GREETING

My word to the new high school student shall be simply the wish that he may accomplish as much as possible in the length of time that he is in attendance in the high school. Not all pupils who attend high school get the same amount of training out of their work. It depends upon the attitude and abilities of the pupil. There are always a few pupils in a graduating class who could teach some of the others for several years, because they have mastered the work, reacted upon it, thought about it, and made it their own. But few events in a man's life are as great as his entrance to high school. Here his social life is enriched by his associations with pupils who come from distant school districts and his class work and subjects are of a different nature. Here often a pupil who has hitherto had a smooth road upon the educational, highway finds obstacles which he is unable to surmount, and falls, gropes blindly on, and accomplishes little. Fortunately a larger number who have climbed slowly upward and who doubtless have made a struggle in order to finish the grades, have before they had finished the first year of high school had a revelation, a new vision, a richer concept of life, and a golden future opened up to them. What it can do for you I cannot say. My hope is that it will prepare you for and guide you to a prosperous and happy life's work. With my hope, I pledge you the help of every member of the faculty and my interest in your welfare and I welcome you to become a member of the student body of the Bradley High School.

R. P. Welker Superintendent.

CLASS HISTORY In the year of 1928, forty-five "green little freshies"

entered the Bradley High School. During the next three years some of the pupils dropped out, and new ones came in, until by the year of 1932, only twenty seven of the "green freshies" survived to bear the exalted name of "Mighty Senior."

Although they were proverbially thought to be "green", to use the slightly sarcastic terms of the upper classmen, they showed their true colors by coming out on the top.

Their Frosh year proved one of many pitfalls. Unwarned, they stumbled through the mystic ceremony of the initiation. Even then at that early stage of their High School career, they became a vital part of the school. Five members of the Glee Club in "28-29" were Freshmen girls, among them were: Vera Gillen, Josephine Messick, Darlene Bade, Vivian Legris, and Elinor Kammann who helped to win the banner which adorns the assembly hall. The boys excelled in basketball, track and baseball. Adolf Leszczewicz received a major letter in basketball.

In "29-30" they became full-fledged Sophomores, somebody for the Freshmen to look up to. They settled down to the business of initiating the Freshmen, and they gave them all they had received as Freshmen, with a little more to be remembered by.

Their accomplishments in the athletic line grew. These boys won letters in Basketball: L. Benoche, A. Leszczewicz, received majors while H. LeMaster received a minor. Again honors were won in Glee Club, the following girls participating in the contest: Vera Gillen, Darlene Bade, Eleanor Roush, Josephine Messick, Ida Blanchette, Genevieve Raich, and Vivian LeGris.

A new member, Lawrence Benoche from St. Anne High School, entered the class, making another player for the Basketball team.

In "30-31" they became flighty Juniors; how proud they were of themselves! This was a big year for the Juniors. They worked hard to raise money for the Junior-Senior Banquet, and it was put over with a great success. Their accom-plishments in Basketball, Track, Oration, Declamation and Glee Club still advanced further. Adolf Leszczewicz received an award in Oration. The following boys received major letters in Basketball: L. Powers, F. Anderson, & L. Benoche.

Page 18: Dedication - bhsil.orgbhsil.org/people_places_folder/bradley_public_sch_images/bhs_1932_annual.pdfKavaney, now happily married to Ben Turpin Jr. and residing at Calexico, Mexico. At

D. Marcotte, L. Mailloux received minor letters. L. Mailloux, L. Benoche, and H. LeMaster received track letters.

Four new members, Lawrence Hayes, Delphis Marcotte, Leo Mailloux from St. Viator Academy and Lawrence Power from the Chatsworth High School entered the class, increasing the number of students to twenty-seven.

In "31-32" we took upon ourselves the duties of "Mighty seniors". We made our most difficult year our most successful. Almost all of the Seniors attained prominence by being staff members, Glee Club members, basketball players, baseball players, or literary contestants.

Eight of the Senior girls, who have participated in the Glee Club received letters. These girls are Josephine Messick, Vera Gillen, Eleanor Roush, Darlene Bade, Mildred. Topliff, Ida Blanchette, and Elinor Kammann.

