FINE WINE - THE ON-LINE MAGAZINEPlease share you tips and ideas on anything of interest: occasions, meetings, vineyards, producers, investing, etc… [email protected]. We are not responsible for unsolicited material. Feel free to cite Fine Wine, but remember to quote us as the source.

REDAKTION:Ove Canemyr, Editor-in-chief, Fine Wine /Trendsetter Box 24013, 104 50 Stockholm. Layout: Sophie L. Slettengren, byDesign AB, [email protected] English texts; Todd Bünger [email protected]

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL FINE WINE LOVERS!

Time for another edition of Fine Wine, just in time for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. And as usual, we’ve filled Santa’s bag with tons of interesting details for everyone interested in investments or something extra special before the Holiday’s.

As per usual, we begin with news from the wide world of wine.

Susanne finishes with her third installment on the series of RIOJA articles, and

Johan Franco Cereceda lets us know what he thinks about wine fundamentalists and their forward march.

We take a trip across the pond and also across the US to land in California, where we find out what is going on in Napa before Christmas.

In the third part of our ”Spotlight on New Zealand” series, we have arrived at the northern part of the southern island to meet some of their most famous wine makers.

Then, we lift the lid and take a closer look at one of Bourgogne’s giants - Patri-arche. Lots to learn…

What is happening in Hong Kong these days? We’ll give you the story.

Penfolds Collection has reached the market again this time of year. We’ll tell you more about it.

And it is also time to tell you all about the wines represented at this year’s Fine Wine Tasting. So many interesting ideas as the Holidays approach.

But first, read Sören Nylund’s description of the objects available at the Wine and Spirits Auction in Stockholm.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

LAST HOLIDAYS OF THE YEAR BEST CELEBRATED WITH A GLASS OF HENNESSY VERY SPECIAL Since 1765, Hennessy has produced exceptional cognac to enjoy during the year’s various holidays, and Christmas and New Year’s Eve are no exceptions. So as these particular two holidays ap-proach, Hennessy Very Special will be available as a limited edition. Inspired by their iconic form, these limited edi-tion bottles will be presented in dra-matic gift boxes in black or gold. Hen-nessy Very Special has an intense and fruit-filled aroma, as well as comforta-ble tones of oak. The taste is reminis-cent of roasted almonds supported by fresh, lively tones of grapes. Perfect to enjoy before and after dancing around the Christmas tree, or at midnight on New Year’s Eve.

time taste experiences in the future.

EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE FELT IN BOURGOGNEPaul Attwood Philippe, European Sales Director at Louis Max, was in Stockholm and visited the French Wine Days at Grand Hotel. We took the chance to ask him about his views o climate change in Bourgogne and what he feels the future holds in store.

”The growth period is starting earlier and earlier. The winters aren’t that cold anymore, so the grapes can be picked from late September into early October nowa-days. Spring is a little more complicated when the frost comes after the buds have already bloomed, followed by a few weeks of rain. If we are lucky, like we were this year, the summers are warm and we get nice har-vest two weeks earlier. That’s been the trend of late – 5 or 6 years in a row. Louis Max has been producing organic wines for a few years now, and a lot of the work takes place in the vineyards. We’ve gotten used to changing time axis. Another possibility is to work with various clones that are heartier and might ripen earlier. This is common in the New World, but in Bourgogne, we work with our terroir and in the vineyards instead. We’ll probably also have to work more often with clones in the future. We have already started working with scientific solutions. But we’re not there yet.”

NEW COGNAC TRENDSFrédéric Dezauzier, global brand manag-er for CAMUS cognac, arrived in Stockholm the other day, and provided us with some insights into new cognac trends:

”Cognac can be en-joyed wherever and whenever. We have one named ”Ile de Re,” and are the sole producers on that island. What makes that particular co-gnac unique is its maritime character. It is filled with subtleties like sea salt, and it pairs well with the fruits of the sea. Chilled, together with salmon or oysters, it is amazingly tasty. When you open an oyster there’s always some ex-tra seawater… We take the cognac from the freezer and ad a few drops. What an experience! It tastes kind of nutty. You have to try it…” says Frédéric with a big smile. ”Who could’ve imagined it 30 years ago? As far back as the 1930s, people started using cognac in iced cocktails. That trend is returning, but I prefer neat cognac, together with hard, sharp cheese, as a good mix of sweet and salt which always puts a smile on my face.”

MOËT & CHANDON GRAND VINTAGE 2008Marie-Christine Os-selin has been the new winemaker at Moët Chandon since May this year. At the restaurant Kasai in Stockholm, she presented her new Vintage 2008, the 72nd in a row.

Together with Kasai’s Asian food, the new vintage felt very ”right” - focused taste, tightness and consistency of the juicy white fruit tones, and the linger-ing citrusy undertones.

Marie-Christine explains that the 2008 is made from 40 % Chardonnay, 37 % Pinot Noir and 23% Meunier, and that it was cellar-aged for 7 years. The wine has a sugar content of 5g/l.

”When you taste Moêt Chandon Grand Vintage 2008, you are actually explor-ing the Champagne House’s longevity and multi-faceted savior-faire tradi-tion,” says Ladi Moradi, brand manager at Moët Hennessy Sweden.WE ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO CHANGE

EVERYTHINGMatt Thomson, Winemaker at St Clair Family Estate, visited the Food & Beverage convention in Stockholm. He was extremely happy with the convention some he felt was well organized and professional, and included the ”right” visitors. ”Sweden is a very important market for us, together with the UK and USA. We’ve also won a lot of awards this year from other parts of the world, especially in Hong Kong and Japan. We are even investing a lot of time and energy in understanding the Chi-nese market.”

”Back home, we are constantly trying to change everything. So much hard work goes into what we create, and we’ve invested a lot of resources in the Hawkes Bay area in order to make a high quality Shiraz from the Gimblett Gravels terroir during the years to come. We also make a ”bone-dry” Riesling that is really ap-preciated in Sweden, while we also work with many development projects with other European grape varieties. We’re talking about a lot of balance in the Pinot Noirs. We’ve experience climate change the past five years or so, and have actu-ally seen icebergs floating along the coastline – something we had never seen previously; so yes, we are feeling the effects of global warming in NZ. We are looking into how we can increase organic aspects of our vineyards, even if we never make a ”Magical Mystery Tour” like some other producers further south.”

WINE TRENDS WITH ADRIAN GARFORTH, MWThere are currently many things affecting and leading to the creation of new trends in the wine and wine consumption world.

According to Adrian Garforth, wine consumption can be compared to a luxury competition for high-income tak-ers. That’s one way to look at it. Many factors contribute, like wine style and competi-tion with traditional farming, for example organic pro-duction, low sulfite content, different types of sparkling wines and a return to time proven method (grape sorts and regions), as well as education an confidence.New influences – bloggers, social media with immediate-ly available information before, during and after purchas-

es, as well as word-of-mouth recommendations that create said media. Who knew that buying wine online included a quality guarantee as opposed to buying wine in a shop in China? A sort of world turned upside-down?Organic production, Fair-trade, Sustainability have all become more common. All of this from Adrian Garforth at a seminarium at Eriks close to the ”former” Slussen area in Stockholm arranged by VINIA.The tables included wines from across the globe which were tested against one another in this trend tasting, which included Org de Rac from Sydafrika, Vigno-bles Mayard from Chatauneuf-du Pape, Verdicchio dei Castelli and Fransisco Gomez’ red wine from Alicante (for only 69 SEK – a steal). If we shift focus from global consumers and take a closer look at wine trends, the New World is pitted against the Old World, new grape types meet tradition-al winners, winemakers are testing traditional methods instead of experimental winemaking, and everyone is talking about organic production, sustainability and Fair-trade.

