He was apprenticed tohis uncle Thomas Martin Randalland painted at the Rockinghamfactory before joining Coalport in1835. His earlier work tended tofeature exotic birds, but in the

1860s he began to paint morenaturalistic studies, often birds ofprey in their natural surroundings.In addition to his work atCoalport, he was a botanist,geologist, published localhistorian and journalist, starting alocal newspaper, as well asserving as a postmaster and aborough councillor. The'Tericos', mercenaries in theservice of the Spanishauthorities, had not been paid,following Spain's declaration ofbankruptcy. Their consequentrampage through Antwerp inNovember saw three days ofhorror: the massacre of over2500 citizens as the Tericoslooted and burnt countlessbuildings, including themagnificent Town Hall. In Augustthe following year aNetherlandish coalition overthrewthe Spanish troops in the Citadeland it was subsequentlydemolished by the citizenry, asshown in the present roundel. Five of the subjects, includingthis scene, are derived fromengravings by the Wierix brothersafter drawings by Martin de Vos(1532-1603). Four of thedrawings can be found in theAshmolean at Oxford and one atthe Metropolitan in New York. The fine detail and modelling ofthe figures on this series ofcircular plaquettes has led to the

the country dependent on oneman or to give one man suchvast patronage. In 1807 SirJames Pulteney, then secretaryfor war, established the office ofstorekeeper-general, givingTrotter the first nomination to thepost and taking into service allhis employees. In 1815 Trotterestablished the Soho bazaarbetween Soho Square andOxford Street. Intended at first toenable the distressed widowsand daughters of army officers todispose economically of theirhome 'work' by renting a few feetof counter, the bazaar eventuallyproved a source of wealth to itspromoter. He was a man of manyschemes, some of which led tofortune; others died in theirinfancy, including one for theestablishment of a universallanguage.
