OK, none of the above is actually going tohappen any time soon, unfortunately. Whilemany retailers and suppliers will not be sadto see the back of 2012, the situation in 2013is likely to carry on where 2012 leaves off.

According to estate agent Jones LangLaSalle, the UK housing market is expectedto make steady progress throughout 2013with accelerated growth from 2014 onwards.Following a period of restrained growth in2012, UK housing transactions will hit onemillion for the first time since 2007 withmortgage lending levels rising to 650,000new loans, it predicts.

A million sounds good but the marketpeaked in 2006 with 1.67million transactions,

and an average of 1.43million between 1998and 2007. The company also predicts thathouse prices outside London and the SouthEast of England will only rise by 1%.

But 2012 has seen some winners. JohnLewis seems to attract new customers everyweek and independent furniture and flooringretailers have had a much better time thanhad been feared.

The link between the two has beenoffering the consumer products they want ata time they want, customer service andreputation. A tried and tested formula, butone that is as relevant today as ever. Withhousehold name retailers such as Cometcollapsing, people are increasingly going tolocal stores they know and have probablyshopped at before.

This issue marks our fifth anniversary and everyone at Interiors Monthly would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, contributors and suppliers for all you havedone. It certainly doesn’t feel like that longsince I wrote the first of these columns inDecember 2007.

We’d also like to wish you a MerryChristmas and a Happy New Year and, ofcourse, a good winter sale.

A booming housingmarket and a major upliftin consumer confidencewill see shoppers flockingback to stores as if therecession was all a dream.

John Lewiscalls for actionon tax havens Andy Street, John Lewis md, haswarned that Amazon would ‘out-invest’and ‘out-trade’ British companies if theGovernment does not take action toforce the online retailer to pay tax fairlyin Britain.

‘There is less money to invest if youare giving 27% of your profits to theExchequer,’ he says.

‘Clearly, if you are domiciled in a tax haven you’ve got much moremoney. They [Amazon] will out-investand ultimately out-trade us. And thatmeans there will not be a tax base inthe UK.’

Meanwhile, John Lewis’s expansion ofits At Home chain has continued withthe opening of the first joint AtHome/Waitrose branch, in Ipswich.

Although there are two distinctstores, they share many of the backoffice functions and eventually staff are likely to work between the twostores.

UK sales rise proves to bethe bright spot for NatuzziThe UK has proved positive forupholstery company Natuzzi, increasing sales by 3.6% in the face ofdeclining sales of its Natuzzi Italiabrand and a switch to lower pricedbrands, such as Editions and ownlabel, in other countries.

The company says overall NatuzziItalia sales dropped by 13.7% in Q3and by 23.1% for the nine monthperiod.

Other brands rose by 3.8% and10.8% respectively.

Overall upholstery sales dropped by2.2% to €97.5m (£78.8m) with priceincreases and exchange ratemovements failing to offset a drop inseat numbers and the lower sales mix.

While it was unable to return to the

black, earnings before interest andtaxation losses were cut from €8.9m(£7.19m) in Q3 last year to €2.35m(£1.9m).

‘We are not fully pleased with thequarterly operating result,’ saysPasquale Natuzzi, Natuzzi executivechairman.

‘The difficult global scenario of thelast few years has inexorably changedthe way of doing business, especiallyfor global players as we are. We see, infact, that consumers’ preferences arechanging, favouring mainly mediumto low end products, and that thegeographical distribution of thedemand has been witnessing anincrease in the weight of emergingmarkets,’ he adds. The sales mix was lower

Betta Living boosts websiteFitted furniture chain Betta Living hasrevamped its online presence.

The 21-store chain has updatedbettaliving.co.uk and launched anecommerce store selling accessories that complement its core fitted furnitureproducts, such as stools, lighting, storage, bedding and beds.

Visitor numbers to the website haverisen sharply year on year and thewebsite is a major source of bookings for

the store’s free home design consultationservice, says Noel Dean, Betta Living ceo.

‘Our philosophy as a business has longbeen to continually reinvest in makingshopping with us a fantastic experience, and the time was right to revamp thewebsite both visually and to cater for the diversity of devices people nowuse to browse and gather informationonline, be it tablet devices orsmartphones,’ he adds.

Little more than a year after it was sold to turnaround firm SKG Capital, highstreet retailer Walmsley’s has been placed in administration – the third timein seven years.

