A renowned drinker, gambler and lover, Harry Allen

was born in Indiana in 1882. Allen held a variety of jobs—a longshoreman, bartender, and earned money as a prize fighter. During his many arrests, police tried to force Allen, a trans man, to wear skirts.

He refused, saying, “I did not like to be a girl, I did not feel like a girl and never looked like a girl.”

Actor Kian J. Johnson, who portrays Allen in a new play, No Pants in Tucson, said he could relate to those words.

“I think Harry Allen was one of the reasons I was brought onto this project,” he said. “I think Melissa was looking for a trans man to accurately represent this person in their entirety.”

Most of the laws were old, and struck from the books. “Some were more on the ridiculous side,” said Moschitto.

Unmarried women could not parachute on Sundays in Florida. But most of the old laws had to do with what women could and could not wear or what they could do with their bodies. Legally, women in Carmel, California still can’t wear high heels, which can be circumvented by applying for a permit. Up until 2019, North Carolina was the only state that ruled women could not legally withdraw consent after a sex act began, which effectively meant that a man could not be charged with rape if a woman changed her mind.

True to their name, members of the Anthropologists tracked down the original ordinances.

The play’s title came from an 1883 ordinance that was a broader law that prohibited cross-dressing values, and “masquerading” as the opposite sex. The legalese reflects 1800’s values, but the language’s net effect, said Moschitto, was a weaponization against people who didn’t fit into narrowly gender defined roles.

“It has a kind of mundane language, like morally indecent, so you’re left with questions about what is the definition of immoral and indecent—and who is defining that,” she said.

Miriam Raccah, Executive Director of Bronx Charter School for the Arts, said classroom and full-building shutdowns that have plagued public and charter schools throughout the pandemic have been disruptive to the growth of students.

“Kids really need to be in school. It’s part of their development. It’s how they learn to get along with each other. It’s how they learn to learn,” said Raccah.

“When disruptions happen because there’s a case of Covid, it’s that start-and-stop thing that’s really hard for them, and for us,” she said.

“This vaccine for 5- to 11-year-olds is one more critical piece of the puzzle for making sure we don’t have a repeat or anything close to a repeat” of the level of disruptions seen in 2020, said James Merriman, Chief Executive Officer of the New York City Charter Center.

As our country emerges from the longest war in its history,

the 4.5 million veterans who served during this period are poised to lead our workforce – and the U.S. economy – into the next decades.

This group of talented Americans, known as the post-9/11 veterans, have channeled their talent, skills and leadership into post-military success, achieving higher labor participation rates and over 30 percent higher earnings than their non-veteran peers, according to the Census Bureau.

Veterans have proven themselves to be extremely productive, often earning promotions at an accelerated rate in their chosen career fields and recognized by industry leaders as valuable teammates.

This newest generation of dedicated Americans is a formidable group. They are the youngest, most diverse and largest group of veterans in the labor force. Like the legions of veterans who served in the past, they have carried on a legacy of duty, valor and compassion. Our post-9/11 veterans have fought bravely in defense of our values, but they have also demonstrated remarkable resilience and

adaptability, pivoting to support missions ranging from humanitarian assistance to local economic development. Needless to say, they performed admirably.

While in uniform, veterans benefitted not just from world-class technical training, but also from extraordinary opportunities to develop soft skills such as teamwork,

resourcefulness and initiative, traits that employers consistently rank as among the most desirable. Hiring veterans is not just the right thing to do - it is a smart business decision.

As a post-9/11 veteran and former senior Defense Department official, I have seen firsthand the sacrifices borne by service

members, veterans and their families. Many carry with them the wounds of combat – visible and invisible – and grieve the irreplaceable loss of their teammates. We have made great progress towards ensuring that all who need care get it, acknowledging that much work remains to be done.

And while support for our wounded, ill and injured veterans remains steadfast, we should simultaneously promote career opportunities and a workplace environment that allows all veterans to thrive. They are a vital component of our labor force and will continue to play a critical role driving innovation and efficiency.