AMARONE FAMILIES VISIT STOCKHOLMThroughout the past few years, Amarone wines have been very successful in Swe-den and on wine lists around the world.

But there is also a backside to the medals.

The successes have led to copycats, production shortcomings and pure falsifications. This is the background history behind Famiglie dellÀmarone dÁrte, a collaboration among produc-ers that aim to protect historic authen-ticity. The organization currently has 13 members, all of them leading produc-ers, both large and small, family-owned operations in Valpolicella and nearby localities. The project also includes Bot-tega del Vino in Verona, the legendary meeting place for wine lovers in con-nection with Vinitaly and during the rest of the year. The Consejo Regulador exam is getting closer and today it was time to visit the third sub region, Rioja Alta, to conclude our education. As usual, I began my morning with a café con leche and a tuna fish sandwich at my favorite café on the street below my hotel. To top things off, I even spoil myself with a little tortilla de patata and secretly listen in on all the chitchat going on around me.

Later on, our bus heads west to-wards Haro, where we will visit Ramón Bilbao, Bodega Lacuesta and an unusual tasting experience at R. Lopez de Heredia. Again, the journey takes us through Rioja’s beautiful landscape of mountains and valleys, where you sometimes even get a glimpse of the Ebro and its tributaries.

RIOJA ALTA

”Rioja Alta” means ”High Rioja” in English, but not because it the mountaintops, rather because the region stretches out to the north towards the Ebro’s end. Or as the locals say, ”The Ebro is born in the mountains and dies in the Mediter-ranean.” Poetic, but also true. This sub region’s 25,500 ha makes it the largest of the three and comprises 42% of DOCa Rioja’s total wine-growing area. The largest portion of vineyards is located on the south side of the river. The climate is gen-erally milder in Alta compared with the other sub regions and is affect-ed by both Atlantic and prevailing continental climate conditions. Ad-ditionally, there are mesoclimates in the Oja and Najerilla tributaries’ valleys. The northwestern area, in-cluding the Oja Valley and Haro, get the largest Atlantic influences of the entire appellation. Lime-rich clay and alluvial soil dominate here, but Rioja Alta also has other soil types. The northern bank of the Ebro is home to a few vineyards around San Vicente de Sonsierra, where iron-rich soil is the most commen. That part of Alta Rio-

ja is situated between Alavesa and Tempranillo and is dominant in the sub region. The vineyards here have existed for many generations and traditional family craftsman-ship passed down through the years is apparent in their products. This area also contains the preserved, old, small shaded areas, Chozos, where in the past workers would take shelter from the sweltering heat. Chozos even functioned as tool sheds. In general, Tempranil-lo and other approved grape types (such as Garnacha, Mazuelo, Gra-ciano, and others) are grown in Alta, and the area’s wines are often blends of various grape combina-tions. That is why Alta wines are often richer and more concentrated than the elegant wines in Alavesa, where Tempranillo grows in chalky soil and where the wines are often made with one type of grape. How-ever, the modern style is also pres-ent, though more as a companion to the traditional style found through-out the rest of the appellation.

BODEGA RAMÓN BILBAO

This Bodega was established in 1924 in Haro, and owns 165 ha. The company is growing at a fast pace and is seen as one of Spain’s most innovative producers in other quality segments. We met Rodolfo Bastida, who has been the wine-maker at Ramon Bilbao since 1999. Rodolfo believes in high altitude vineyards for Temparanillo, which give finesse and complexity. Hi was born in Rioja, and as he continues to test the boundaries he still has respect for knowledge and experi-ence, which comes from the area’s

traditions. But for him, the future will be built upon striving towards a goal and constant experimentation. In the super modern tasting and lec-ture halls, we test our way forward through a portion of the assortment, which besides the traditional crian-za, reserva and gran reserva also in-cludes more modern wines.

2015 LALOMBA

Rosé wine of Garnacha from older vine

Pale pink-red appearance with clean, young aroma reminiscent of lime. Fresh taste, somewhat fruit-filled, and taut and straightforward, fresh finish.

fruits. Taste is somewhat oaky, spicy and currently hides the fruits. Tight structure and young. Needs to be aged!

We tasted 3 Mirto vintages of 100% Tempranillo, fermented in French barrels with aroma and color ex-traction, followed by 22 months in new, small French casks. Bottled without filtration. In my opinion, the 2010 vintage was the best.

2010 MIRTO

Open and generous aroma filled with black currants and blackber-ries. Silky, smooth taste, the middle register is taut and dry with dark fruits. Beautiful mineral salt finish. Easy to enjoy now but can also has aging potential.

BODEGA MARTINEZ LACUESTA

We visited this interesting Bodega from 1895, which is well-known for their traditional vermouth along side their traditional Rioja. The fa-cilities are housed in modern, new, raw industrial-style facilities that provide contrast to the winery’s and storage space’s old traditions and equipment. Mister Lacuesta personally believes that Rioja is a copy of Bordeaux created through vinification , and from a histor-ic perspective comes from French methods which laid the foundation for the region. Together we tasted several verticals from the Bodega.

1968 CAMPEADOR

50/50 Tempranillo/Garnacha

Garnet appearnance with ripe aroma and oxidized style. Spicy and animal taste with high acidity, soft tannins and complete living entirety.

1981 CAMPEADOR

Same blend

Mahogany appearance, subtle aro-ma with a taste that reaches a fine balance of fruit, barrel and struc-ture. Fine, smooth finish.

2001 CAMPEADOR

Same blend

Deep mahogany appearance with aroma from dried fruits. Fresh acidity, concentrated taste and re-maining tannin-rich structure. Long, nice, youthful finish.

1995 FELIX MARTINEZ LACUESTA

55% Temperanillo, 25% Garna-cha, 20% Mazuelo. 24 months in new French oaks. Garnet appear-ance, palpable oxidation with raisin and spices. Similar in taste.

2000 FELIX MARTINEZ LACUESTA

Same blend and aging.

Ruby. Mild, fresh, fruitful aroma. Well-integrated fruit and barrel structure. Alive and vigorous with a refreshing finish.

Ruby red. Closed aroma with tight hints of dark fruits. Young taste characterized by dark fruits, oak, tight legs and high acidity. Young and under-developed. Store this one!

LACUESTA VERMUT RESERVA LIMITED EDITION

Very spicy aroma with hints of cher-ries and barrel, and chocolate with a fine, typical bitterness in the finish. The spices shine through, and in-clude cinnamon, ginger and vanilla, which are natural and are a part of the wine’s maceration process. The vermouth is extremely dry, and is a perfect match as an aperitif with orange zest and olives with pickles (according to señor Lacuesta).

