Another rape reported, adding to the city’s notoriety for being unsafe. In the beginning of the year, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) of the Home Ministry revealed just how unsafe the city was. 489 rape cases were reported in Delhi in 2010 against the previous year’s figures of 459. Mumbai and Bhopal came in second on the list with 189 and 117 cases respectively. As per the records, abduction and molestation of women also increased in Delhi. 1379 out of total 3544 cases of abduction took place in the capital. Reports also stated at that time that a woman was raped every 18 hours or mo-

lested every 14 hours in the capital. A number of cases go unreported as well. The question remains, what will this year’s statistics reveal?In the latest incident to come to light, a cab driver employed with a private cab company allegedly raped a 22 year old who had hired the cab to take her to her home in Vasant Kunj from Gurgaon. Government okays key anti-graft bills to counter Anna threat

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) Pushed into a corner by an aggressive op-position and the looming threat of Anna Hazare, the government Tuesday okayed a slew of anti-graft bills to tackle corruption at high places, including in the judiciary, and arrived at a "broad consensus" on the Lokpal Bill with its United Progressive Alliance (UPA) allies.

The cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, approved the Judicial Stand-ards and Accountability Bill, the Grievances Redressal Bill and the whistleblowers' protection bill, a slew of anti-corruption legislations expected to help blunt criticism from the opposition and Team Anna about the government's re-solve to fight graft. The three bills were cleared even as Hazare has demanded that grievance redres-sal should be part of the Lokpal bill and the judiciary should also be brought in the ambit of the anti-graft ombudsman. The cabinet de-cision came on a day when Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati refused to back the government on the Lokpal bill in its current form.

Keen on building wide political consensus on the Lokpal bill, with the opposition joining hands with

Hazare to oppose some recom-mendations of the standing com-mittee, the government also tried to bring its allies on board so the UPA presents a united approach at the all-party meeting on the Lokpal Wednesday.

UPA on its approach to the Lokpal," Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters after the meeting.

The Congress core too group met earlier in the day.

Team Anna member Prashant Bhushan, however, termed the three bills as "mere window-dressing".

"The issue is if government is serious about bringing down cor-ruption. Just having bills is not enough," Bhushan said in a discus-sion on a news channel.

"It obviously in only window dressing."

The 74-year-old Hazare also reit-erated his threat to resume protests from Dec 27 if a strong Jan Lokpal bill was not passed in the winter session of parliament.

Hazare went on a daylong fast Sunday and found backing from leaders of several parties, includ-ing the BJP, the Communists, the Janata Dal-United, Biju Janata Dal and Telugu Desam Party.

AMRI's Dhakuria unit suspends medical treatment

Kolkata, Dec 13 (IANS) Four days after the fire that left 93 dead, AMRI Hospital Tuesday night decided to suspend medical treatment at its en-tire Dhakuria unit in south Kolkata citing "lack of congenial working at-mosphere", hours after Chief Min-ister Mamata Banerjee faced angry protests from hospital employees who shouted at her not to take away their jobs.

While the Annexe 1 building, rav-aged by fire, had seen its license can-celled by the authorities, the Annexe

2 building was also shut down after the tragedy. Only the main build-ing was operational till Tuesday where some of the survivors of the blaze and other patients were being treated.

"Now there is not a single indoor patient. Some of the patients have been discharged, some sent to our Women and Child Care hospital at Mukundarpur (in the city's southern outskirts) and our hospital at Salt Lake. A few have been shifted to oth-er hospitals,' said an AMRI source.

Mullaperiyar Dam: Apex court seeks centre's response

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) The Su-preme Court Tuesday asked the cen-tral government to respond to Tamil Nadu's plea seeking a Central In-dustrial Security Force (CISF) shield for Kerala's Mullaperiyar Dam that serves the neighbouring state. It also warned both the state governments to refrain from inflaming the passions of people on the issue.

The court pulled up the Tamil Nadu government for using its oral observa-tions reported in newspapers in an advertisement for political gains.

No diktat, but open to all-party meet on TV content: Soni

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) With members of parliament voicing con-cern over objectionable content on TV channels, the government Tuesday said it was open to an all-party meet-ing to discuss the issue, but made it clear it was against issuing any diktat.

"I have no objection if a law is made after an all-party meeting is convened

by the prime minister in which views of everyone are taken in writing," In-formation and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said while replying to a supplementary during question hour in the Lok Sabha.

"We are getting views. After collat-ing the views, we want to bring a law which is beyond the self-regulatory

body which has been set up," she add-ed.

Soni informed the upper house that a draft Broadcasting Services Regula-tion Bill has already been posted on the ministry's website and a final bill could be brought for parliament's con-sideration after getting feedback from various stakeholders.

Court rejects Bangaru Laxman's plea in graft case

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Tuesday dis-missed former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Bangaru Laxman's plea seeking direction to the Central Bureau of Investiga-tion (CBI) to re-arrest an approver in a graft case against him.

re-arrest T. Satyamurthy, a co-ac-cused who was granted pardon by the trial court after he turned an approver in the case.

