The building of the Tipner Park and Ride facility in Portsmouth was the first stage ofPortsmouth Council’s redevelopment of the Tipner area and formed part of a muchlarger urban regeneration project in the city which included the redevelopment of Cosham and the surrounding area (see Northern Road Bridge and Cosham High Street Case Studies). The Council goal was to make the area:
‘…an even nicer place to live, shop and visit.’
Being a park and ride facility the Council demanded a hard wearing yet aestheticallypleasing surface which could meet the high traffic requirements for years to come.
This project proceeded very smoothly without any major challenges. The main reason behindthis was the good relationship that DekorGrip had built up with the Council and contractors during the previous two projects. The approachability and readiness to answer technicalquestions and general enquiries is a key part of the reason why DekorGrip is such a success.
The constant communication and feedback to the council meant that the project was deliveredon time and to the high standards required.

THE REQUIREMENTS
THE SOLUTION
For many visitors, the park and ride facility would be the first thing that they sawwhen entering the city and so it needed to stand out and make a good impression.With this in mind, along with the fact the area would be heavily trafficked, a hardwearing aggregate blend was specified by the Council. They chose DekorGrip’sNatural Wicker blend at a depth of 18mm.
With the park and ride facility expected to see heavy use, the maintenance and, inparticular, cleaning of the facility was of utmost importance to the Council who wanted to make sure that the facility remained an attractive city asset for years to come. DekorGrip were able to help set their minds at ease by highlighting the benefits of the DekorClean product – a surface cleaner designed especially for resin based surfaces.
The use of DekorGrip provides a contrasting finish to the design of the park and ridefacility and is used in a mixture of high trafficked and decorative areas of differing size,to create an eye catching finish.
The idea to use DekorBound to demarcate the pedestrian areas within the park and ride was not planned from the start but evolved as the project took shape and as the council, contractors and DekorGrip team worked together on the installation. By using a clear colour system of red surfaces for buses, black for cars and Natural Wicker for pedestrians a system developed which made safety and access rights easier to see and understand by all users of the facility.
DekorGrip were able to reassure the Council about their concerns regarding the ongoing maintenance and cleaning of the surfaces and the finished location really is an asset to the city.
