August 2014 Delaware Valley NCRS Chapter Newsletter Chairperson’s Notes By John Kane For those of you, who like to attend the Winter Regional in January each year, note that the location has now officially changed. It will be moved to Lakeland Florida at the Sun ‘n Fun facility. Information is still tentative because the Florida chapter is still working on finalizing of the arrangements. (editor’s note: for the latest info, visit http://www.ncrs.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?1TechnicalDiscussion and see the sticky at the top) We will be having our second of two cruise night meetings just prior to our regular August meeting. Previous cruise nights at our June and August meetings have been very well attended, so plan to fire up your Corvette and come to the back parking lot at 7PM on meeting night if you possibly can. During the meeting we will be hearing the final arrangements for the 2014 Carlisle Gallery from Elaine Raisner and Frank Stech. The National meet in Kansas City concluded recently and I am sure we will be hearing some great stories and seeing some interesting photographs from the Convention as well from Steve Gansky’s leg of the National Road Tour. A number of our members attended the Bloomington Gold event in June including Bob Cook and Irwin Kroiz who were both inducted into the Great Hall for their major contributions to the hobby in the early years. Bob Cook was inducted for all the work that he and his business partner, Bob Gold, put into organizing several of the very first auctions at the early Bloomington Gold Shows. Irwin Kroiz was inducted for his contribution in restoring and campaigning many of the early uniquely optioned cars and early race Corvettes. The new facility on the campus of University of Illinois in Champagne was under construction which was a bit challenging but hopefully the construction will be completed by next year. A very nice display of 2015 Z06’s was on display under a tent in the display field along with a rolling chassis compliments of the Chevrolet Division of General Motors. Delaware Valley Chapter – 1981 (Year 4) By Club Historian Bob Cook    As I’m sure you have seen from the Summer 2014 Restorer magazine, NCRS is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2014.  The article on Chapters does clarify when the Delaware Valley Chapter was formed.  A “pilot” chapter in Florida was started in 1977, but the Delaware Valley Chapter was the first to get all paperwork approved on 2/24/1978 to become an official chapter.  So, which is the “first” chapter?  I guess it’s up to interpretation.      This is the fifth article in the series of the history of the Delaware Valley Chapter and focuses on Year 4, 1981.  Starting in 1981, the responsibility for editing or writing the newsletter was to be passed around.  Newsletter number 13, March, 1981, was assembled by the DelVal members from Delaware.  I wrote the introductory comments and Neil Blanchette penned an article on “Restoration Frame Bagging Technique”.      The June Newsletter was written by Chip Miller.  Chip lamented the fact that the pre‐68 Corvettes were not being driven very often – due to higher values and hard to find parts.  He said that his current favorite driver was his 1956.  He had only owned it about a year, but in that time he had driven it more than all of his other Corvettes put together. It was his favorite because it was driven – three parades in 1980 and three tank‐fulls of gas so far in 1981.  It was “super original” with under 60,000 miles, but not too nice to drive.

Chip reports that Keith Kibbe, chairman of the ’61‐‘62 judging forms committee, proposed making available an NCRS certification one step higher than top flight. Once a car had been awarded top flight status, the owner could request this special certification.  A limited number of cars would be judged for this honor at each national meet.  The judges would have to be truly expert and additional forms would be used.  This is obviously an idea that didn’t make it, but I suspect that this kind of thinking eventually led to the PV and Duntov, etc awards.      The August newsletter was prepared by Howard Dupee, Bill Loughery, and Don Lemek.  Howard announced that the Chapter was going to put on an NCRS‐judged show called “Run for the Ribbons”.  Due to the problems caused by the NCRS National Board concerning doing the 1980 show with CCDV (see June, 2014 newsletter), the 1981 show would be a Chapter event held at Bob Sloane Chevrolet on September 27.  A mass mailing was sent to all NCRS members within a 100 to 150 mile radius, and ads were run in Vette Vues magazine.      The December newsletter was edited/written by Reg Wirth and Leon Schlorff.  Newsletter names were nominated and voted on at the previous meeting.  Nominations included Classic Times, Fiber Class, Tappett Chatter, Fiberliner, and 300 plus.  “Classic Times” was chosen and so this was the first issue of the Classic Times newsletter.