The former BJP president sought the re-arrest of Satyamurthy, say-ing that legal provisions required an approver to remain in jail till the conclusion of the trial.

Laxman sought the quashing of the first information report (FIR) lodged by the CBI, after he was caught on camera taking money from an undercover journalists, posing as arms dealers, for recom-mending to the defence ministry the purchase of their wares for the army.

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) The nation on Tuesday paid homage to the mar-tyrs of the Parliament House terrorist strike 10 years ago that led to a flare-up on the India-Pakistan borders, while families of the victims demanded ex-peditious execution of Afzal Guru, the surviving conspirator sentenced to death for the audacious crime.

“Till the time Afzal Guru is hanged, there will be no honour for the mar-tyrs in the parliament attack. When the Supreme Court of India has given a death penalty to Afzal Guru, why has he not been brought to book,” asked 23-year-old Bipin Adana, the son of Delhi Police head constable Vijendra Singh, who was killed in that terror attack.

“For all the families who lost their dear ones, the main issue is Guru. Why is the traitor not being punished? This is really sad,” said Adana, who runs a petrol pump allotted to him by the government as compensation for having lost his father at a young age.

On Dec 13, 2001, just around 11 a.m. when the two houses of parlia-ment assembled for the day’s sitting, five heavily armed gunmen posing as security detail of a VVIP stormed the Indian Parliament House and opened indiscriminate fire, killing nine people instantly.

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) In yet another incident that proves how unsafe the National Capital Region (NCR) is for women working late, a 22-year-old woman, working as a pub attendant in Gurgaon, was allegedly raped by a cab driver in south Delhi, police said on Tues-day.

Shiv Kumar, aged around 30 and a resident of Khanpur in Delhi, was arrested on Tuesday evening after

the victim lodged a complaint.According to police, the inci-

dent took place at around 3 a.m. on Tuesday in Mehrauli area when the victim after finishing her shift in a pub in the suburban town of Gur-gaon hired the cab.

“She hired the Indigo cab to take her to her residence in Vasant Kunj in south Delhi. However, the driver took her to a deserted spot in Chat-tarpur area in south Delhi and

raped her,” said a police official.“He later dropped her at an iso-

lated spot and threatened her with dire consequences if she reported the matter to police,” said police.

The victim hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh town and came to Delhi last year. She was residing in a rented accommoda-tion in Vasant Kunj whereas the accused is employed with a private tour company.

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) Bol-lywood megastar Amitabh Bach-chan has lent his baritone to soul-stirring words penned by Prasoon Joshi in “13 December”, a documentary made for the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the Indian parliament.

The documentary traces the planning and execution of the terror attack, in which five heav-ily armed gunmen stormed the parliament house complex and opened indiscriminate firing, killing nine people on the spot.

Joshi’s words are dedicated to the iron will and strong deter-mination of the Indian security men who fought off the attack, said a press statement.

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) Irked over the closure of 84 temporary night shelters in the national capital against its orders, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed the city government to reopen them imme-diately.

Directing the government to re-start the shelters, a division bench of acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw pulled up the Delhi government for shutting down the night shelters citing low occupancy. The judges also directed the government to equip the night shelters with all basic facilities.

The direction of the high court came a day after the Supreme Court ordered all state governments to pro-vide night shelters in order to ensure that no person died of the cold.

The court rejected the conten-tion of the Delhi government that a majority of the night shelters in the capital were lying unused and there was no need to construct further shelters. The shelters had been shut down in summer.

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has proposed to “regular-ise” the excess area constructed in the Commonwealth Games village apartments after the builder pays the amount for the extra construc-tion, parliament was informed on Tuesday.

“A proposal has been received from DDA to regularise the excess area built by the project develop-er after he pays market price for such excess area built by him. The proposal of DDA is under active consideration of the government,” Minister of State for Urban Devel-opment Saugata Roy said in a writ-ten reply in the Lok Sabha.

DDA has informed since the completion certificate for the CWG village flats is yet to be is-sued, the handing over of the flats to buyers could not be started, he said.

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) The Del-hi Metro Rail Corporation has the right to use the land acquired for the project for property development also, Minister of State for Urban De-velopment Saugata Roy informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

“Three hectares of land were ac-quired by DMRC under the Land Acquisition Act, 1894 from a private party for Viswavidyalaya Metro Sta-tion. Out of this, two hectares have been leased out to M/s Young Build-ers for residential development,” the minister said in a written reply.

Roy said DMRC had informed the developer to plan his develop-ment strictly as per approvals from the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and other civic authorities.

In another written reply, Roy said DMRC has given some land plots on lease for commercial use to private parties.

“The land pockets were given on lease and concession through open tenders. In cases, where no respons-es were received to tenders, the leas-ing was done through negotiation,” Roy said.