Mark Phillips, joint administrator atinsolvency practitioner PCR, saysWalmsley’s, like many other retailbusinesses, has suffered from theeconomic recession that has blighted theBritish high street. ‘We are investigatingto what extent we will be able to fulfilorders, however, this is dependent on

our ability to acquire stock from thirdparty suppliers. I would, however, stressthat it will take some time for us to assessthe situation,’ he says.

SKG bought 25 of the chain’s stores inAugust 2011, its second move intofurniture retailing after buying Mark ElliotFurniture in 2010. At the time SKG said‘taking on the heritage of Walmsley’s wasa natural choice and progression’ afterbuying Mark Elliot. The seven Mark Elliotstores began closing down in January2012.

Victoria warnson profits againas Bullock retiresVictoria Carpets has warned that it will break even at best for the fullyear ending in April 2013.

On 1 October the group said UK sales were ‘significantly ahead ofthe corresponding period last year,’ but it would only break even forthe half year. On 12 November it had to warn shareholders that‘current trading, in both Australia and the UK, remains weak andsignificantly behind budget.’

The company says: ‘Following their appointment at the generalmeeting on 3 October, the new board of directors has undertaken adetailed review of the current trading and short-term prospects ofVictoria. This review is continuing. However, it is already apparentthat the company is likely to break even at best for the full yearending 4 April 2013, at a pre-tax level before exceptional costs.’

The company says the directors are ‘doing everything they can toremedy the situation’ and were due to provide an update by the endof November.

Alan Bullock, former Victoria group md, has retired after fourdecades at the company. He had said in the summer that he wouldleave if the board was changed at October’s general meeting. He wasvoted off the board in August at the AGM.

‘I am retiring from a company that has a brand that I admire. Theteam I helped recruit over the years has the skills and knowledge tocontinue to keep Victoria as a leading brand name within an industrywhich over the years has seen many changes. I wish them all well andthank all the staff around the group for their loyalty and service andwish them well in the future. I also acknowledge the customers whoover the years have been loyal to the brand too,’ said a statement.

Trading at Victoria is ‘behind budget’

Footfall boost: Footfall has doubled in Marks & SpencerHome departments where the ‘Cheshire Oaks’ format hasbeen introduced. Rolled out in August, it is now in 11 storesand the chain says more than half of its Home space will beconverted to the new look by Christmas. No details weregiven on converting the increased customer numbers tosales, but it said that performance was ‘encouraging’.

Cashflow problemPoor cashflow has forced Swindon furniture andflooring retailer Manor Furniture into administration. The firm, which has traded for 18 years, was namedthe town’s best furniture retailer in the Best ofSwindon Awards last year.

‘Like many other big ticket retailers, ManorFurniture has been hit hard by the difficult economicconditions and the knock-on effect on consumerspending,’ says the administrator Hazlewoods.

‘With suppliers reluctant to provide extendedcredit terms and no other sources of financeavailable to the company, there was increasingcashflow pressure which led to the company beingunable to fulfil customer orders and meet thepayment demands from creditors.’

Flexiload containersCabinet importer Flexiload has exited the wholesalemarket to concentrate on its container business.Wholesaler Classic Furniture, which already sellsFlexiload’s Milano and Rochelle ranges, will take overdistribution of the Welland, Hampstead, Oregon,Aspen, Tuscany and Verona collections from January.

Flexiload says the move will allow it toconcentrate on design, sourcing and shippingcontainers and will see greater efficiency from theChinese factories it uses.

Store to become a pubNorth Devon independent retailer Bideford Carpetand Furnishing Centre will relocate within the towncentre after its current store becomes a pub.National chain JD Wetherspoon is negotiating tobuy the two-storey premises and a deal could beagreed by the end of the year. No date has been setfor the closure of the Bridgeland Street store.

UK saleshave risen

Ekornes boss downbeat on recovery for the sectorØyvind Tørlen, Ekornes ceo, says he can see noimprovement in the furniture market ‘for a long time’.

Revealing the group’s third quarter performance toshareholders, Tørlen predicted further casualties in thesector. ‘In the UK and Republic of Ireland, overall conditionsin the furniture market continue to be extremely weak, a situation that must be expected to continue for a longwhile to come. Many of those engaged in the furnitureindustry are struggling to maintain profitability andsolvency. Furniture retailers report that in-store trafficremains poor,’ he says.

UK and Ireland orders rose by 1% in the quarter and by 4% in the nine month period, but were down 2% in theyear to October.

