I have been a part of Sagentia for 2 years now. In that time I’ve helped design game changing medical devices, build fully functional prototypes, deliver test results to clients, coordinate multinational companies and organise a bike ride or two. Great work, great people, great start to a career!

Chrono Therapeutics came to Sagentia with a new technology to deliver drugs transdermally which required further development. The advantage of Chrono’s technology is that the drug can be delivered to the skin in pre-programed bolus ‘pulses’, thus providing a series of peak blood concentrations of drug to coincide with cravings.

The device comprised a durable control unit which lasts for 10 weeks and disposable drug cartridges, which each last about a day, and are loaded into the durable control unit by the patient. The device is small and compact, and the disposable cartridge incorporates an adhesive-backed patch.

Sagentia took a phased approach to the project.

- Firstly, the project team carried out a theoretical evaluation and technical scouting for pumping technologies.

- This resulted in 6 concepts to be explored further and assessed against critical criteria such as cartridge cost, manufacturability, unit size and total power used.

Transdermal drug delivery device for smoking cessation therapy

- Then the most suitable concept was developed further ‘Proof of concept’ models were built and further assessed for their feasibility from a commercial and manufactural standpoint.

The challenge had a mechanical focus, but also required a software team to look at the Bluetooth and display. The electronics team were involved as part of power modelling the device. The team delivered the phases to Chrono Therapeutics in California during the 18 month project.

“We are very pleased to be working with Sagentia, whose innovative, capable and agile team has been a key part of our success.” Nick Hughes - Former Head of Global Payments, Vodafone

Vodafone realised that mobile phones had the potential to deliver money in a fast, secure and low cost way, and that global growth of mobile phone use was phenomenal. Marrying the two could bring basic financial services to the ‘unbanked’; using their mobile phones, individuals could safely send money, purchase goods and services, and operate their businesses more efficiently.

Mobile micro finance service for emerging markets

It would also help overcome the growing problem of theft, experienced by many forced to carry large sums of money, such as travellers or migrant workers.

- Sagentia and Vodafone established a flexible and scalable accounting platform for mobile money transfer integrated with the mobile network

- We deployed the service in several countries, and introduced new financial services over the core system

- This drew on our core strength in combining deep technical skills, commercial know-how and proven innovative thinking

Importantly, user requirements had to be clearly understood and the software had to be secure, robust and factory ready for roll-out once the pilot was successfully concluded. Sagentia worked with Vodafone throughout the development phase of both the pilots and the full roll out. This included running extensive market needs analyses for potential users and stakeholders and extensive prototyping so that the service and user interface would be accepted. Throughout, Sagentia used innovative approaches to help solve the myriad challenges faced in deploying an audited financial service on a mobile network operating in emerging markets.

By its 10th anniversary in 2016, 614 million M-PESA transactions had been processed and there are more than 29.5 million active customers throughout the network

Vodafone now offers M-Pesa services in 10 countries: Albania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ghana, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Romania and Tanzania

Project unlocked an important new market for Vodafone and contributed to regional economic growth

Our client wished to explore the market opportunity in the air purification space, from causes of poor air to major health concerns resulting from poor air (including allergies) to key geographies that suffer most from poor air quality, which was an adjacent space to their current market. They were also interested in current air purification devices on offer, gaps, and potential technologies that could address the gaps as well as potential partners for market entry.

- A meta-data analysis of publications was undertaken to understand the link between exposure to air contaminants and health issues

- Product databases and local language searches were used to identify current product solutions

- Review of published information was combined with expert interviews to gain insights on gaps in current offerings and potential areas of opportunity

What is the market opportunity for in-home consumer air purification devices?

Insights from Oakland research were central in developing client strategy in the air purification space. Research provided a clear understanding of the key causative agents impacting health, current solutions and gaps, potential technologies that could address these gaps and the key geographies to target

Oakland also recommended partners for market entry and technology development

The client had a strong market position due to its industry-leading specialist service, with a particular strength in complex wells. The market is set to change over the next decade due to advances in rig technology and changing well architecture.

The client required an understanding of this changing environment in order to inform their strategy, ensure their continued growth and place them in a strong competitive position for the next 10 years. This understanding came down to 4 questions which needed answering:

What is the nature and location of the well of the future?

What type of equipment and technologies will be used by operators to develop these wells?

What will our client do to adjust to these changing market conditions?

Leading to: What should our client do today to ensure the successful navigation of this changing market out to 2025?

Leatherhead advised an international snack manufacturer on how to reformulate their heritage product in order to meet changing consumer demands in the face of competition from premium brands and falling market share.

- Using Leatherhead’s sensory trained panel, we created a sensory landscape showing how our client’s product mapped against its competitors

- We overlaid the sensory data with quantitative, consumer assessments to give clear recommendations as to how the client could reformulate the product to meet consumer approval without losing its signature taste

- We created a statistical model to predict consumer appeal during recipe development, enabling leading concepts to be identified quicker and more cost effectively

“I used to eat this snack as a child, so to help make it relevant to a new market was really exciting. Being able to do this in a streamlined way by virtue of the predictive model was also a huge benefit to our client – they no longer have to do consumer testing on each product iteration so can get new concepts to market faster than before.” Emma Gubisch, Head of Insight, Leatherhead Food Research

Our client was developing a cosmetic product intended to be used by the whole family and needed to know if there were any safety issues that might prevent it from being sold as a ‘family product’ in the EU market.

- TSG’s toxicologists assessed the product formula on the basis of the toxicological profile of the ingredients

- We undertook a thorough literature review on the composition of the vegetable extracts present in the product

- The review revealed that one of the extracts naturally contained a high amount of a substance not recommended to be used on young children (below 3 years of age)

Benefits

By undertaking the toxicological assessment of the formula during development, we were able to highlight a possible safety issue on a product that was otherwise fully compliant

This enabled the client to evaluate its options – reformulate the product to remove the particular ingredient or include the relevant warnings stating that the product is not suitable for children under 3 years

By assessing the formula prior to launch, the client was able to amend the product during the development phase thus avoiding unnecessary expenses post launch, such as having to relabel the product or withdraw it from the market

Registration of a new microbial active ingredient

Our client, a start-up company, wanted to register a new microbial active ingredient (AI) with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and states.

- Our team developed a regulatory strategy from start to finish including study placement and label development

- We then submitted registration application to both EPA and state agencies

- We worked with the client to obtain Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) listing

Benefits

The new AI was successfully registered

- The project saved the company money on studies due to developing data waiver rationales

- We only needed one firm to assist in the process from initial phases throughout registration and follow up
