The President’s Message By: Victoria Janmohammed [email protected]

Wishing you all had an enjoyable and relaxing Thanksgiving Holiday!

Once again, the Hersey Band program did not disappoint with this year’s Thanksgiving Food Drive. There were so many student volunteers helping shop and assemble the food boxes for families to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. A special “Shout Out” to Filip Kempa and his parents Agata and Maciej for helping make this year’s Thanksgiving Food Drive a success!! Thanks also to Debbie Popp and Todd Niemiec for chaperoning the shopping and watching over all the kids that gave up a good part of their Sunday to volunteer. The Hersey Band families generosity did not go unnoticed. The 37 boxes included a gift card for the main entree and groceries. Thanks also to Tony’s Fresh Market for their continued support with gift cards and donated items for this charitable event. You all make the Hersey Band Family proud!

Right around the corner are the Holiday Collage Concerts on December 2nd. Don’t forget to take home a few tins of delicious homemade cookies which will be available at the Cookies By The Pound sale. Also available at the concert will be tickets to the In Good Taste event and fundraiser held at the Metropolis Ballroom in Arlington Heights on Saturday February 2, 2019. There will be wine and craft beer tasting, silent auction, food, and live music by Hersey alumni. Once again, there will be a feature raffle (see this newsletter for further details).

We hope you and your family have a Happy, Healthy, & Safe New Year! We look forward to seeing you at the General HIA Meeting Tuesday January 15, 2019 at 7:30pm. Jazz combos will be performing for our enjoyment that evening. The general meeting is open to all Band Parents/Guardians. Looking forward to seeing you all! Enjoy the holiday season!!

Advertisement Fundraising Packets Distributed

In early January, in class, students will be given materials to assist in the selling of advertisements in our Chicagoland Invitational Concert Band Festival Program Book. The packet will tentatively include 2 advertising brochures, 3 pledge forms, a sample script and a contact worksheet. This is our biggest and most important fundraiser of the year. Students receive 20% of the ad profit for their student accounts (this money can be used for trip funds, band fees, uniform needs, etc) In addition, students will receive 40% of the ad profit if they can get an ad from a previous year’s sponsor that was previously pledged to a student that has left the program. Every student is asked to generate at least one advertisement for the program book. These items will be due at the end of January.

Concert/Cadet Band Elementary School Tour

The Concert/Cadet band will take their annual tour of the elementary schools on Friday, December 7 during the school day, spreading Holiday cheer to exuberant audiences throughout our attendance area. Of course, a highlight of the trip is our stop at Barnaby’s Pizzeria for lunch.

11th Annual In Good Taste Fundraiser in early February at

Metropolis Ballroom

We look forward to a fun adult night out at our winetasting fundraiser that will take place on Saturday, February 2. This fundraiser in this beautiful facility is a huge success every year and our committee has been working hard since September to insure the success of this year’s venture. We are putting much planning and effort into this fundraiser in the hopes to make it bigger and better than ever before. Last year we sold out! Plans include more artisan beer availability, alumni performances, a silent auction, raffle and many other fun items. Please look for more information at the upcoming Holiday Concert and in our newsletter blasts. Checks will be due at the end of January.

Jazz Bands to Purdue University Jazz Festival 0n January 18-19

Once again the JHHS Jazz Ensembles and Jazz Combos will travel to West Lafayette, IN to participate in this fantastic event. Over 90 bands will be competing this day and our students will again have the opportunity to hear a world-class jazz concert on Friday (Stefon Harris + Blackout this year!!!) as well as feedback from outstanding educators and clinics with fantastic musicians. Of course, we will again have our progressive dinner through student rooms and each room (they’re suites with kitchenettes) will be responsible for a dinner course. Cost of the weekend should be app. $175. Parents should look for a flyer and more detail before the Holiday Break. At least one Hersey band has been named an Honor Band in their respective classification since 2005, consecutively.

Dear Band Parents,

On February 2, 2019 Hersey Band will be holding it’s 11th annual In Good Taste fundraiser. This event is the second largest fundraiser of the year, so we hope you will support the band by purchasing a ticket and joining us for a night of fun, food, and drinks.

Event Ticket Incentive This year we are offering an exciting incentive to band parents to help sell more admission tickets. For each $45 Early Bird event ticket you sell*, your child will receive a $10 credit in their band account! Invite your extended family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors!

In addition to fabulous global wines and artisan craft beers, we will have tasty appetizers, desserts, as well as numerous games, raffles, and silent auction items. A cash/credit bar will also be available this year!

Grand Raffle Ticket Incentive We are also offering an incentive on our Grand Raffle tickets. Grand raffle tickets are $25 each or 5 for $100. 20% of your Grand Raffle ticket sales will also be applied to your child’s band account. There are (10) Grand Raffle tickets attached to this packet for your convenience. If you need more, please feel free to let us know.

Admission tickets and Grand Raffle tickets can be purchased two different ways:

1. Online at www.herseyband.com. Click on the “In Good Taste” Fundraiser icon.

There is a box to identify which student the admission and/or Grand Raffle ticket(s) will be supporting.

2. Manually via cash or check. Checks should be made out to HIA. Please return the sold ticket stubs from the Grand Raffle tickets along with cash and/or checks collected (as well as any unsold tickets) by January 19. Please note on the envelope the name of the student who will benefit from the sales.

If you have any questions on the incentive program, please contact Irene Gillespie at [email protected] or 224-735-3348. Let’s make this year our most successful yet!

Mr. C

*Note: Band parents are not eligible to receive the $10 student credit on their own tickets. The $10 credit applies to full price $45 tickets only. Discounted non-alcoholic tickets, and alumni tickets do not qualify for the student credit. The $10 credit incentive program ends on January 18. Tickets purchased after January 18 will not be eligible for student credit.
