Did you realize that between the age of 16-19 you could be eligible to earn up to £30 a week if you continue with your education? This is called Educational Maintenance Allowance or EMA. Of course, there are

some conditions; for example, you are only entitled to your cash if your household income is less than £30,810 per year. But for those who qualify, it’s a definite motivator to attend school regularly and remain well behaved, to receive your decent sum of money.

Whether or not you have a part time job, the government pay EMA straight into your bank account regardless. There is no catch and no unfair terms, it really is as straightforward as it sounds.

Ideally, EMA is supposed to be put towards educational use and the weekly payments should be spent on schoolbooks and equipment, school trips, travel to and from school and

any other school expenses. However, there are no rules or guidelines stating that this is a requirement. In fact, you are completely free to spend the money on whatever you choose, which is probably why most teenagers choose to spend it on clothes, phone credit and parties.

Consequently, this begs the question, is the system fair? Those that are receiving EMA may have a low income but that doesn’t necessarily mean the money will be put to good use. Whereas, many students who aren’t eligible for the money might actually use it to help them pay for any school expenses because they choose to continue their education, not for money, but for qualifications. This doesn’t mean that all teenagers receiving EMA aren’t spending it appropriately but large proportions aren’t, which does seem unmerited.

Furthermore, there are ways to cheat the system, which I myself have witnessed happen. The income of a household will obviously be significantly smaller if you live with only one parent because they are separated or divorced. This

means that you can be eligible for the money yet you actually have enough support from both parents just not under the same roof. Once again, this creates a fault in the system and an unfair disadvantage for those who may be just over the income boundary but would benefit from the allowance.

EMA does have its benefits and is essential for many struggling families. It has also encouraged many 16 year olds to carry on with their studies since they have an incentive to continue learning or because they now have the support to be able to continue learning. It’s not that I am against the EMA; I just think it needs some restructuring. I believe the money should be used primarily to learn and not to burn.

For this edition we interviewed up and coming dancer Reiss Nathan Hinds Why did you start dancing?

It was fun, I liked the way it looked and after a few years I found that it was a natural talent. It helped me get off the streets.

Are you apart of any crews or Troops ?

Yeah, we are called Vengeance. We are currently training for the Boroughs united 10, which is a hip hop dance competition in January.

Where do you want dance to take you in the future? What are your goals?

I want to be a renowned choreographer, and be in music videos and join a hip hop dance company like ZooNation or Avant Garde.

What type of dance do you do?

I do mainly street/hip hop dance and I specialise in Locking which is a form of street dance. I am also training in jazz, contemporary dance and ballet at my college.

Do you have any hobbies?

Not really. Right now I hardly have any time to socialise because I am in full time education, working two part time jobs and rehearsing with my group. However, when I try have some free time, I usually relax and chill at home or go out with my mates to club or cinema etc.

It’s crucial to make sure your parents know:

• Who you’re going with • Where the festival is • When it is • What time it starts/ends• How you’re getting to and from the festival

Try to speak to your parents about going to the festival as soon as you know you want to go to improve the chances of you being able to go; after all, they will most likely be the ones paying for it!

Festival Essentials for under 18s:

• Double check that you have your ticket before leaving home!

• Take at least one toilet roll - you don’t want to find yourself stranded without any in a dark, dingy portaloo.

• Take hand-sanitizer and sun-cream

• Bring a Mac/ hoodie and a pair of wellies - unfortunately, British weather is very unpredictable, even in what we call Summer.

• Have a bottle of water with you to avoid dehydration as stands are sometimes far from the stages and are overpriced

• Make sure everyone has a mobile phone, fully charged with credit - if one or more of your group gets lost, it’s important to be able to contact them and arrange a place to meet and reunite

• If somebody wants to go to the loo, make sure at least one member of your group goes with them - there’s safety in numbers!

• Keep parents up-to-date on how you are; even a small text like “we’re fine”, “just arrived” or “we’re leaving now” would be ok.