LA CATA DEL BARRIO DE LA ESTACIÓN

Bodega Lopez de Heredia is locat-ed in the old train station in Haro. They have created a meeting place among the wine barrels for lec-tures and tastings. We tested wines from the renowned Bodegas Muga, CVNE, La Rioja Alta, Viña Pomal, Roda, Gomez Cruzado and last but not least Lopez de Heredia. All are from Haro.

2004 VIÑA TONDONIA TINTO RESERVA

Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo. 6 years in barrels, and further bottle aging.

Pure, slightly developed aroma with hints of oak, red fruits and minerality. Youthful taste, fresh with high acidity, complex fruit tones, concentrated entirety and straightforward focus. Thin texture and a caressing, long finish.

2007 LA RIOJA ALTA, VIÑA ARDANZA

Tempranillo, Garnacha. 2.5 years in oak + 4.5 years bottled.

Developed dill aroma with hints of leather and dark fruits. Balanced taste between the fruits, oak and structure. Fresh aftertaste with mineral tones.

2008 RODA I

Tempranillo. 16 months in French oak, half of which are new. 20 months in the bottle.

Youthful aroma from new French oak with dark fruit aromas. The taste is also reminiscent of dark fruits with sweet spiciness from the barrel. Nice structure which frames the entirety. Full-bodied, concentrated and still young. Long aftertaste. Should be aged to get the best result in terms of develop-ment and complexity.

2009 GÓMEZ CRUZADO RESERVA

Tempranillo. 18 months partly in older oak barrels from both France and America. 2 years in the bottle.

Young, vanilla-ish aroma with dark berries. Slightly closed. Strong structure that so far extends the fruits, but it has a blue plumb tone lingering behind the wine’s tan-nins and acidity.

2010 MUGA RESERVA SELECCIÓN ESPECIAL

Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazue-lo, Graciano. 26 months in both French and American oak barrels + 1 bottled one year.

Young, tight aroma of dark fruits and oak tones. Full-bodied taste, tight legs and concentrated yet fresh acidity and dark fruits, tobac-co and spices. Long aftertaste that is a little fiery in the alcohol. This is a young wine that should be aged!

2011 VIÑA POMAL RESERVA

Tempranillo. 18 months in Ameri-can oak + 2 years in the bottle.

Sweet berries and blooming aroma with hints of spices. An almost me-dicinal taste with constant tannins, red fruits and fresh acidity. Elegant totality canted with warming alco-hol. Long aftertaste. Easy to enjoy now but can also has aging potential.

2011 CVNE IMPERIAL RESERVA

Tempranillo, Graciano och Ma-zuelo. 2 years in both French and American oak barrels, followed by 2 years in the bottle.

Taut, deep aroma of dark berries and fruits, in a modern style. Taste has some tones of dill and oak fat, is complex tight, filling and con-centrated. Lots of fruit and oak spices. Long and rich aftertaste. Should definitely be aged to give a more elegant expression.

Besides Logroño, the city of Haro is well worth visiting. The old town is filled with many winding streets and dead-ends which house some amaz-ing hole-in-the-wall tapas restaurants. The classic meeting place is the city’s beautiful town square where the resi-dents congregate morning to evening and converse with one another. In and outside of the older parts of Haro there are many well-known traditional and modern Bodegas worthy of visiting. Lopez de Heredia, Muga, Roda, La Ri-oja Alta just to name a few.

For fly-fishing enthusiasts, a trip di-rectly south but up in the mountain is definitely something to consider. The picturesque, small village Torrecilla en Cameros, located by the Ebro tributary Iregua, is a most see. It offers fine fish-ing waters and hiking trails that invite you to explore the local surroundings.

There are many good Rioja wines in Systembolaget’s assortment that can be ordered; whites, reds and rosé wines from both traditional and mod-ern styles. It could be interesting to order a few of each and compare the traditional vs. the modern. Have fun and good luck!

cording to traditional regulations. An extraordinary example of just such a wine is Lopez de Heredia, Viña Tondonia Reserva Blanco.

EPILOGUE

Finally, our day for taking the test had arrived, where each and every one of us held individual presenta-tions about our chosen aspect of Rioja, in front of the Consejo Reg-ulador. And we all passed!

Sure, you can have those ideas. It’s called ”Wine Fundamentalism,” which is one of the most conserva-tive factions in the wine world and they are resisting change. It exists and has many believers. Far too many. And worst of all, I am one of them. But just some of the time, I reassure myself, because I try to ex-orcize the ingrained demons in my head about what is right and what is wrong. Most of the time it works pretty well for me. Obviously, the wine world is a fluid thing, con-stantly changing, experiences come and go, and I know it, and the same thing goes for certain tastes over time. Sometimes volatility is impor-tant, sometimes the fruit, and then later oak and acidity passé, followed by a trend that says oak and high

acidity are essentials. And so we con-tinue, over and over again. Chaotic, unstructured debates. Except for the Fundamentalists who know exactly how a Bordeaux blend should taste, smell and perform in a Riedel Su-perleggo Cabernet Sauvignon glass. In some way it is quite impressive, but equally as irritating. But you test yourself; how closely can you relate to these?

For example: A few years ago I trav-eled to the Canary Islands and vis-ited a vineyard that produced some ok wines. They had a pleasant res-taurant with a mile’s wide view and were good at pairing together their wines with the local cuisine. An in-teresting experience on many levels. And right in the middle of it all, they

brought out blue wine with one of the entrees. Yes, you read that cor-rectly, a BLUE wine. Clear blue, but produced from blue grape types where they first separate the color elements from the must and then add them in again later on in the process. Viola! Blue wine! The first reaction from my companions was fear, almost disgust. We tasted it, but our decisions were made before any-one even took a sip. Having already seen the cobalt nuances in the glass-es, there was no way we were going to give this wine a chance. Now, if you transfer that scenario, would the reaction be the same or something completely different? Such a conver-sation might include adjectives like innovative, playful, experimental ad/or visionary. You could talk about

wine fundamentalists TEXT: JOHAN FRANCO CERECEDA

Sure, it’s ok to think Pinot Noir is an exciting grape, but only if it comes from Bour-gogne. Or you might appre-ciate a wine from Bordeaux, although only if it costs more than 300 SEK (40 USD). Or that a Rioja should include tastes of wood, vanilla and a slight hint of dill. New World wines have are stylishly im-personal, and that is why you can’t even imagine drinking such a wine. And obvious-ly, Loire is the only region in the world that really under-stands the art of creating wi-nes with Sauvignon Blanc.

innovation, playfulness, experimen-tation, visionary. But in relation to wine, and I wonder why, no, that would be crazy. But ask yourself why. Does it really have to be that way? I honestly don’t know why we react the way we do. At the same time, we pull out our cell phones, take a pic of the glass, and post it on Snapchat – a real innovation BTW.