In the December newsletter Leon Schlorff wrote the following review of the first “Run for the Ribbons”:    The first annual car show of the Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Corvette Restorers Society was held on Sunday, September 27, 1981 in the Sloane Chevrolet facility at Cottman and Algon Ave. in Northeast Philadelphia.      The general public was admitted to the show at 10:30 A.M. via the front door of the showroom. As they came strolling across the parking lot in the seventy degree warmth of this clear day, little did they realize how much work had been done previously by members of the club. Months of planning and negotiating, set‐up the night before the show and, set‐up from 5:30 A.M. on the day of the show along with all the related paper work went on “behind the scenes.”      Inside the showroom there were seven fine early models on display showing how the styles changed from 1954 to 1967. Also on display was one new Corvette fresh from the new plant at Bowling Green, Kentucky. As you turned toward the corridor one could see a colorful display of the official N.C.R.S. blue, red, and white flight award ribbons.      Having viewed the cars in the showroom, the Corvette enthusiast proceeded into the service area corridor where an eye catching display was seen.  Here, on N.C.R.S. signs, was neatly printed a brief history of the main features of each year car in the N.C.R.S. organization.  The long corridor held a row of beautiful cars.      The viewer then moved into the outdoor area where one was tempted by the “goodie” table with dozens of varieties of scrumptious coffee cakes and coffee.  Along‐side this table the Walker Jack raffle and N.C.R.S. information table was in operation.      The service area held two neatly parked rows of finely detailed and shining show cars.  A total of 37 cars were shown covering nearly every year recognized by N.C.R.S.  i.e. 1953 through 1967.      When one continued walking into the outdoor area, he found about a dozen flea market vendors displaying their wares of precious Corvette parts and Corvette‐related items. A hot dog stand was also open for business in this area to appease the hearty appetites.      As in the case of all well planned events, there are many people who contributed both time and labor to make this a terrific show.  I would like to give full credit to Howard Dupee and his show committee. I thank all the people who worked the show, all who showed cars, the wives and sweethearts who provided the delicious pastries at the coffee table and the Sloan organization for the use of the facility.   Leon Schlorff

2014 Bloomington Gold Great Hall Ceremony By: Tom Hoyer

In the February, 2014 Delaware Valley Chapter Newsletter we discussed the upcoming inductions of Irwin Kroiz (Corvette Collector) and The Bob Gold Auction (Bob Cook) into Bloomington Gold’s Great Hall.  This year was the final year of the Great Hall inductions (the final 10 cars and final 10 people and organizations).    The induction ceremony was held at the 2014 Bloomington Gold Show on Friday, June 27 at 4:00 pm.  The presentations were made by Bill Locke (Great Hall Chairman), David Burroughs (Great Hall Creator), and Guy Larsen (Bloomington Gold Owner).  The pictures show the medals and certificates being presented.

The “media session” for the Great Hall inductees was held on Saturday morning at 10:00 am.  Each of the inductees made a few comments about their accomplishments and contributions to the Corvette hobby.  Questions from the audience were fielded.

All of the Great Hall activities were well done and enjoyed by all the inductees as well as the folks attending the events.  I think each of the inductees thought that the induction into the Great Hall was a great honor and a highlight of his “Corvette Career”. Take a moment to congratulate Bob and Irwin when you see them.

Congratulations to Bob and Irwin on this very distinctive honor!    Interesting bit of information, the Great Hall has four (former and current) Delaware Valley Chapter members. MF Dobbins – inducted in Year 2; Chip Miller, inducted in Year 4; Irwin Kroiz and Bob Cook, inducted in Year 5. As far as I know, this is the most for any NCRS Chapter.

Valve Spring Shimming By: Tom Hoyer

The valve springs in your engine are there to keep the lifter in contact with the cam lobe throughout the normal operating RPM range of the engine. Too little pressure and the lifter will start to bounce on the cam leading to floating valves at higher RPM (valves that do not close as or when intended). Too much pressure and you run the risk of damage to the cam lobe.

When overhauling cylinder heads or installing a new cam it is always a good idea to check valve spring installed height as well as the spring pressure at the installed height as well as the open height. These specs are normally available from the spring manufacturer.  The goal is to shim the valves so that they all perform equally throughout the operating RPM range.

