Buddhism from a Cat’s Perspectiveguest article by sapphire
The other day I was helping Harry, my human, on his
computer. Maybe you saw the picture on facebook? He has a problem with procrastination, so I thought I would try and lend a hand, or paw as the case may be.
I am a very fortunate cat. My sister Luna and I were adopted by Harry and his wife when we were nine years old. It is very difficult for older cats to be ad-opted – many people want kittens because they are cute. But older cats are cute too! In fact, an older cat’s personality is already settled so you have a better idea what your new companion will be like. I consider myself pretty mellow, but my sister can be mean to me sometimes. I chalk it up to her gastrointestinal problems. We still cuddle together when it gets cold and there are no laps to sit on.
Since this is the Busshin, I guess I’m supposed to talk about Buddhism a little bit. Cats are often associated with Zen. For instance, it is said that when the Buddha passed away that the cat didn’t show up, but there is a Zen version of the painting with a cat in the corner! Cats are often said to be the caretakers of some kind of mysterious wisdom as well. One of my favorite koans is “Door open – stay in. Door closed – go out!” If you ever see a cat with a far-away expression, they just might be meditating on the deeper meaning of life.
I think that Jodo Shinshu fits for cats too. Just like humans, we are often slaves to our desires – food, water, snacks, a warm lap to sleep on. But even though I might not show it, I feel extremely grateful to Harry for rescuing me from the shelter and giving my sister and me a home.

Church MaintenanceDid you know the church has
a fantastic group of superheroes who fix up and maintain the church, the Issei Kaikan, the grounds, and the apartment build-ing? Last month, these volunteers painted out grafitti, installed new tarps, fixed the kitchen sink, planned a railing to be installed in the Nokotsudo, and installed thresholds on the outside doors of the church kitchen. Kudos to these gentlemen: Al Kanzaki, Dennis Katayama, John Mina-moto, Dick Sasaki, Mark Shi-mamoto, Cliff Yokomizo, and Tom Yokomizo!
Thanks to the NewlywedsThe church gives many thanks to
newlyweds Ben & Talaya Hama-moto for their donation of paper goods, granola bars, almonds and ramen to the Keiro Kai mem-bers’ Appreciation Luncheon and tablecloths to the church; and we thank Jun Donna Hamamoto, mother of the groom, for deliv-ering the items as their donation for use of the social hall for their wedding reception.

Board Member InterviewThis month: Donna Yokomizo
BCO Member interview: Donna Yokomizo, retired
What I love about being retired is having the opportunity and flexibility to learn new things. Whether that’s through taking classes, going to performances and lectures, traveling, spend-ing more time with family and friends, volunteering, or re-searching things on the internet there are lots of things to do now that there’s more time. For almost forty years I was an educator in the San Ramon Valley school dis-trict. I taught at the elementary level as a classroom teacher, a sci-ence specialist, and a technology specialist, ending my career as an administrator. It was great fun to have had the chance to teach both children and adults.
My husband Cliff and I live in Dublin. We have two married children and two grandchildren.
The Yokomizo family has a strong presence in the BCO. Tony and Nowie Yokomizo (Cliff’s parents) were pioneers in the church. Cliff is a former church president. Sisters in law Joyce and Denise Yokomizo are well respected for all their hard work as contributors to BCO. Tom Yo-komizo (Cliff’s uncle) is a valued member and volunteer. Matsuye Tani is Cliff’s aunt. Peter Nakaso and I have a common aunt.

Bucket listThere are so many places to
go and things to do that my list grows daily. Currently New Zealand, Alaska’s inner passage, and Italy are high on the list for destinations.
Little known factFor many years I was the area
coordinator for Hands on Science Outreach, an after school science enrichment program. I established programs in several schools in Al-ameda and Contra Costa County and was responsible for recruit-ing, training, and supervising the instructors. It was fantastic to bring science to so many children throughout the area.
Board can accomplishWe have a big responsibility to
keep the future of BCO in mind as we make decisions and take care of the business of the church. I hope that BCO will continue to grow its membership and prosper as it faces many challenges that the changing world presents.

a community of learners and strengthening our own knowl-edge of Buddhism.

Roof Renovation Campaign Statusby steve terusaki
We have begun a push to encourage participa-
tion in the Roof Campaign by all members of the church as we enter the last months of the Campaign. Letters have gone out to those who have not yet made contributions and individual phone calls are being made. From that effort we are seeing positive results and increased donations. For the month of October, there were 22 new donors to the Cam-paign; donation receipts totaled nearly $6,000. We are nearing the $300,000 mark in the Campaign with $108,700 to go to reach our $400,000 Campaign goal. Thank you to all who have participated.
As we talk to our members we have continued to tell the story of how important the project has been to the integrity of the church. 84 years old, the orna-
mental wood members of the roof were dry-rotted; and falling off onto the sidewalks below. The interface between the ornamental wood and the metal roof panels were the sources of much of the water leaks during winter rains. The project has been a success and the replacement of ornamen-tal wood members and the repairs at critical junctures between the roof panels and the ornamental pieces have stopped all the water problems that the church had been experiencing for many years. To complete the project we need to fulfill our Campaign target of $400,000 to repay monies to the Eitaikyo Fund and to establish a fund to cover future maintenance issues associated with the roof.
Thank you again for your gener-ous dana and your unwavering support.

Momiji Kai Newsby NaNcy yamamoto
Our meeting on Thursday October 20, 2011, was a
planned to go out to lunch day but changed our plans and brought in lunch which was relaxing and enjoyed by everyone. We have Miyo Shigemoto to thank for planning this luncheon.
Jean Nakazono had suggested that we should have an discus-sion on what to do about our worldly possession so asked our
sensei, Rev. Bridge, because of his constant moves, to moderate on the topic of what should we do. We decided he would be the person to chair and he graciously agreed. Sensei gave his theory on what he had done in the past to alleviate some of his belongings which was interesting.
We seniors are at a point where we are thinking about what to do with our possessions, some new,
some old but useful. How does one get rid of these possessions. Our children don’t seem to want what we consider as great and usable material.
They seem to pooh pooh the idea of getting hand me downs from their parents. Their tastes in material things are quite different from ours, so we are left hanging on a limb.
Some of the participants gave their views and input on what they have done or are doing. Some great ideas were suggested during the discussions. Any wonderful ideas from the members at large certainly would be appreciated.
Our next session will be on November 3, 2011. Plans for a December get-together are now being formulated and we welcome any new members along with the present members. Happy Hal-loween!!! or maybe I should say Happy Thanksgiving!!! as this will probably come out in the Novem-ber issue of the Busshin.

No sooner the games ended, the Halloween revel-ers were off to the spooky haunted house created by the JR YBA. Their creativity always astounds me. Thank you, JR YBA. The festivi-ties concluded with a hearty pizza, salad, and fruit luncheon. Thank you, Daisy Tsujimoto and Joni Hiramoto for co-chairing and orga-nizing the wonderful meal. Thank you Gail Cho for doing the grocery shopping and a special thank you to our Pizza Chefs: Ron Nomura, Gary Tominaga and Steve Hara and Kitchen Crew, Mika Bridge, Donna Castro, Jun Hamamoto, June Nomura, Bonnie Okamura, Tak Otsuka, Valerie Otsuka, Ann Tominaga, Mollie Yoneyama and Janet Umezu who helped set up, prepare the food and clean up.
