Discover your Lifestyle with Annalise

It’s officially July!

We’ve got a great month ahead of us here at DWO.

A big thank you to everyone who completed the Lifestyle Survey and provided constructive suggestions for

the Lifestyle Department. A total of 379 residents participated (more than ever before!), and it’s very much

appreciated. We work hard every day to provide programs and opportunities that promote a successful and

active lifestyle exclusively for you, and your feedback is invaluable. Currently we are diving into the Lifestyle Survey results

and will be presenting them within the next few months.

Coming this month to Del Webb Orlando we have New Orleans Blues Night (July

14th). Join us for a night of sweet blues music and astounding close-up magic

brought to you by John Ace. Tailgaters are holding two events in July, a 4th of July BBQ (July

4th) and a Parents Day BBQ (July 22nd), so keep an eye out for registration notices, menus

and more! Monsta Lobsta food truck is bringing their tasty lobster rolls back to DWO and will

be accompanied by a Sunday screening of Jaws (July 8th).

Looking ahead, Fall entertainment is lining up. Resident recommended, and world-famous hypnotist

Richard Barker will be joining us. Jimi Pappas is coming back, this time to perform solo by the firepit.

Oktoberfest is set and a group with a new take on Carole King’s music will be following not far behind.

Entertainment Series announcements regarding packages and specific entertainment dates will be

coming to you soon!

Clubs are growing and organizing! The Shalom Club Break the Fast, Patriot’s

Ball and Diwali celebrations are all in the works!

Thank you to everyone who welcomed me back! The time away was much needed. Going overseas really

helped me take a step back and breathe for a moment while wandering around Amsterdam and Paris. Now

that I’m back, I feel awake, energetic and ready to keep moving forward!

Here’s to a great second half of the year! Cheers Del Webbers!

Fun Facts About Jaws

• The shark doesn’t fully appear in a shot until one hour and 21 minutes into the two-hour film. The reason it isn’t shown is because the mechanical shark that was built rarely worked during filming, so Spielberg had to create inventive ways (like Quint’s yellow barrels) to shoot around the non-functional shark.

• Brody’s famous “You’re gonna need a bigger boat” line was entirely improvised by Scheider on the day of shooting.

• 43 years ago this summer, people lined up around the block and around the world to get scared silly by "Jaws," widely seen as the first summer blockbuster.

Fun Facts About the Blues

• The blues grew up in the Mississippi Delta just upriver from New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz. Blues and jazz have always influenced each other, and they still interact in countless ways today.

• Unlike jazz, the blues didn't spread out significantly from the South to the Midwest until the 1930s and '40s. Once the Delta blues made their way up the Mississippi to urban areas, the music evolved into elec-trified Chicago blues, other regional blues styles, and various jazz-blues hybrids. A decade or so later the blues gave birth to rhythm 'n blues and rock 'n roll.

CommUNITY Matters with Kelly

Hello Del Webbers

This Month’s article is titled “Did You Know”?

Since I have been your Community Manager for the last six months my

primary responsibility is that we all abide by our Covenants. I wanted to

take this opportunity to remind our owners that everyone is responsible

for abiding by our Covenants. Please review and reach out to me with

any questions as I am sending out letters to those who are in violation.

• Did you know that a Certificate of Residency must be completed

prior to going to a Purchase Contract? We are required by law to keep record of all occupant(s) ages to comply with being a 55+ Community.

• Do you have an American Flag on a standalone Flag Pole in your

Lawn? Did you know you are required by County Ordinance (per our documents) to have it lit at night?

• Do you know Water features or Fountains are not permitted in the front Lawn? These must be

placed in the back yard/screened enclosure.

• Do you have “rock” in your landscape beds? Did you know you are not permitted to have

white, or black and white speckled rock? The only color rock permitted is earth tone and the stone must be ¾’ – 1 ½” in diameter. Anything other than Natural Stone is in violation.

• Did you know that you are only allowed a total of three items in your front lawn? Many of our

owners have several rocks, flower pots, figurines. All but 3 need to be removed. Additionally, did you know that your figurines cannot be taller than three feet?

• Did you know the small 12” decorative flags you purchase at Michaels or Hobby Lobby that

you place on your front lawn are not allowed? Those need to be removed and placed in your back lawn.

• Did you know that no flag or banner may be displayed in your front lawn?

• Did you know that your Garbage and Recycling Containers are to be stored in your Garage

and not on the side of your home?

