October issue - 25th Sept 2011

Hello there.....and welcome to issue 92. Well, where to start? Facts first I suppose -

Deep didn’t come out last month simply because we’d written it before theriots, and it was due to come just after it had all kicked off. The contentstherefore seemed entirely inappropriate, so we abandoned it until thisissue. We hope you understand.

To be honest, this issue has been one of the most difficult we’ve everwritten, in terms of tone if nothing else. We were going to do a piece onthe actual riots, but we chose not to for two reasons; 1) No-one still seemsentirely sure of what happened when, so it’d be a lot of conjecture, andwe’re not a tabloid, and 2) we’ve been busting our arses shining a light onthe positive side of living in Croydon for over eight years now - it’s a hellof a lot more difficult than slagging the place off - but that’s what we do,we believe in it, we’re quite good at it, and we refuse to let a few hundredmindless, amoral, grasping little scrotes change that.

At this juncture, I would just like to point anyone who still thinks thatthe riots in Croydon were caused by anything other than a bunch ofmindless, amoral, grasping little scrotes in the direction of the little tv repairshop in Cherry Orchard Road. It’s been there, independent andindependently run, tiny and wonderful, for donkey’s years. They werecompletely cleaned out, so now the owners are having to buy replacementtvs, with their own money, for people whose own tellys were in the shopawaiting repair (looters - happy with your non-functioning tvs are you?Idiots). I’m not sure you can call that in any way smashing the system...Incidentally, in my very humble opinion, anyone who actually asks for areplacement should be ashamed of themselves - would you go anddemand a telly from someone whose livelihood had been destroyed? No,you wouldn’t. And while we’re here, if you are thinking of buying a telly inthe near future, can we suggest you go down there and give them yourcustom. Cheers.

So anyway, yes, we’re going to continue to do what we do,highlighting the wealth of talented, creative, generous, community-spirited,as it says on the window of the Dragon ‘fantastic weirdos’ who live, workand play in sunny Croydon. So there.

And thusly, in that vein, this month’s mag is a veritable plethora ofpositivity (even more so than usual), with articles focusing on people andthings that make us feel a warm glow inside, and that’s even before we’vehad a drink.

And finally, as Deep readers, we’re going to assume you’re like us,already digging the ‘yay - Croydon!’ vibe we’ve been emitting for the pasteight years, (I don’t know why I went a bit 70s there) and while we’reimmensely heartened to see everyone else getting with it, it’s a shame ittook the aforementioned scrotes to do it. Still, we sincerely hope it

continues. As will we. Until next month then, belike us, f*** the riots, lovethe Cronx...Avanti, allons-y, cheers!Angela xxx

Petal Dunwoody catches up with Boot-Led Zeppelin drummer, Croydon All-Stars CharityGig organiser & all round superstar Mat Martin to talk riots, recovery and rock’n’roll. . .

4

Having been in bands most of mylife, and knowing how difficult itis to get 5 musicians to agree to

be in one place in one time, it’s ameasure of how apalled everyone wasby the riots, how much everyone wantsto do something to help and what highregard Mat himself is held in that notonly has he managed to organise over30 musicians, plus helpers, sponsors anda host of other folk to be in one place atone time, but he’s managed to do it allin a fantastically short amount of time.

The Croydon All Stars Charity gig wasconceived about 3 weeks ago, and ithappens on the 18th September, all toraise money for those affected by theriots through the Mayor of Croydon’s‘Recovery’ charity. So, without soundingtoo obvious, what made you want toput the gig on?

“I was looking at the news footagewhen it was all going off and seeingRockbottom get looted. I worked thereyears ago, know the owner really well

and know Colin the drum teacher there, they were such sad images, and thenafter seeing other people setting upthings - not particularly to raise money -but awareness pages, I thought it’d benice to actually do something to raisemoney.

“After hearing some of the stories ofpeople trying to escape burningbuildings and looters and rioters andwhatever throwing stuff at them, Ithought actually, yeah, people have losthomes in this as well as businesses andit’d be nice if something which I knowCroydon does really well - which is ahealthy live music scene - could cometogether and raise money for it.