In my case I am rebuilding the engine for my 58 and have selected a Competition Cams camshaft that mimics the original cam that came in the engine in 1958. Along with the cam I am also using the recommended valve springs, retainers and locks.

Before installing the springs on the heads, I checked each spring pressure at the valve closed and valve open heights specified with the springs. In my case the closed pressure should be 92 lbs at 1.7” and the open pressure should be 230 lbs at 1.25”. To do this I used a simple spring pressure gauge. I used my bench vise to squeeze the spring to the dimensions (measured with caliper) specified . I did this for each spring and they were all within spec.

Next I moved on to checking and setting the installed height for each valve spring. The installed height of a valve spring is the total height of the spring when the valve is closed. This is measured from where the underside of the spring retainer to where it sit on the head.  All cams me with a recommended installed valve spring height; it is usually on the spec card included with the cam. In my case, the installed height is 1.700”.  Shown is a picture (from Comp Cams) showing what is meant by installed height and where the shims go to adjust the spring installed height.  What is not shown in this picture is the oil deflector that installs below the retainer on most small block Chevy’s. Spring shims are available from many of the aftermarket part suppliers. In my case I used a shim kit from Comp Cams.

Steps to set valve spring installed height:

1. Install the valve in the guide. 2. Install the valve spring micrometer

3. Install the retainer and valve locks.

4. Rotate the spring micrometer to take up the slack between it and the retainer.

5. Read the indicated height. In the picture shown, the distance between the head and the retainer is 1.775”.

Page 11: Delaware Valley NCRS Chapter Newsletter · Delaware Valley NCRS Chapter Newsletter ... Sunday, September 27, 1981 in the Sloane Chevrolet facility at Cottman and Algon Ave.rtheast

August 2014

 11

6. Subtract the specified installed height from the indicated height. This will be the amount of shim you need to install. Measured 1.775 – specified 1.700 = 0.075” of shim is required. The oil deflector is part of the final assembly, installed between the top of the spring and the retainer, and has a typical thickness of 0.030 to 0.035”. Subtract that from the 0.075” required and we need 0.045” of shim.

7. Removed the spring mic and install the correct amount of shims.

8. Reinstall the spring mic and verify that the distance measured is now with 0.020” of the recommended installed height.

9. If the installed height is not within 0.020", continue adding or subtracting shims is necessary. In the picture shown, I measure 1.730”. This is with the shims installed but NOT the oil deflector. Since the oil deflector is 0.030”, once that is installed as part of the assembly this spring will sit at 1.700”.

10. Remove spring mic and install the spring, oil deflector, retainer and locks. Using a valve spring compressor, compress the spring so the locks can be installed. Release the spring compressor and now you have a correctly shimmed valve spring!

11. Repeat this procedure for the rest of the valves.

Coil bind also needs to be checked and can be measured by compressing the spring to the height determined by the cam lobe lift x the rocker arm ratio (do this using a spring compressor. If you wait until you assemble the engine and they bind when you rotate the crank, you will damage the springs). The illustration above (from Comp Cams) shows the minimum coil clearance at maximum valve lift needs to be 0.060” or more for my springs. Check your specific spring specs for the minimum coil clearance.    Properly installed valve springs will provide increased valve train efficiency and minimize issues with valve float and wiped cam lobes. Take your time, do it right and you will have increased the reliability of your valve train.

