The month of November came in like a lamb with mild temperatures and a happy spirit at Marvin Heights. Much of it was due to our students who are learning to be reflective and introspective. Mindfulness classes have begun for a very select group of students. They are benefiting from the opportunity to have quiet moments of deep breathing and self reflection. We have seen a difference in the anxiety levels in some of our students as they begin to implement successful strategies that help them cope. Marvin Heights has also adopted a growth mindset towards teaching and learning. Our students are developing an understanding that “intelligence is a malleable quality that can be developed through perseverance and hard work.” Each class co-created a pledge to work hard and learn from mistakes. November was also the month where we took the time to pause and remember the contributions of so many great men and women who fought for our country. On November 11 th Marvin Heights joined the rest of the country in honouring soldiers, both past and present, who fight to protect the freedom we currently enjoy. It was a pleasure to see our Student Leaders take on the task of “facilitating” the assembly. A special thank you to the choir, 3A and 5A who read poetry and sang songs of remembrance for us. On November 16th many of our students had the opportunity to see a Steelheads game at the Hershey Centre. It was an exciting time for our students as they watched hockey in action! The students embraced the chance to see the Steelheads face off with the Oshawa Senators. A great time was had by all!

HELP YOUR FAMILY STAY WARM THIS WINTER

Canada Safety Council recommends the following tips for staying comfortable and preventing hypothermia when working or playing outdoors:

Wear a warm hat—most body heat is lost through the head. Children should keep an extra hat at school.

Wear layered clothing. Layers allow warm air to stay trapped around the body. Protect your feet and hands. Wear loose waterproof boots. If the boots have liners,

carry an extra pair to replace damp ones or take an extra pair of socks. Invest in thick socks to keep your feet warm. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Carry an extra pair of mittens to school, on outings, etc.

Prevent dehydration and exhaustion, which can lead to hypothermia. Drink plenty of fluids and pace yourself when doing vigorous activities.

Stay fit by exercising and eating well—people who are fit are less susceptible to hypothermia.

If you stay indoors, avoid moving from a hot environment to a cold one. Excessive sweating caused from an extreme change in temperature increases the risk of developing hypothermia.

Eat high-energy food such as nuts and raisins. A balanced diet will also help keep you warm and healthy in the winter.

If you are travelling (on the road or in the wilderness) carry emergency supplies.