”I was walking around Croydon theother day and even though they’ve donea great patch-up job you go and lookaround and you actually realise thedamage that’s been done is ridiculous. You have to see it for yourself to realisethat you want to put your hand in yourpockets and try to help out.”

Obviously the event is to raise moneybut what else do you hope will come outof it?

“I think just from the programmeitself there are a lot of diverse bands thatmight not have ever played togetherbefore, and they’re all quite notoriousCroydon bands in their own right. Wehave such a good lively music scenehere.

“The fact is £12 is pretty cheap to seea bill like that and I think it’s moreimportant for people to come and seethat and feel like they’re being involvedwith something whilst being entertainedrather than just having to dip in theirmoney to put a tenner in a box. It’s abig collection of diverse music loverscoming together and enjoying a daytogether - that’s the main purpose, tosort of lift the spirits a bit.

“Even if you’re not from Croydon -for example, the keyboard player in myband used to live in one of the buildingsthat was burned down so he was

straight up for it, and he now lives inBrighton so he’s disconnected fromCroydon - I think there’s a lot of peoplewho used to live here and haveconnections to here that have looked atit and thought ‘if there’s something thatI can get involved with and besupportive of...’

“It would’ve been nice if there was abigger venue that we could’ve usedcloser to the centre of Croydon thatcould’ve catered for the amount ofpeople we’re hopefully going to get, butthat can’t be helped. If we’d have had afew months prep and had maybe gotthe Fairfield Halls then we could’ve fittedmore bands in, but by that time we’dhave lost the immediacy of whathappened. The venue we’ve got is great,it’s got a good bar, they’re lovely people, and they’re really behind us, so it’shopefully going to be a really goodday.”

How long did it take to fill the bill?“It took about 20 minutes. I wanted

us (Boot Led Zeppelin) to headlinebecause we don’t do a lot of charitystuff and we also don’t do a lot inCroydon, so it was kind of a spurring onto do something where I live as well assupport a good cause. No one in theband said no, they all gave me theirdiaries and then it was a case of findinga venue that was free.

“As soon as we’d got that sorted andset the date everyone else we asked wasstraight in - Al (Banned Sauce) said yesimmediately, Geoff (DJ) was straight upfor it, ‘whenever wherever’, Ritchie(Kitty Hudson) was straight back to me -he was the first person to post on thefacebook wall saying it was going to befucking awesome! Dave (23 Enigma)was brilliant and they were straight onboard, as was Barry (Miss Nic).

“Junk Time Party said yes straightaway, then found that their drummerwas away, but they’ve found asubstitute (who is actually Ricky thedrummer’s son, Ricky Jr - Ed) so thatthey can still do it. That tells I think ofhow much people want to do it. Theresponse has been fantastic. And evenapart from the bands, everyone I workwith is volunteering to help out on theday.

“Basically to sum it up, everyonethat I’ve asked to be involved hasn’teven thought about it before getting onboard - everyone’s seen it as a positivething to do, the companies that havegot involved to sponsor it by giving uswhat we need to put the event on havebeen brilliant and I’m just hoping that it’sgoing to be a really really special daythat people will remember for a longtime and they take a positive messagefrom it. I hope more than anything elsethat the people taking part really enjoy itas well because no-one’s getting paid, everyone involved is giving up their timeand their effort to put on somethingspecial, everyone just wants to beinvolved in something positive to raisemoney for a really good cause, andevery single penny that’s made from it isgoing towards the charity.”

There’s been a lot of talkrecently about ‘communityspirit’, like it’s a new thing.

Unfortunately, some of those samepeople who think it’s a new thingseem to be using it to gain themselvessome sort of credibility, which, in ourbook, means they just aint got it.

Luckily there are thousands ofpeople out there (and we humblyinclude ourselves in this category)who’ve not only got it but who’vehad it for a considerable amount oftime. Groups, individuals, clubs andassociations, businesses, pubs andtheir punters and many many morewho go about their work, quietly andwith no little amount of dignity, raising funds for good causes, volunteering, just generally helpingout and in the main having fun, meeting new friends and fosteringfurther spirit into the bargain. Onesuch group is the ‘Friends Of HalingGrove’, who’ve been doing exactlythat since 2009 and don’t intend tostop any time soon.