• Have at least £20 each for emergencies keep all zips closed and hide any valuables that you have with you to avoid theft

Remember to be safe and your festival experience will be fun - by Tracey Murigi

Cottoning on to Fearne’s Fashionby Elianna Panayiotou

Fearne Cotton has a unique, bold and tasteful style. She is a British style icon. We have seen her transform over the years on our screens, and her fashion sense seems to get better and better… In the time of today she is being referred to as a ‘style icon’ and a ‘fashionista’ and I now understand why. Fearne knows how to work British fashion perfectly. She is able to mix vintage, high-street and designer to produce effortless looks which always work. If it’s just an ordinary day at Radio 1 or an awards ceremony, she always looks her best. Her day looks tend to consist of skinny jeans, a vintage shirt, sunglasses, and an over- sized cardigan, and her evening looks are usually an influential dress. I admire her unpredictably, and her ability to mix different ends of fashion together. In my opinion, she is a style icon because her looks are iconic, and her outfits are remembered. She has made fashion appear more accessible

to people who may not have the money to splash on high end designer clothes.

This year has been a special year for Fearne, and for us, as she has launched her very own clothing line. The range itself includes clothes which Fearne herself would wear; very

glam rock, but also including some feminine pieces to please all of us.

The collection is available at www.very.co.uk, and is more affordable than you might expect, with prices ranging from £35 for a pair of jeans to £75 for a duffle coat.

Live To Be Free and Be Free To Liveby Alexander Kirri

Having been drawn to the slightly more abstract side of life, my claim

to fame is without doubt my experience with the slightly… extreme side of sports. So, upon the destruction of my umpteenth Skateboard, I decided to try something different. Skateboarding, Snowboarding, In-Line Skating and Surfing have dominated this segment of the market - each offering a new thrill for adrenaline junkies worldwide. None of them are

without their faults though - which is why, when I saw Freeline Skates advertised in a local skate shop, I quite literally jumped at the chance!

Combining elements of almost every sport in their genre, it’s no wonder that Freeline Skates inventor and pro-rider Ryan

Farrelly calls them ‘the next ride’. Very simply, Freeline Skates consist of two separate aluminium plates, with grip tape on top, and two Longboard wheels attached underneath. In fact, the construction of Freeline Skates is somewhat incredible, with each one being able to take around 3000 pounds of force. Ridden in a sideways stance, they give a similar effect to that of a Skateboard - but that’s where the similarities end. At first glance, the method of propulsion is completely ridiculous. Using an “S” type motion, resistance created can create immense speeds of up to and around 40mph. When the X-Games, the US’s premier extreme sport competition caught onto Farrelly’s invention, they could only describe them as ‘Insane!’. “For years we’ve been looking at what could anything more to the games, and if anything, it’s this”. They can be ridden uphill, downhill, even on ramps - but the magic doesn’t end there, explains Mike Kelly, dedicated Freeline skater - “Part of the beauty of our sport is that it is so new. People are taking the sport to new levels every week.”

In spite of the magnitude of Farrelly’s discovery, though, he doesn’t hesitate to mention that he’s not trying to take away from other sports at all. He along with everyone in his company seems to have been skateboarding, surfing or snowboarding for their entire lives, and the last thing that he wants is for people to think they are trying to replace skateboarding. Freeline Skates are something all together new and different.

SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2 - (Wii)

The iconic Mario is once again being wheeled

out for this new 3-D platform game. Expect

plenty of bright colours, ludicrous item additions

and a classically distinctive soundtrack as

this sequel once again will see Mario planet-

hopping across the galaxy. The headlines will

no doubt focus on the addition of the ever

lovable Yoshi into the mix; it is clear that

Nintendo intends to spoil its fans in 2010.

GRAN TURISMO 5 - (PS3)Set for release in March 2010, this long awaited racing simulator looks set to be a huge hit in 2010. With near life-like visuals already released, expect mind-blowing graphics that justify the games $60 million development budget. The game offers almost 1000 cars to choose from, and even features the Top Gear test track amongst the plentiful track list. No doubt even the Stig will be buying this game next year.