Three Senior boys, L. Benoche, H. LeMaster, and Adolf Leszczewicz, received the honor of being members of the Athletic Scholarship Association. These three boys and L. Power and L. Mailloux received major letters for their good work in basketball. Delphis Marcotte and Julius Steinmarch received minor letters.

The Senior boys picked on the All Star Teams are H. LeMaster, All-County Guard; L. Power, All-District Guard; L. Benoche, All-County and All-District Forward.

Our school days are ended. -- what will we be doing in the future? Let's turn over a page and see what has become of us.

SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY

In 1957, at the death of Floyd Gibbons, I was assigned to carry on his work as headline hunter for the Associated Press. My new position entailed travels both in this country and abroad.

Since leaving Bradley High School I had kept a careful list of the addresses of my classmates and always carried this list with me on my travels, so that I could keep check of the good fortunes of my comrades of former years in the good old school at Bradley.

One can hardly realize how swiftly the time has elapsed and here I find myself in my room tonight recalling the happy meetings with my former school chums, who are scattered practically all over the world.

My first trip took me to the west coast where I was sent to interview the leaders of the moving picture industry. I had an appointment with the President of the Midnight Pictures of Hollywood who was none other than our erstwhile basketball star Lawrence Benoche whose salary is now $125,000 a year. He has a palatial residence at Cocoanut-by-the-Sea. At a party which he gave at his house in my honor I was happy to meet Louise Kavaney, now happily married to Ben Turpin Jr. and residing at Calexico, Mexico. At the same party I met president Benoche's private secretary who was none other than our pal Vivian Legris. She was stunning as she walked about directing the guests, in the company of her inseparable companion Agnes Pakulski, now a retired society belle of Hollywood.

The day following the party I was an interested spectator at the football game played at the Rose bowl in Pasadena between Notre Dame and Southern California, the South Bend School having as its coach Lawrence Power Jr. and the Trojans under the able direction of Harold LeMaster. After a hard fought battle on the gridiron the game ended in a scoreless tie. I met both of the coaches after the game and together we recalled many happy incidents of life at Bradley School.

Leaving California I went to Seattle Washington to meet Laura Beland, who had just landed at the Municipal Airport after a successful non-stop flight around the world. Imagine my surprise when I met Darlene Bade and Bert Nor-man in the Genevieve Raich Dancing School, the largest of its kind in the Northwest. Darlene, Bert, Genevieve, and I had dinner together at Paul Hubert's Silver Fish restaurant. We were royally entertained and oh! the happy memories of by

gone days when we heard the sweet tones of a well known Soprano, Mildred Topliff, who is called the Nightingale of the Cascades.

Early the next morning I boarded a ship for the Hawaian Islands. The Captain of the ship looked very familiar to me and he proved to be our old classmate Eugene Nickell. Having Wirelessed to Honolulu, I was met at the dock by Leo Mailloux now recognized as the greatest Chemist in the service of the United States Government. Leo is married and lives in a pretentious home in the Moana Valley close to the city; his estate is the showplace of the island. I also had the good fortune to visit the business managers of the Honolulu Gazette, none other than our garrulous friends Vera Gillen and Elinor Kammann.

Aboard the steamship Niagara I journeyed to Japan to report for the Associated Press on the Turko-Japanese War, which had been declared a month before I left Honolulu. The trip to Japan was doubly interesting to me in as much as I had an appointment with my old friend of 1932, General Adolf Leszczewicz, who was in command of the Turkish expeditionary forces. I met him shortly before the battle of Fujiyama. At this battle our old friend was slightly wounded and while he was at the hospital I spent several days with him, helping me write my memoirs of that encounter. I was in Japan until the close of the war in 1959 and crossed over to Manchuria to cover the activities of the Mukden Red Cross which had served so faithfully during the Turko-Japanese war. In charge of the nurses during this conflict was Vivian Lund; she was decorated by the Emperor for bravery and was the first woman to receive the medal of the Rising Sun.

What a surprise when I passed through Berlin on my way to France, I met Josephine Messic who was on a tour around the world; she had been married. Her husband a very wealthy merchant of Havana Cuba, having died in the past year. Jose-phine had decided upon this voyage to soothe her grief.

