    DRAMATIC STRUCTURE

    Structure refers to the totalorganization of a literary work

    Classical tragic structure consists of:

    climax/turning point

    rising action falling action

    catastrophe

    RISING ACTION

    It is entire the first part of the play inwhich the forces creating conflict.

    It usually carries the hero through atseries of events which enlarge andintensify his conflict

    The rising action usually consists of

    incident in pairs, move andcountermove. The countermove producethe next move.

    CLIMAX / TURNING POINT

    This the end of rising action for it is amajor point in the play

    The other term for climax is turningpoint. Sometimes it is preceded bycrisis, which make the direction of theturn final.

    FALLING ACTION

    It follows climax and usually presentthe ways which the hero is slowly

    overpowered and becomes increasinglyhelpless

    CATASTROPHE

    It is the main action of the play and it isoften a death, usually the death of the

    hero (male) or heroine (female), or both

    EXPOSITION / PRELIMINARY SITUATION It is important for the reader to grasp (memahami) the

    initial situation to be to go on with the play

    It includes: who are those people? Where are they? When

    is it? Who is speaking to whom and about what? THE INCITING ACTION OR EXCITING FORCE OR

    CHALLENGE It is the first part of exposition and it is dynamic

    It contains a challenge, threat (ancaman) or danger to thecondition of the protagonist

    They confront the main characters or protagonist with asituation that he will not accept without resistance

    PLOT

    THE RISING ACTION It sometimes called the compilation

    It ties the preliminary situation into a knot

    It consists of actions taken by protagonist and by the forcesagainst him

    THE CLIMAX OR TURNING POINT It is the event that determine how the conflict will end

    favorable (baik) or unfavorable (tidak baik) for theprotagonist

    THE DENOUNMENT/RESOLUTION/CATASTROPHE It present the outcome, dispose of subplots and gives a

    glimpse of a new, stable situation

    CHARACTERS

    The main character in a plot is calledprotagonist and the opponent is called

    antagonist Active and Passive Character

    Active : they perform act, they havelarge parts in the play, they are dynamic

    Passive : they acted upon by the eventsof play, it is usually static or unchanging