HALO REACH - (Xbox 360)

Planned for Autumn 2010, the fifth and latest

addition to the Halo franchise turns out to be yet

another prequel. Expect more fast paced multi-

player action and a thrilling campaign, no doubt

including Banshees, Warthogs et al. Little has yet

been revealed over the finer details of this release,

but it already looks set to top the charts in 2010

MASSIVE ACTION GAME (MAG) - (PS3)And now for something completely different; well almost. Releasing in January 2010, MAG is billed as a 256 player online shooter, a figure that simply blows every one of its predecessors out of the water. Technical achievements aside, it will be interesting to see how this game plays out; hopefully not crippled by lag issues. Expansive maps complete with vehicles have been promised, but will this PS3 exclusive live up to all the hype?

Catwalk to Common Roomby Marianna Michael

This year’s fashion trends were shown right from December last year. The Clothes Show Live didn’t just show us amazing dancers and models, it featured many designers

collections which showed us what was in store on this year’s high streets.

So what should we be looking forward to wearing this winter I hear? Well the Autumn / Winter 2009 / 2010 fashion trends are already out there.

Trends you can try, without breaking the bank...Grab this at River Island for only £14.99.

Wear a body like this one from Topshop (laced) at £25 (or any other bodysuit) with leggings or skinny jeans and some bold coloured shoe boots or even with coloured tights and black shorts with a blazer and heels.

Patent, peep toe shoe boot with a visible platform from New Look for only £20.

The key looks are chunky knits, faux furs, capes and cloaks and shoulder pads, not forgetting those knee high boots, shoe boots and statement making jewellery. So as we look forward to the end of 2009’s fashion, we also welcome women’s fashion 2010 having an idea of the Spring/Summer collection 2010.

It’s is all about being unique and showing that individual style as Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton have already shown us at New York and Pairs Fashion Week. Think about bringing individuality into your wardrobe and don’t be afraid to be bold. Stick to a few basic trends to get you started. Start buying ripped denim, patched jeans, single shouldered garments, boyfriend blazers and sheer fabrics on garments.

Volunteering in Enfield

special feature

In the last school year 566 young people in Enfield gave up a total of 9690 hours to take action in their community and help others in need!

These Enfield young people volunteered at placements such as Charity shops, helping the elderly, working with children, supporting young people or adults with special needs, helping sick or injured animals

or doing YAVE projects such as this magazine which provides information, guidance and entertainment to other young people in the borough.

*Alex Kirri and Paul Cheston from The Latymer School volunteered to take this research forward. They designed a survey aimed at yr 9 students to find out if they were already volunteering and if they would be interested in volunteering in the future. These surveys were given to the Delirium Team to take into schools across Enfield to get them completed.

YAVE Volunteering Survey

Only young people who are 16 - 18 year olds and live or go to school in Enfield can currently participate in YAVE. But we want to extend volunteering to a wider range of young people, so that they have the chance to gain from this brilliant opportunity. We asked under 16’s in schools across Enfield whether they would be interested in voulnteering.

The results of our survey show that 2/3 rds of the younger age group that we questioned would be willing to volunteer*

When asked the question where they have volunteered the top responses we received were Scouts, Guides, at School, Youth and Sports Clubs or Charities - for example the RSPB. In response to the question what do you hope to get from volunteering, the top answers were meeting new people, learning new skills, improving their CV and having new experiences.

Natasha Sheppard, Volunteer (16)

Volunteering for 3 hours per week at an Oxfam Charity shop in Winchmore Hill, Natasha is involved in a wide variety of tasks; from organising the shop floor to decorating the shop window. Her initial motivation was to follow in her sister’s footsteps, and she told me how surprisingly easy volunteering was to get involved with. As for the benefits, she described how her volunteering has been a helpful step into the world of work, giving her the experience of the retail environment without the pressures of paid work. Moreover, she described how gaining an insight into the inner workings of a charity shop had been really interesting to see. Of the many skills it has helped her develop, learning to deal with members of the public was described as being by far and away the most important.

Natasha can be accredited by Youth Action Volunteering in Enfield (YAVE) and receive a certificate from V inspired just by notifying YAVE. (If you have already volunteered and we can check with the organisation

you volunteered with, then you can get YAVE accreditation and a V Inspired National Certificate.)