• Did you know that a For-Sale Sign must be Blue and White 18” X 24” mounted on a black

steel push frame no more than 32 inches in height? Only 1 For- Sale sign is permitted.

• Is your lawn lush and green? Did you know that per the Design Guidelines you are required to

apply fertilizer and pest control at a minimum of 4 times a year?

• Did you know there is NO overnight street Parking?

• Did you know before you do anything to the exterior of your home you must secure an ARC

Application for review and Approval prior to moving forward? Thank you in advance for your cooperation and correction.

Be well, be you, be Del Webb.

Notes from the Board

Hello Del Webbers, Our Del Webb Orlando Community continues to grow at the same fast pace as last year. The two new sections near the back gate are almost complete and the last section has begun to sell home sites. The last section, referred to as Village 14, will have a total of 171 lots for sale, bringing our grand total in at 940 homes. Based on this information and the Pulte

rate of sale during the last rolling year, total build out will occur in two and a half years. Currently the HOA Board of Directors is composed of seven (7) Directors. The seven (7) Directors include five (5) Pulte employees and two (2) Resident Homeowner Directors. After discussions with Angel Alfonso, HOA President, the intent is to reduce the Pulte number of Directors by one and add another Resident Director no later than May of 2019. The next HOA Board of Directors meet-ing is scheduled for Monday September 10th at 5:30 PM. In an ongoing process that has taken over a year to complete, the ARC has reworked the Design Guidelines to bring them up to date from the 2013 version. Look for Board approval of the 2018 Guidelines after a review pro-cess. The ARC is also currently working on an additional option for the screening of ancillary equipment around the perimeter of our neighborhood homes. The ARC normally meets twice a month on a Wednesday morning at the club-house. On the Friday before the meeting an agenda is available at the clubhouse on the community bulletin board. The Communications Advisory Community is currently involved in a project for the HOA Board to help clarify the frequency and messaging of emails. The CAC has reached out to several community members in addition to its membership to provide additional information and guidance. Currently the CAC is searching for an additional member and an alternate. The committee meets once a month. The Fines and Suspension Committee was formed and the members are Don Carey, Chair, Ron Davis and Don Jennings. This committee is currently searching for an alter-nate member. The Chartered Club Advisory Committee continues to grow by adding additional clubs to its number. Currently at more that 50 clubs it offers our homeowners a wonderful choice of group activities. The leadership of this important committee has accomplished much and in an effort to continue its commitment to providing outstanding direction and service, it is asking for new members to volunteer to help manage the club process. In closing to all those volunteers who through donating their time and energy make our community a better place to live and enjoy life, “THANK YOU.” Sincerely, Jeff Neely, Resident HOA Director

Hi Everyone! Greetings from Michigan where it’s not (quite) as warm as what you have down there. I wanted to send a short note this month to let you know that even though I’m in the north coun-try, I’m still working for all of you on a daily basis, hopefully, to make sure that our community runs smoothly – not always perfect, but as smooth as possible. Here are some quick thoughts on what is going with the stuff that I work on:

We are starting the initial process of developing the 2019 Operating Budget with the Financial Review Committee (FRC). Basically, we’ve started to gather data on things like vendor contracts, management funding requirements, etc. – all the stuff that we need to develop a comprehensive budget. As many of you may know, the Safety Advisory Committee (SAC) has proposed a number of items related to safety in the community. Their most important item on the list right now, to help mitigate unsafe driving, is center striping all of Del Webb Blvd from the Ridgewood Lake Blvd to the back gate, including signage in various places. The BOD has approved that item and bids are in process. Hopefully we can get it done this year. Regarding the Tavern and the LTTC, traffic in the tavern has slowed down for a couple of months but they are still showing an overall profit for the year to date versus their objec-tive of break-even; despite the fact that they’ve had a few “bumps” in the road like freezer malfunctions resulting in some food spoilage. The Technology Advisory Committee (TAC) continues to try to improve the many facets of the electronic related things throughout the clubhouse. In my opinion, those guys have done some really good work in their short existence and will continue to do so. One last note; I will be back down to DWO for two weeks from July 25 to August 8 to work on community related matters. If you would like to talk about anything face to face, I can be available then. That’s it for this month. As I always end this, I’m al-ways available at any time to discuss any issues or questions that you may have. Sincerely, Paul Frison – Resident Director

Architectural Review

Committee (ARC) Generators – Why the controversy?

