The world does not seem big enough to contain the jubilation of the first reading. In the Gospel reading, the Roman empire isn’t

big enough, either. The great powers of Rome are named and made to stand waiting for the arrival of God’s salvation. And we find Paul meditating joyfully on what really matters. According to Baruch, the city of Jerusalem is like a person standing on tiptoe looking for God’s salvation, which is coming from the east. Those who were led away on foot, heads down, now come back, a proud people. Why, the very way is smoothed out. The path is lined with fragrant, lush trees. It can’t get any better than this, can it? Well, yes, it can. For a voice calls out in the desert. Here is the beginning of the salvation of God.

No puede haber algo mejor que eso, ¿no es así? Bueno, sí puede haber algo mejor. Porque una voz grita en el desierto. Aquí comienza la salvación de Dios.

WHAT ARE POSADAS? The festivities will be in full swing with the b e g i n n i n g o f t h e “posadas” celebrated each evening from December 16 to 24 at St Alexander.

Posadas are, in fact, a novena of nine days of religious observance based on the nine months that Maria carried Jesus in her womb. The posadas re-enact Mary and Joseph's cold and difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of shelter or "lodging."

Traditionally parishioners gather with their children and two young people may dress as Mary and Joseph. In a song Mary and Joseph ask for lodging but the “guests” sing back a refusal to let them in. One group each evening prepares a treat of hot chocolate, cookies, steaming hot tamales and other festive foods.

The party may end with the breaking of a piñata. The last posada may be held on December 24 and children may “rock” the Baby Jesus in a small blanket while singing a lullaby and then go midnight mass. This tradition lives on in countless Mexican towns and in USA cities.

¿QUÉ SON LAS POSADAS?

Las festividades están en pleno apogeo con el inicio de las posadas, que se celebran cada noche del 16 al 24 de diciembre en San Alejandro.

Las posadas son, de hecho, un "novenario" de nueve días de observancia religiosa basada en los nueve meses que María llevó a Jesús en su vientre. Las posadas recrean el frío y difícil viaje de María y José de Nazaret a Belén en busca de refugio o "alojamiento".

Tradicionalmente, los feligreses se reúnen con sus hijos y dos jóvenes pueden vestirse como María y José. En una canción, Maria y Jose piden alojamiento, pero los "invitados" cantan la negativa no los dejan entrar. Un grupo cada noche prepara bocadillos de champurrado, galletas, tamales calientes y otras comidas festivas.

La fiesta puede terminar con la ruptura de una piñata. La última posada se puede llevar a cabo el 24 de diciembre y los niños pueden "arrollar" al Niño Jesús en una pequeña manta mientras cantan una canción de cuna y luego pasan a la misa de medianoche u otro horario. Esta tradición vive en innumerables ciudades mexicanas y en ciudades de Estados Unidos.