One more example: Swedish wine farmers. Just uttering those three words leads to suspicion. What are they good for, anyway? ”Shouldn’t we leave winemaking to those who can?” That is another common com-ment. And many of us working in the industry simultaneously praise the pioneers, those who think out-side of the box, and those who swim against the stream. In an established wine district. So how does that work? Well, it is call Fundamentalism. Liv-ing in a box – everything has it’s place. Sure, I realize that many peo-ple are skeptical to climate change, wine prices and grapes chosen for certain wines. But what I don’t get is how an entire industry can be giv-en a big ”NO” stamp because oth-ers have different opinions (built on what?). Weak. A few years ago, I wrote an article about Swedish wine production with the title ”Laugh last, laugh best.” I think we’ve come to that point now. We’ve tasted some very interesting Swedish wines, from grapes that many thought were too simple, uninteresting and lacking complexity.

And we can keep on doing this… Maybe we will get a better view of the world, but will this arcane way of seeing things, we’ll continue to glide far out into the periphery.

One final example: While on a car trip several years ago driving from Alicante and Madrid, I cut through Kastilien La Mancha, known in the world of wine for its enormous plantations and production, but also for its Vinos de Pagos, individ-ual properties famed for their high quality products. At some point, I turned off the road into a little vil-lage. It was lunchtime and I had a craving for some musty lamb stew with garlic breadcrumbs and migas, a local specialty. I sat down at the bar and ordered a glass of red. “Lo-cal, please.” The man on the other side of the bar threw his towel over his shoulder, opened an unlabelled

bottle, and poured it into a low glass.

”Best wine in the world,” he said.

I took a sip and despite my incli-nations was positively surprised. I had just gone through a veritable near-death experience. It was THAT good.

”But señor,” I managed, continuing, ”This wine is undrinkable.”

”It’s the best wine in the world be-cause it has always tasted the same,” said the Fundamentalist on the oth-er side of the bar.

Zero change. Can’t be more obvious than that.

As usual, the wind was blowing hard at the airport in Wellington, located on the southern tip of New Zealand’s North Island, so the trip down to Blenheim in the Marlborough region went quickly. We began with a quick visit to legendary producer Cloudy Bay. Many people associate them the LVMH concern, and thereby one of the first high quality wines from NZ to hit the Swedish market. Mario Dussurget gave us a tour of the vineyards and then drove us to a tasting with Tim Heath, Senior Winemaker at Cloudy Bay.

First on the table was PELORUS -13, a sparkling wine from Pinot Noir aged in barrique. Refresh-ing with up-front citrus and apple tones. A nice companion.

Then, a Sauvignon Blanc with trop-ical fruits and asparagus. Good tex-ture, something that is important to Tim, who calls the wine ”Adult clas-sified.” To best show the aging po-tential for this wine, we were served a 2005 (aged 11 years) - a fantastic wine that could even be opened ten years from now, without losing its freshness and simplicity.

Time for TE KOKO, which after 7 ½ months in barrique is still a very tasty and has well balanced acidi-ty, which makes it a fantastic wine with food – fine ginger and honey tones. An elegantly fresh wild yeast Chardonnay from 2014 followed.

TE WAHL -14, with grapes from other vineyards in Central Otago (considered within the wine world as the ”hottest” spot right now), leaves nothing to be desired. This incredible result is based on their own clone AM 10/0. TE WAHL’s first vintage was in 2010.

Early morning in Blenheim and time for an assortment tasting with Mar-cus Pickens. An astounding 75 % of all of NZ wines

come from the Marlborough re-gion. It has an already almost unbe-lievably large vineyard areal, which is expected to increase to 5650 ha planted by 2020. There are many reasons why just this area in the north of the South Island brags with the epithet ”The place with a hole in the sky.” It is amazing how many hours of sunlight they get every year, and they also have a protected location in the moun-taintops surrounding Marlborough from east to west, and warm winds between the North Island and the northern part of the South Island.

GIESEN Winery was our first stop, and we met their General Manager Rhyan Wardman. He related the story of the three brothers who over a thirty year span produced main-ly white wines, like THE ESTATE or THE BROTHERS. Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are the fo-cus here, and the most important for the wines is acidity. And that’s not too strange. Over the years, they’ve built up a Spanish-inspired restaurant where the food is com-bined with their wines in a splen-did manner. We tasted Sauvignon Blanc -15 and Pinot Noir -14 from Estate wines, and Sauvignon Blanc -14 and Pinot Noir -13 from The Brothers series.

St Clair Family Estate was next on the list. We pent the evening with Senior Winemaker Hamish Clark and his wife, and tasted their wines with dinner at a local restaurant. What a fantastic experience in every way.

St Clair is a well-known brand in Sweden, and their Pinot Noirs and Sauvignon Blancs have been also successful in competitions in Asia. Their Pioneer Block 3 43 Degrees Sauvignon Blanc 2015 has thus far won 3 Gold medals. Fresh, youth-ful wines that keep the environ-ment in mind.

Pinot Block 23, -14 is yet another bull’s-eye. Fine tannins from one of their master block aged in 40% new oak. Perfect to enjoy with a meal. Scrumptious.

Sam Smail is the Winemaker at Whitehaven Wine Company Limit-ed, more known as Whitehaven. The company became somewhat of a world famous en-terprise when Gallo went in as the new owner and presently bought the more than 150 ha that they still use today.

This year’s harvest started on the 20th of March. Their focus has pri-marily been on Sauvignon Blanc (90%), Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They make over 40 different products with Sauvignon Blanc. And because it is almost always windy here, they use wind ties, which is good for the grapes. They can also be used to remove frost if needed.

We tasted several Sauvignon Blancs, obviously all of which high quality. But the ones that stood out the most were a Noble Riesling -13 (9,5% alc) and a Pinot Noir -13, hand-picked and with big-time ele-gance and great tannins.

But what about the name? Well, the White family who started production here in Marlborough became so enamored with the lo-cation and all of its positives; they added “Heaven (Haven)” to their name. Why not, it seems fitting.

Napa, California:The 2016 harvest is finally over and Napa Valley has a chance to slow down and collectively catch its breath. A majority of the tourists have departed, surely to return en masse in the spring, but now the region alights with specials and holiday treats during what’s “Cabernet Season,” running from November to April.

Wineries, fine restaurants and ho-tels are much less crowded during this cool and sometimes rainy peri-od (California’s short winter) so it’s much easier to navigate and enjoy the area. The chefs serve heartier, more robust dishes that pair exqui-sitely with Napa Valley’s big Cab-ernets. “Napa is a special place,” said Ron Rasmussen, a restaura-teur visiting from South Carolina.

“Every vintner and winery has their own unique story.” Napa Valley, running north to south about 43 kilometers including the towns of Calistoga, St. Helena, Rutherford/Oakville, Yountville, the city of Napa and American Canyon in the south. This valley enjoys a fertile flat valley surrounded by gentle mountains. During most of the year, the climate is arid and hot, yet

with cool evening breezes, perfect for the production of superlative grapes, particularly big reds like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. So rent a car, bring a warm coat and scarf, find a sumptuous cozy hotel (like the Milliken Creek Inn & Spa www.millikencreekinn.com and be ready to explore one of the finest winemaking regions on earth.