Arriving in Paris I reported to our foreign office, and found that the manager was Lawrence Hayes, who had been promoted from our headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. To my surprise Lawrence greeted me in French; he told me that he had been studying the language since the days he had served in French Indo-China. My Parisian engagement permitted me stay several days at Lawrence's apartment and meet his very interesting wife and children. Close to our office our former schoolmate Ann Mathews is the prosperous manager of a well known cosmetic shop her business has now grown to one

of the largest on the continent. In England I had the happiness of recalling old times with Izetta Milligan and Ruth Nelson, who occupy important positions with the British Broadcasting Company directing the culinary and the domestic science departments of this world renowned radio concern. Leaving Liverpool, three days later I arrived in New York in time to attend the boxing bouts at Madison Square Garden. The director, our industrious friend of high school days, Floyd Anderson, arranged that I should have a select place to view the fistic encounters. He told me that Ida Blanchette was living in Palm Beach Florida; she had been the President of the Milliners Association of America, and had made a great success of her position. On my way home from Madison Square, I met an old familiar face, none other than Eleanor Roush. After greeting me she said she just returned from Alaska where she interviewed the managers of her Hotel De Ritz.

Back home. Perhaps it was the trip or perhaps the pleasant knowledge that my friends have all been so successful that makes me feel so happy. Which it is I really don't know, but I am to tired to write anymore.

Class meetings were held at 8:35 A.M. on the first and third Thursdays of every month. A program was given at each meeting. These programs consisted of songs, stories, readings, etc.

Plans for raising funds for the Junior-Senior banquet were made. In addition to money collected for class dues, money was raised by selling candy and pop at the basketball games and during the County Tournament; a luncheon was given in April; Christmas cards were sold.

A beautiful Bicentennial ring was chosen by the Juniors as their class insignia.

Meetings of the Sophomore Class were held. bi-monthly and in addition to the regular business, good talks and musical numbers made up a part of the programs. The success of these meetings is due to the efforts of the Program Committee: John Sadowski, Dorothy Wheeler, Marjorie Hoegsted, and Elton Guiss.

A Class Constitution was formulated by Loretta Hayes, Weldon Wadleigh, Marjorie Topliff, Vearle Heinis, and Ruby Hahn.

The Sophomores initiated the Freshmen at the beginning of the year. Wayne Snader, Weldon Wadleigh, Loretta Hayes and Ruby Hahn were in charge of this initiation.

The students who represented the Sophomore Class for the decoration or the assembly at Christmas were Wilbur Damler, Edward Zajc, Wanda Troutman, and Darlene Outsen.

Ve-arle Heinis acted as one of the cheerleaders during the basketball season.

A Athrletic Committee, made up of Jerome Power, Edward Zajc, Leo Mathews, and Lionel Legris was appointed.

The Freshmen initiation very thoroughly and emphatically introduced the Freshmen to the Bradley High School student body.

Class meetings, which were held on the first and third Thursdays of every month at 8:35 A. M., were taken charge of by the president. Programs, consisting of readings, humorous selections, and biographies were given at each meeting. Much of the credit for the success of these programs goes to Alige Vickers, who was Chairwoman of the Program Committee.

During the second semester the class was divided into sections and the time for class meetings was devoted to the preparation of vocational booklets, which required a great deal of time and study of other vocations, avocations, scholastic training, etc. , and which enabled us to outline more definitely our life vocations.

This club was organized on October 14, 1931, with Miss Dooley as sponsor. Meetings were held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at seven-thirty in Room 14. At this meeting dues were voted upon and the amount of ten cents a month was accepted by all members.

The purpose of the club was to carry on a correspondence with other French students in other schools, with the aid of Miss Dooley, and to bring the French students in closer cooperation.

On one occasion the club had a breakfast in the Home Economics room and was enjoyed by all the pupils. Other activities of the club consisted of giving entertainments at the regular meetings.

The French II students prepared a newspaper which was published for the benefit of the French students.

The Girls' Glee Club, under the sponsorship of Miss D. Dooley, started out at the beginning of the school term with a bang. At first good attendance prevailed at every meeting held on Monday and Thursday. Later a few of the girls have dropped but there is still a fair attendance.

The Seniors have had the best attendance record throughout the school year. The Sophomores who have been faithful also, are not far behind. The freshmen girls must be timid yet, but some have shown a fine spirit and we hope more of them will come out next year.

The first meeting of the Commercial Club was held on October first, at which time the officers were elected.

