1. THE PRODUCT

Use of the Product: This specification describes the requirements of anodised aluminium Insignia in gold, silver and black, for wear by the Armed Forces.

2. PATTERNS

a. Master Patterns: DC holds a Master Pattern for this product. Potential contractors may view the pattern on site by arrangement with the DC Commercial Department.

b. Standard Patterns: A Standard Pattern may be obtained from the DC Technical Information Office and may be used to provide the criteria for all materials, components and manufacturing features not fully defined in this specification.

PART 2

3. PRODUCT DESIGN

a. Product Description: Various Insignia, including badges, chevrons, crowns, stars and titles (See Table 7)

4.1 Insignia • Bright anodising quality aluminium sheet to meet the requirements of AW-1080A/H14 of:

• To comply with the requirements of BS EN 1652

• The metal used is to be 1.65mm minimum thickness. The insignia may be of a heavier gauge of aluminium to enable the definition of the Standard Pattern to be reproduced

4.4 Embellishments • Cloths wool, melton and velvet. Scarlet, red and black as on the Standard Pattern (See Table 9)

5.1 Stamping • The Insignia is to be formed using a suitable die to raise the impression of the design, using either a flat force or a shell backed force.

• The clearness and fullness of the die design is to be impressed and have a well-defined struck edge.

5.2 Clipping • The surplus material from the stamping is to be removed using a suitable press tool.

• The edges of the Insignia are to be burr free.

5.3 Piercing • The Insignia is to be correctly located in the piercing bed to ensure a clean finish.

• All edges and piercings are to be clean and free from burrs or rough edges.

5.4 Degreasing • The Insignia are to be immersed in a suitable degreasing agent e.g. perchloroethylene or an approved alternative, for a minimum of twenty seconds.

5.5 Soldering or fusion welding of Hook, shank or lugs

• When possible the operations of soldering or fusion welding should be completed before anodizing is commenced.

• All parts to be soldered are to be completely joined with the minimum of solder.

• Flux and excess solder is to be removed, leaving all joins clean, strong and smooth.

• Burned or reduced areas will not be acceptable.

• Fusion welding when used is to result in a clean finish with no burning to the front of the Insignia.

• Extruded lugs used on multi-part Insignia are to be firmly secured to ensure no movement of the mount.

5.6 Cleaning • The Insignia are to be thoroughly cleaned with a suitable cleaning agent to remove all undesirable matter such as oil, grease and metallic particles accumulated from the manufacturing process.

• The Insignia are to be well rinsed to remove any remaining cleaning agent.

5.7 Stop off/Masking • For two colour single part Insignia it will be necessary to use a suitable masking agent, which is to be cleaned after sealing or bleeding out.

• No trace of the agent is to be visible.

5.8 Polishing/Anodising • The complete Insignia is to be degreased, electro and/or chemically polished, bright anodised gold or silver, sealed and dried.

• The shade boxes containing Standard Pattern No.19508 for gold items is to be judged for colour variation to either Set A (detailed design) or Set B (plain or inconspicuous design).

• Standard Pattern No.15456 for silver items and Standard Pattern No.21863 for Royal Marine bronze items are to constitute the brightness and the colour acceptable.

• Black items to be to the relevant Standard Pattern in Table 7 for brightness and colour.

• The significant surface is the Insignia front.

4. PERFORMANCE

a. Visual Requirement of Finished Insignia The Insignia are to be compared against the appropriate Standard Pattern for mechanical imperfections and any streakiness or unequal colouring of the dyed film. They are to be viewed, under no magnification, at a distance of between 30cm to 40cm in daylight or in a daylight colour-matching booth. The colour and brightness are to conform to the Polishing/Anodising clause in Table 5 of this specification.

• Four insignia are to be stored in a suitable tropical chamber for a period of 28 days at 32° and 90% RH

• After this period if none of the insignia have changes in appearance the insignia are acceptable

Abrasion Resistance The insignia are to have no significant change in appearance.

• The insignia are to be securely mounted face side down, onto each of the four moving heads of a Martindale abrasion tester. (One convenient method is to remove the thread loop and attach the button directly to the moving head using double-sided tape)

• The heads are to be mounted onto the abrasion tester and a load of 576gms applied and rubbed against the standard worsted abradant fabric (detailed in Table 7) for 60 minutes. At the end of the test the insignia are to be removed and examined

5. MARKING

Under no circumstances should the contractor’s name, logo or trademark appear on the badge or on the packaging.

6. PACKAGING REQUIREMENTS

a. Items should always be packaged in a way to prevent damage during transit and storage.

b. The badges are to be fully assembled i.e. backing plates and cotter pins attached where applicable.

c. Badges are to be sealed (pairs or each as necessary) in a clear polythene bag. d. The bag shall be identified with a clearly printed pressure sensitive self adhesive

label firmly adhered to the outside of the package. e. Information and format on the label is to be as follows:

NATO Stock Number, Contract Number, Year of Manufacture and Denomination of Quantity (see Figure 1).

f. Multiple quantities of the same individually packaged NSNs may be shipped in the same box. Mixed NSN multiple packaging is not permitted.

g. Multiple packaging label - Each outer package is to be clearly labelled with the NSN, Contract Number, year of manufacture, Denomination of Quantity, Quantity (see Figure 2)

h. Additionally, all packaging requirements quoted in the terms & conditions of the contract are to be adhered to.
