Course planning recommendations
● 12 units is considered to be full-time status (typically 3 courses).
○ Each course is typically 4.0 units.
● When coming to a university on the quarter system, keep in mind…
○ the pace will most likely be much faster than the institution you’re coming from - try your best
to stay on top of studying and assignments!
○ the course structure may be different - many classes at UCSD only have 1 midterm and 1
final contributing to your final grade, which can make it more difficult to make up any points
lost
○ you will most likely need to increase your study time
○ UCSD will be a completely new environment and culture that may take some getting used
to, don’t overdo it the first quarter
What is the difference between upper and lower division courses?
● Lower division courses are numbered 1-99.
● Upper division courses are numbered 100-199.
Students must have at least junior standing (90.0 + units) to enroll in upper division courses.
If you would like to request pre-authorization to enroll in upper division courses prior to being junior standing you can submit a request at:
easy.ucsd.edu