Yountville is a very special small town and boasts more Michelin stars for its restaurants per capita, than any other place on earth. You can’t go wrong here. Pop into the small Bouchon Bakery for tasty breads and baked goods. And Cic-cio is a “locals” Italian restaurant. Reasonably priced with good wines. The City of Napa has come a long way recently. The county seat was once the working hub, but wasn’t where most travelers wanted to see. No more, today the city has many fabulous restaurants, prime lodgings (and more being built), shopping and more. Riders may hop on and off as they wish or enjoy the entire loop at one time www.donapa.com

An easy way to get around but really downtown Napa is flat and relative-ly small, so makes for an easy stroll.

FLYING’ NOTE - if traveling to Napa, I recommend flying in and out of the California State capital, Sacramento. The air-port is very modern, easy to navigate and faster getting to Napa Valley than from the other San Francisco Bay Area Airports. Napa Valley bound visitors have a veritable cornucopia of worthwhile choices this holiday season, each different and endear-ing. Hope to see you soon.

patriarche - bourgogne’s ambassador

PHOTO: JEAN-LOUIS BERNUY/CAMILLA ERICSON Patriarche enjoys a long history of wine production and commerce. Their story goes back to Beaune in 1780 with Jean-Baptiste Patriarche, who from the start shook things up and the results are still seen today. Their basic principles are built upon human values, attention to detail, loyalty and adaptability. These ideas might seem like givens today, but almost 250 years ago they were pioneering and provoking.

From the beginning, they focused on making quality, affordable wines, while still contributing to some of the unique times which have always arisen throughout history, when individuals jointly discover small possibilities in large and small formats.

This is especially true today as Pa-triarche, vintage after vintage, has established itself as the ambassador for the appellations in. The art of producing high (and the highest) quality wines is a result of acquired experience and knowledge over the hundreds of years, another aspect also central to Patriarche’s wine philosophy.

In the 1940s, André Boisseux led Patriarche and proclaimed that it was the employees, both men and women, who stood behind their successes since 1780. Mostly by contributing with their individual, personal competencies and abili-ties. Those factors also led to con-tinuity and development.

And then, we come to the terroir’s authenticity, something many peo-

ple discuss today, and which is a necessity for success. In some way or another, each wine has its own special image in Bourgogne.

Aging knowledge must also be considered. Casks, barrels or tanks, even those are important decisions for the appellation’s wines.

Bottle aging occurs in the cellar vault at Visandínerna in Beaune, which has a history from the 1600s. The vault attracts many new visi-tors every year, and not just those intending to see the vault itself, rather visitors who also want to see the 17th century chapel located in the same building.

”The vault was built between 1400 – 1700s and is over 5 km long”, explains Jean-Michel Gallette from Patriarche during his Stockholm visit to Fine Wine Tasting. When asked what is most important for Patriarche today, he exclaims that, ”Location is the key.”

They are and will most probably re-main successful.

Currently, Patriarche has 185 em-ployees and a turnover of about 115 million €.

The whole of Hong Kong is a meet-ing in and of itself. West meets East. The continent’s Kowloon meets Hong Kong Island. international, traditional wine in-dustry meets a modern Chinese market!

About 1000 wine producers have the opportunity to meet over 19,000 purchasers at the three day long Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair.

We’ve known for a long time that that there is a large interest for wine in Asia, but the 9th Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair proves that this is only the beginning of so-mething big.

HONG KONG AS A WINE MARKET

It has been almost twenty years since Hong Kong became a part of China again, but it is still the strongest economic center in the region. Between 2007 and 2015, wine imports to Hong Kong in-creased by 600%, which amounts to almost 12 billion SEK (about 1.5 billion USD). A large portion of the volume is sent further to other regions in China and other close-by markets. In other words, Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair is an important cog in the machinery.

ABOUT 1 000 PRODUCERS HAVE EXHIBITIONS, REPRESENTING THE ENTIRE WINE WORLD

The breadth of the exhibitors is large. All of the wine world’s most famous countries and regions are represented and get the most rec-ognition and attention. But many smaller producers, especially those from Australia, are testing the in-ternational waters here for the first time, with the hope of meeting new and larger markets.

The competition and getting no-ticed are both tough, and many Chinese producers want to stake their claims. They have an impres-sive spectrum of products, both in quality and grape diversity. Even lesser known regions are taking the chance to be seen, including coun-tries such as Azerbaijan and Mol-davia. Nobody wants to be left out.

FRANCE STILL DOMINATE

Despite all of the investments in newer origins, interest for French wines still dominates. An obvious

mutual interest. The French pavil-ion expands and the steady flow of visitors speaks volumes. Bordeaux, Bourgogne, Rhone, Loire… who can offer the classics at the most in-teresting prices?!

Other origins, which for China is a very important market, are get-ting attention, like the embold-ened, accessible markets Australia and Chile. Modern, available wines from flexible producers.

I left the convention a few times to visit several small wine shops. The big producers could easily be found on the shelves, and Hong Kong’s gener-ous tax laws make the prices reason-able. On the other hand, these wine houses aren’t the ones found among the exhibiting producers. This con-vention’s focus is on the hungry who want to come into – or expand in – the Chinese market.

HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL WINE & SPIRITS FAIR HAS EVOLVED FROM BEING SOLELY A CHINESE MARKET CONVENTION TO A GLOBAL MECCA FOR PURCHASERS

With so many producers present, it is not that strange that producers from around the world also attend. Even if the exhibitors focus on the Chinese market, they also get expo-sure to other markets. A deal with

Sweden is just as appealing as a deal with someone on another continent.

Today, the Hong Kong Interna-tional Wine & Spirits Fair is main-ly a convention for the Chinese market, but also a convention that attracts more and more purchasers from around the globe.

TREND FOR CHINESE WINES NOTHING NEW

Chinese wine business shows strong signs of growth and style develop-ment. The first time I tried Chinese wines ten years ago, I experienced tight, tannin-rich styles, strongly influenced by their French forefa-thers who once developed Chinese wine production. Today’s wines are much more generous, with a clear leaning towards what we have seen in Europe, especially appreciated in Northern Europe – soft wines with dominant sweet grapes.

Given that Chinese cuisine often combines sweetness with heat, the road the wines’ styles takes seems natural. Other origins may repre-sent a different direction, but obvi-ously one can easily find wines as-sociated with styles from the more renowned regions.

VISITING HONG KONG IS MUCH MORE THAN JUST ATTENDING A CONVENTION

Compared with other internation-al conventions, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Cen-tre (HKCEC) is centrally located. In the middle of Hong Kong with a little trip to Kowloon Bay, which gives the visitors a short five-min-ute walk to the bustling Wan Chai area. Just off the main streets, you can find food bars and diverse small restaurants. Just a cheap taxi ride away and you are in SoHo, where

the bar guests take over the streets and the restaurants open up out on the streets. Many of the high-rise bars offer guests a view from above where drinks and ice cream with wine are common sites in a natu-ral environment, far away from the sterile convention hall floor that just recently hosted the guests and wines.

To experience Hong Kong, get in-sight into the Asian wine industry and meet producers from across the globe, the Hong Kong Internation-al Wine & Spirits Fair gives you bang for your buck!