For those not acquainted, HalingGrove is a park in South Croydon. Infact, it’s the park nearest to where Igrew up, where I nearly killed myselfon the ‘Witches Hat’ in theplayground, where Butch the dog gotoff his leash and properly buggeredoff through people’s gardens forabout six hours, where we used toplay football before going to the pubon a Sunday and, on one memorableoccasion, a freezing Boxing Daymorning.

So far so parky, I hear you say, butthis one is a bit special. Originally partof the Haling Grove Estate, it wasowned by horse-breeder Mr SydneyShorter, who was regularly seenexercising his horses on the grove,.The whole place was bequeathed toCroydon by his widow on thecondition that it remain a park. Theactual estate house is long gone andthe grass has extended over its site, but bits of it remain in the shape of aha ha (I had to look this up - it’s atrench designed to keep grazinglivestock off the ornamental gardens),it’s kitchen garden, which is now a

rose walk and, the really special bit, awalled garden with fish-filledornamental pond.

This walled garden, unfortunately, isn’t open all of the time as one of itsconditions of opening is a need tohave someone supervising (becauseof the water, you see - someonemight fall in) and this is what theFriends of Haling Grove do, give uptheir time to be there when they can,to look after the park, maintaining itin association with Croydon Parks, making sure no scrotes ruin it foreveryone else, raise funds forplayground equipment (theplayground is fab) and other neededstuff, look after the shelter and theflowers, generally do good deeds and‘encourage more people to use thepark facilities and enjoy its beautifulsetting’. They’re made up of localresidents and other caring types, andrather than being the staid group youmay have expected, they’re all aboutthe fun down there in South Croydon.

When we were there, it was for thegrand opening of their latest initiative,a Community Orchard, lots of nascenttrees near the back of the walledgarden, which was heralded by athree piece jazz band playing all dayin the park shelter and an invitation toall to bring picnics and BBQs, drinksand nibbles. The sun shone (mainly),kids were running about, the people

mingled and ate and drank and weremerry, and the local characters wereout in force.

After some rousing speeches andthe ribbon-cutting ceremony theorchard was officially declared openon 28th August 2011, after whichthere was more eating and drinking, more excellent jazz and some dancingin front of the shelter as the sun wentdown.

This was the first event we’d beento in the park, but it won’t be our lastas they hold loads of events up there. In the recent past they’ve had dog-shows, big lunches, easter-egg hunts, mulled wine and mince pies for StNicholas’ Day, impromptu BBQs andhalloween parties. In fact, the nextevent is another halloween do on30th October and as usual, all arewelcome to come down, have somefun, meet some new people and getinto this new-fangled thing ofcommuntity spirit. We’ll see youthere!

Have you ever found a bit of cashon the street or some niftydoodad on the floor that gets

forgotten in a drawer? Or done a bit offreganism down the market at closingtime (such a good idea at the time untilthe kitchen gets full of tiny flies)? All thisstuff dropped, discarded and otherwisemisplaced is all random is it not? Well, itappears some not at all. Last month wesigned up to, and had our first forayinto, the world of Geocaching.

Geocaching is a treasure hunt typegame on a global scale. People leavewaterproof containers anywhere thatthey find interesting or significant. Theywill put a paper log in there, which isfilled in by the finders, and sometimesitems to trade or swap. The 'Cacher' willthen record the item's co-ordinates on alisting website: (this is the one we usedwww.geocaching.com) and put up a

description of the cache where they’ll tellyou why they’ve put one there, so youmight just learn something about yourimmediate environs into the bargain, and, given that they’re in the maindropped by locals, you may even beguided to somewhere you’ve never beenbefore right on your doorstep. Once youhave found an item you will update theonline details with when you found itand make any comments e.g. the paperlog in the container is full, or justthanking the hider for an interestingcache.

This is one of those special activitiesthat eludes the notice of the workadayworld to such an extent that there havebeen various caches around all over theworld, including Antarctica (and in space- there’s one on the International SpaceStation apparently), for the last 10 yearswithout anyone I know having a clue.On the website there is a nifty map thatshows where the caches are near to yourpostcode. if you zoom out a bit you’llsee the whole of north western Europe iscovered with caches.

