    This occupaton is an iconic moment forDefend Education - and our first campus-based action as an organised group. A groupof 50 stormed the Aston Webb in the earlyhours in the morning and battling withUniversity management while a flashmob ifiver 400 students danced, chanted andmarched outside. Made local and nationalnews. Lasted around 12 hours.

    11 Defend Education activists - and 145

    people in total - were arrested at a nationalanti-austerity demonstration, whenhundreds occupied Fortnum and Masonstore. This was a landmark case thatsignals the beginning of attempts bygovernment to intimidate activists intoinaction and apathy. Only 1 ocf the 11 wasfound guilty; all came away with an evenstronger commitment to activism

    Following North Gate occupation the University tookout an injunction against the students inside, banningthem from protesting on campus for 12 months. This

    was deemed a breach of human rights by Amnesty

    International and widely condemned. Only 1 studentwas identified, who was subjected to disciplinary. Onthis date Defend Education organised a huge demo,

    with hundreds of students from across the countryattending - defending Simon and protesting the protestban. The disciplinary was dropped.

    A long campaign opposing the closure of the Institute ofArchaeology and Antiquity, and the compulsory

    redundancies of 19 members of staff. This campaignended when, following the threat of strike from UCU,many of the demands were met.

    361campaign

    The University threatened 361members of support staff withredundancy unless they accepted cuts to pay and hours andagreed to move to casual contracts. DE threatened to call nationaldemonstrations on University open days, alongside members ofUNISON balloting for striking action and all campus unions holdinga May Day demo. The campaign ended in unparalleled success

    with no staff being forced onto shift work, no compulsoryredundancies, and greater protection for staff already on shift work