THE 2017 HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL WINE & SPIRITS FAIR WILL TAKE PLACE BETWEEN THE 9TH AND 11TH OF NOVEMBER (the final day is open to consumers).

grange 2012 sets the tone for the

penfolds collection 2016The new 2012 Grange vintage from southern Australia is their 62nd in a row, and this wine takes the throne of wines in The Penfolds Collection 2016. With Character and layers of en-ticing tastes, Grange 2012 is stylistically related the 1963 Grange, but with a ”2012” perso-nality. The Collection in its entirety is a display of red wines with striking finesse and aging potential, and impressive, complex and vigorous white wines. This is an expression of the Penfolds House’s style, preserved since 1844.

True to philosophy, the wines in The Collection ”can be opened and enjoyed right now, but also have the potential to be aged for decades,” Peter Gago, Penfolds Head Wine-maker. Wine Ark, one of Australia’s largest wine storage agents recently identified Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz as one of Australia’s most collect-

ed wine from a list of the 50 most collected wines in the country. This list comes out every third year and has become he obvious guide for collectable wines and presents a genuine reflection over the Austral-ian wines being stored, almost in real-time.

These 19 wines include five vintag-es, and this launch proudly displays that Penfolds stands among the best. The wines include grapes har-vested from many regions and vine-yards, and wines that originated from individual regions and indi-vidual vineyards. With these three distinct styles, Penfolds offers win-

emaking philosophy choices. The contemporary and singular ”one region persona” stands out as a true strength in the 2015 Reserve Bin A Adelaide Hills Chardonnay, newly proclaimed as Australia’s foremost Chardonnay at the 2016 ’James Halliday’s Chardonnay Challenge.´ Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 displays Penfolds knowledge and strength in selecting grapes from several regions and vineyards, and

the wine is described as ”structural-ly alive” by Peter Gago.

The official launch of The Collec-tion took place on October 20th, offering many highlights and vin-tages. St Henri Shiraz 2013 is magnificent and complex, and this vintage is a celebration of the 60th anniversary of its debut. This is an anniversary to proudly put on dis-play the reverent and alternative

expression of Shiraz that St Henri personifies.

The Penfolds Collection 2016 is the ultimate proof of the expertise, passion and experience embodied in the Penfolds winemaking team, an homage to the continuing sto-ry of character, quality and prove-nance, known and appreciated by collectors across the globe.

marchesi antinoriTEXT:JAN HOLMSTRÖM

Marchesi Antinori have grown and sold wine since 1385. Today, they are one of the oldest and most powerful wine families in the world, and their significance for Italien wines cannot be put into words. Antinori is the largest and most quality-aware Italy has to offer.

Currently, Piero Antinori and daughters Albiera, Allegra, and Alessia run the company. This 26th generation continues their eight-century span.

”Tradition plays a major part in our work, but it has never kept us from trying new ideas,” says Piero Antinori.

The Antinori family hails from Florence, and their original prop-

erties are still located in Tuscany and the neighboring province Um-bria. There isn’t a single appellation in Tuscany that the family doesn’t have a wine representing, and their wines are always among the best. The same thing can be said about other wine regions, like Piedmont and Puglia.

Presently, they also own vineyards in other parts of the world, and Piero Antinori believes the family

has a responsibility to create great wines in lots of other places than just in Italy.

”We have shown that it is possible to make internationally renowned wines while still retaining the or-igin’s characteristics, whether it be in Tuscany or Umbria. So why shouldn’t that concept work in oth-er places around the world?”

The Antinori family are well aware that labor-intensive quality work is required if their vision is to be fulfilled. There are no shortcuts or hacks in achieving recognition and respect. Additionally, constant cre-ativity and new ways of thinking have to be added into the mix in order to reach their goals.

Tignanello I a prime example. The family broke some taboos in Chi-anti and created an entirely new trend. Tignanello is made with grapes from individual vineyards, was the first Sangiovese wine aged in oak barrels, and didn’t contain the obligatory white grapes, but rather used some cabernet sauvi-gnon and cabernet franc, grapes from Bordeaux.

An important aspect of this sto-ry is that Piere Antinori, through relatives, also had a hand in other enormous successes that Sassicaia crated in Bolgheri, by the Tuscan coast. Based entirely on French grapes, Sassicaia obviously led to a positive development for the flag ship Tignanello.

Italy is home Marchesi Antinori, and it is there that the Italian fam-ily business has its roots and oper-ations, even though their interests span the globe.

The architecturally beautiful, spec-tacular, newly built winery in the heart of Chianti Classico, just be-side the classic autostrada between Florence and Siena, is yet another example of Marchesi Antinori’s engagement in his home town, as well as for the quality development of his wines. The winery attracts both wine tourist and architecture enthusiasts, and is designed so as to have the least amount of environ-mental impact possible.

The 26th generation stands tall, and is prepared for the future.

for game!CHRISTOPHER JARNVALL

Fall is upon us once again, and so too hunting season (I think I’ve started an article using the same words before, but it still sounds good nonetheless and cuts to the chase). It is especi-ally inspiring to write about game and good wine while Moose season is in full swing out in the countryside, and the wines are waiting to accompany the meals. This is also the time of year when Fine Wine has its annual ”Tasting” – these days in Kunsträdgården in Stockholm where you don’t hear many shots being fired…

This year, I had only planned on trying the really fine reds that might suit a good bird or hoofed game animal - European animals, similar to those from New Zea-land, South Africa or South America. Even though these are rari-ties here in Sweden…

If we take a few really good European game wines, Spain comes to mind first. Edetària Tinto (Edetària) is perfect with wild boar or stag. This wine is available to or-der from Systembolaget for SEK 239:-.

Since we’re already talking about wild boar, I can recommend the Ital-ian Batzella Tâm Bolgheri Superiore (Batzella), available in Systembola-get’s base assortment for SEK 349:-. An exquisite bottle of wine that will make a huge difference with your wild boar steaks! Or, another option is also Italian, Villa Rizzardi Amarone Classico 2009 (Guerrieri Rizzardi). This one is also perfect to enjoy with those wild pigs!

For moose and elk, I’d also choose

the super elegant Itlalian Brunello di Montalcino (Casanova di Neri), also available through Systemolaget’s base assortment for SEK 399:-. Or why not try the lovely French Gig-ondas (Domaine la Fourmone) after the hunt? Also available in the base assortment for SEK 209:-. A great wine with elk!

Now, let’s get to the birds - like partridge and pheasant – and try something really good! I’m thinking something big like Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru 2006 (Domaine Bertag-na). Can be ordered for SEK 949:-, so you might want to limit the num-ber of guests…

If you plan on serving bird and want to try something less expen-

sive, why not look to New Zealand? This is the Pinot Noir grape’s chosen land! I would love to drink Nauti-lus Pinot Noir 2013 (Nau-tilus Estate) or Carrick Ban-nockburn Pinot Noir 2013 (Carric Wines). The former can be ordered for SEK 235:-, and the latter is avail-able in the base assortment for SEK 199:-. Wonderful duck wines!

And let’s not forget about South Africa! You can find so much tasty game here: zebra, impala, gnu… If i had to choose one wine from Fine Wine Tasting 2016, it would have to be Alto MPHS 2011 (Alto Estate, Stellenbosch) from Systembolaget. Can be ordered for SEK 549:- and is a beautiful wine. But then you just have to arrange for the zebra or gnu…

Finally, we end up in wine-tight Argentina, and I can strongly rec-ommend Trapiche Gran Medalla (Trapiche) which can be ordered for SEK 185:- through Systembolaget. This is a wonderful wine to enjoy with elk. Either on site in Argentina or in Sweden after the elk hunt!

