of the activity:

Aim – To sensitize students about the important role that hands play in making a difference to the world around us. Content – Art & Craft work, Flower Arrangements, Tree Plantation, Cleaning up of Rivers and Recycling. Outcomes – The students learnt and explored the various Indian and Japanese art forms. They planted saplings in and around the school and carried out an extensive research on Yarra River.

April 2014, it was a month to reckon with! I was informed that my school Delhi Public

School, Maruti Kunj will be competing for the prestigious International School Award

(ISA) organized by the British Council. Our school is known for imparting “Value

Based Education of Global Standards” so being a part of ISA journey was a natural

choice for us.

I was overwhelmed and happy when I was told that I would be one of the 10 Activity

Incharges for this assignment. I was very excited and ideas started pouring in. After a

consultation with the Heads of the school, I was given charge of ‘Dexterous Hands’.

My job entailed integrating activities pertaining to Dexterous Hands in the school’s

activity schedule and initiating communication links with schools from abroad. This was

not too difficult a task as our school has always endeavoured to incorporate innovative

skills in our classrooms. The tremendous enthusiasm shown by the students, teaching

staff, administrative staff and parents surpassed all my expectations. We successfully

completed all the activities within the stipulated time. A few obstacles came our way but

we overcame them with a positive attitude. On conclusion of the project our students

were brimming with confidence and enlightenment.

‘Dexterous Hands’ has honed our students’ skills in research work and community

service. In short, ISA has helped us in breaking new grounds, scaling new heights and

soaring higher. It has opened vistas for our students to gravitate towards experimental

learning.

It is righteously said that one should never give up on what one really wants to do. The

person with big dreams is more powerful than the one with all the facts.

Spade Work



Madhubani painting has beautiful patterns of flowers, animals, birds, geometric

designs and scenes depicting natural objects like the sun, the moon, and religious

plants like the Tulsi.

In Warli Art, the central motif is surrounded

by hunting, fishing and farming scenes or

trees and animals.

Paper mâché is a traditional

Kashmiri art work. Glue-soaked

newspaper is stuck onto a surface

using the Lamination method.

Students created Paper mâché masks,

pots and vases. Students showed the

dexterity of their hands by using all

three art forms to create beauty.

The visitors appreciated the creative work of the

students which was displayed at the exhibition.



This activity was conducted to fine-tune the aesthetic sensibilities of the

students and teach them a new way of doing flower arrangements.


Power-point presentation on ‘Haiku’ researched and

compiled by the students of class-VII.


After making the power-point presentation the students

were motivated enough to compose Haiku poems.

The students presented a skit on the

importance of trees to build a clean, healthy,

diverse world for generations to come. They

depicted that all kinds of trees are necessary

to man’s existence. The skit also highlighted

the ideas specific to Indian community like

Chipko Movement and Taru Bandhan.

THE GREEN GENERATION – DIPSITES


Van Mahotsav is an

annual tree-planting

festival in India,

celebrated in the first

week of July. Planting

of trees is a symbolic

gesture to celebrate our

reverence for all things

that grow in the forest.

Dipsites are taking up

the mantle of saving

and preserving the

Earth for the future

generations.
