Reynolds was bornin 1926 and was brought up inNewmarket in Suffolk. The locallandscape and the work ofGainsborough and Constablewere important influences, especially in his earlier landscapecompositions. He studied first atthe Woolwich Polytechnic Schoolof Art and then obtained ascholarship to the Royal Collegeof Art. During his time at theRoyal College, he exhibited atthe Redfern Gallery, and onleaving college he took upteaching at the Central School ofArts and Crafts. There aredistinct phases within Reynolds'career and the present work is anexample of the shift betweenfigurative landscape and purewhite relief. The 1950s hadbrought critical acclaim for hisfigurative landscapes at theRedfern exhibitions, but asMichael Harrison comments, thelate 1950s and early 60s saw the'confirmation of his move towardscomposition based on the playbetween vertical and horizontal, what he came to see as ouressential relationship withlandscape', and thereforetowards the more structural, suchas this example, taking on'geometric forms, at first includingcircular shapes, sometimes withblack or primary colours, andthen purely rectilinear andeventually just white'. Lot: 327LOTS 327-339 DAVID CARR(1915-1968) The painter andcollector, David Carr, has beendescribed as 'a lost genius in thecanon of Post-War British Artists,a pioneering creator whosucceeded in his quest to paintman's epic struggle for individualidentity'. He was born to awealthy family in London in 1915who owned the biscuitmanufacturing business of thesame name. He was educated atUppingham and began hisworking career at the family firmwhere his father was chairman, but he hated the commercialworld and left to read History atOxford. In the 1950s, Carrbegan a remarkable series ofworks depicting man'srelationship with machines andindustrial production, exploringthe blurred line between therepetitive movements of workingmen and the machines theytended. These visionary works,in a Post-Cubist style, are Carr'slasting legacy and convey hisidiosyncratic view of mid-20thCentury Britain. In 1968, theBertha Shayer Gallery in NewYork staged an exhibition of his

paintings, but it was not until1987, nineteen years after Carr'spremature death from cancer, that he came to real prominencein London. This was when theMayor Gallery held aretrospective of the work of theman that Bryan Robertson called'Â…of special importance to BritishArt of this period'. A furtherretrospective exhibition was heldin London in 1997 at the AustinDesmond Gallery. *David Carr(1915-1968), MONOCHROMEABSTRACT FORMS two, 91.5 x71.5cm, unframed; and an oil onboard 75.5 x 58cm, framed (3) *Artist's resale rights may applyto this lot.Estimate: £300.00 - £400.00

It has provedimpossible to trace theprovenance of these beyondc.1920, but, apart from theirdimensions, the only differences[from the Argyle Street examples]are that the backrail is attachedto the rear uprights by pinsthrough the face of the upright, and that the seats are cut out atthe rear corners to accommodatethe uprights. I have reached nodefinite conclusion about thesechairs, but they are at the veryleast extremely faithful, albeitsmaller, facsimiles'. As Marsh,Jones, Cribb & Co. only tradedunder that name between 1897and 1904, these chairs must becontemporaneous, or very nearlyso, with those made for ArgyleStreet Tea Rooms. Literature:For a discussion of these chairs, see Roger Billcliffe, 'CharlesRennie Mackintosh, TheComplete Furniture, FurnitureDrawings and Interior Designs,Guildford and London', 1979,pp.47-48.