Washington, Dec 13 (IANS) US De-fense Secretary Leon Panetta Mon-day hoped that the US will be able to mend its strained ties with Pakistan, because a stable relationship with Is-lamabad is key to win the US war in Afghanistan.

Panetta said that restoring the strained relationship with Pakistan is critical to the long-term progress in Afghanistan, reported Xinhua.

The US defense chief conceded that the US relationship with Pakistan has been “difficult and complicated”, while emphasizing that “it is an im-portant relationship, and it is one we have to continue to work at”.

Panetta emphasized that the mis-

sion of fighting terrorism supports both the US’ and Pakistan’s interests.

Meanwhile Pakistani Prime Min-ister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Tuesday asked NATO to answer the “disturb-ing questions” about last month’s air strikes on two Pakistani army border posts that killed 24 soldiers.

NATO is still investigating the Nov 26 strikes in Pakistan’s Mohmand tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

“We expect the US-NATO-ISAF inquiry that is being undertaken to come out clearly with the facts and provide answers to the disturbing questions that our own investigations have raised,” Online news agency quoted Gilani as saying.

Gilani said the attacks constituted a “huge setback” to the prospects of much-needed cooperation between all important stakeholders.

Brussels, Dec 13 (IANS) At least four people were killed and 75 injured Tuesday when an armed man opened fire and threw several grenades at a crowded city square in eastern Bel-gium’s Liege city, media reports said.

According to BBC, the gunman -- identified as Nordine Amrani -- opened fire and threw the grenades into the Place Saint Lambert from a rooftop before blowing himself up with a grenade.

The attacker was known to police for firearms offences.

Earlier, citing Belga news agency,

Xinhua reported that three men were involved in the attack. They first be-gan to shoot at the crowd and then threw the grenades at a bus stop.

Officials later said the attacker act-ed alone, and that it wasn’t a terrorist assault.

Television images showed blood splattered across the cobblestones of Place Saint Lambert.

Doctors at a city hospital were try-ing to save the life of an 18-month-old boy injured in the attack. Six others are also reported to be in serious condition.

Islamabad, Dec 13 (IANS) Several mem-bers of the minority Sikh community in Pakistan Tuesday joined cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, a media report said. Sikh leader Sahib Singh made the announcement at a press conference at the Peshawar Press Club, Online news agency reported.

Sahib Singh said he and his commu-nity expect security of the rights of the minorities.

Shaukat Ali Yousafzai, political advi-sor to party chief Imran Khan, welcomed the newcomers.

Washington, Dec 14 (IANS) NASA’s car-sized Curiosity rover has begun monitoring space radiation during its eight-month trip from Earth to Mars, the US space agency said Tuesday.

Curiosity was launched Nov 26. The research will aid in planning for future human missions to the Red Planet.

It carries an instrument called the Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) that monitors high-energy atomic and subatomic particles from the sun, dis-tant supernovas and other sources.

These particles constitute radiation that could be harmful to any microbes or astronauts in space or on Mars. The rover will monitor radiation on the surface of Mars after its August 2012 landing.

“RAD is serving as a proxy for an as-tronaut inside a spacecraft on the way to Mars,” Xinhua quoted Don Hassler, RAD’s principal investigator from the Southwest Research Institute in Boul-der, Colorado, as saying.

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) After suc-cessfully implementing gross national happiness -- an alternative develop-ment indicator -- in his country, Bhuta-nese Prime Minister Lyonchhen Jigme Y. Thinley will be speaking on the con-cept in India.

in India New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) India's mobile marketing space, which some analysts estimate at Rs.600 million ($11 million), will grow 10-fold in the next five years, says the Finnish pioneer of the concept. "Mobile marketing has started to grow rapidly in India as the brands see the opportunities beyond just internet options. My estimation is the market-place in mobile marketing in India will grow 10-fold within the next five years," Antti Ohrling, co-founder in 2005 of the Blyk mobile marketing company, told IANS in an e-mail inter-view. While Ohrling has now decided to move on from Blyk, he plans to maintain a close connect with India, where he in-troduced the company a year ago and where it has over one million opted-in users and has delivered 40 mobile ad-

vertising campaigns. "I have planned to stay extremely close to India, as the potential really is here," Ohrling said about the country, which has 881 mil-lion mobile phone connections. Mo-

bile marketing is a service that subscribers opt for as opposed to pesky SMSes.

US stocks drop for second

straight dayNew York, Dec 14 (IANS): US stocks dropped all early gains and ended lower for the second straight day Tuesday after the Federal Reserve offered no im-mediate measures to boost the economy, Xinhua reported. The Dow Jones industrial aver-age dropped 66.45 points, or 0.55 percent, to 11,954.94. The Standard & Poor's 500 was down 10.74 points, or 0.87 percent, to 1,225.73. The Nasdaq Compos-ite Index fell 32.99 points, or 1.26 percent, to 2,579.27.