I've always loved these 'aside'activities: not being at school and

watching the roadworks, club basedCarolina hardcore ecstasy on Tuesdayearly afternoon or gigs on snow daywhere fans were unable to get to thedoor to extend their enthusiasm. There isan awful lot of utter crap both on andsupported by the internet but here wehave something, apparently trivial, whichtends to make me feel slightly gladder tobe a human in this age.

You know us at Deep Towers, drinking and having a laugh aroundtown is a bit of a priority. However, asbeer gets ever nearer to £4 a pint, 20fags to £8 and soon saying boo to agoose will be punishable by death(except of course if you own anewspaper or if you are a goose)geocache offers an alternativeentertainment. It's generally free (thegeocache iphone app does cost money, but you don’t technically need it, we just

found it helpful as we’re beginners) and,not wishing to sound nerdish, engagesyou with your environment (geocacherstend to pick up litter at sites and havegenerally accepted rules to minimise

their impact on nature, to respect privateproperty, and to avoid public alarm). Also, it offers benign communicationwith people from all over the world whoare happy to simply be somewhere andacknowledge that fact. I could wax onabout exploding stars but I shan't. Dogo and visit your local cache(s), have alook around you, perhaps hold your chinand go 'mmmmmmmmmmmmmm'.

This is precisely what we did, lookingaround, smack bang in the centre ofCroydon, attracting stares from the pubopposite’s clientele, for about 30 minutesuntil we found the little prize of our firstgeocache. Well worth the effort.

We found the easiest to use websiteis the ‘official’ one at:www.geocaching.com, which has a goodintroduction section and highlightscaches suitable for beginners. Oh, anddon’t let some of the smug terms usedby (very few) participants put you off -we didn’t, and we’re looking forwardnext weekend to a couple of days ofwalking in places we wouldn’t normallygo, taking in the surroundings (andhopefully the sunshine) and looking forthings we didn’t, until a couple of weeksago, even know existed...

Petal Dunwoody’s rough guide to the global GPS treasure hunt that is ‘Geocaching’

“I’ve always loved these ‘aside’ activities - thingsthat elude the notice of the workaday world andmake me feel slightly gladder to be a human. . .”

Every dot on this map is a cache placedby someone, for a reason, that you canboth go and find, and find out why.

It’s a new arts & crafts market at The Oval Tavern.

See what we did there..?

One of the things, we’ve foundover the years, that Croydonseems to have a wealth of is

people who get off their backsides andDO STUFF. A case in point is wasproved on Sunday 4th September byone Tina Crawford when she launchedthe ‘Concrete Market’ a new arts andcrafts fair being held at The Oval Tavernin East Croydon. Actually, the samecould be said of Graham and the gangat The Oval for being forward-thinkingabout the use of their pub, so kudos allround!

The actual fair was the first of whatTina hopes will be many such events tobring like-minded craft businessestogether to promote quality, creativeproducts, and she had already enlistedmany interesting crafts-people toshowcase their wares (see below) onstalls, as well as some vintage makeoverartists to spruce up willing punters onthe day.

As well as organising the market,Tina has a long history of arts and craftswork herself, training at Central StMartins before going on to jewellerydesign & textile decoration withtelevision production sandwiched inbetween.

Her first role was working on achildren's art programme creating the'makes', but her career ended 10 yearslater due to chronic illness. Rather thanbeing confined to the sofa Tina took tothe sewing machine re-teaching herselfold skills and started to make Twinklehandbags which adorned the shouldersof presenters such as Donna Air, Lisa

Rogers and Jools Oliver. Just as Twinkle looked to be getting

off the ground, Tina’s conditionworsened and she had to give it up.Since then, Tina has started a newventure, named after her son Toby, called Tobyboo, whose freehandmachine embroidered products will beat the market. See what we mean aboutgetting off backsides and doing stuff?

So far so fabulous, but it does seem aslightly odd juxtaposition of idea andvenue, so why the concrete market andwhy The Oval? Tina explains;

“I wanted there to be regular eventsto showcase the vast variety of crafttalent in a really informal environment.

“We’ll take things one stitch at atime but I intend to run these eventsregularly. It’s great to have this amazingvariety of talent under one roof. Thisisn't just a fair for local people this is adarn good market for all to venture tofor quality craft.