Mrs O’Driscoll - Mentoring co-ordinator at The Latymer School.

Mrs O’Driscoll has a great deal of experience in dealing with young volunteers. Prior to starting, mentors are briefly trained in vital techniques, such as recognising body language and exactly how to talk to students. She was keen to emphasise the many skills she sees the volunteers actively develop, for example helping to improve social skills, learning to deal with problems as well as raising self-esteem. What makes a good mentor? Well, according to her, listening skills are absolutely critical, as only by listening intently can mentors help their younger colleagues improve.

Mentoring is a great example of a way to volunteer even during school hours and mentors can also receive certification from YAVE for their work.

Barack Obama - The American Dreamby Tracey Murigi

This time last year, the presidential elections had taken place with Obama coming out on top. Obama is possibly

the most powerful man on our planet; he fought against all odds and managed to become a beacon of hope and freedom for many people of many races.

Forty years ago, a black man had to sit at the back of the bus because of the colour of his skin. If you had said to anyone that such a man like Obama was to lead America in the future, they would’ve dismissed this notion but four decades after Martin Luther King’s inspirational “I Have a Dream” speech and the Civil Rights Act being passed in 1964, that daring

dream has become ravishing reality. When news emerged of Mr Obama’s presidency, there was hope, change and a difference for everyone. Mr Obama is the first Black President and the four years he’ll be in the iconic Oval Office will breathe new life into, not only America, but the whole world. Who knew that on November 4th 2008 that a Harvard graduate would be the most influential man of this moment?

After 46 other presidents, you’d think the 47th one would fit the same old criteria, but not Mr Obama. Obama has promised to fix America’s problems with fresh reforms like free health care for all Americans and withdrawing troops from Iraq as well as reforms within education and finance.

It seems that Obama is the most loved president since John F. Kennedy of the 1960s; a venerable leader who still has time for his family which makes everyone wonder “is there nothing this man can’t do?”

President Obama’s ability to defeat the odds has inspired many young people to do something amazing in life. If he’d listened to every critic and “hater”, who knows what his life might have been like? It goes to show that dreaming can become a reality with hard work and dedication; he has proved that anyone can make the world a better place and he has proved that being president or an influential figure in politics is something that any person of any race can achieve. Can we change the world? Yes we can!

“ These competitions

aren’t all about talent, they’re

about the image the person

portrays and whether they ‘look’ like a pop star... ”

Music Madby Elianna Panayiotou

Music is something which captures the imagination and is able to affect people’s feelings in many different ways. It has been around for centuries and its strong position in the media

is growing. I will be exploring the issue of music becoming manufactured, and real talent being lost…

Britain itself has been the home of many great musicians who have defined rock music, such as Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. These bands all formed themselves, and they became huge. Britain has also produced many great pop acts, for example Girls Aloud and the Spice Girls, but they may not have originated in the same way as the other bands mentioned…

Nowadays many bands are produced through talent contests, and Girls Aloud are one of these bands. Undoubtedly, they have become the most successful girl band ever in Britain, so the girls have done extremely well for themselves. However, I personally feel the art of music has been lost through these contests. Programmes such as the X Factor and American Idol have made it accessible for people to watch, and even take part in voting who will be the next big thing. It is an easy way for someone to become successful; they have everything there for them if they win: a record contract right in front of them, and they have already built up a fan base by winning the competition. Contestants who do not win, such as JLS on the 2008 X Factor, have still made it in the

music industry. JLS have achieved two number 1 singles in the UK; an amazing achievement. These competitions aren’t all about talent, they’re about the image the person portrays and whether they ‘look’ like a pop star, which is a comment commonly made by the judges on the X Factor.

Music was once very different, and whether you liked the artist purely depended on whether you liked their music, and not their look, or their videos etc… Now music has become this way, I don’t think I can ever go back. This is a reflection of today’s society, and how personal

image has become so important.

New artists, such as Pixie Lott have made a different path in to the music industry. She was lucky enough to be offered a music contract after a producer heard her demos. Before this Pixie went to an Arts school, where she won a scholarship, and she appeared in West End productions. She was fortune enough to have this opportunity, and she has also achieved two number 1 singles. The Arctic Monkeys also took a different path, by forming the band themselves, and their MySpace page helping them, by spreading their music and informing people of the band.