In a statement after the last rate-setting meeting this year, the Fed left its interest rates on hold and gave no hint on any quantitative easing plan for the time being. Meanwhile, the Fed acknowledged "some improve-ment in overall labour market conditions" but the tone of the statement was relatively down-beat given better-than-expected recent data.

Energy subsidies unsustainable, reforms needed: Experts

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS): Energy sector experts Tuesday warned the government that the current levels of subsidies for petroleum products were unsustainable and called for reforms in the segment to promote invest-ments. "The political leadership will not be able to sustain this level of sub-sidy for long. They will be forced to ini-tiate reforms in the energy sector as in the 1990s," said S.C. Tripathi, a former petroleum secretary, at the 10th Petro India conference.

The government in the current fis-cal will have to bear a energy subsidy burden of more than Rs.180,000 crore, which might increase due to a depre-ciating rupee. Though the government

had in June last year decontrolled pet-rol prices, it continues to dictate retail rates of diesel, cooking gas (liquefied petroleum gas) sold to households and kerosene sold through the public distribution system (PDS). The gov-ernment was currently providing a subsidy of Re.0.82 per litre on kerosene and Rs.22.58 per cylinder of cooking gas in the current fiscal. It provided Rs.44,371 crore to the oil marketing companies (OMCs) through cash as-sistance, freight subsidy and natural gas subsidy in 2010-11. According to the experts, the subsidies on petroleum products cost more than Rs.200,000 crores which is expected to throw the public finances into a big mess.

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS): The gov-ernment Tuesday said state-run banks have lent Rs.6,901.86 crore to the cash-strapped Kingfisher Airlines. Minis-ter of State for Finance Namo Narain Meena said public sector banks (PSB) had so far an exposure of Rs.5,792.66 crore through fund-based and non-fund-based limits in the airline. Also, they had put in Rs.1,109.20 crore through investment in cumulative redeemable preference shares (CRPS) and non-convertible cumulative re-deemable preference shares (NC-CRPS), Meena said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. Defending the lend-ers, including the State Bank of India, who have been alleged to have bought overvalued shares of Kingfisher as col-lateral, the minister said this was done under the master debt recast arrange-ment (MDRA) with the airline. "There was no overvaluation to accommo-date the airline," he said. "In terms of MDRA, a portion of the debt was carved out and issued as CRPS, which was subsequently converted into eq-uity shares of Kingfisher Airlines at a price of Rs.64.48 per share March 31, 2011, as against the prevailing market price of Rs.39.90 per share." The min-ister said the banks took 11,63,30,639 equity shares of the airline. The minis-ter added that the banks had made an

investment of about Rs.750.10 crore in the airlines shares and that the market value of these shares on Dec 7 stood at Rs.298.39 crore.

100 years since Kolkata lost the crown

A hundred years have passed since India's capital was shift-ed to Delhi from Kolkata.

Some say the transfer was a 'blessing in disguise', but many say it turned this city into a 'colonial relic' and hampered its development.

King Emperor George V Dec 12, 1911 at the Great Coronation Durbar at Delhi announced: "We have decid-ed upon the transfer of the seat of the government of India, from Calcutta to the ancient capital of Delhi..."

Historian P.T. Nair, called the 'Chronicler of Calcutta' who has penned over 50 books on the city, said the decision was a blessing in disguise and gave the city space to grow edu-cationally and culturally.

"Indian Nobel laureates, from Ra-bindranath Tagore to Amartya Sen, are from the city and they all got the recognition only after 1911, with Tagore becoming the first Asian win-ner of the award just two years later," said Nair.

The establishment of the country's first Indian Institute of Management in 1961 was a case in point, he said.

Calcutta, then capital of undivided Bengal, was a hotbed of the revolu-tionary movement and the transfer came only months after the British government had to annul its plan to partition Bengal, following intense protests led by the Indian National Congress and also Tagore .

"Bengal, especially Calcutta, had been politically very conscious. The revolutionary movement and the overall freedom movement had its seeds in Bengal. To counter this, they shifted the capital and the fact that Delhi was centrally located also helped," said Nair.

Calcutta, on the east bank of river Hooghly, became the capital under British East India Company rule in 1772. The city flourished politically and commercially. Other than the first multidisciplinary modern uni-versity in South Asia - the Calcutta University in 1857 - the city also got Asia's first college of European medi-cine - the Medical College Bengal in 1835.

The first printed English newspa-per in the subcontinent came out of the city in 1789 when James Hicky published The Bengal Gazette .

Later, the partition of the country in 1947 dealt a blow as a large chunk referred to as East Bengal went to Pa-kistan. Calcutta, which became the capital of West Bengal, got a huge influx of refugees from East Pakistan which continued even after the 1971 Bangladesh war.

Economist Bipul Malakar said the transfer of capital turned the city into a 'colonial relic'.

"The city and the state have suf-fered the most in infrastructure. Had it continued to be the capital, all the development that Delhi has seen over the years would have been here. Kol-kata is nothing more than a colonial relic now," said Malakar.