A Constitution was written for the Commercial Club by the committee appointed by President Lund. The Constitution was passed upon by the members, and has now become a permanent part of the liturgy of the club.

During the first semester the Club members attended a program and tea-dance at the invitation of the Kankakee High School Commercial Club. This meeting was very inspirational and was an attempt at promoting a loyal spirit among commercial students of rival high schools.

During the second semester a breakfast was held in the Home Economics room. Much of the credit for the success of this breakfast goes to Adolf Leszczewicz, who Presided over the pancake batter, and Darlene Bade, who was in charge of the breakfast.

At the meetings, which were held on the first and third Thursdays of each month, programs consisting of songs, talks, readings, piano and orchestral selections, were given.

"The Gregg Writer", a shorthand magazine, wad added to the course by the advanced shorthand students, thus enabling them to improve and perfect their technique and knowledge in the writing and reading of shorthand. Each month the students had an opportunity to win certificates and pins for submitting work in shorthand and typing of a superior writ. The following students were awarded pins and certificates in shorthand and typing during the year.

Incidentally, about the first of April, twelve lively pupils of the Bradley High School favored the public with an exhibition of their talent in the play, "In Cherry Time".

A general distraction seized the High School, a week or two before the event of the showing; Del Marcotte could be heard anywhere practicing the Dutch dialect. Elinor Kammann could be seen or heard trying to be more like a negro woman and, I must say, she surely made a good one. Of course Wilbur was a little shy with his love-making but after a few practices he overcame his shyness. Darlene would try her haughty ways when she was in the hall or any time she got the chance. Lauretta could be soon parading around after Wayne, always a cold, haughty thing, grimly purposeful, and trying to got a little better in her part. Before the play, Ione surely acted her role as a little pest around the students.

After many instructions from the rest of the play cast, Randall did finally acquire the airs of a real collegiate. Larry Power could be caught in the act of bowing, so he could be well limbered up for the great event. Wayne and Opal could be seen in the gym practicing their little love scene which proved to be a big hit. Yvonne exhibited her hospitable ways to some of her fellow students. Leo Mailloux tried to be hard to everyone, as he was supposed to be a rather disagreeable person, but with his personality it was a rather hard task. The sponsors could be soon wildly tearing their hair, because of the impossibilities of everything in general,

An indoor tourney was held at Chebanse High School on October 9th and 10th. Bradley entered a team and won its first game 24 to 0. The next day it rained and the tournament was not completed.

Grant Park There

Bradley opened the basketball season at Grant Park, as usual. They returned with a victory of 21 to 20, which was quite unusual.

Reddick There

Reddick was the next victim falling before a powerful attack, the score being 41 to 10,

Chebanse Here

The basketball season at Bradley was opened when Bradley met Chebanse. After an exciting game the home team emerged with a victory--24 to 23.

Peotone There

In Peotone the Bradley team met their toughest opponent to date and finally won out 22 to 15 after a last quarter scoring spree.

St. Patrick's Here

St. Patrick's High School of Kankakee came out to Bradley and when they left were on the short end of a 36 to 9 score.

Donovan There

Bradley rolled up another large score at Donovan winning 5 to 12.

Manteno There

The breaks were not with the Bradley team at Manteno and they lost their first game despite the fact that they scored 35 points, the score being 39 to 35.

Braidwood Here

The following evening the Bradley team engaged a fast passing, hard driving team from Braidwood and beat them 29 to 14. It was the first game ever played between the two

Page 42: Dedication - bhsil.orgbhsil.org/people_places_folder/bradley_public_sch_images/bhs_1932_annual.pdfKavaney, now happily married to Ben Turpin Jr. and residing at Calexico, Mexico. At

Alumni

Bradley played the Alumni team for the cause of charity and were beaten 28-27 by a last minute basket by Toliuszis of last year's team.

Momence There When the team journeyed to Momence for their

last game before the holidays, they experienced a night when baskets were hard to get. At half-time Momence was leading 6 to 5. With but two minutes to go Bradley was leading 13 to 9. Then Momence scored three baskets and two free throws, to win 17 to 13.

St. Patrick's at Viator's Earlier in the season Bradley played St. Pat's

at Bradley and buried them under an avalanche of baskets at 36-9. However, when they mixed again at Viator's, St. Pat's took the lead immediately. Bradley put on a final spurt however and won 28 to 22.

