curriculum Development activities will be going national! We received a 3-year Health Canada grant to continue to develop our SESSIONS drug education workshops, to design a drug education program for adult caregivers and to take them across the country with the support of our partners. SESSIONS drug education workshops nurture youth resilience and equip young people and their families with the tools and health literacy skills they need to thrive in a complex, drug-using world.

This grant also allows us to expand our Embracing Family workshops for parents and caregivers of LGBTQ+ youth. We will be working with our partners to offer workshops and support to families across the GTA and eventually, across the country. We have also worked with parents and community partners to develop an online tool “Our Stories, Our Kids” supporting parents of LGBTQ+ youth who can not access programs in person.

The Delisle Youth Gallery has become a staple for youth expression in the Yonge & Eglinton community over the last 14 years. When we were presented with the opportunity to partner with “In Bloom: A Celebration of Teen Spirit and the Arts”, we took a leap and expanded our reach to the Regent Park community to display the show at Daniels Spectrum. Youth art got a new venue and more exposure, while In Bloom’s youth-filled tribute to the life and activism of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain rocked the auditorium.

In Bloom’s mission was to raise funds for Delisle Youth Services through awareness of the healing role art can play in mental health. By partnering with local high schools and Delisle’s Studio drop-in centre, In Bloom introduced accomplished local artist mentors to budding youth artists. Together, the groups created films, visual art, music performances, and drama pieces to reflect their generation’s experience with mental health and the importance of removing the stigma often associated with mental health.

We’d like to give a big shout out of thanks to Nicola Spunt, Kathleen Monroe and Liane Balaban for bringing the creative idea of the In Bloom experience for our youth to us last Fall. They offered our youth a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with well-known Canadian artists as their mentors, to work on a filming project with TIFF, and to be on stage and under the big lights at Daniels Spectrum.

Giving back from the heart – The Sartor Family

Philanthropy is the practice of giving money or time to help make life better for others. It’s about giving back. Whether it’s five dollars, a commemoration walk or providing winter clothes for our most needy youth. These many acts of kindness have helped us aid thousands of children and youth and their family members to find hope in their futures.

What’s amazing for us to see is the number of youth stepping up and giving their time, their voice and money to make a difference in someone’s life. For many families who share their spirit of philanthropy early on in life, and help develop and build awareness for youth about the importance of giving back, the rewards are immeasurable.

We’d like you to meet a few of our growing group of Young Philanthropists and their families who believe that giving back to Delisle is a family affair.

Lauryn sums up why they like giving back to Delisle: “We like it because we’re really going out and doing something that can help other people. And we think that it’s good to do that and we want to keep on doing that.”

Giving back is good for you – it’s good for us – The Muir FamilyThrough their relationship with Delisle, the Muir family, daughters, Katie and Jennifer and mom Mary, have hosted and spearheaded the first James’ Journey and raised almost $25,000 through their initiative. “Over and above raising money for Delisle,” says Mary, “it’s the fact that we’re talking about mental health and bringing awareness to other families and their children.”

The daughters believe that “the goal for us is to try and better the world we live in because these are desperate times for some people out there and that is an unfortunate reality. The best thing about giving back is that it’s not just good for Delisle and their clients, it’s good for us as well.

GIVING TO DELISLE IS AN INVESTMENT IN OUR YOUTH.

    – Richard Senechal, DUCA Financial Services Credit Union

“We have been partners with Delisle for many years because we care about our youth – our future leaders – and believe in providing opportunities for those who might not otherwise have a chance. We believe it’s our responsibility to give back to the communities we serve and we do so happily. These same communities are the ones that help make us successful. They are our Members, our staff and their families.

Giving to Delisle is an investment in our youth. If you believe in providing opportunity, empowering young leaders and strengthening families then adding Delisle to your portfolio is a wise financial move.”

GIVING BACK TO DELISLE GIVES YOUTH A BRIGHTER FUTURE.– Sandy Gordon, Founder of Side 3

“I’m the founder and one of the three lead singers of Side 3. I first performed in 2010 with Delisle Rocks! and was so impressed with Delisle’s passion to help youth move forward and become functioning members of our society. This has kept me engaged and has brought Side 3 back year after year to help the way we know best – by performing.”

“Delisle’s programs help youth to get past the issues that brought them there in the first place and to begin believing in themselves and move forward in life. It’s important because the children are our future. I hate to be cliché, but truly there are so many kids out there who just would be in so much trouble without Delisle. Giving back to Delisle gives youth a brighter future.”

GIVING BACK IS WORTH CELEBRATING EVERY DAY.– Anne-Marie Joan Wilson, donor

“When I’m asked why it is so important to embrace philanthropy, I say it’s because we’ve all been there or know someone else that has. Some of us have seen friends or relatives who have faced significant challenges. It makes you feel helpless. Giving back is a way to overcome this helplessness, and it’s why I recently dedicated my 60th birthday party to a fund raising event for Delisle.

“With Delisle’s help, we hosted an incredible evening at the Bayview Golf and Country Club. Over 100 people came to celebrate and give back to their community. We raised awareness for Delisle, and over $20,000 to support their In-School and Counselling Program, the Youth Art Gallery and the Care for the Care Giver Program. I’d call that a pretty good birthday party because giving back is worth celebrating every day.”