The communists gained in strength and came to power in West Bengal in 1967, as the largest ally of the United Front government. The regime supported militant trade un-ionism.

Flight of capital from the state began, marking the decline of the once industrially strong West Ben-gal. During the communist led Left Front rule 1977-2011, the trade union movement grew stronger. Despite successes on the rural front during its 34-year rule, the Left Front drew flak for the city's falling medical services and politicisation of education.

On Jan 1, 2001, Calcutta tried to toss away its colonial past by chang-ing the name and adopted its Bengali equivalent Kolkata.

Roy Chowdhury said the decision to shift the capital to Delhi hindered the political development of the region.

"The British trend to marginalise leaders from Bengal continued even after independence with leaders from the north denying the centrestage to those from here."

"As the political dominance of the state diminished, a decline on sev-eral fronts, especially on the industry front began, ultimately hindering the state's overall growth," said Roy Chowdhury.

Footballer Chuni Goswami who captained India to the Asian Games Gold Medal in 1962 said the decision was a loss for Kolkata.

"Look at Delhi, it is flourishing. Had Kolkata been the capital, it too would have developed. People would have made big investments," 74-year-old Goswami told IANS .

Eminent Bengali author Sirshendu Mukherjee, however, said Delhi was more suitable to be the capital.

"Though it was certainly a loss for the city, I think Delhi was the right choice. It is not only centrally located but also a planned city which has enabled it to house the numerous of-fices which a capital of the country requires," he said.

Chidambaram visits Jharkhand, Odisha to review Maoist operations

Ranchi/Bhubaneswar, Nov 9 (IANS) Union Home Minister P. Chidam-baram Wednesday visited the Mao-ist-affected states of Jharkhand and Odisha to review operations against the rebels and also implementation of the developmental schemes in areas hit by Leftwing extremism.

In Ranchi, Chidambaram said he was reasonably satisfied with the im-plementation of Integrated Action Plan (IAP) in Jharkhand’s Maoist districts.

“I am reasonably satisfied with IAP implementation going in Jharkhand districts. More needs to be done. There has been significant success in Maoist operations between June and

October,” Chidambaram told report-ers.

He said “Jharkhand is one of the most Maoist affected states of the country. There are 14 battalions of CRPF and two battalions of Cobra forces are in Jharkhand. There are enough forces to deal with the Maoist menace in the state.”

The meeting was attended by Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda, state police Chief G.S. Rath and other senior got officials. Sources said Chidambaram asked the state government to implement central schemes properly in the Maoist af-fected districts.

Chamoli (Uttarakhand)/New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) Congress president Sonia Gandhi Wednesday hit out at Team Anna and said the party and the UPA government were com-mitted to a strong anti-corruption ombudsman (Lokpal). Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal expressed hope the bill would be passed in the winter session of parliament.

The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that Gandhi’s comments “reflects their views”.

Welcoming Sonia’s statement, read out in absentia in Chamoli (Utt-

arakhand), Kejriwal expressed hope “the Congress would keep its word and pass the legislation in the winter session starting Nov 22”.

Hitting out at Team Anna for threatening another agitation on the Lokpal bill, Sonia Gandhi said “Corruption cannot be fought by speeches, so I don’t understand why this noise.”

She also reminded Team Anna that “It was the National Advisory Council (NAC) headed by me which had first started public consultations for a Lokpal”.

This is the first time the film festival is being held after Bhattacharjee demitted office following the Left Front’s rout in the April-May assembly elections. The festival is considered Bhattacharjee’s brainchild. Banerjee told Bhat-tacharjee, an avid film buff, “it will make me happy if you come for the inauguration”. However, the former chief minister cited pre-occupation with another programme which will keep him away.

New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) Sanjay Chaudhary, a close aide of jailed former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda, was arrested in Dubai Wednesday on an Interpol red corner notice, the CBI said, adding it would initiate steps for his extradition. Chaudhary is ac-cused of investing Koda’s dubious funds by using his contacts in the alleged siphoning of public money.

Notice to CBI on bail plea of Kanimozhi, four others

New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday sought the CBI’s reply by Dec 1 on the bail pleas of DMK MP Kanimozhi and four other accused in the 2G scam and asked the jail officials for a medical report on accused Cineyug Films founder Karim Morani.

A notice was issued to the Cen-tral Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after hearing arguments on behalf of Kanimozhi, Kalaignar TV chief Sharad Kumar, Karim Morani and Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt. Ltd. directors Asif Balwa and Rajiv B. Agarwal.

The court also directed Tihar Jail superintendent to submit a medical report on Morani, who has sought bail on health grounds. Appearing for Kanimozhi, a senior advocate contended bench that the trial court ignored the CBI’s willingness to al-low bail to the five accused.

“A set of accused who came in ap-peal against the trail court bail de-nial order are not made accused in the principle charge sheet, in which former communications minister A. Raja is named,” said the defence counsel.