Enjoy!

EXCEPTIONAL TERROIRSUNIQUE CRAFTSMANSHIP

”Making a great Cognac is easy. All you need is a great-

grandfather, a grandfather and a father who have done

it before you.”

JEAN - PAUL CAMUS

FIVE GENERATIONS, ONE GOAL – CREATING OUTSTANDING COGNACSSince 1863, five generations of the CAMUS family have cultivated a single-minded passion for crafting great Cognac with their own style, bringing to life the infinite richness and soul of the land that is their home.

FROM THE SOIL TO THE BOTTLE

With 180 hectares in the smallest and rarest cru - Borderies - renowned for producing eaux-de-vie with an intense floral bouquet and excellent ageing qualities - the Camus family has always been deeply involved in winemaking and distill-ing. It is this unbreakable bond between the land, the tra-ditions and the men who live on it, that helps craft superb Cognacs.

KEY FIGURES

• 180 hectares (445 acres) of vineyards in the Borderies cru

• 200 wine-growing partners, 50 of whom distill their har-vest exclusively for CAMUS

• 1 distillery with 8 copper stills of 25hL capacity.

• Total storage at the La Nerolle site for 100 000 hl of eaux-de-vie, including ageing, blending and stocks

• 5 bottling lines

• 3 Quality Certifications: ISO 9001 (2002), ISO 22000 (2009) and BRC - British Retail Consortium – (2016).

THE ART OF COGNAC, COGNAC BY LAW

To guarantee consistent product quality, Cognac produc-tion is subject to extremely stringent regulatory measures monitored by the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac (BNIC).

In 1936 the Cognac area was defined an Appellation d’Orig-ine Contrôlée (AOC) of six growth areas (crus), divided according to their geological structure (terroirs): Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, Fins Bois, Bons Bois and Bois à Terroirs.

AN INHERITED COMMITMENT TO QUALITY

True to its values of craftsmanship, passion and quality since its foundation in 1863, the House of CAMUS has been head-ed by a direct descendent of the founder, upholding the family tradition for quality and maintaining the style of the products, over the generations.

CAMUS draws on the richness and diversity of the whole AOC region – using mostly Ugni Blanc but also some Folle Blanche and Colombard varietals - to produce the wine that will be distilled into a unique range of superlative Cognacs.

Distillation, or rather double distillation as imposed by AOC law, is a crucial part of Cognac-making. At CAMUS, we choose to retain some of the lees to reveal the typical char-acteristics of each eau-de-vie and terroir. This intricate pro-cess is continuously scrutinized by the Cellar Master Patrick Léger, whose subtle nose and skills guarantee the distinc-tive aromas and taste of CAMUS’ Cognac style.

All CAMUS Cognacs are aged in small French fine to medi-um-grained oak barrels which are carefully chosen to re-spect the character of the original eaux-de-vie and achieve a perfect balance with light tannin content, procuring their inimitable roundness and aromatic qualities. Under the careful guidance of Patrick Léger, cooperages Camus works with, make sure that our barrels are heated and medium toasted according to very strict specifications. The desired result is a lighter Cognac which reveals all the aromatic po-tential of the fruit without being over powered by the oak.

BY SÖREN NYLUND, AUTHORIZED VALUER FOR FINE WINE & SPIRITS AND OTHER ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

FINE WINE & SPIRITS AUCTION 12TH – 14TH DECEMBER!

Welcome to the final auction of the year.

This eighth auction of the year is also the year’s largest, with around diverse 800 objects. Pretty much every corner of the wine world and the most influential and famous regions will be represented. Classic wines from renowned vintages and noble, long-time aged distilled items will all go under the club, but also lighter spirits whose drops haven’t even seen the inside of a barrel.

There is cognac and port from days long gone, before phyl-loxera ravaged so many European vineyards. There will also be some historic whiskeys from long closed distiller-

ies, whose souls and bodies cannot be recreated. In other words, historic items and possible new such ones, that will participate in this year’s final auction.

WHITE WINES

The auction will take place over three days, from the 12th to the 14th of December, with white wines beginning on the 12th. Salon in magnums from 1988, Selosse Blanc de Blanc from 1990. There are also magnums of Bolinger RD 1999 and Cristal 2000. In complete original cases, there is Salon 1996 along with Krug and Cuvée Winston Churchill. Among the stills are Musigny Blanc 1990 from Domaine de Vogüe and Le Montrachet 2009 from Domaine Romanée Conti. Sweet wines include items such as complete cases of d’Yquem 1983 and 2001.

RED WINES FROM FRANCE: BORDEAUX & BOURGOGNE

A few mixed lots start the auction’s second day. One exam-ple is a series of eleven Mouton Rothschild vintages from 1976 till 1997, followed by several bottles from 1948 from the same property. Not much was expected from this vin-tage during the cold and rainy June, but the weather pat-terns changed to warm and dry, lending the perfect condi-tions for grape development and ripening. The harvest was relatively small and is characterized by hard tannins and the long time it took share its elegance. Unfortunately, the 1948 landed in between the famous 1947 and 1949 vintag-es. Otherwise, experts would have named the 1948 vintage more in terms of a ”classic.”

From the complete case wines, which make up an unusu-ally large group in this December auction, there are items like Vieux Château Certan 1982 & 1986. Mouton from 1983, Conseillante and Palmer 1986, La Fleur-Pétrus 1989 & 2008, Lynch-Bages and Talbot 1995, Kirwan 1996, Baron Pichon Longueville 1998, Gruaud Larose 1999, Pontet Canet 2003 and Mouton 2006, and many others…

Individual bottles include 1989 Haut Brion – magnum.

From Bourgogne, we have Romanée Conti 1989 with a wa-ter-damaged label marked by the years. But beauty is found on the inside, as it were. The bottle’s contents were carefully created by the winemaker many times over with courage and through hard work, and bottled for the future. Other objects include Musigny Vielles Vignes from Domaine de Vogüe, and bottles from Henri Pierre Minot, Jean Grivot och Francois Parent are more examples. From a little more north comes Bollinger’s red La Côteaux Enfants, and from a neigh-bor to the south Janasse Cuvée Chaupin.

OTHER RED WINES

If Day Two wasn’t robust enough, Day Three proves to be even tougher. Around 400 objects from Italy, Spain, Califor-nia, Australia and other countries, including fortified wines and various distilled items, all come together on this the fi-nal day.

From Spain, there is el Pisón, and from Oregon Beaux Fréres in various representations. California is present with Ridge, Saintsbury, Shafer, Blankiet, Dunn and Sine Qua Non. From Australien, many Penfolds varieties, including several Grange and Bin 620. But most of the wines in this group come from Italy. About 80 objects up for bid, including Barolo’s like Gia-como Borgogno and Gaja. Tuscany’s Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Produtti del Barbaresco with varying origins like Asili, Raba-ja, Pora are Montestefano just a few examples.