The TV contests are great entertainment, as we get to witness some humorous acts. Leona Lewis

and Alexandra Burke are some recent successes, and without the programme they may not have achieved this fortune. I do understand, however, in these times it is extremely difficult to make it alone, as the competition is so high and the market competitive, but it can happen…

Wireless Festival Reviewby Tracey Murigi

The Wireless Festival was a mixture of up-and-coming artists such as Mr Hudson and Example and big stars like Kanye West and N-Dubz.

The first act that stood out for me was N-Dubz, an RnB group from North West London, who belted out hits such as “Strong Again” and “Papa” - they were a definite crowd pleaser for the younger members of the audience who were shouting along to the music.

Another act that stood out was Calvin Harris. He presented an incredible set of hits like “Acceptable in the 80s”, “Ready for the Weekend” and “I’m Not Alone”, each having an electro-trance remix that had thousands of us jumping in unison with arms in the air.

The Headline Act, Kanye West, was the highlight of my experience. The staging was decorated with golden cubes and lattices while the thousands of concert goers were milling around or perched on the dusty floor anticipating Mr West. The Headline Act began while the summer sun was setting over the capital, while 33,000 music-lovers swayed to records from West’s latest album, Heartbreaks and 808s including “Heartless” and “Love Lockdown”. Then, well-known hits such as “Stronger”

and “Gold Digger” caused the awe-struck crowd to go wild while the stage lighting reflected all over the shiny set and into the night.

Wireless festival was everything you’d want in a summer concert on your doorstep; the dirt, the portaloos, and the over-priced merchandise! If you don’t like travelling to festivals, then Wireless is brilliant as it’s close to home and the cost of travel was under £5. Watch out for Wireless 2010 as it’s the ultimate way to begin the summer after exams and school is over.

What I liked:

- Choice of whichever Stage/Act you wanted to go see - The general atmosphere of the festival - Having a festival of this kind close to home

What I didn’t like:

- Over-priced food and drink - The toilets

- Not being able to see all the acts at different stages as

some of the acts clashed

The Wireless Festival took place Sat 4th July to Sun 5th July - from 2pm until 10.30pm in London’s Hyde Park.

Inclusion Youth Clubs Tribute to MJinterview by Destina Ebcin

Destina: Hello Michael, we’ve been hearing a few things about this upcoming event near Christmas that’s based on Michael Jackson. Do you want to tell us more about it?

Michael: Yes sure, well we have a mini performance coming up on the 10th December where most of us will be doing a show for parents that’s based on Michael Jackson’s song.

D: Oh great! You said some people, what would the rest be doing?

M: Some people are shy to dance in front of others so we made everyone do something that they are comfortable with. The rest will helping our with the refreshments and music on the night. Also they will be starting to design the back

drop for the stage on the night with some help by people that are going to come in.

D: It’s nice to know that your getting everybody involved. With the dance, have you decided what song you’re going to be making a performance to?

M: We haven’t chosen a song yet, but I would be impressed if we do it to “Beat it” or “Smooth Criminal” as they are my favourite.

D: Yes they are one of his best ones! From this I can tell that you are quiet a fan of Michael Jackson. Does this mean that we will see you in the live performance showing us moves?

M: Definitely! I love to dance, especially when it’s to music

that I love, like Michael Jackson’s! If you’re lucky, you might find me doing the moon walk on there along with my other dance strategies!

D: I’m sure we would love to see that! Have you got any ideas on the costume that the dancers will be wearing?

M: Well I have had a thought of it being similar to the ones in the “Beat it” video, as that is my favourite and it will look very original as we’re dancing to his music.

D: Sounds great! Well, it was nice talking to you Michael, and I can see that all the volunteers have a great time working with you all at the club.

M: See ya!

YAVE sends volunteers to help with the Inclusion Club, so we sent a reporter along to find out what the club is doing. Delirium interviewed Michael Halford about his involvement in a tribute to Michael Jackson, the king of pop.