Mumbai, Nov 9 (IANS) The Bom-bay High Court Wednesday reject-ed the bail application of Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit, one of the prime accused in the Malegaon 2008 blast case, a legal official said.

The court, while rejecting the bail application on grounds that “prima facie material was avail-able against” Purohit, said that a detailed order would be delivered soon, according to advocate Sharif Shaikh, an intervener appearing in the matter on behalf of family members of a victim in the blast.

“The state had opposed the bail plea stating that the investiga-tions into the Malegaon blast was transferred from the state Anti-

Terrorism Squad to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) vide a notification last April,” Shaikh told IANS.

He said the grounds for opposing bail were since the NIA investiga-tions are still continuing, granting bail to Purohit could hamper the ongoing probe into the terror in-cident in the minority-dominated town in Nashik district of north Maharashtra.

Prasad was among 11 accused in the blast case, including Sadhvi Pragnya Singh Thakur. Alleged to be linked to a right-wing organiza-tion, Purohit has been continuously in custody since his arrest for his role in the blast case.

Jammu, Nov 9 (IANS) The Uni-fied Command Wednesday evening asked the two panels looking into the question of revoking the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) to “speed up” their recommenda-tions.

The two panels, with two Corps Commanders of the Indian Army, Director General of Police and

Principal Secretary, Home, were constituted in September last year to suggest the areas from where the Disturbed Area Act and AFSPA could be lifted. But the panels were not able to finalise their recommen-dations.

Official sources told IANS at the conclusion of more than three-hour-long meeting of the unified com-

mand held in the civil secretariat and chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and senior army com-manders, that it has been decided to “speed up the work and make rec-ommendations about the removal of AFSPA as early as possible”.

“However, no deadline has been suggested at the meeting,” the official told IANS.

Sharma told the apex court that the high court had itself extended the stay and thus, there was no immediate need for action.

Elizabeth AnthonyA banker by profession, a social activist by choice and an artist at heart!

She has never had any formal training in art and yet when she stands in front of her canvas, she is able to capture on it sceneries and landscapes, some from places she has been to and others from those she is yet to set her eyes upon.

Over the past few years Elizabeth Anthony or ‘Elzy’ has been painting as a hobby and it wasn’t until re-cently that she decided to exhibit her works of art. But for those who are unaware of the artist’s background, these paintings reveal nothing but

an experienced hand and a creative mind.

She was born and educated in a sub-urban village in Kerala and committing to the usual pressures of society decided to take on a career in banking starting off in the post of a junior clerical staff. Over time, as she rose up the ranks, she attempted to maintain a balance between a full time job and her responsibilities at home and with that her passion took a back seat, that is, until she retired recently. From the cozy comforts of Kerala to the bustling fast lanes of Delhi, her paintings infact divulge her position at the crossroads of

nature on one hand and urban change on the other.

It was four years ago when she decid-ed that she would try and contribute more to society and estab-lished the Navoothan Charitable Founda-tion dedicated to the upliftment of underprivileged fam-ilies and individuals. One of the key areas that the foundation is presently working on is support-ing cancer victims who are unable to afford the treatment. In a bid to draw awareness to the plight of these patients and raise enough money to aid them, Elizabeth decided recently to sell most of the paintings she has done over the years and donate all the proceeds to this cause. There are two areas which her foundation is fo-

cusing on: Creating a general awareness about the disease and creating a sense of shared responsi-bility amongst the public.

“Art for me is a tool that I am using to draw attention to the causes and the values for which I stand. The fact that it is also my passion definitely helps.” According

to Elizabeth, the money earned from the sale of all her paintings together will barely be able to cover the treat-ment of but a handful of patients, and yet she hopes that the awareness generated through her exhibitions and her work will be a wakeup call for society.

Mexican food is a bit under rated in India and the possible reasons for this could be heavy concentration by people on either junk food or fancy restaurant food and ultimately for most people Mexican food falls in neither category. Mexican food is a delight not only because of it being a complete meal but also because it offers a lot of variety in both, food and beverages. Drinks like the Margarita and Tequila and food like Chilli corn carne, chimichanga and enchilada’s are known yet not valued much. But it surely deserves a better chance to be tasted by the food lovers in India.

in Madhya PradeshBhopal, Dec 13 (IANS) Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has written to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressing his desire to establish a sports acad-emy and school in the state to promote talent, an official said on Tuesday.

Dhoni said he wishes to groom the state's talent with complete dedication and com-mitment not only in the field of the cricket, but in other sports too.

Requesting Chouhan to make the suitable sites available for establishment of these insti-tutions, Dhoni wrote: "Many

youths wish to bring laurels to the state and the country as well. And our efforts would make their dreams come true."

"Several youths and sports persons of the country wish to represent the country in differ-ent fields. However, they could not deliver the goods due to non availability of proper infrastruc-ture and training facilities," he said in his letter, the official said.

