Singers Come out and join the Singers as they rehearse and prepare their spring programs! They will travel to the Cannstatter in Philadelphia on Sunday, March 1 to join other choruses in a Liederabend of song and fellowship. The bus will leave the DSB at 2:00p.m. and return by 9:00p.m. There may be extra bus seats for interested members so check with Dr. Fritts for availability.

The Delaware Saengerbund’s 167th Stiftungsfest (Anniversary) will be held on Saturday, March 21 at 7:30p.m. All members are encouraged to join in the celebration of our club as the oldest continuing ethnic club in Delaware. The Singers (Saenger) are preparing a special program and invite you to come and enjoy their voices in song.

A quote about songs by a Netsilik Eskimo named Orpingalik offers an interesting perspective: “Songs are thoughts sung out with the breath when people are moved by great forces and ordinary speech no longer suffices”. If you enjoy singing, join the chorus on Wednesday evenings at 7:30p.m.

Ladies of the D.S.B.

The Ladies will be doing Friday night food on February 28th, the first Friday of Lent. The menu will be grilled cheese, soup and dessert. We will also be serving food at Stiftungsfest on March 21st. Please come out and support the Ladies for these 2 events.

The Ladies are planning their annual trip on Wednesday April 29th. Destination will be a stop at Kitchen Kettle shops in Intercourse PA, then on to Dutch Apple Dinner Theater for lunch and a show, Guys and Dolls and our final stop on the way home will be for wine tasting at Britain Hill Winery in Quarryville. Please see Ann Schmalbach, AnnMarie Blaasch or Judy Ariganello for more details if you are interested in joining us.

If you would like to find out some more about the Ladies and what we do in the kitchen, you can volunteer to help out at one of the General Meetings. Men are welcome to help too. If you would like to help us, please see AnnMarie Blaasch or Judy Ariganello. Also, we always welcome new members so come to one of our monthly meetings. Our next meeting is Monday March 30th at 7:30 pm in the VSR. April meeting will be on April 27th.

Judy Ariganello, President - Ladies of the DSB

Enzian Volkstanzgruppe

Thank you to all of you who attended the Sweethearts Dinner on February 16th!

Join us on Thursday nights for both Children and Adults’ practice.

Children begin rehearsing at 7:30 PM and the Adults begin at 8:30 PM.

Germanic Genealogy Group

Meetings of the Genealogy Group take place on Sunday afternoons in the von Steuben Room. They will begin at 3:15 pm. Meetings are open to all members. We invite you to attend our programs. March 15, Sunday 3:15 pm - Lloyd Maier will share efforts to connect with a Genealogy Group in Germany. The idea is to create a relationship where information can be exchanged to the benefit of both groups. April 19, Sunday 3:15 pm – We will look at Emigrant documentations – both exit and entrance paper required – considering all import sites in USA and export sites in Europe. There is no leader. Come and share what knowledge you have of your family and their travels to be in America. We also invite you to tell of and perhaps show items that your immigrants took the trouble to bring with them, and that still are treasured by the family.

Celebrating 30 years of Reunification of Germany

Deutschland: Bundesländer Germany's 16 Federal States

October 2020 celebrates the 30th anniversery of the Reunification of Germany. Most of Germany's 16 Bundesländer (states) are relatively new creations, formed after 1945, and then reformed with some alterations at the time of the reunification.

Saarland – The smallest of the Bundesländer in Germany. It borders Luxembourg and France. It was actually under French control after WWII until 1957.

Culture Committee

Kutztown Folk Festival—Yoder’s Bus Trip The Kutztown Folk Festival is a 9-day event and we’re going to be visiting it on its first day, Saturday, June 27th. We’ll leave DSB’s parking lot at 8:00 a.m. via a Wertz Motor Coach arriving in Kutztown a little after 10:00 a.m., rain or shine. We’ll be there for almost 3 hours checking out their quilts and other handmade items, the entertainment, the food, and listening to their Pennsylvania Dutch dialect, actually a mix of English-Deutsch language. Then we’ll hop back on our air-conditioned bus at 1:00 p.m. and head towards Yoder’s in New Holland, PA, at about 2:00 p.m. for either a delicious smorgasbord all you can eat lunch or an a la carte menu selection. Once you’ve finished eating, instead of sitting around, you might want walk off lunch and visit their country store. We’ll leave Yoder’s Restaurant & Buffet at about 3:45 p.m. and arrive at DSB by 5:00 p.m. The DSB-subsidized trip includes the bus trip and admission to the Kutztown Festival for $10 per member. Non-members are $15. Food is at your own expense, including at Yoder’s. Due to the very reasonable pricing of this trip, we expect seats to sell out quickly. To reserve your seat(s), please call Don Thureau on his cellphone at (302) 897-4568. If no answer, please leave a voicemail message with your name, phone number and number of seats. Don will call you back to confirm the reservation. Payment will be requested as you board the bus. For expediency purposes, cash only, and please have exact change for this trip. Your $10 (or $15) per seat will be your admission on the bus. Please be on time. If you need to cancel your reservation, please let Don know ASAP since we will likely have a waiting list. If you do not cancel and are a “no-show,” you will be asked to send a check payable to DSB, and mailed to the DSB, to the attention of the Culture Committee. Thank you for your understanding.

This trip is organized by the Delaware Saengerbund’s

Culture Committee and sanctioned by the Board of Directors