The Uefa Champions League is the pinnacle of all club competition. Every club wishes to win it. Every club wishes to participate

in it. It is widely considered to be the most prestigious trophy in the world, akin to the World Cup, but on a slightly smaller scale. What originally started out as the “European Champion Clubs’ Cup” back in 1955 has grown at a rapid rate. Originally it was nothing more than a knockout competition between a few clubs who were the official champions of their respective league, but since then, it has expanded to

include other teams based on a Uefa co-efficient ranking system - something that has drawn more parallels between it and the World Cup in terms of importance.

The “Uefa Champions League” as it is formally called since its inauguration back in 1992, is watched in over 70 countries, in more than 70 languages, and can draw an audience over 200 million viewers, making it one of the most watched sports events in the world. For most people, the Uefa Champions League would be considered a success for football fans. Not only is there more of a chance of your team being able to participate in the competition these days, but also the amount of TV coverage it generates

makes it more accessible to the average viewer. However, have these changes to the format really made it better for the average supporter or are they there just to satisfy the “businessman”?

If you think that it’s for the latter, you may be onto something. There is no doubt that the dynamics of the cup has changed. The Champions League used to be a matter of pride. Now it seems to be a matter of money. These days it is sponsored by a group of multi-national corporations, compared to the single high-profile domestic leagues. They’re entitled to put up to four advertising boards around the perimeter of the pitch, as well being allocated a certain amount of tickets for each match. These changes have been

18 19

Page 19: Delirium 01 - Winter 2010

met with a lot of criticism; supporters believe that the boards are far too large and in some cases, eliminate the availability of certain seats in the stadium, while “allocative priority” being given to corporate members has incensed others who feel as if their satisfaction is being traded off against the competition’s desire to increase its revenue and profitability. The outcome? Successes for the corporate people one would assume. And there are other things. Coverage of the cup has. Before, any person who wanted to watch a Champions League match could do so, free of charge or stress. Now? Not so much. Coverage is no longer exclusive to terrestrial television. The emergence of SKY has changed the dynamics of television viewing, and sport is a part of it all. Since 2003, SKY has been steadily increasing its rights to show Champions League matches, while ITV - a terrestrial channel - has slowly seen its rights diminish. We are at a point now ITV only has the right to show one Champion League match per match day. Everything else is in the hands of SKY. Surely this is a good thing, as SKY probably have the resources to give the average viewer better coverage. However, does that fact actually matter if the average viewer doesn’t have SKY television, probably due to their inability to pay for the package, or perhaps because they just don’t see fit to? These people are missing out. Does SKY really need a huge share of the rights? Maybe they do, but probably only because it would allow them to monopolise their coverage and increase the number of subscribers they have. This does nothing for the average supporter really, and could count as another mark against the Champions League credibility in the eyes of the supporter.

However, as much as we criticise what the Champions League may have become, we can’t take away the positives that these changes may have brought us. For instance, as said before, the number of teams who can potentially participate in the competition has increased. Supporters should be grateful for that fact; these days someone may be able to see their

team play against one of the giants of European football without them even being the champions of their own league! Amazing, eh? Imagine going from watching your team playing the same old teams up and down the country every week, to going to amazing European stadiums to watch your team play in the most prestigious cup offered on the continent. Seeing amazing talents that you wouldn’t ordinarily see on a week-to-week basis. I’m sure that would create a sense of happiness for most people. Also with an increase in the prize money available to clubs participating, supporters may get to see improvements at their club - new stadium, new players, new everything maybe!

With everything talked about, I would say that the Champions League probably is now geared more towards corporate people than supporters these days. It’s become evident with the price increases, changes in coverage etc. However, like everything, football is ever changing. Who’s to say we won’t see a return to a time where things are simpler for the average football supporter? We’ll just have to weather it for now I guess. What do you think?

VIDEO GAMES OF 2009

FIFA 10 (all platforms)October brought us the latest serving in the long running football series. This year’s headline addition was the new 360 degree dribbling feature, which has given the game-play a less mechanical and more natural feel. What’s more, the new ‘virtual pro’ mode allows you to create a player that can be used across all modes, allowing you to quite literally place yourself within the game-play experience.