Dhoni added that he wishes to set up a sports school where children could attain excellence in the field of sports and in edu-cation as well besides develop discipline, commitment and spirit of hard labour.

Ghosal enters pre-quarters of Punj Lloyd Squash

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) India's Saurav Ghosal played the short game to his advantage to beat Ju-lian Illingworth of the US 12-10, 11-4, 11-2 in the opening round of the $165,000 Punj Lloyd PSA Squash Masters on Tues-day.

It is often said getting a lead in the match is crucial for a players' chances and this worked in favour of 29th-ranked Ghosal.

Though Ghosal played to his strengths in the first set, he gave four free points to Illingworth by coming in his way while the American was attempting a shot. Yet, the Kolkata player managed a 6-4 lead courtesy some brilliant drop shots and cross-court volleys.

Illingworth came back to take the next four points but at 11-10, Ghosal's backhand smash found a nick and there was no way Illingworth could get hold of the ball.

From there on, Ghosal ran away with the contest with Illingworth

failing to match his pace. Illingworth, who beat the Indian in their last meeting in the World Team Cham-pionships at Padderborn, Germany, said he was "hesitant" in his game and Ghosal took advantage of that.

Illingworth's frustration was also evident when he expressed displeas-ure over a referee's decision at the end of the first set.

Ghosal, on the other hand, was happy to register a win in his home tournament and said he executed his game plan to perfection.

Aslam Sher Khan elected president of Olympian Association

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) The Olympian Association of India has been formed here with hockey Olym-pian Aslam Sher Khan elected as president while Randhir Singh, sec-retary general of the Indian Olympic Association, will be the chief patron.

The first meeting of the associa-tion, formed Monday, was held on Tuesday at the Olympic Bhawan here and the office bearers were elected.

Ranji Trophy: Mukund puts Tamil Nadu in strong position

Mukund, who missed out on a berth in the Indian Test squad for Australia, has once again proved why he is one of the frontrunners for the coveted slot after ending the day unbeaten on 150.

Delhi boy Sumit wins American Cup Tennis New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) Delhi boy Sumit Nagal won the under-14 boys American Cup Tennis Cham-pionship at the Miccosukee Tennis Club in Miami, Florida.

Sumit defeated Canada's David Volfson 1-6, 6-1 and 10-6 in an in-tense battle on Saturday that lasted nearly two and a half hours. Sumit got off to a nervous start before set-tling down and using his power to control the points with his fore-hand.

"I was inconsistent in the first set, I just wanted to calm down and play the way I know I can play in the second and third sets and I

did that," Nagal, who splits his time of training between Delhi and To-ronto with his coach Bobby Mahal, said in a statement. Mahal is the first Indian player to win the event.

Some top players like Fernando Gonzalez (1994), Marcos Baghda-tis (1999), Andy Murray (2000), Novak Djokovic (2001) have won the tournament in past.

Sumit now gets ready for the 50th Annual Junior Orangebowl in Miami, Florida, December 17-23.

Injured Cilic drops out of Chennai Open

Chennai, Dec 13 (IANS) Two-time Aircel Chennai Open sin-gles champion Marin Cilic of Croatia has been ruled out of the 2012 edition of India's only ATP World Tour event due to a tendon injury.

The tournament will be held here from Jan 2 to 8 and will see in action an impres-sive line-up of Indian and in-ternational players, including World No. 9 Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia and No.10 Nicolas Almagro of Spain, defending champion Stanislas Wawrinka from Switzerland and former champion Xavier Malisse of Belgium.

Cilic, winner of the singles title in 2009 and 2010, suffered a patella tendon injury which has ruled him out of the Chen-nai Open as well as the season's first Grand Slam, the Austral-ian Open. Karol Beck of Slova-kia, ranked No.100, has been included in the main draw.

"Having started the previous five seasons at the Chennai Open, the city is a home away from home for me. Only an injury could have kept me away from the tournament," Cilic said in a release.

Buffon saves Totti's penalty to extend Juventus' unbeaten streak

Rome, Dec 13 (IANS) Legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon saved Francesco Totti's second-half pen-alty as Juventus registered a 1-1 draw at Roma to extend their un-beaten run in Italian Serie A foot-ball to 14 games.

Daniele De Rossi had put the hosts in front in the sixth minute, but Giorgio Chiellini equalised on the hour mark. Roma had a chance to go in front two minutes later but Totti's spot kick was saved by Buf-fon.

Cricketer Harbhajan's stolen bag recovered

Karnal (Haryana), Dec 13 (IANS) Haryana Police on Tuesday recov-ered international cricketer Harb-hajan Singh's bag which was stolen from his SUV outside a popular cafe on National High No.1 (NH-1) on Monday evening.

The bag was found abandoned in an open area in Sector 13 of Kar-nal and the police recovered it after someone informed about it, a police official said.

Police officials said that Harbha-jan Singh's passport and other docu-ments, including ATM and credit cards, were found inside the recov-ered bag. However, nearly Rs.9,500 in cash were missing.

