December 6, 2015 Second Sunday

Of Advent

St. Joseph Church, 7240 W. 57th St.,

Summit, Illinois, 60501-1324

John went throughout the whole region of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

Luke 3:3

This Sunday, St. John the Baptist makes his appearance once again in Advent. After setting the scene, by giving a political context of rulers, the Gospel of Luke introduces us to John the Baptist, who is in the wilderness. John is announcing the imminent coming of the Messiah by proclaiming “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” As we listen to the preaching of St. John the Baptist on this Second Sunday of Advent, I have selected a beautiful painting by Paolo Veronese entitled John the Baptist Preaching (1562). It is currently on display in Rome.

When looking at this painting, something struck my attention immediately. Nothing in this image is straight. Everything is crooked. The trees grow in weird angles, John the Baptist is tilted, two kneeling women are hunched over, and none of the remaining standing figures are standing straight either. Paolo Veronese paints everything at an angle to resonate John the Baptist’s message, “make straight his paths.” Without Christ, our life is crooked. Without Christ, we can’t live or stand straight.

Yet, our response to the words of St. John the Baptist is expressed in the three large figures, standing to the right of him. These three men’s faces express defiance and resistance. Isn’t that our response to the word of God all too often in our lives? We are defiant and resistant. “There’s nothing wrong with me! I’m not crooked.” When in reality, we are not standing straight, like the figures in Veronese’s painting. This Advent, let us take the words of St. John the Baptist to heart. Whatever is crooked, angled, and not straight in our lives, let us ask Christ for his grace to help us make straight his paths in our lives.

Thank you to the parishioners who donated non-perishable food items for the poor before Thanksgiving, which were donated to Catholic Charities (located at St. Blase) to help their food pantry and soup kitchen. Mr. Porod informed me that our students collected 17 full boxes of food (enough to fill an entire van!) and from the Sunday masses, we collected one box and four grocery bags of food donations. The sisters who operate the food pantry and soup kitchen were very delighted and grateful for support and kindness. We will be collecting non-perishable food items again before Christmas to help support the Catholic Charities food pantry and soup kitchen in our neighborhood. If you would like to help, please deposit your food donations in the corner of the narthex by the papal flag and Pope Francis. May God bless you for your corporal work of mercy and concern for the poor and hungry, who are our neighbors in this area.

Thank you to our Holy Name Society for hosting the coffee and cake social following our Thanksgiving Day Mass, and for sponsoring a Thanksgiving meal to a homebound parishioner. The Holy Name is also organizing our annual Christmas Giving Tree. Thank you to our Holy Name for organizing this kind work of charity again, and thank you to our parishioners, who make the Christmas Giving Tree possible, by buying gifts for some poor and needy children. If you were not able to take a name, but would still like to help, you may still buy a toy, wrap it, mark it with a tag indicating boy or girl and age, and bring to the narthex by Dec. 13.

You may see a new face around St. Joseph’s. The new person you may see is Vince Slisz, our new parish maintenance man. Vince brings with him a variety of gifts/talents, experience, and a hard work ethic, which will serve our parish very well, and make St. Joseph’s ever stronger and better. Welcome to St. Joseph’s Vince, and if you meet him, please say hello.

This Tuesday, December 8, is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Patroness of the United States, and it is a holy day of obligation. Please see the bulletin for the mass times. May our Blessed Mother, the Immaculate Conception, help us with her maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us.

Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

GO ST. JOSEPH KNIGHTS!

ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL COUNCIL “ESSENTIALS” DRIVE

In the spirit of teaching our children to give to those who are less fortunate than they, we are hosting an “Essentials” drive for adults with disabilities. We are asking each of our school children to bring in a toiletry item for ei-ther men or women. These can include items such as deodor-ant, mouthwash, toothbrush and toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo, brushes and combs. Items need to be new and still in packaging or with tags.

These items will be assembled into Christmas Stockings by our Student Council and will be delivered to St. Coletta’s of Illinois which provides support in the areas of: residential programs, educational programs, medical care and vocational services to children and adults with developmen-tal disabilities (www.stcolettail.org). We are working with the Residential Services Program which is designed to pro-vide quality housing and independent living services to peo-ple with disabilities to promote maximum community inte-gration. The focus of the program is on participating in com-munity activities, patronizing local businesses, and learning to understand the value of being part of the community.

The adult residents at St. Coletta’s are many times wards of the state and many do not have family to help with their basic needs like food, most of the rest of their needs are met through donations. For many, their only chance at re-ceiving any gifts for Christmas is through the generosity of people who recognize the need and are willing to donate a gift.

Although the residents of St. Coletta’s are adults, there are a number of them who the developmental age of a child. Please return your items no later than Monday, Dec. 14, to St. Joseph School so that we can get them delivered in time for Christmas.

Somos desafiantes y resistentes a Dios. ¡No hay nada de malo en mí! ¡Yo no estoy torcida!

Obecnie można to dzieło oglądać w Rzymie.

Zostawcie ją w narteksie najpóźniej do 13 grudnia. Zapewne zauważycie na terenie parafii nową twarz. To Vince Slisz, nasz nowy konserwator. Vince jest nadzwyczaj utalentowanym i pracowitym facetem. Te jego cechy z pewnością wzmocnią i ubogacą naszą Parafię. Witamy u św. Józefa, Vince! Jeśli zobaczycie go gdzieś w pobliżu, zgotujcie mu serdeczne powitanie. Pojutrze (we wtorek, 8 grudnia) przypada Święto Niepokalanego Poczęcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny, Patronki Stanów Zjednoczonych. Dla tutejszych katolików jest to dzień obowiązkowy. W biuletynie znajdziecie rozkład Mszy Świętych na ten dzień. Najświętsza Maryjo Niepokalanego Poczęcia, miej nas zawsze w Swej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami.

Vivat Jesus! Chwała Jezusowi!