‘The level of orders received by Ekornes in the thirdquarter 2012 was on a par with the same period last year. However, order receipts are still subject to majorfluctuations and are highly unpredictable. Sales revenues inthe third quarter were slightly higher than in the samequarter in 2011,’ he says.

When predicting trends, people often ask me where I get myinspiration from. The answer is everywhere. Walking in fields, gardens, flowers, the catwalk, cosmetics – inspiration is allaround us.

Fashion colours, patterns and textures have been migratingfrom the catwalk into our homes for some time but it is nowhappening more quickly than ever before. Everything iscompletely intertwined.

Fashion in the home is so strong now. Colour is coming fromall avenues and people are a lot bolder. There is no right orwrong. People are not frightened and are happy to live withwhat they want.

The emphasis is on upcycling and regeneration.

In terms of colours, the emphasis is on cool – not cold – andthese cool shades interplay with warmer, brighter shades.

Nostalgia can be seen in washed out greys, greige andalabaster inspired by beaches and pebbles. Welcoming shadesof white and a melange of skin tones add to the vintage, romantic flavour. There is also a prettier influence with soft, chalky pastels.

A chic 1970’s style influence blends rich golden tones withvibrant orange, rusts and browns. Tangerine, yellow and fuschiaare new fashion colours and these can be coordinated withneutrals, saturated greys and mauve.

There is also lot of green, ranging from herbal, pretty springtones to vegetable, jade and bottle greens. Shades of black andshades of charcoal are taking preference over black, whilebright colours will be jewellery inspired – not bling, but morecostume jewellery.

Patterned carpets are now firmly back in the spotlight whichis great news for period properties. Traditional florals, classicscrolls and chic cameo motifs come into their own, while stripesand tartans lend a more masculine, dynamic edge. As well asthe return of time honoured classics, new graphic inspiredpatterns are causing a storm.

There are a lot of cheerful colours to combat the currentausterity and doom and gloom. Anything goes and we areencouraged to add individuality and personality into our lives.

Greendale sources and markets carpetsfor its members on a non-profit basis

In 1962 Harold Macmillan was primeminister with the country enjoying aperiod of post-war prosperity. Inflationwas 1.1% compared with 2.7% now, while unemployment was negligible, itwas well below today’s figure of over2.5million. The average house cost£2,670 while average yearly earningswere £799.

It was also the year when a number ofretailers came together and foundedGreendale to source and market carpetsfor its members on a non-profit basis.

During the next 50 years a lot changedbut Greendale Carpets and Flooringsprospered, with its unique stockholdingwarehouse owned by the members. Thegroup now has some 50 suppliers acrossall product categories with around 100own-labelled carpet ranges, all renamedto colour level and competitively priced. The group sources its own exclusiveranges which offer members enhancedvalue for money to complementrenamed brand leaders, all ordered via itsoffice and support facilities at Hereford.

‘Relabelling is becoming an essentialpart of the modern independent carpetretailer’s armoury,’ says Rob Harding,Greendale chief executive.

It enables them to compete withmultiple own-label ranges, widelydistributed manufacturers products andInternet marketed ranges as well asgiving them local exclusivity. He saysthere are a lot of challenges facing theindependent retailer but productselection should not be one of them.

‘The Greendale ranges are selected bymembers for members, and our bulkbuying stockholding and non-profitmaking ethos ensures that membershave the best products at the mostcompetitive buying prices as all savingsare passed on to the member for theirbenefit,’ he says.

Greendale members are given a localarea to develop, thereby enabling themto exploit the brand to its maximum.

‘We actively discourage Internetmarketing or national advertising as themember in his local area is our priority. We believe that certain flooring products, especially rugs, can be marketed on theInternet but the complicated nature ofcarpets mean that it is far better suited toa local approach through an experiencedretailer with competent fitting resources.

‘We believe that an independentretailer is best qualified to handle aconsumer who does not alwaysunderstand the product, may have a difficult sized area to carpet and isoften spending many thousands of

pounds,’ Harding explains. Greendale members have dedicated

in-store displays to show the wide rangeof Greendale products, as well as thehigh end Elizabeth Grieves and budgetNice Price ranges.