As in every war throughout our history, a generation of Americans stepped forward to answer this most recent call to serve.

Now, as our nation moves forward, our post-9/11 veterans stand ready to “build back better” through meaningful careers.

On this Veterans Day, we celebrate all veterans, not just for their service while in uniform, but also for their ongoing contributions to the world’s most talented workforce.

Democrat Eric Adams cruised to victory in the general

election on Tuesday night to become the second Black mayor in New York City history.

As expected, the Brooklyn Borough President easily defeated Republican challenger Curtis Sliwa with 66 percent of the vote.

“Tonight, I have accomplished my dream,” Adams said at a victory party in Brooklyn. “And with all my heart, I’m going to remove the barriers that are preventing you from accomplishing yours.”

Sliwa, founder of the volunteer anti-crime watchdog group Guardian Angels, garnered 28 percent of the vote.

Adams will replace Bill de Blasio, who served for eight years, in January.

A former State Senator and police officer, Adams campaigned on a platform of reducing gun violence and bolstering public safety, while touting ways he would help the city’s residents recover from the pandemic.

“I’m not going to be a philosophical mayor. I’m going to be a mayor that’s going to be a GSD mayor — get stuff done,” Adams said during various post-election interviews on Wednesday.

Mark Levine was elected Manhattan Borough President, with a lopsided victory over Republican Louis Puliafito and independent Michael Lewyn. Levine, currently a City Councilmember, received more than 87 percent of votes.

Incumbent Jumaane Williams was elected for another term as Public Advocate with 66 percent of the vote.

In the race for City Comptroller, Democrat Brad Lander won with 68 percent of the votes.

Democrat Alvin Bragg made history, becoming Manhattan’s first Black District Attorney. Bragg easily defeated Republican candidate Thomas Kenniff with 83 percent of votes.

“The fundamental role of a district attorney is to guarantee both fairness and safety. That is the trust that’s been

given to me on the ballot, but given to all of us, that’s what we’ve worked for, to show the city and the country a model for pairing partnership, pairing fairness and safety into one,” Bragg said.

The general election also included several City Council races for Northern Manhattan.

In District 7, Democrat Shaun Abreu won the Council seat with 89 percent of the votes. A tenant rights attorney, Abreu made housing insecurity a central focus of his campaign.

An author and activist, Jordan surprised many New Yorkers by emerging from a crowded field to narrowly defeat incumbent Bill Perkins in the June primary — a race that required a recount.

Carmen De La Rosa won the Council seat for District 10, which includes Inwood, Washington Heights and Marble Hill. Currently a State Assemblymember, De La Rosa earned 86 percent of the votes to defeat challenger Edwin De La Cruz.

De La Rosa is among 31 women to be elected to the City Council on Tuesday.

City University of New York (CUNY) leaders and elected officials gathered in Inwood on October 29 to celebrate the reopening of CUNY in the Heights after a major expansion project.

The new-look campus at 5030 Broadway was unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony, where officials touted the school’s potential to bolster academic and career advancement opportunities for residents of Inwood, Washington Heights and the Bronx.

“It’s transformative, what this represents in this neighborhood for possibility,” said Ingrid Renderos, Director of CUNY in the Heights.

Run by Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), CUNY in the Heights opened its facility at 5030 Broadway in September 2012 and provides an array of general education courses, English classes and specialized training for phlebotomists, security officers and OSHA certification. It also hosts various community events.

He’s gone from toys to torn up.

Carlos Deschamps has always been fond of storytelling.

As a young child, the Washington Heights native would conjure up narratives in his imagination and bring them to life using his toy collection.

“I always played with a bag of toys from McDonald’s or Burger King. I would spend hours creating stories in my head and act it out with the toys,” Deschamps said. “It’s always been something I’m drawn to.”

Deschamps has transformed his love of storytelling into filmmaking. His latest venture, a short film titled The Night of Their Breakup, is one of four film projects to receive a grant through the 2021 Inwood Film Festival (IFF) Filmmaker Fund.