Your neighbors who serve on the ARC would like to

thank everyone who took the time to review the proposed

2018 Draft Design Guidelines and, especially, anyone who

then submitted a Feedback Form. Over the next few weeks,

we will review all the comments, give them due consideration,

and organize them by the categories on the Feedback Form.

Since some of our Committee will be on vacation on

and off for the next few weeks, we anticipate holding an open

meeting to present the results of the comments to the entire

community in late July with the hope of submitting the final

draft to the Board of Directors for review sometime in August.

This has been a year-long project, partially because

of personnel changes in the membership of the ARC and

partially because it has been five years since the current

Guidelines were formulated. The changes suggested are

intended to eliminate inconsistencies from the 2013 Design

Guidelines and to clarify what each homeowner needs to do

in order to maintain our community-wide standards and prop-

erty values here at Del Webb Orlando. Again, thank you for

your input.

Communication Advisory

Committee

The Communications Advisory Committee continues to meet at least monthly to review the many communication tools used here at DWO.

Unfortunately we have lost two key members of the committee--Alice Kalamar and Suzanne Gray--we will miss them greatly going forward!

George Vamos and I are actively considering a new committee member and an alternate.

Our current project as assigned by the Board, in conjunction with an Ad Hoc Committee, is to provide pro-posed guidelines to Board for email blast procedures.

More to come very soon.

Have a jubilant July!

Ken Lindberg

CAC Chairman

La Tapenade Tavern

Committee (LTTC)

Despite the absence of many residents due to extend-ed travelling and longer vacations the Tavern has still seen a steady stream of regulars enjoying everything that is on of-fer. Unfortunately we have had to close on a few occasions due to volunteer availability but the enthusiasm of the volunteers remains strong and we have only closed when it has been abso-lutely unavoidable. We are always looking for new recruits to step up and see whether volunteering is for them. We regularly run open meetings for new or seasoned residents to stop by and see what volunteering entails so look out for the community emails detailing the event. It really is a fun and rewarding place to spend a couple of hours a month serving your fellow resi-dents….and you will meet new friends too!

We have made several changes to the food and bever-

age on offer. Due to feedback and slow sales we have removed some of the less popular items and added a couple of new items. We now have mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce and also a big variety of ice cream to cool you down in the summer heat. We are selling beer by the pitcher, wine by the bottle and we also now have prosecco. If anyone has any suggestions to enhance our offering then please use the suggestions box in the Tavern. We think that what we offer is about right now but we are always open to change based on your needs. Events for this month are 7/5 Chicken Wing Special, 7/12 Frozen Daiquiri Special, 7/18 Hot Dog Special and 7/26-27 Frozen Margarita Special. For those of you who volunteer our social event will be on 7/10 at 5pm in the Tavern. By popular demand we have de-cided to make every Friday night a karaoke night – it’s always popular, always busy and mostly in tune so we will keep running that night as the default event unless there is another specific event being run. Any suggestions for other events or theme nights that you would like to see are always welcome.

Last month we welcomed Corey Jimenez to the club-

house staff. Most of her time will be spent at the Tavern ensur-ing its smooth running which will take some of the pressure off of the volunteers. At this time of limited volunteer availability her contribution will be invaluable in ensuring that the Tavern re-mains open. The Tavern committee has also expanded to in-clude four new members, all of whom are very active volunteers; Sharon Conti, Bruce Hill, Dee Northrup and Val Nassar. We have also had 10 new volunteers sign up since May and they are busy shadowing more experienced volunteers until they feel confident to volunteer on their own. So many new faces around at the Tavern and we appreciate your patience while they settle in. With summer in full swing there’s a lot on offer at the Tavern to keep you cool. If you’re around the pool then why not fill up with some buckets of beer, sodas, ice cream or take-out food? In the evenings stop by for a social catch up with your neighbors, play TapTV Trivia or serenade your fellow residents with a song or two. As ever, it’s our Tavern, run by us and run for us and we thank you for your continued support.

This is for all the History Buffs in Del Webb! Interesting events in the month of July in

America or involving an American!

• July 4th, 1776: The Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental

Congress.

• July 1st, 1862: Abraham Lincoln signed the first income tax bill. (Thank you, Florida,

for no state income tax!)

• July 8th, 1889: The Wall Street Journal is first published.

• July 16th, 1945: The experimental Atomic Bomb “Fat Boy” was set off in the desert

in New Mexico. The bomb emitted heat three times the temperature of the interior

of the sun and wiped out plant and animal life within a mile radius.

