Primary Section & Kindergarten Section
In July of this year, the world will mark the 2020 summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. Over ten thousand of athletes from all around the globe will descend on this world city of electric lights and colours to take part in this most celebrated of international sporting events. After thousands of hours of training and practice, these athletes will finally get to show their talents and skills on the track, field, and court, and in the pool, ring, and stadium. In addition to competing for individual glory, these athletes will also proudly represent their countries and attempt to bring honor to their countrymen.
While winning the gold medal is definitely the aspiration of every Olympic athlete, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) nevertheless stresses the utmost importance of self-improvement as conveyed by the Olympic motto Citius-Altius-Fortiusm Latin for “Faster-Higher-Stronger”. The use of the comparative adjective form instead of the superlative in the Olympic motto is indeed very telling; the ideal athlete strives not necessarily to be the best athlete but to be a better athlete. Whether it is in terms of speed, height, or strength, the quest for self-improvement is and must remain the ultimate goal of an athlete.
Intertwined with self-improvement is the other key Olympic ideal: sportsmanship, or the set of virtues that are exemplified by a fair and honest athlete. Improving oneself – and being victorious, especially – cannot come at the expense of one’s own integrity and decency. An unfair advantage, through rule violations, drug use, or match fixing, renders the efforts of the participating athletes and the essence of the entire competition meaningless. In a society that unfortunately values success at any cost, athletes must not lose sight of sportsmanship in the quest for excellence. As the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, points out, “The most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the fight; the essential thing is not to have won, but to have fought well.”
Here at the Delia primary schools and kindergartens, self-improvement and sportsmanship are emphasized in our school activities and competitions. Not only are our students encouraged to take part in as many academic and athletic events as they can, but they are more importantly nurtured in a school environment that prioritizes the core DELIA values of self-improvement and sportsmanship: Discipline, Excellence, Leadership, Integrity, and Aspiration. Our students, as guided by our teachers and staff, work tremendously hard to achieve what they want while becoming better and protecting their name in the process.
As the world celebrates the 2020 Summer Olympic Games this year and on behalf of the School Management, I would like to thank all of our students, their parents, our administrators, teachers, and staff for upholding the Olympic ideals of self-improvement and sportsmanship in every way possible.