Grant Park Here Grant Park, Bradley's old nemesis, came to Bradley

and after fighting bravely for half the game, they gave in, and Bradley won 29 to 19.

Herscher Here Herscher High, the only conquerors of Manteno,

came to Bradley expecting a victory. With but a few minutes to play they were leading 17 to 14. Bradley then dropped in a basket to cut the lead to one point. Another basket brought victory just as the game ended by a score of 18 to 17.

Reddick Here In their second engagement of the year with Bradley, Reddick High School was aided greatly by the return of two of three men who became eligible at the beginning of the second semester. Bradley was victorious with a score of 34 to 16.

Donovan Here In their last game before the County Tournament, Bradley turned back Donovan by a large margin, 39 to 19. 4 5

There are two more games for each team to play before the season ends. The winner of this League is to be awarded a nice cup.

Bradley vs. Peotone 4-2

Bradley started their baseball season in very poor form. They lost the first game of the season. The game was closely fought all the way through. LeMaster was the losing pitcher due to so many errors from his teammates.

Bradley vs. Manteno 8-6

Bradley was getting back in form and working hard at this game. Manteno always has been hard for Bradley. Bradley out-classed them and won the game in two extra innings. Hubert got his first home run of the season in the first inning.

Bradley vs. Grant Park 13-2

Grant Park did not seem to furnish so such competition as they had in other years. During this game they used thee pitchers, while Bradley used two, LeMaster being the winning pitcher. In this game Hubert caught hold of another one that should have been a home run, but he missed second base and was put out.

Bradley vs. Grant Park 7-5

This day Grant Park surprised the Bradley boys and got in five runs in the second inning off of Chartier. Then Le-Master came to the mound and pitched the remaining five innings without giving them a hit. Bradley was able to accumulate seven runs in the time to come out ahead. Senesac carried honors this day, having three hits out of four times to the plate.

Bradley vs. Manteno 5-0

With the good pitching of LeMaster the Manteno nine went down for the second defeat of the season from Bradley. The Bradley boys displayed some wonderful ball in this game, and were able to defeat the Manteno boys 5-0.

The Peotone boys come to Bradley next week. Bradley has lost their only game to these boys. If Bradley can come thru victorious in this game, they will be tied for first place with them.

History of The Bradley School. The history of our school is closely interwoven with

every step of our city's progress, in fact it is the prime factor in this progress. Years ago, the pioneer residents of Bradley realized the absolute need of educational facilities and with great foresight established our school, which has grown into the institution we know and love today. How forcibly the good that is being done by our school is brought to our minds by the fact that the Class of 1932 is the largest class yet to step forth from these portals into the world.

The first school ever established in Bradley was a private school which was conducted in the old Graveline Buildng. Al Seaman, who in 1915 moved to New York, founded this school and conducted a class for a few years.

In 1890 the public school was located in Bourbonnais. Bradley was a part of this district, but in 1893 Charles Wertz and Edward Shumaker became active in an effort to establish a Bradley school. These efforts met with success and the Bradley School District was organized in 1893 with Charles Wertz, Edward Shumaker, and John Lanig, acting as directors. Mr. Wertz acted as President of the Board of Di-rectors, which office he held until the school came under the management of the Board of Education in 1902. Mr. Wertz also acted as President of the Board of Education and the following members were selected: Edward Shumaker, W. D.Stith, John Lanig, William Schreffler, Z. Bowdle, and Harry King.

The next year, 1903, Frank Galbraith was selected as President of the Board and since that date the line of succession as president has been as follows:

1904 - John Tighe 1905 - F. B. Miller 1906 - F. B. Miller 1907 - Sam Bilyard 1908 - E. L. Martin 1909 - E. L. Martin 1910 - E. L. Martin 1911 - Arthur LeClair 1912 - E. J. Stelter 1913 - Frank Begnoche 1914 - Frank Begnoche 1915 - Frank Begnoche 1916 - Frank Begnoche

The first teachers in the new school were Miss Gil-Bourne, Miss Dievelbliss, and Miss Anna Lanig, who succeeded Miss Gilbourne.