Conducted by Inwood Art Works, the annual program issues monetary grants to local filmmakers to help bring their projects to fruition.

“People can see that there’s untapped potential right in the neighborhood,” said Deschamps. “I think there should be more Latinx representation in filmmaking and this helps support that.”

This year, the IFF Filmmaker Fund will bestow four filmmakers with grants of up to $5,000 to be used for film project expenses.

To be eligible for the grant, filmmakers must be residents of Inwood or the surrounding neighborhoods.

While it is not required, stories that are rooted in the culture or history of the area are given preference.

Upon the conclusion of the projects, the films will be automatically submitted to the selection committee for the 6th Annual Inwood Film Festival, which will be held in 2022.

“With these grants, Inwood Art Works is giving a chance to people who wouldn’t normally have this opportunity,” Baker said. “These are films that might not get made otherwise.”

For Baker, who typically works as a lighting designer, filmmaking is a relatively new endeavor.

His project, The Locals, is a short documentary film that depicts the longtime

friendship of two women who have lived in Inwood since 1974.

“They’ve witnessed so many changes in the neighborhood in that time. They’re full of history,” Baker said.

The documentary, which began filming in the summer, will follow the women during a full year, showing them interacting at home and throughout the neighborhood.

“They have these incredible stories,” said Baker. “We live in a time when

so much has been lost, and I think it’s important that we preserve these stories and our community’s history as much as possible.”

Deschamps’ new film focuses on the breakup between a boyfriend and girlfriend, as well the boyfriend’s best friend who ends up comforting the girl.

“I love telling stories about relationships. I love to explore the whole ‘what if’ aspect,” said Deschamps, who has directed several short films previously, including The Choice, which was screened at a previous Inwood Film Festival.

“I like to surprise the audience – I like to take them down one path, but in the end it’s something totally unexpected,” he said of his filmmaking style.

With the script for The Night of Their Breakup nearly completed, Deschamps is now casting for the film and plans to begin shooting early next year.

“It’s exciting because we’ve been stuck at home due to the pandemic. It’s been a while since I’ve taken a camera and filmed stuff,” he said.

“The pandemic slowed things down, but it was also a blessing that it let me work on my own plans. I’ve been writing a lot,” he added.

Bonilla, a native of the Dominican Republic, is currently finishing the script for her grant-winning project, titled I Am Poem.

The film will tell the story of a 10-year-old Latinx boy who reveals his true gender identity to his father, while his mother remains in denial of her son’s truth.

“It’s based on a true story of a child that I know,” said Bonilla, a resident of Washington Heights.

She said was inspired to create the film because she perceives a lack of support for the LGBTQ community in her neighborhood.

“It’s very important for me to tell this

story,” remarked Bonilla, who received a master’s degree in mental health counseling last year. “I am going to be an advocate. I’ve been reaching out to LGBTQ organizations to see how they can incorporate the film into [their work].”

Her previous film, La Entreviu, won third place at the Dominican Film Festival in 2018.

“Hay tantos grandes festivales de cine y puede ser abrumador intentar que tu película sea exhibida ahí”, dijo Bonilla. “Lo bueno del Festival de Cine de Inwood es que es más conciso y es para nuestra comunidad. Creo que es extremadamente importante que estas subvenciones vayan a personas locales”.

Aquino recibió una subvención del Fondo para Cineastas del IFF para ayudar a completar su proyecto Secadora, un cortometraje que explora la identidad, el sexo y la raza en la cultura dominicana.

“El mensaje que quiero dar es la importancia de la tolerancia y la paciencia”, dijo. “La intolerancia es tan frecuente en estos días y puede terminar una relación muy rápido. Con nuestra generación, la cultura de la cancelación es muy fuerte”.

“Through our outreach team, we’ve been able to reach many families who otherwise would not have gotten vaccinated and we intend to do the same with children,” explained Kim, who said the school had a target goal of vaccinating more than 80 percent of its students.

Nauiokas said that Mott Haven Academy has worked with community partners to offer vaccinations at their school building.