FORTIFIED WINES AND DISTILLEDS

From the fortified wines, a well-aged tawny from 1855 stands out. It is the result of two still-existing barrels that have sur-vived the most. It was bottled in a crystal carafe in 2010 and placed in a handcrafted wooden case after 155 years of aging. This may be n old object, but the oldest is still the de Luze co-gnac from 1854, that despite its age is still in good condition. These two items from historic times, both from grapes grown and harvested prior to the devastation caused by phylloxera and their march across European vineyards.

Among the whiskies one can find some objects that seldom come up for auction, which continue to become fewer and fewer as the years pass, even though the demand increases. Items from no-longer-existing distilleries include Lowland whiskies Ladyburn 1973 and St Magdalene 1979, the High-land Brora 1975 and 28-year Brechin. From active distiller-ies come Glenfiddich 1965, Balvenie 1972, Girvan 1964, just to name a few of the 200 whiskey objects. The aforemen-tioned items are Scottish, but even Japanese whiskies are also present in the form of Hibiki, Nikka, Chichibu and the

now-closed Hanyu, with, for example, a few single cask vari-ations and ”The Final Vintage”.

But there is a Scott from Speyside in the Highlands that on this day and at this auction dominates the field:

Macallan 60 Years Old Lalique Decanter “Curiously Small Stills Decanter”

The fourth edition in The Six Pillars Collection is one of the oldest and most rare whiskies ever bottled by Distillery. The Macallan 60 years old was drawn from some of the house’s oldest stocks. They were housed in five sherry butts, made from a mix of Spanish and American oak and filled 9th and 10th of November 1950. The copper cap on the crys-tal stopper is made from an old Macallan copper spirit still. Presented in a high-polish black lacquer box, each decanter is individually numbered - one of 400 in this special limit-ed edition. Macallan Lalique is a collaboration between the Macallan Speyside Distillery and the French crystal house of Lalique. This is the highest valued object in this auction, starting price 250,000 SEK (over 27,000 USD).

But it isn’t only the distilled grains participating; there are even fermented items in the form of beer – like Westvleter-en in original cases and even several older brandy items such as calvados Coeur de Lion 1939 and Marc de Bour-gogne from 1949 and Fine Bourgogne 1979 from Domaine Romanée Conti.

This is the last auction this year. But we’ll start again in March 2017. So I want to take the opportunity to wish everyone Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year – but first:

ZACHYS TO AUCTION CELLAR OF FAMED NÉGOCIANT NATH. JOHNSTON & FILS AND ANCIENT WINES FROM DOMAINE FAIVELEY

Zachys is delighted to announce The Holiday Auction on December 2 and 3 at Smith & Wollensky, New York City, a 1962-lot auction expected to realize in excess of US$7,000,000.

Of particular note in this two-day auction is the Private Cellar of Nath. Johnston & Fils, a Bordeaux négoci-ant founded in 1734 and still owned by the current generation of John-stons. The Johnstons at one point owned Châteaux Ducru-Beaucail-lou and Dauzac and nine percent of Château Latour. The wines in this collection were assembled by vari-ous generations of Johnstons, were bought on release direct from the Châteaux themselves, and hadn’t left Bordeaux prior to being shipped to Zachys for this auction. Without a doubt the highlight of the auction is a 4.5 liter jeroboam (US$30,000-$50,000) and six bottles of Pétrus 1924, bottles that were bought on release, and reconditioned at Pétrus in the 1980s by Jean-Claude Berrouet, with the approval of the Moueix family. Zachys expects the jeroboam to set a world auction record for the wine. The rest of the offering is just as amazing—First and Second Growths, Sauternes and even Bordeaux blanc, all dating back to 1916, many with official letters of reconditioning and authenticity direct from the Châteaux.

Zachys is also proud to offer a deep selection of fine wines Direct from the Faiveley Family Cellars. Of particular note

in this consignment is 12 Grands Crus of Faiveley, all packaged together and numbered 0001, and two bottles that survived the Nazi invasion of France. As Erwan Faiveley, winemaker and Di-rector, told Zachys, “the 1928 and 1933 were both made by Georges Faiveley, my great grandfather. When the Ger-mans invaded France during the Second World War, he loaded a few hundred cases in two lorries and drove them to his vacation house in the middle of the Morvan. It was a beautiful property on a lake, with a small chapel on the shore. Under that chapel was a crypt, and that’s where he decided to bury them. Just a

few weeks later, the Nazis invaded the Morvan. That house was then confiscated by the Germans to become their head-quarters. They stayed there for two years, and never found the wines… Those two bottles are survivors!” And now they can be yours!

Finally, after the success of a Spotlight on Italy in 2015, Zach-ys is delighted to offer more wines from Tuscany and Pied-mont, including one of the largest selections of Masseto in private hands ever to come to auction, as well as large for-mats of the 2006 vintage.

Please contact Zachys at auction [at] zachys [dot] com for more information.

BONHAMS FINE WINE SALE IN LONDON, THURSDAY 8 DECEMBER OFFERS ALL THE ESSENTIALS FOR THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS DINNER

Champagne is the guaranteed way to start the big day off on the right note and Bonhams December Fine Wine Sale offers plenty of choice. Among a total of more than 50 lots of fizz there are 15 vintages of Dom Pérignon to choose from, of which highlights include a single bottle of 1949 (£350-450), six bottles of 1964 (£1,800-2,200) and a dozen of 1971 (£3,500-4,200).

Smoked salmon has become a standard of many Christmas tables and there is a strong argument to be made for pairing it with white Burgun-dy. The sale offers the chance to acquire a case of the superb Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet 2002 (£3,500-4,000) or a Jeroboam of Do-maine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet 2002 (£900-1,000).

On the other hand, if you feel yet more champagne is called for, the ev-er-fresh Salon Blanc de Blancs 1990 (3,200-3,800 for a case of 6 bottles) or 6 magnums of Pol Roger, Cuvee Winston Churchill 1982 (£3,000-4,000) are more than capable of holding their own against the rich salmon. Bet-ter yet, save yourself the tiresome task of opening all those bottles and plump for a three litre Jeroboam of Louis Roederer Cristal 1999 (£850-1100) or a six litre Methuselah of Louis Roederer Cristal 1990 (3,200-3,800).

For the turkey or goose, International Head of Bonhams Wine Depart-ment and Master of Wine, Richard Harvey, recommends one of the magnificent mature clarets to be offered from a private collection that includes six vintages of Pétrus, from 1947 to 1979, and a case of Mouton Rothschild 1982 (£9,000-11,000).

A rare lot of four half litre bottles of the Tokaji Aszú Essencia 1963 (£320-400) represents the perfect match with Christmas pudding; this lush To-kaji demonstrates a concentration and intensity of flavour that is unri-valled.

As Richard says, “Christmas is the time to break out something special. We always have a wide range of unusual and distinctive wines in our Decem-ber sale and this year is no exception. It’s difficult to pick a favourite but the two bottles

of Meo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée au Cros Parantoux 2001 (£1,300-1,500) and the case of Penfold’s Grange 1986 (£3,500-4,200) would be hard to resist.”

For many, Port remains inextricably linked to Christmas day; 6 bottles of Graham’s legendary 1945 vintage (£3,000-4,000) will also be offered in the December sale.
