Nature of the First World War
Limited War:War which involves fighting only between
professional armies on a clearly defined battlefield Minimal effect on civilian populations of both sides
Total War:Any and all strategies, tactics, and weapons are
used to defeat the enemyNation organizes itself economically and politically
in support of the war effortCivilians are intentionally targeted in order to
break the will of the enemyTotal war was facilitated in early 20th century due
to the development of more destructive technology
Limited v. Total War
Strategy: Relating to the higher conduct and war aims of a war.
Tactics: Short term, everyday matters like maneuvering in the presence of an enemy, avoiding defeat and taking a defended position