Road Trip, Road Trip By Chapter Historian Bob Cook    It was Tuesday, July 8 at 9:30 am as we pulled into the McDonald’s at Gap, PA in our 2002 Z06.  We got a quick Sausage McMuffin and saw Ed and Theresa Baldwin across the road waiting in an old Pizza Shop’s parking area.  The Mid‐Atlantic road tour, led by Steve Gansky, had left the Marriott King of Prussia at 9:00 am, heading out for the first leg of the trip to the NCRS National Convention in Kansas City, Kansas.  The Baldwin’s and we were meeting them en‐route on Route 30 in Gap, PA.  Pretty much exactly on time, the rest of the tour came by at 9:40 am and Ed and I pulled into the middle of a line of about 7 Corvettes.      The five‐day Road Tour was pre‐planned by Steve and we had each received a detailed schedule, route instructions, and maps in a booklet form.  Each day had several stops/tours, all the while getting closer to KC.  Let me just say that Steve did a great job in planning the trip with a lot of interesting stops – and his leadership of the Corvette caravan got us where we needed to be, more or less when we needed to be there.  Communication was by “walkie‐talkie” radios and between leader Steve and Frank Stech, who drove the sweep (last) car, we did a good job of staying together on back roads as well as on Interstates.  Road tour participants included Steve & Janice Gansky, Bob & Carol Fox, Linda and myself, Frank & Barbara Stech, Phil & Carole Barbaro, Mark Rudnick & Charlie Busnack, Ed & Theresa Baldwin, Dick & Roberta Robinson, Al & Allan Luketic (joined later) and Bob & Sandi Aue (joined later).  I believe a couple of other DelVal Chapter members went with other road tours.    In order to keep this relatively short, I will let the following pictures “tell the story”.

Member Profile – Bill Hyndman    My name is Bill Hyndman and I live in Pineville, PA.  I grew up in my dad's Corvette filled garage in Abington.  After his first ’62 Corvette, my dad bought only Fuel Injected Corvettes; 7 more over the years.  He took me to my first Carlisle in 1976 when I was seven and I have great memories walking the fairgrounds looking for beer cans and baseball cards. Almost 40 years later, Corvettes at Carlisle is one of my favorite weekends of the year.    I had a hiatus from Corvettes when I went to college at the University of Richmond and played competitive golf and then while I served in the Army for a 12 year span.  I was a UH‐60 Blackhawk helicopter pilot and served in Germany, Kosovo, Panama and in the 82 Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC.       When I returned back home in 1999, my Corvette passion was rekindled. I rejoined my dad in our love for Corvettes and spent a lot of time with him as a result. We bought a '68 and worked on it together tirelessly.  We attended more Carlisle’s and Bloomington’s and were together more than if a Corvette was not involved.     I worked for Comcast for 8 years as the Area General Manager for the Philadelphia Cable TV operation and then with the Brickman Commercial Landscaping Group as their Philadelphia Regional Manager.  I recently took a leap of faith to start Patriot Connections (www.patriotconnections.us) which is a veteran recruiting company to help military service members make the transition into the business world with companies who want to leverage their talents.      The Corvettes I own are: 1962 Big Brake Fuel Injected (Duntov), 1965 Fuel Injected Convertible (Duntov), 1968 L89 Convertible and a 2006 Z06.      My dad passed away two years ago but I am very happy to be passing the torch on to my two young boys with their introduction to Corvettes.  We all share many of the same Craftsman tools my dad and I have used for over 40 years which brings back many good memories.  I was happy to finish the ’68 in my dad’s honor after eight years of labor, frustration and enjoyment.  I have started it through the NCRS judging process (2 Chapter Top Flights and a forthcoming Regional).  My hope for NCRS and its members is to help attract additional younger people so that our love for Corvettes can be appreciated for many years.

Editor’s Comments By Tom Hoyer

I want to thank all of the contributors for the Augus issue of the newsletter, including (but not limited to); Bob Cook, Steve Gansky and Bill Hyndman. Member contributions are what help make “our” newsletter interesting and fun to read (not to mention it makes my job easier….). Keep those member profiles coming!    I NEED technical articles for the next newsletter. We need to put together at least TWO more technical articles to meet the requirements for Chapter Top Flight in 2014. Let’s get wrenching and take some pictures!    As always, please feel free to contact me to discuss anything about the newsletter. I’m always open to new ideas or critiques (yes, I do make unintentional errors…………)

Newsletters Needed By Bob Cook    The best way to retrieve our Chapter’s history is through the quarterly newsletters that have been sent to members since July of 1978.  Unfortunately, we have not been able to find some of the newsletters.   If you have any of the following issues, please bring them to the August (or any other) meeting.  I will copy them and get the originals back to you.  Missing issues:

Sept or Oct, 1978 – Newsletter  Issue #2

Late 1986, all of 1987 and 1988

All of 1991 through early 2000  Also, if you have pictures or other memorabilia from “old” events, please let me make copies.  Please note the event, date and the people in the pictures (if you know any of these).