Birdsongby Sebastian Faulks - Paperback

Birdsong is a truly magnificent novel. Based on a particular character named Stephen and the events that occur in his life before, during and after the First World War. It’s structured into seven parts with each part based on a different year.

The book focuses on different eras from before the war during the war and some while afterwards. Before the war he embarks on a new relationship with a woman named Isabelle who is trapped in an unhappy marriage but eventually leaves him. During the war he becomes an officer and forms a strong friendship with a fellow officer named Weir who passes away during the war. Towards the end we become knowledgeable of the drastic effects of war as Stephen comes out a changed man and goes into two years of silence. This enables us to understand the whole concept of how disastrous war was. At different

parts of the book in a future generation there is a main focus on a character named Elizabeth who is Stephens’s granddaughter and she is eager to find out more about her granddad.

The novel focuses on the natural disasters and the effect it has on nature and relationships and how they change throughout due to the effects of war. Later on in the novel he meets Isabelle again who is hiding a secret from him, does she reveal the secret and how does he deal with it? How has the death of his best friend affected him and how does he deal it? Does he find love again? I personally thought it was a magnificent novel, I found it completely moving it changed my perception towards war completely and I highly recommend it as I am sure it will change yours too.

One Loveby David Guetta CD and Download

Energetic. An easy listen. Simply brilliant.

‘One Love’ is the most recent album from David Guetta, and it has been worth the wait. The album includes the number one single ‘When Love Takes Over’ featuring Kelly Rowland. The other tracks are vibrant and addictive, and take you away to a summer in Ibiza… Guetta has collaborated with many favourite artists to create this album, and a few are Ne-Yo, Akon, Kid Cudi, and will.i.am. The songs to look out for are ‘Getting’ Over’ feat. Chris Willis, ‘Memories’ feat. Kid Cudi and ‘One Love’ feat. Estelle. There is also a great new remix of the Black Eyed Peas’ ‘I Gotta Feeling.’ This album is great to listen to before going out, in the car, or when you want to feel happy and alive… Guetta just keeps getting better!

3 Wordsby Cheryl Cole CD and Download

Exciting, energetic yet endearing. These are the three words I would use to describe the debut solo album from Cheryl Cole. Fans of Girls Aloud may be surprised to find that she has gone for a different sound for this solo effort. With opening and title track ‘3 words’ making a bold statement and separating her from her earlier pop days, followed by two catchy yet somewhat repetitive songs and her hit debut single ‘Fight For This Love’. There are some fun and addictive tracks like ‘Stand Up’ & ‘Make Me Cry’, which show the true potential Cheryl has. But some of the dull tracks such as ‘Don’t Talk About This Love’ makes this album a bit hard to listen to at times. Overall, this is a solid first effort, which sees Cheryl step out from the shadows of her band mates and from behind the judging desk to face the limelight alone. If this is just a taste of what is to come, then I’m excited to hear what’s next.

Now who wants a flight in my house? Pixar take us on a journey, full of emotions, to places we’ve never been before! Our companions on board are Carl Frederickson, Russell, Kevin the bird, Alpha the dog and Ellie that will always be in Mr Frederickson’s “Crossed heart”. Pixar very professionally produced this tear dropping and laughter-causing movie after the all-time-favourites Coraline and Wall-E! The movie begins with a wonderfully constructed montage of Carl and his wife’s story with no dialogue. It took me to a new world that I didn’t want to leave. I couldn’t have enough of the unique cartoon, which managed to fit a new adventure in every minute. Pixar didn’t shock me as I was expecting something so memorable such as this great cartoon, and I feel very happy to say that we are lucky to have a great company such as Pixar to rely on, as they simply can never go wrong!

Are you the type of student that once you eventually settle down to start your coursework;

you end up finding yourself on Facebook? Rather than analysing the symbolism of literature poems you are commenting on the pictures that your friends have posted of the latest rave?