“I've been thinking about starting upsomething like this in Croydon for ayear now and had seen other places butthey never felt right. Sometimes whatyou're looking for is right in front ofyou. I wanted another outlet to sell mybespoke creations from and knew therewould be like-minded people wantingto do the same.

“I’m getting more and more excitedand slightly worried about how much Iwill be spending on the day because ofall the fantastic makers on board.”

We popped along to the firstConcrete Market and, as someone elsewho was in there, who didn’t know it

was going on andhad just poppedin for a pint said ‘Ithought I’dwalked into thewrong pub’. TheOval wasunrecognisable, absolutelycrammed full ofknick-knacks,doodads and bitsand pieces. Entrywas free, the BBQwas in full swing, the bar was openand there was ahealthy number ofpunters poringover the crafts on

display. The rain was annoying, buthappily it was only a couple of showersand didn’t seem to have dampenedanyone’s spirits. All the stall holders, andindeed the punters, were enthusiasticabout this new venture, very friendlyand, I think, having a relativelysuccessful day given it was the first one.

We bumped into Tina the next dayat, bizarrely, Legoland, and she hopes tohold another concrete market soon, butshe’s not sure when yet (the latestpossible date we’ve had is 26thNovember). We’ll keep you informed,or you can keep up to date atwww.concretemarket.blogspot.com Inthe meantime, if you’ve seen somethingyou fancy in our photos, or if you’re aprospective stallholder and want tocheck out what sort of thing everyoneelse is doing, you can find most of thestallholders online at the addressesbelow.

Another month, another fantasticStand! event and, this month, another

new Deep writer who, because he’s yet to furnish me with his preferred nom de plume (one daysomeone will write for us under their own name), we’ll simply call ‘The Shadow’. Ooh, mysterious!

12

Standing room only @ STAND, herein The Arnhem Gallery, well apartfrom the 25 chairs/stools dotted

around, (I know ‘cos I counted them) butthese were already taken by the time Iarrived, mainly by middle aged womenaccompanied by compliant husbandswho were dispatched to the bar every sooften to purchase the required G and T,not much Sambuca being sold tonight.Brixton Academy it ain’t but why was Ihere? Let me explain!

I couldn’t believe it, I’d finally got thecall, 13:52 GMT (ok, text, as this is 2011),my writing career was about to take off. What was the assignment, a superstarperforming at the 02, the Fringe Festival

in Edinburgh, the preview of the BigBrother contestants going into the house?Nothing quite so glamorous, but therewere 2 tickets with the words “PRESSTICKETS” on them waiting for me at thefront desk. Our bonsai editor finallyrealised that being in all places at oncewasn’t gonna happen tonight, not unlessshe got some time and space wormholejiggery pokery manipulation shit goingon.

“James Hunter” was midway througha song, so I propped up the bar, myselfand my plus one, and surveyed the 150or so crowd, nodding appreciatively to hismelodic guitar playing. “Nothing toooffensive’ i thought, sounds like a mix ofPaul Weller and Van Morrison. The nexttrack was “Home Grown Man” whichwas one i really got into, especially thesounds coming out of the keyboard, lotsof sliding up and down the keys. “OneMore Chance” was another that rolledinto my eardrums rather pleasantly. “Wellthanks for coming early” said the frontman, “this is the last one from us”.“HANG ON!”, I thought, “something’snot right here” The band played out with“Don’t Bring Me Down” a much liveliernumber but pretty much in the same veinas the previous tunes. Frantic to-ing andfro-ing ensued, the sound engineer didn’tknow, the bar staff didn’t know, the guyin the shiny gold paisley shirt, cowboyboots and stetson probably knew but ididn’t ask him. Eventually i found out, I’d

actually been listening to the support,SAM HARE and his band for the last 45minutes.