“We did this through the spring and will continue to do it through winter, and

will encourage families to bring in the 5- to 11-year-olds as the vaccine gets authorized,” she said. “What we usually find is that because we have relationships with parents, when the vaccines are given from our building, parents have a slightly more relaxed stance around accepting it.”

“There is so much misinformation about the safety of the Covid vaccine in the public sphere. It’s truly unfortunate the vaccine has become a political flashpoint because people are dying as a result of misinformation promulgated by extreme viewpoints,” Kim said. “Schools have a critically important role to play in bringing accurate facts to people.”

Heights-based pediatrician, said it was important to provide younger children with the vaccine because children under 12 are one of the drivers of new coronavirus cases.

“The ones that bring the virus to the house are actually the smaller ones that infect the vulnerable family members who live at home,” he said.

Tapia-Mendoza expressed concern that only 44 percent of young people ages 12 to 18 have received at least one dose of a Covid vaccine.

He encouraged community partnerships with pediatricians to help boost Covid vaccination rates in young people.

“More than half of all immunizations given in the United States are given in doctor’s private offices, and when a patient takes his kid to the pediatricians, they can deal with other issues that they might have,” Tapia-Mendoza said.

Charter schools have had an often-contentious relationship with the de Blasio administration, as a group of charters sued the city last year for being left out of the weekly Covid-19 testing program.

“You’d think that of all things, they wouldn’t have played politics with that,” remarked Merriman. “But we had to sue the city to get them to do the same amount of testing. We shouldn’t have had to waste our time and go to court.”

“We’d like the spirit of cooperation and partnership that we’re all in this together. Unfortunately, that hasn’t necessarily been

the message that we’ve received from City Hall,” he added.

Kim called on the next mayor – Eric Adams – to have a better relationship with charter schools and help ensure their students can get the Covid vaccine.

“We’d like to see the mayor push to provide [charter] schools with the capacity to have vaccine clinics at their school, mobile trucks, whatever the case may be,” she said. “[Anything] to ensure that children have access to their vaccine at school.”

CUNY Chancellor Félix Matos-Rodríguez recalled attending the site’s original ribbon cutting in 2013, while he served as President of Hostos Community College.

“I’m proud of this space,” he remarked. “It shows the history of CUNY being responsive to the community — the educational needs, the cultural needs — this is one example of that.”

“Our colleges are anchor institutions all over the city,” he added.

Monroe noted that CUNY in Heights has partnered with a nearby pharmacy to connect people with Covid-19 vaccinations. The school also runs a food pantry every Tuesday to provide free bags of food to local residents.

“We will continue to do more to bring

resources and services to those in need,” he said.

Congressman Adriano Espaillat pointed out that CUNY in the Heights’ original headquarters was located at Good Shepherd School in Inwood.

“[That] space was not the best space,” remarked Espaillat, who said he helped find the school a new location on Broadway and provided $2.7 million while a State Senator to create the campus.

“There are so many large film festivals and it can be overwhelming to try to get your film shown there,” Bonilla said. “What’s great about the Inwood Film Festival is it’s more concise and it’s for our community. I think it’s extremely crucial that these grants are going to people who are local.”

Aquino received an IFF Filmmaker Fund grant to help complete her project Secadora, a short film that explores identity, sex and race in the Dominican culture.

“The message I want to give is the importance of tolerance and patience,” she said. “Intolerance is so prevalent these days and it can end a relationship really quickly. With our generation, cancel culture is super strong.”

Shot in one location with a two-person cast, filming for Secadora has already been completed. Aquino said she will use her grant money to hire a post-production editor.

A director of photography (known as a “DP”) for a major publishing company, Aquino said she was inspired to make her own independent film.

“As a woman of color, I’ve always felt very isolated in the workspace,” she said. “Being a DP, I didn’t see a lot of people who looked like me.”

Recently, Aquino formed her own

production company, focused on empowering women both behind and in front of the camera.

“I think the value of being recognized by your own community is really meaningful,” she said of her IFF Filmmaker Fund grant. “It gives me that push to do more and make even more art.”