This first school was held in an old store building on Washington Avenue, south of Broadway, and when this building was moved to Bourbonnais the school was held in the M. E. Church building. Later, the bottom floor of the Woodman Building was used, until the old building -- which is still a part of the present school building and which was composed of four rooms -- was erected in 1894 by F. L. Galbraith and Ed-ward Shumaker. In 1898 the frame building was altered by an addition, erected by John Moroff. In 1911, Mr. Moroff built the first brick building. The large brick addition, which increased the building to its present size, was built by Mr. Galbraith in 1913.

The first high school was started in 1898 by Professor Sutton. After the graduation of the Classes of 1901, 1902, and 1903, the high school was discontinued and the school again became an eighth grade school. When Professor Hartleb took charge of the school in 1908, he immediately recognized the need of this higher branch and, with the determination that characterized his every action, set about supplying this need, with the result that the high school was again estabLished in 1909. True enough, the first year but two pupils availed themselves of this opportunity, but the worth of the school soon became so apparent that by the year 1914 the enrollment in the high school had reached 62; in 1915 it dropped back to 48. The present enrollment in the high School is 143. The enrollment in the grades has increased from 325 in 1909 to 434 in 1932.

Although the school has been in existence for nearly forty-three years, there have been only eight principals in charge. They are as follows:

1893-1902 - Professor Sutton 1902-1903 - Professor Leachman 1903-1908 - Professor Brewster 1908-1917 - Professor Hartleb 1917-1922 - Professor Robinson 1922-1925 - Professor McDougall 1925-1928 - Professor Wieland 1928-1932 - Professor Welker

Professor Hartleb and those teachers who served with him have to be praised for their good work. By hard, persistent labor and harmonious work they brought our school out of the "little red schoolhouse" class up to a high state of effi-ciency. Since that time the professors in charge have added still more to the school's progress and betterment, which fact was made more apparent when the high school was accredi-ted on March 2, 1928.

Such men as Wertz, Shumaker, Lanig, Schreffler, and Gal-braith must not be forgotten. These pioneers made it possible for an educational institution of this kind to secure a foothold and to advance through the wilderness of opposittn toward the spread of civilization and progress.

Likewise, credit goes to such men as Begnoche, Reincke, Mulligan, Fister, Peschel, and Bellmore, who were responsible for seeing that the school was supplied with the materials necessary to its high state of efficiency and who placed the teachers.

At the present time certain extra-curricular activities within the school claim a fair amount of attention. Clubs have been organized and have broadened the students' knowl-edge along those lines for which they were expressly organ-ized. Thus, cooperation and interest in the school have be-come more centralized and magnified. Examples of such or-ganizations are The Glee Club, The Commercial Club, The French Club, The Latin Club, The Peppy Preps (Girls' physi- cal Education organization), The "B" Club. Athletics, too have reached a high standard as evidenced by the fact that in 1932 Bradley High realized its first District Basketball Championship.

Alumni Association

On the first Thursday of September the Bradley Highs School Alumni Association met to begin its second year's work. The following officers were elected:

Earle G. LaGesse --------- president Edward Drassler ----- Vice-President Rita McGovern - - - - Secretary-Treasurer Everell Monty ----- Sergeant-at-Arms

A program for the ensuing year was planned, including the following:

October 28- - ------- Halloween Lance February 29 - ---------- Alumni Party May 5 and 6 - - - Play, "Up In The Air" May 28 ------- Senior-Alumni Banquet

The Halloween Dance was rather poorly attended but with the aid of the Illini Nightingales, those present were able to enjoy a good evening of dancing.

The Alumni Party was held at the Bird's Park Clubhouse with quite a large number of people from Bradley and Chicago attending.

The Alumni Play "Up In The Air", was staged May 5-6 in the high school gymnasium. This production was a great suc-cess, equaling last year's play "Page The Prince".

The Seniors were guests of the Alumni Association at the second annual Alumni banquet in the Gold Room of the Hotel Kankakee on Malay 28, A large crowd attended this most im- portant function of the year.

The year 1931-32 has been quite a successful year, con-sidering that this is but the second year since the founding of the Association.

The members who were taken into the Association last year were: Gladys Brockman, Evelyn Lund, Ilene MCleary, Florence Styck, Laura Hasemeyer, Earl Stoltz, Howard Hoeg-sted, John Smietanski, Harold Ott, and Paul Toliuszis.

The members of the Class of 1932 will all be eligible for membership in the Association this year.
