Gujarat State has been a pioneer in organizing dairy cooperatives and its success has not only been emulated in India but serves

as a model for rest of the World. Over the last Six and a half decades, Dairy Cooperatives in Gujarat have created an economic

network that links more than 3.6 million village milk producers with millions of consumers in India and abroad through a cooperative

system that includes 18,545 Village Dairy Cooperative Societies (VDCS) at the village level, affiliated to 18 District Cooperative

Milk Producers’ Unions at the District level and GCMMF at the State level. These cooperatives collect on an average 17.0 million

Liters of milk per day from their producer members, more than 70% of whom are small, marginal farmers and landless labourers

and include a sizeable population of tribal folk and people belonging to the scheduled castes. As the entire movement started

from Anand district of Gujarat, it is famously known as “Anand Pattern” of dairy cooperative.

The “Anand Pattern” is an integrated cooperative structure that procures, processes and markets produce. “Anand Pattern” of

dairy cooperative structure is also known as “Three tier” structure which involves Village Dairy Cooperative Society (VDCS) at

Village level, District level member union and State level Milk Marketing Federation. Supported by professional management,

producers decide their own business policies, adopt modern production and marketing techniques and receive services that they

can individually neither afford nor manage. The Anand Pattern succeeds because it involves people in their own development

through cooperatives where professionals are accountable to leaders elected by producers. The institutional infrastructure - village

cooperative, Milk Union dairy and cattle feed plants, state and national marketing -- is owned and controlled by farmers.

Mr. Rupinder Singh Sodhi, age 57 years, is Managing Director of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, Ltd., (AMUL),

which is India’s largest Food Products organization with turnover of US$ 3.2 Billion in 2014-15. Mr. Sodhi has 34 years of rich

experience in leading & developing cooperative sector within Indian dairy industry, having served dairy farmers in several

capacities. He has been responsible for creating the current structure of the AMUL, enabling the organization to maintain and

enhance its leadership status within Indian dairy industry.

For more than three decades, Mr. Sodhi has worked under direct guidance & mentorship of father of white revolution, Dr. Verghese

Kurien and has ensured that values cherished by Dr. Kurien, such as integrity, dedication, courage, honesty, commitment to

farmers and to consumers, remained deeply ingrained in the culture of AMUL.

During his 6 year tenure as Managing Director of Amul cooperative, ensured that price to dairy farmers for milk procurement

increased by 90% in 6 years, from US$ 5.6 per Kg-fat in 2009 to US$ 10.67 per Kg-fat in 2015 and milk procurement of Amul

increased by 87% in 6 years, from 3.3 billion liters per annum in 2009-10 to 6.2 billion liters per annum in 2015-16.

Mr. R S Sodhi has ensured that Amul’s milk procurement operations extended beyond Gujarat state with his initiative to procure

milk from farmers of 8 other states of India including Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Goa, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya

Pradesh and West Bengal following the cooperative model. He championed use of Information Technology to seamlessly

integrate the entire value-chain of Amul from ‘Cow to Consumer’

Prof. (Dr.) M. N. Patel was born on 01-06-1952. He did his B. E. Civil in the year 1975 with distinction from S. P. University. Prof.

Patel did his Post Graduation (M. E., Civil_ Structures) from Gujarat University in 1990 and Ph. D. from D. D. University.

Prof. Patel started his career as a site engineer in Modern Construction Company, Mumbai in 1975. He also served in P.W.D. Of

Gujarat State as Jr. Engineer (Civil). On 25th June, 1976 Prof. Patel started his academic carrier as an Assistant Lecturer in

Civil Engineering at Sir B. P. T. I., Bhavnagar. After joining the noble profession of teaching, he served this profession in different

capacities like Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Professor and Principal at Government Engineering College, Modasa and L. D.

College of Engineering, Ahmedabad. As a head of institute, he tried to give new look to these institutes in all front. Due to his

efforts, many UG and many PG programs got NBA Accreditation. Prof. (Dr.) Patel was the Principal of L. D. College of Engineering

from 22nd of June 2004, to 21st Feb, 2014 for a period of 10 years.

From Feb, 2014, he has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Gujarat University where has has continued his service towards