• July 28th, 1956: Elvis Presley scored his second No. 1 hit with “I Want You, I Need

You, I Love You.”

• July 4th, 1960: The 50th star was added to the American flag to represent to new

state of Hawaii.

• July 2nd, 1964: President Lyndon B. Johnson signs The Civil Rights Act of 1964.

This was a landmark civil rights and labor law that outlawed discrimination based

on race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

• July 20th, 1969: American astronaut Neil Armstrong took the first steps on the

moon. It is estimated that over 530 million people tuned in for this event.

tennis player, Andre Agassi, to win his 6th Wimbledon title in seven years.

• July 24th, 2005: Lance Armstrong won his 7th Tour De France.

Sales Blitz We are happy to report that we have sold our first home in Village 14. We have been focusing on finishing up our current phases between the clubhouse and the south gate and are close to being filled up with only four lots remaining to build a personal home. Recently Pulte Homes began offering Builder Choice homes, which are homes that are permitted and ready to start construc-tion once you choose an interior personal color palette. We have three classics and two garden Builder Choice homes. The ad-vantage of these homes is they will be ready to move into more quickly since we have the permits. These are great alternatives for those wanting to choose their cabinets and flooring colors and prefer to move into their home in three months. We have two new Martin Ray inventory homes ready to move into with designer finishes and built-in appliances-- one featuring an enlarged lanai and one a sunroom. Both homes are extremely impressive! A shout out to Pat and Artie Tergesen for their referral! Our sales team appreciates your referrals. Remember, if you refer a friend or family member and they purchase a new home, you will receive a referral check in the amount of $250.00 to the club of your choice. Thankful every day, Diane Armstrong

Recipleasers

If I Only Knew! If I knew how simpler life was when I was younger, I wouldn’t be in a rush to grow up! How delicious food tasted! I ate eggs, ba-con, fast food, meat, chicken, ice cream, muffins, cookies, cakes, chocolate and drank whole milk. But then I learned that some of these foods were bad for you, so I tried to change to “healthy foods. Now I find that foods which were once considered un-healthy are not so bad for you after all. Since meat was declared “bad” for you, I turned to fish. But some fish have mercury that may harm you. Then what about becom-ing a vegetarian and eating mostly fruits and vegetables? Many fruits contain a high amount of sugar. Moreover, what about ferti-lizers and other additives used in planting crops? What foods are good for us? Luckily scientists and researchers are solving this problem for us. Consider these new findings about food: 1. Eggs Once thought to clog arteries that could cause heart attacks and strokes, eggs are now on top of the “good” list. One egg con-tains. 2, Chocolate Good news for chocolate lovers! Studies have shown that dark chocolate 3. Pork (bacon also) For years pork was considered unhealthy for us. Not now! Using boneless loin chops, pork loin roast, tenderloin and center cut bacon is superior to chicken as a source of complete protein. A trimmed pork tenderloin is just as lean as a skinless chicken breast and has less fat and calories. Pork is also a good source of vitamin B. 4. Dairy Dairy, including milk, butter, yogurt and cheese, was listed as unhealthy. Life styles changed and so did the definition of un-healthy food. Dairy products have a high content of protein and calcium. It is recommended that young children drink whole milk to help aid their development. However, dairy products are high in saturated fats. It is okay to have dairy as long as the other daily food choices are lower in saturated fat. Now I know. Food choices may seem confusing. But the secret to healthy eating is to enjoy all foods in moderation. The theme for Recipleasers July tasting dinner is Healthy Hearts. Pottery Club The Pottery Club is open to all residents of Del Webb who enjoy playing in mud and clay and being creative. How do you join? Just stop by the craft room any Friday from 1—4pm and talk to any one of our members to get started. We have over 200 molds ranging from vases, sea shells, mugs, soap dishes, night lights, animals such as turtles, dogs, cats, frogs, rabbits, cows, fish, owls, a piggy bank and so many more. We also have many holiday molds for Halloween, Christ-mas and Easter. If you prefer to create your own pottery masterpiece we have blocks of clay in white and terra cotta. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination

Our club dues are a single $25.00 initial life time payment and $10.00 a quarter for replacement of supplies such as clay, slip, glazes and tools. The Future of the Pottery Club is Looking Very Exciting. We have been raising funds to partner with Pulte to build a Kiln Room in or near the club house. For the past 4 years all the firing has been done in the garage of the club’s found-er. Thank you, Pulte, we are looking forward to having the convenience of a kiln right in our club house! Our

next project will be buying a new kiln that can fire both clay and glass. Stop by the Pottery window display at the club house to see pieces that were created by our members. This month's theme is "shells."