Some unidentified thieves broke into Harbhajan's Ford Endeavour (SUV) by smashing the window-pane of the rear door on the busy NH-1 on Monday. The break-in took place around 6 p.m. outside Cafe Coffee Day outlet at Madhuban near Karnal.

The cricketer immediately called the police for help and later left af-ter filing a complaint about the theft from his vehicle.

Incidentally, Harbhajan is him-self employed as a deputy superin-tendent (DSP) with Punjab Police. He was driving to New Delhi from Chandigarh with his friend when the incident happened.

Acted in compliance of contractual obligations: Nimbus

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) Sports broadcaster Nimbus, whose contract with the Indian board was termi-nated on Monday on grounds of de-faulting payments, said on Tuesday that it had "acted in compliance of its contractual obligations".

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) terminated its con-tract, that ran till 2014, and also seized the bank guarantee amount of Rs.2,000 crore, after Nimbus default-ed on payments. Nimbus also failed to pay the BCCI 50 percent advance payment for both the England and the West Indies series

"Given the confidentiality provi-sions of such contracts, Nimbus is unable to discuss details with the media, but can confirm that it has

acted in compliance of its contractu-al obligations and variations agreed between the parties from time to time," Nimbus said in a statement.

"Obviously, it has fully reserved all its rights and options, including invoking the arbitration process if need be. No further statement will be made by Nimbus in this regard till its discussions with BCCI are concluded in the coming weeks," it further said. Nimbus first signed a four-year deal in 2005-06 and renewed it in 2009 for a whopping Rs.2,000 crore after being offered the first right of refusal. They had had paid Rs.24 crore ahead of the working committee meeting here Monday morning but there was still an outstanding amount of Rs.88 crore.

Gavaskar slams BCCI

for u-turn on his contract

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has blasted the crick-et board after its refusal to pay him $1 million fee per season for media activities involv-ing the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The decision was taken at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) working commit-tee meeting on Monday.

"BCCI has made a u-turn on my contract. I am baffled af-ter reading reports that BCCI has refused to pay me my dues and my faith in BCCI has been shaken," Gavaskar told NDTV.

Gavaskar said he got an as-surance from BCCI president Sharad Pawar that his dues will be cleared.

"Sharad Pawar and Arun Jaitely both promised me on phone that my dues will be cleared. In fact, Sharad Pawar and Lalit Modi had promised me a Rs.4 crore IPL contract in 2007," he said.

Producer Ritesh Sidhwani also tweeted: "Feeling sad couldn't make it to Patna. Was waiting to take off from Mumbai but was told that we cannot land in Patna. Next stop Nagpur!"

The 24-year-old was spotted at a Sprinkles Cupcakes store in New York Dec 9 making deserts which will be sold to raise cash for charity. "She came in with girlfriends to create it. Blake (Lively) helped design and add her own touches to it. It's a S'mores cupcake. It features a Graham cracker bottom, deep gooey chocolate, and a S'mores-like burned-marshmallowy top," femalefirst.co.uk quoted Lively as saying. The cupcake will be launched in January next year and all proceeds will benefit Ox-fam International Somalia.

Los Angeles, Dec 13 (IANS): Actress Rooney Mara says she is happy to get rid of her feminine signature look for "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". She underwent drastic transformation for her role as Lisbeth Sa-lander and according to reports she will have to live with it till at least 2015. "Before 'Dragon Tattoo', I dressed very much like girls. A lot of blush-colored things. Now I literally roll out of bed and put on whatever is there. I have really enjoyed being a boy this last year," she told US Vogue. Mara also revealed that she was given a make-over by makeup artist Pat McGrath, costume designer Trish Summerville and hairstylist Danilo. McGrath created 26 differ-ent looks for her. "We went from the white-powdered sick-clown makeup to stitches in the face all the way to greasy, bloody eyes. I in-stantly knew how I could make her character so different. And then once the hair was cut in that mad shape, I was like, Well, the eyebrows have got to go. And in the end, it would look now and it would look new,"said McGrath.

Nevaan too young to be over-exposed, says Sonu Niigaam

Mumbai, Dec 13 (IANS): Ever since the original "Kolaveri Di" song has been released, several other versions of the number also have hit the web, including one by Sonu Niigaam's son, but the singer does not want to over-expose four-year-old Neevan. "He is too small, he is just four years old, so he couldn't have done this for himself. As his father, I thought I should record his childhood thing. I want to protect him right now. He is too young to be over-exposed," said the 38-year-old singer who began his singing career at the age of three, joining his father on stage for a Mohammad Rafi song. Sonu admits he never thought his son's version would become such a rage. "We did it only for the posterity's sake. We never thought that it will be such a big hit. I knew that if it is put on YouTube, it will have lots of hits, but didn't know that it will become so big," said Sonu at a press confer-ence at the Aamby Valley's annual New Year bash Glitterati 2012.
