Reflections on the Sunday Scripture
December 9, 2018
Second Sunday of Advent
Readings:
Baruch 5:1-9
Philippians 1:4-6, 8-11
Luke 3:1-6
Gospel
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the desert. John went throughout the whole region of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah:
A voice of one crying out in the desert: "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God."
1. The first reading and Gospel readings show the lowering of lofty mountains and the raising up of the valleys. This symbolically describes our spiritual goals as we prepare for the coming of the Kingdom. As we prepare the way for Jesus to be born anew into our hearts this Christmas, what are the valleys (the low parts of ourselves) we are called to fill in? Which mountains within our lives (pride, greed, anger) must be made low?
2. Both John and Jesus experience a period of time in the desert taking on their ministry. Where might you cultivate desert places in your life where you go to be with God?
(continued)
3. Considering what is happening today, should we work on a renewal of the concerns of society more than our individual lives? Or should we do both?
4. Are we preparing for “the new heaven and new earth where justice dwells” by making our world a holy and wholesome place? Are we reforming our own lives through economic issues, social issues, and political issues with the principles of Christ’s Gospel?
Christmas Evangelization
Christmas is a time of Joy and Sharing.
Share your love of Jesus with your family,
friends, and neighbors this Christmas.
The birth of Jesus is the beginning of His
earthly life, and is a reminder of the
Eternal Life that He offers to His
Faithful Followers.
Please invite others to celebrate Christmas
Mass at St. Mark. If they don’t live nearby,
we can always suggest that they attend a
church near them.
We need to be faithful to Our Lord and
share His Eternal Love with others!

Thank you for your generosity!
For many weeks now, we have been asking for help from you for two of our ministries which are very short of people to serve at the Mass Liturgies as ushers and sacristans.
Father Mariusz asked us at Thanksgiving Mass, “Are we thankful for St. Mark’s or do we just take it for granted?” Do you appreciate the beauty and the Blessings of this Parish of ours?
If you do, and you are of able body to serve, please consider doing so today. Due to illness, moves, and several deaths, we have lost people who for years have
been serving you each week as ushers or as sacristans for our Mass Liturgy.
The volunteers at St. Mark are a remarkable group of people. Many serve in multiple ministries, giving of their time and talents in appreciation for this wonderful
Parish of ours. They have an appreciation for and a love for St. Mark’s. Do you?
Please consider serving as an usher or as a sacristan….it’s only a few hours each month and one-on-one training and instruction is provided.
For ushers - contact Gerry Becker at 352-259-8359 or Jed Hayden at 352-775-4279.
For sacristans - contact Jay Clooney at 352-259-4215.

Free Medical Clinic Opening in Leesburg
The Lazarus Free Medical Clinic, a program of Catholic Charities of Central Florida, in partnership with the San Pedro de Jesus Maldonado Catholic Mission, is opening an extension of the Wildwood-based clinic at the St. Paul Catholic Community in Leesburg in January. This free medical facility will provide free dental care to the uninsured. Whether insured or uninsured, access to dental care in Central Florida is exceptionally challenging. In Lake County, there is only one dentist for every 2,190 residents and shockingly, only one dentist for every 4,130 in Sumter County.
Thanks to the generosity and support of the St. Paul Catholic Community, the Lazarus Dental Clinic will serve uninsured individuals living at or below 200% of the poverty level with professional, quality dental care at no cost. We are currently recruiting dental care professionals and clerical volunteers to join the clinic.
We are also looking for volunteers from your parish. People can volunteer as often as they like, there are no minimum requirements. Anyone interested in volunteering can call Erin Burley (Clinic Manager) at 352-602-4640 or email at [email protected] to learn more. You can also contact Catholic Charities Senior Director of Healthcare Services, Jen Stephenson-Crouch, at 407-913-5005 or email [email protected].
Father Mariusz and Deacon John Rumplasch, our Catholic Charities Ambassador, will be invited to the opening and blessing of this new clinic at St. Paul’s Parish in January.
Come and tour St. Mark
on Thursday, December 20th, at 1:30 PM.
See our Church in a whole new way after this tour! For instance, do you know
where St. Mother Teresa’s autographed picture is located?
Or do you know which Pope blessed our precious Black Madonna icon?
Our team is excited to share the surprising
stories about the beautiful artworks within St. Mark.
We most cordially invite you to join a tour and increase your pride in our lovely church
— even if you have toured in the past.
You may be surprised at all that you missed!
You need no reservation to attend. Meet us in the Narthex!

If you are hospitalized here at The
Villages Hospital, please remember:
When you are in the hospital, let Admitting know that you are a Catholic and would like to be on the list for Visitation and Communion.
If your condition changes and you want an Anointing, St. Timothy’s will send a priest. If you want a Clergy from St. Mark for Anointing, call the office to schedule.
The Villages Hospital is served by all three Parishes for Communion: — St. Mark goes Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays — St. Vincent de Paul goes Mondays — St. Timothy goes Wednesdays, Fridays, Sundays
ST. MARK NEEDS YOU!!!
If you missed reading page 8, do it now! St. Mark needs
your immediate help.
Don’t be someone who just assumes “someone else will do it.”
Please consider being that “someone” and give something back to St. Mark’s.