All Greendale members belong toBIRA, the association of independentretailers, and qualify for a range ofbenefits including preferential credit cardrates. The group has its own website withinformation for consumers as well as amember area. Agents help memberslocally and the group organises anexhibition and dinner for members tomeet suppliers and discuss business, with 250 attending this years’ event.Greendale: tel: 01432 852 000

Direct rebatesRetailers receive 100% of the rebates offered by ACGAssociated Carpet Group has negotiateda comprehensive range of annualrebates with its preferred suppliers.Rebates are paid on all A-grade turnover cuts and rolls with allarrangements clearly presented.

‘If members support our list ofsuppliers they will earn more rebate andmake more profit,’ says Richard Moore,Associated Carpet Group membershipexecutive.

The price benefits and rebates aredelivered directly to the retailer. The

group does not handle the money ortake a percentage to run its operations:ACG’s central costs are paid for by anannual subscription.

Moore is keen to stress that the grouphas no desire to get involved withmembers’ businesses.

‘Our members deal direct withmanufacturers and suppliers and wedon’t get in the way. Our job is to makesure they have the best possiblerelationship with optimal trading termsand keep 100% of the rebates. We’re not

a business, we’re not a wholesaler, andwe’re not a warehouse. We’re not out tointerfere with trade – only to enhance it,’he says.

The group says it is important formembers to get together to air theirviews.

‘Over many years friendships havebeen formed and this has attributed tothe strong support we receive. As well asregional meetings and the AGM, thegroup has organised promotional tripincentives alongside our listed suppliers. This year we took 160 people to LakeGarda which was considered by bothmembers and suppliers one of the most successful trips within the industry,’says Moore.

The group has developed the SmartChoice own-label range, which issupported by POS and promotions.

ACG also offers members a marketingtoolkit to help drive sales. This includesready-made advertising and direct mailcampaigns, business advice and aprofessional website service.

BRM is creating a retailer community

The retailers within the BRM organisationare fully independent and use a varietyof the BRM services at their discretion. Acomplete turnkey consultancy for thelarger furniture/department storeembraces all that a modern flooringretailer would require from departmentdesign, buying, staff training, retail pricecalculations on an annual profit targetedbasis, to a smaller retail requirement onspecific product and cost information.Rebates are negotiated and distributedon an individual basis.

BRM has avoided creating its ownbrand labelling, taking the view that themost important brand is that of theretailer. If the retailer requires own-labelproducts they are encouraged to askBRM to create labels in their own image.

BRM and its retailers are using theInternet and social networking toencourage customers to visit retail stores.

Not just abuying group

The www.beautifulflooring.co.uk magazine website has anenviable search success, especially for consumerssearching for a recognised brand. This has increased the turnover ofboth retailers and suppliers alike, according to BRM.

Being aware of the Internet hasallowed BRM and its retailers tounderstand and be informed of differingways to market.

To cover all aspects of this marketwww.beautifulflooringdirect.co.uk waslaunched in late September to serve thetype of product that BRM retailers wouldnot normally feature. This places theretailer in all sectors of opportunity inthe marketplace.

BRM retailers have geographicalexclusivity and are involved in decidingwhich products are selected for display.

The Buying Groups National FlooringShow in May each year offers the BRMretailers the opportunity to meet and tosee the new products from over 70leading suppliers.

‘Very fundamental and at the heart ofBRM philosophy is the independence ofthe retailers involved, while the BRM staffbring many years of buying and retailexpertise to the community of retailers itrepresents,’ says Paul Phillips, BRM md.BRM, tel: 01892 549 050

Authentic Models’products arebased on originalssuch as theBantam MidgetSpindizzy (right)

With an assortment of coordinating furniture, lighting andaccessories, Authentic Models’ range is an interesting source ofobjects and inspiration for the interiors industry. ‘From agedpropellers to desks for all sorts of rooms, to oversized lamps tocreate a serious statement in a public area, the offer is likevisiting a particularly quaint antique shop,’ says Eric Hanson,Authentic Models UK sales manager.

Authentic Models was set up in Amsterdam in the late 1960sby Haring Piebenga, who saw a market for reproductionantiques at a lower price than the real thing. The collection hasexpanded over the decades, but the core concept remains thesame: unique objects, finely crafted and inspired by originals.

The company’s development team regularly sources originalsfrom trawling through auction catalogues online to knocking

on someone’s door to buy a headlamp from the old car spottedouside the house.

‘From hand-built airplane models to a complete furniturecollection or a series of nostalgic board games, we try to offer alittle something for everyone. Each of the items has a storybehind it and passionate travellers are drawn to the history andintrigue. Our items regularly turn up at auction, which is atestament to our commitment to quality,’ adds Hanson.

