Welcome to the Déda brochure of classes andperformances for Winter and Spring 2013.

Before we move into the New Year, Déda can lookback on a phenomenally successful 2012.

Games Time was a project which was led by oursister company, Déda|Producing. As part ofLondon Festival 2012 Games Time was seen by an estimated audience of 46,000 over four shows, culminating in a performance on DarleyPark as the finale of another successful DerbyFesté weekend.

Déda|Producing’s new project, Elemental Force, isa large scale outdoor show which celebrates therich history of the region, including the IndustrialRevolution and The Silk Mill (see page 19).

Following the successful presentation of ArthurPita’s God’s Garden in September last year, we’rehappy to bring another phenomenal danceperformance to the stage of Derby Theatre. In March, National Dance Company Walespresent a triple bill featuring Dream, a tribute to the 2012 Olympic Games choreographed by ex-Artistic Director of the Rambert DanceCompany, Christopher Bruce.

This performance will form part of a week ofdance at Derby Theatre, also featuring our annual

showcase Interface which presents the bestYouth Dance companies from our region.

Look inside for other fantastic shows in theDéda Theatre, including performances fromWendy Houstoun and Retina Dance Company,alongside regular Jazz gigs, Burlesque eventsand a programme of family shows thatprovide the perfect introduction to theatre for little ones.

We’re also delighted to be welcoming MaisonFoo back to Déda. Since being the firstcompany in residence on the Déda|Artistscheme they have gone from strength tostrength, so see what they have planned nextas they preview their new show in March.

‘Here I am!’

Tom stays one tiny step ahead of everyoneto save his brothers from mum, dad and the monster. With feathery spinning birds, a scary ogre head, flying fiery houses and a portable forest this original show,performed entirely on a kitchen table, is a wee wonder.

It’s a story about being afraid, it’s a storyabout being hungry.

It’s also a story about playing and havingfun, which Tom does better than anybody.

Pictures We Make asks questions about therelationship we have with ourselves andwith other people. As we plunge from “I” to “we”, our insecurities and perceptionsabout how things should be are tested andreflected back by those with whom we share relationships.

Sourced from stories and experiences fromthe long shared history of the performers,this new creation by Missen and Turnerbrings together four exceptional performers,with an original score by Spanish musicianand composer Miguel Marin.

Elemental ForcePresented by Déda|Producing

Building on the themes that made theOpening Ceremony of the London 2012Olympic and Paralympic Games so memorable,Elemental Force captures the drama andexcitement of our region's past, present and future.

Cathedral Green will be transformed for theevening. Audiences will find themselvessurrounded by flickering trails and fire-basedinstallations and will have the chance toexplore their surroundings before the mainevent. A huge projection on to the side of theSilk Mill – one of Derby’s most iconic buildings– will appear and tell the rich story of the areathrough film, music, fireworks and with aerialdancers suspended high in the evening sky.

Refugees of the Septic Heart reflects the heartbeatof a nation as it perches on the brink of change.

At times philosophical and provocative, fivedancers search for a society freed of greed,manipulation and control. Gritty physicality anddecaying urban sounds evolve into an optimisticundercurrent of mischievous, spirited andirrepressible movement.

Inspired by the hypnotic melodies of Shackleton,with words from Vengeance Tenfold and digitalanimation from Barret Hodgson, Tom Dale brings together a dynamic team of artists torealise a moody and abstract performance forcurious people.

House choreographer Eleesha Drennanpresents her latest work with a newlycommissioned percussion concerto from BBC National Orchestra of Wales’ residentcomposer Mark Bowden.

CorporalisPresented by Retina Dance Company

Following last year’s sell out performance of Layers of Skin, Retina Dance Companyreturns with Corporalis.

Retina has worked with Belgian architecturalcollective Ruimtevaarders to create anenvironment for dancers. This unique spaceof colour, texture and sound builds a worldthat contains Retina’s trademark physicality,evolving through a ‘performance meetsinstallation’ experience.

Choreographer Filip Van Huffel explores the relationship between personal space,architectural space and three-dimensionalspace; the awareness of our body and itsrelationship to the environment.


50 ActsWritten and performed by Wendy Houstoun

50 Acts is a spirited retaliation against ageism and other modern rubbish involvingmanifestos, songs, apologies and errors, and much, much more.

Wendy Houstoun has become a mentor androle-model for a generation of artists, havingpreviously collaborated with Nigel Charnock,Rose English, and Matteo Fargion.

Wendy now brings her own brand of radicalismto 50 Acts, a declaration of intent and acommitment to action.

A2 Drama and TheatreStudies PerformancePresented by Derby College

A night of engaging and original dramaticwork created by A2 Drama and Theatre Studiesstudents from the Joseph Wright Centre.

The students have been creating devised work from different stimuli, having beengiven different theatrical practitioners onwhom to base their work.

The result will be two highly original andengaging pieces of theatre that will showcasethe creative talents of the students.

Joe McKennaJoe McKenna’s work is loosely based on theindustrial aesthetic in contrast with itsnatural surroundings, reflecting the concernof early Romantic era painters as well as thecoincidental beauty of the modern and theman-made in its invasive and alien presence.

This contrast in texture and pattern producesan abstract and surreal set of landscapes.

Based on the notion of opposites, McKennaattempts to connote the equal harshness ofboth nature and man-made structures byplacing them side by side below a shroud of beautiful and foreboding cloudscapes.

FORMAT is one of the UK’s leading festivals ofphotography, organised by QUAD in partner -ship with the University of Derby.

The main theme of FORMAT13 centres on theFACTORY and mass production, approachedliterally and creatively in terms of process andthe transformation of material, live site ofproduction, products, workers and their lives,analogue process, documentary and more.

We are delighted to present six FORMATEXPOSURE artists at Déda : Ken Grant, No PainWhatsoever; Moira Lovell, We Still Stand; LizMurray, The Bohemians; David Shepherd,Discarded; Clay Smith, The Dystopian Familyand Toby Smith, Scotland.

The resonance of button accordion and tenorsaxophone is a rare and beautiful sonority.

In the hands of these two musicians it is acombination capable of a great range ofmoods and textures, at times showing greatdexterity, alternately full and rich andseemingly far larger than the sum of itsconstituent parts.

The repertoire – which ranges from Chopin,Satie and Kurt Weil through to classic jazzstandards, original works, tangos andchildren’s songs – makes a rich and diverseprogramme rarely heard before in a new andimaginative setting.

Derby Jazz Jamswith Rampage Brass Band and Jazz Foyer

This season of Jazz Jams features theRampage Brass Band under the direction of trumpeter Jef Brown and Jazz Foyer,mentored by pianist Matt Ratcliffe. Mattand Jef will be on hand to offer an open doorto musicians, including singers, who want tocome and showcase their tunes or just jam.