Vets4Vets The Vets 4 Vets Club will sponsor the Patriots Ball on the 13th of October 2018. The Ball is a community event and is meant to honor our First Responders and Veterans for their service to the country and their community. This year, the event will be catered by Maggiano’s Italian restaurant out of Orlando and they will be serving fish, chicken, and beef dishes and you can choose your favorite dish. Additionally, we are planning on an open bar; a strolling violinist for entertainment during the cocktail hour; and appetizers. The Guest of Honor is to be determined, but we plan on having our same DJ back that we all enjoyed so much last year. Those that attended last year had a great time and we want to make this Patriot’s Ball even better. We will have a slight reduction in ticket prices this year (estimated at $44.00). We will begin selling tick-ets in September and we will have a table set up in the Lobby (watch for announcements) so you and your friends can pick your table. This is Ball is open to the entire community at Del Webb and you do not have to be a First responder or a Veteran to attend. Please come join us! For further information, please contact Bill Spencer at [email protected] or at 540-717-0195.

The Freedom of the Open Road It’s July, smack in the middle of summer. When I think of July, I think of Independence Day

and Freedom– a day we commemorate our freedom from the British rule by King George III. A day in

modern history we think of as a day in the park, picnics, barbeque and parades. I guess that’s how July

was chosen for National Picnic month. But I also think of freedom as in summer vacation. Or maybe

the freedom of the open road. I’m a firm believer in the national pastime of the “Road Trip”.

I’m an adventurer, I think maybe I was born that way. My grandparents traveled, some across

continents and oceans. My parents traveled. My mother traveled the world., Russia, China, Machu

Picchu. As kids we piled into the car and took off. My dad took us for the “Sunday drive”. The six of us

filled the powder blue Cadillac nearly every Sunday, depending on the season was how the folks deter-

mined where we were headed. In summer, it could have been the Jersey Shore, where we discovered

the creepy, prehistoric dinosaur-age horseshoe crab, or New York City to visit all the grandparents and

eat Chinese food in Chinatown. Each of us kids was the navigator at some point, it was how I learned to read a map.

When my father’s parents moved to Miami Beach, we drove there to visit, with the “must-see” stop at the South of the

Border tourist trap. (We saw the signs for at least 10 thousand miles!) I have been to the top of the Eastern Seaboard. Mom took us,

two of my brothers and me on a road trip north, all the way to Maine and Acadia. We ate lobsters straight from the fishing vessels

and toured a fish cannery.

As kids, when my uncle was getting married in Denver, we piled in the car pulling a pop-up camper and drove from

Connecticut to Colorado with his brother following on a motorcycle. As an adult, we drove down to Key West. Driving south through

Alligator Alley, seeing the real native Florida and walking beaches made of crushed shells not sand. I have driven the Pacific Coast

Highway from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

The last real road trip I took was probably the best. I pulled out the atlas and looked at the maps. I then jumped on a plane

and met my traveling companion in St. Louis. We had no real

plans just that we were driving Route 66, the Mother Road,

the ultimate Road Trip! We went to the Arch, an amazing feat

of architecture and engineering, looking over the Mighty

Mississippi, the Big Muddy. We also visited the Confluence of

the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. I taught myself to play

piano by learning Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer”, so imagine

my excitement of visiting his St. Louis home with his piano.

We drove Route 66 through Illinois, Missouri,

Kansas, and Oklahoma stopping to see the world’s second

largest rocking chair, a natural forest filled with ancient pine

trees, the town of Eureka, a civil war museum, the remains of

vintage buildings from an earlier era, state parks, Devil’s Den,

and vistas of wheat fields. We stopped where and when we

wanted. In Kansas we had the best barbeque cooked by a

man with leathered skin and served by a woman with the tallest beehive.

Once we hit Tulsa, we turned back eastward and traveled through the

top of Arkansas. In Broken Arrow we met a chocolatier from Belgium,

spent time at Terra Studios, an art colony and home of the Blue Bird of

Happiness glass figures. We spent the night in a state park called Devil’s

Den with the largest

bat colony. At night

we sat outside for

hours watching the

fireflies and stars.

I hated that this trip had to end but I had to go back to work and my companion had to get to Idaho. The road helps you embrace the unexpected, renews your faith in the world and broadens your mind. As Helen Keller said, “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” So hit the road and enjoy the freedom.