The real JAMES HUNTER stood centrestage, totally in charge of his Gibsonguitar looking resplendent in a tonic bluesuit, and, from were I was standing, bearing a slight resemblence to both BillyJoel and Michael Keaton. Either side werethe 5 other members of the band, 2 onsax, a cravat wearing upright bassist, keyboard player and drummer. (Thekeyboard player is apparantly the manbehind the music for Rastamouse and setfor big things, does it get any bigger thanRastamouse?). Straight away JamesHunter launched into some lively banter

with his loyal followers and then intosome even livelier big band sound music. This Grammy nominated artist, aftergiving us a little taster of R&B, movedinto a slower, reggae/ska style beforetearing it up again with a number called“Riot” which reminded me of Yeh Yeh byMatt Bianco, the 2nd riot I’d experiencedin a week, minus the looters, arsonists and Boris the Mayor. AJames Brown sounding number, remeniscent of “Please” coupledwith the playing of the keyboardmaestro had the sax playersengaged in some choreographedhand waving and the audiencejiving around.

The crowd had swelled toaround 250 by now and MrHunter was in full swing. “Whatd’you wanna hear?” he askedthe gatherers. As one the handsflew up and the unanimouschoice was “Carina”, “Bollocks”he sighed, jokingly of course.Once more a subtle reggae vibefilled the hall. It was 10.15 nowand the entire front of the stagewas boppin’ jiving and shufflingto the sound of “ConcreteLove”, an intense, big band, footshuffling tune which spread themovement of the peoplethroughout the room, old schoollovers were jiving at the bar andbloody good at it they were too.

“What’s Going On” was his ‘pretend’ lasttune before the entire band left the stagefor what was about 15 seconds. Backthey came, the Big band Sound beltedout from the speakers and Mr Hunterfinished in fine voice with the addedbonus of some James Brown-esqemoving-and-a-shaking.

As the auditorium emptied, little dideveryone know, Graham, (the oldguv’nor from the Oval) was dj-ingafterwards to wind down with an eclecticmix of vinyl music. “STAND”, check itout.

In what seems to be something of a running theme this month, here are yet more people who’ve got off their backsides and done stuff...

There is possibly only onething sadder than an shut-down pub and that’s a well

loved pub that suddenly becomes achrome plated wine bar (The CoolRooms, anyone? Or that brief dark(I say dark, it was so bright shadeswere required) period The Ship wentthrough? *Shudders*). Actually, inlight of recent events, seeing a pubthat’s been set on fire is sad too, but,in a small mercies kind of way, atleast The Eagle was actually emptyat the time.

But I digress - It’s nice, therefore, when - in a bit of happy serendipity- an old empty pub is re-opened bypeople who frequented its previousincarnation. We’ve all thoughtabout it, talked about it, usuallywhen we’ve had a few - we shouldre-open that pub / buy a pub / club/ venue / insert drunken idea here -the difference between most of therest of us and Claire and Simon, newowners of The Odd Shoe (more onthat later) is that they’ve actuallygone and done it. And yes, itapparently was a direct result of adrunken conversation.

The Odd Shoe, in case youhaven’t come across it yet, stands

on the site of the old Rat and Parrott(or, for those of you of a certain age,the old The Croydon (MKII)) on thecorner of Park Street and StGeorge’s Walk, architectually notthe prettiest of areas, but the pub isnice - they’ve kept the fantastic pull-back doors which gives it an airy feelin any hot weather we may or notexperience again before autumnsets in. Inside too it’s airy open plan, with plenty of seats and a new pooltable. They haven’t got a kitchen atthe moment - from what we cangather the last incumbents (anyoneremember Windy City?) took it withthem when they went, removinghalf the back wall in the process, sothere’s no food available, but, in abit of forward thinking similar tothat of the Half and Half, people areencouraged to bring their lunnch in,and have a sit down and a pint.Claire explains that the idea camefrom when she used to be an officeworker, not wanting to sit at herdesk eating her sandwiches, and notbeing able to find anywhere nice tosit outside the office. Makes sensethen.

Elsewhere, they’ve got a goodline in drinks deals, with the wine

being particularly reasonable, andan ever-growing roster of eventsand dos.

They’ve been open for a coupleof months now, and are slowlyincreasing in both regular clienteleand experience. Of course therehave been teething troubles, acouple of blocked toilets on openingnight, the staff having to guard thebar all night in case of rioters, youknow, the usual, but the great thingis that they’re new, they’re totallyindependent, they’re keen andenthusiastic, they’re open to ideasand they were, until very recently, pub punters.