Recent merchandising partners include Louis Vuitton, MaisonPiper Heidsieck, Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren.

Interiors UK will see the company highlight vintage spotlightsfrom 1930’s movie studios, nautical lamps, steamer trunksconverted into bars on wheels, its signature hot air balloons andairplane models and globes from five different centuries.

Pure thingA new format is encouragingexhibitors at the Pure Village

Next month’s IMM Cologne sees the launch of the Pure Editions andPure Textiles sections, attracting a host of names.

Following the launch of the Pure Village format three years ago,the exclusiveness and the installation-like character of Pure Editionsseems to be in tune with the times and are proving attractive tonew exhibitors such as Capo D’opera, Extremis, Serralunga, Slideand Vondom.

Heritage yearThe Old Charm brand has enjoyed a major sales liftThis year has seen Wood Bros’ Old Charm brand move into newmarkets with its premium finish Heritage – a combination ofoak and light antiquing in a warm chestnut colour.

‘Heritage possesses a character that appeals to consumersthat prefer a quality distressed look that evokes the passage oftime. Whether the demand for this look has sprung from anostalgic nod to tradition in a time of economic uncertainty orsimply an aspirational preference for more classic styling, wehave certainly noticed a difference in buying patterns,’ saysMalcolm Nix, Wood Bros sales and marketing director.

Heritage has helped Old Charm sales to climb 19% this year.Due to the success of Heritage, a new lighter colour, Flaxen,

has been developed, available on the Chatsworth collection. ‘The mellow antiqued look that both these finishes achieve is

a natural partnership with Old Charm’s distinctive carving, bespoke ironmongery and character oak,’ adds Nix.

He says the proportion of Heritage orders is increasing monthon month and it is fast becoming an integral part of the OldCharm mix. It is also responsible for the opening of a number ofnew accounts.Visit: www.oldcharm.co.uk Above: The new Flaxen finish

LIGHTING

62 Interiors Monthly December 2012

The latest LED technology can improve in-store design and save money

‘Lighting is a key consumer of energy in our retail stores,’ saysColin Donaldson, founder and director of Middlesbroughclothing retailer Triads. ‘Earlier this year we started a project tolook at how we might reduce our energy costs, simplify lampmaintenance and enhance the impact of our contemporaryretail space even further.’

Triads two stores have a reputation for creating striking retailinteriors that attract customers and display luxury merchandiseto its best advantage.

The solution for the Albert Road store included LED lampsfrom British lighting company Kosnic, retrofitted in existingfittings. Triads has a strong commitment to minimisingenvironmental impact and a site survey and energy calculationdemonstrated that the new LED solution would reduceelectricity consumption by more than half and provide apayback in just seven months.

Once installed the store’s staff noticed they used the airconditioning less, because the LEDs emit far less heat thantraditional bulbs. Cost-savings are compounded by a longerlamp life than a halogen equivalent and less maintenance, soelectrical resources can be diverted to vibrant projects in-store,such as installing colour changing LED strips.

Importantly, the lighting has further enhanced the retailspace by providing a cleaner, brighter light. This meansproducts are displayed in a light closer to daylight enablingshoppers to make better choices.

‘We’re anticipating less returns,’ says Donaldson. ‘Every retailerknows that turnover is affected by returns, and this is an addedbonus. This has given us a model for the lighting at our flagshippremises, where Kosnic LED lamps will also be installed.’Kosnic, tel: 0845 838 6851

The unique lens design includes a COB LED chip. This means that you can swap your existing halogen lamps to LEDs and your customers won't notice any change in ambience or light level.

In fact, the only difference will be significantly lower electricity bills and less maintenance. Perfect for restaurants, retail environments and hotels.

The organisation’s charitable activitiesare focused on providing support andfinancial assistance to those in need whoare, or have been, involved in thefurnishings industry. It also providestraining, bursaries and financial supportto new entrants to the industry and tothose seeking advancement.

Building on the past success of theFTBA area committees, which promotedand raised awareness and funds for thecharity, TFM is hoping to establish anetwork of regional committees.

The committees will focus on localfundraising and identify local projectsand people in need of support.

‘We want to ensure our messagereaches the entire Industry. We needenthusiastic volunteer supporters at a

TFM needs motivated people whohave the leadership, organisational skills, drive and contacts to initiate localfundraising ideas and projects. Also, supporting the charity can form a keycomponent of a company’s CorporateSocial Responsibility.