Most students are easily distracted by the likes of Facebook which involves socially interacting with other individuals through a network site. The downside of these web sites are that they are perceived as being a major distraction in a students life as they spend most of their time on these web sites instead of on coursework and revising for upcoming exams. The social networking site Facebook even has a group named, ‘I was doing homework, and then I ended up on Facebook’ which has over 900,000 members. This reinforces the fact that Facebook is a major distraction and could possibly be blamed for the failure of exams.

However, most students can resist the temptation, overcome the distraction and even use the site as a way of communicating with their colleagues about exam work. I often find myself posting status’ about schoolwork for example, ‘Who is in my Media class?’ This enables me to communicate with fellow students and we will discuss and compare work. In this aspect it can be useful only if you use it accordingly. These students can prioritise their time so that they can study and still have time for a social life. These are the individuals who are more

likely to be successful in their exams and still attend the biggest raves!

Although it may be difficult to believe that you can be up to date on your coursework and revision and still have a social life, it is possible if you are well organised. It is important that you are knowledgeable of the importance of exams as they are a starting point for the rest of your career.

Facebook and other social networking sites are used by a variety of different age groups but are mainly used by teenagers and young adults. All different age groups use Facebook for different reasons. The younger generation use it as a social interaction with their friends, and it is immensely popular amongst this age group because

of the fact that it is free and students are often on a limited budget whereas communicating via mobile phones are rather costly. Within the older generation it is commonly used to track down people they used to know and due to the fact of less advanced technology a number of years ago they were unable to remain in contact. However, the current usage of Facebook has enabled people to re unite with others and has helped replenish some people’s lives.

Facebook is constantly changing their layout and this has an immense effect on the members as each time it changes people become increasingly aware of every action people take as it is posted on a news feed and so therefore there is no sense of a bit of privacy. But do we really want to know what everyone is posting on Facebook? Are we really interested in your ‘status’ and what groups you are joining? Some people may enjoy the idea of knowing about everyone’s personal lives and some may dislike the fact of Facebook going into too much depth, but it is up to you how you use it and how it benefits you.

All in all, Facebook has millions of members but will it last forever? In the past the other social networking sites have been; Bebo and MySpace and the current one that is in the picture is Facebook. But will Facebook eventually become less popular like the others and be invaded by the likes of Twitter or more social sites to come?

Raspberry Mirror Cake by Nicholas Mendum-Paice

1) Preheat the oven at 180oC (Gas mark 4/350oF). Grease a 22cm (9 inch) spring form tin. Line the base with baking paper.

2) To make the sponge, beat the egg and sugar together until light and fluffy (about five minutes). Sift the flour into the mixture. Fold it together.

3) Put into the tin and bake for 10 - 15 minutes (Or until browned and shrunk slightly away from the edge). When cooked, remove and place on a wire rack to cool. Clean the tin, line it in CLING FILM NOW! This will prevent leaking when adding the mixture.

4) For the mousse, blend the raspberries in batches (in small groups) until smooth. Press mixture through a plastic strainer (not metallic

or it’ll discolour). Personally, if you want bits, and more of a homemade effect, don’t strain it. Keep 125ml of the puree for the topping.

5) Beat the egg yolks and sugar together for five minutes in a heat proof bowl. Boil the milk. If you are using leaf gelatine, this is when you should and it. Slowly pour into the e.g. mixture and beat continuously so the hot milk doesn’t cook the eggs. Make a Bain Marie, and stir for ten minutes. The mixture should be slightly reduced.

6) Stir the liqueur, puree and egg mixture together. It should be a dark pink. Whisk the cream until it forms soft peaks. Add into the mixture, and it should make a bright pink colour. Place in the fridge over night, or for several hours.

7) For the top, place the gelatine, or leaf gelatine in an even layer of water in a heat proof bowl. Leave it to go spongy. Do not stir, or it will dissolve. Put a small saucepan of water to boil. When it boils, remove it from the heat and place the bowl in the water, so it is just floating. Stir until it dissolves. Add the puree and the liqueur and pour evenly on the mousse and refrigerate until set.

8) To make the chocolate bark, cover a baking tray firmly with cling film. Spread the chocolate thinly and allow it to set.

Enjoy your cake! The Y.A.V.E. way!