And why ‘The Odd Shoe’?Apparently it comes from shortlyafter the conversation about buyingthe pub when Claire had anunfortunate hungover coutureincident and turned up to workwearing alarmingly mismatchedshoes. Now, do these or do thesenot sound like people after our ownheart? Exactly, reward them withyour custom!

The Odd Shoe, 24 Park Street,Croydon.

Acouple of weeks ago, Edith andI were delighted to be invitedto Portofino to celebrate the

birthday of one of our oldest friends."How generous!" we thought, andcommenced packing for a trip to apicturesque coastal town in Italy famedfor its watersports and pastel-colouredhouses. Edith had thoroughly waxedher trusty wakeboard although weremembered she had left the shallowfin in Lyme Regis so we had to quicklyebay for another. My new Thrusterboard arrived from Surfed Out alongwith an extensive selection ofboardshorts and rash vests. By the time

we'd assembled everything, cancelledthe fruit and veg man, fathomed outthe automatic timer for the lava lamp(it's best to look as if you're at home, Ialways say), we looked (and felt) as ifwe'd packed for a six month hiking tripto the Antipodes.

We took a taxi to "just off the M23”as instructed where we were met bythe Birthday Boy who looked ratherperplexed at the huge amount ofluggage assembled around us. Havingloaded it precariously onto his roof rackwe climbed into his car and off wewent. Halfway down the A264 werealised were going in the oppositedirection to Gatwick and a few minuteslater we pulled up in front of"Portofino", a nondescript lookingItalian eating establishment in EastGrinstead.

Well can you imagine ourdisappointment? Still, we thought, there are bound to be some exquisiteItalian waiters to soften the blow. Wewere met at the door by Luigi (notexquisite at all - in fact he walked like aThunderbirds puppet) who lookedaskance at our pile of luggage, andseated us in the far corner. The closestto pastel coloured anything was a buffcoloured menu although there was a

poorly executed painting of the realPortofino on the wall by the till.

Edith and I studied the buff menu.Starters were all over £7 and we onlyhad a pocket full of Lira (Edithsteadfastly refuses to deal in any waywith the fiasco that is the Euro). Wesettled for a bottle of house rosé andgot stuck in. By the time our maincourses arrived we were at the tiddlystage and I felt moved to tackle Luigi(marginally less repulsive after half abottle of rosé) about the pitiful quantityof "rosti" (very small potato squares)on my plate. He scowled a lot butproduced a tablespoon more. At some

stage I must have ordered anotherbottle of wine but there wasn't a lot tosoak it up with so, as you can imagine,mischief-making rose to the top of themenu. We set about attempting to re-enact the potato basketball match of1991 by lobbing most of Edith's newpotatoes into the uplighters. Edith hadbrought along a small radio with an earplug so she thoughtfully provided ablow by blow account of the Arsenal-Udinese game, using a raffia mat as thepitch and peas and diced carrots as thetwo teams (we were peas – Italyobviously). Quite why our teamcontained Fern Britton's husband and awoman named Maria is a mystery tome but then I never really understoodsport. No wonder we lost.

At last the dessert menus arrived andI was very surprised (and delighted) tosee that I could order a Semifreddo."I'll have half a frog", I guffawed to abemused Luigi, while Edith shriekedwith laughter at the Affrogato.(Actually it was Affogato, but after twobottles of wine it's hard to see straight).Menus successfully amended with eyepencil (much to Luigi's obviousdispleasure) we wondered if we shouldcarry out an impromptu kitcheninspection. No, apparently that just

wasn't going to happen. Luigi managedto assemble an assortment of kitchenytype people who linked armspurposefully in front of the door andsomebody in our party decided that itwould be advisable if we paid and left.Edith left a large pile of Lira as a tip(afterwards I worked out that she hadactually left the equivalent of 8p) andpromptly lay down on my surfboard asher legs had given way. Between us wetowed her out and poked her into apassing taxi, along with the rest of ourparaphernalia.

Edith felt a bit more lively by 1amand on the way home we thoughtfullyknocked up the fruit and veg man (andmost of his family) to tell him that wewanted to reinstate our Wednesdaydelivery. Wasn't he pleased! Buonanotte i miei amici. Surfing felice.
