Crip members refer to each other as “Cuzz” and will crossout the B’s in their correspondence as a direct sign of disre-spect to their mortal enemy the Bloods. The number six (6)holds significance to members of the Folk Nation (see lastweeks issue) which is why the Crips will utilize a six pointstar in graffiti.

“GRAPE”One of the Crip“sets” is known as“Grape” and willuse the word orphotos of grapesand purple orshades of blue toidentify their set.

HistoryThe Crips like most street gangs, originated in Los Angelesback in 1969 from a youth gang originally known as BabyAvenues. That gang evolved into the Avenue Cribs due tomembers of this gang who resided on Central Avenue in LosAngeles. At that time Central Avenue was referred to as the“Avenue”. During the 1970’s the Avenue Cribs became known as“Crips” as the term started to gain popularity and becamean acceptable name change for the gang. At that time, thefounding member of the gang was identified as Raymond

Washington along with another initial member identified bylaw enforcement as Stanley “Tookie” Williams began tospread their influence to other local youth gangs which re-sulted in the formation of the first “sets” of the Crips. Some of these sets were identified as Avalon Garden Crips,Inglewood Crips, Westside Crips and Eastside Crips. Theofficial color of the Crips is blue, and memberships at thattime was strictly African-American. The Bloods were born out of protection from the Crips. Backin the 1970’s in Los Angeles a few independent gangs hadrivalries with the Crips, these gangs formed a collectivemembership for protection. Since then a fierce and bloodybattled has existed between the two.During the 1980’s, the Crips expanded throughout theUnited States as they had become heavily involved in thedrug trade to promote their illicit activities, which includeddrive by shootings, extortion, firearms trafficking, robbery, and murder. Through the sale of narcotics, the Crips be-came a “Super Gang” and quickly expanded.Belize, formerly the British Honduras, was a site that theCrips had great influence. That is one of the Central Amer-ican countries that the gang would get its illegal drugs from.It was during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s that the Cripshad migrated to the east coast of the United States. The firstknown set in our area was the Harlem Crips.

A white shirt is preferred attire for the street.East Coast Crips align with the Folk Nation gangs and utilizeFolk Nation symbols in their graffiti and correspondence.Their enemies are the Bloods, Latin Kings and Neta gangmembers. In addition to the color blue, Crips are also represented byblue and gray, blue and black and various shades of purple. If Crips are going to war, they wear or use orange colors.

SetsAs previously noted the Crips gang has numerous factionsreferred to by its members as “sets”. These sets operate in-dependent of one another making identification of particularsets difficult to distinguish. Set members will frequently addgraffiti type writing to identify their particular set in their cor-respondence. The following sets have been identified by theNJ Department of Corrections as operating within our state.103rd Grape Street Crips – 74 Grape St. Crips – Neighbor-hood Rich Rollin 100’s – 5 Deuce Hoover Street Crips –Outlaw Immortal Crips – 103rd Hoover Crips – Atlanta DriveBy Crips – Harlem World Crips – Deuce 45 East End Crips– Eight Trey Main Street Mafia Crips – Rollin 20’s – EastCoast Crips – Gangsta Playboys – Hustler Crips – NorthsideKilla Crips – International Gangster Crips – Sky Is The LimitCrips – EK 187 Crips – Hoover Crips – New World Outlaws– White Castle Crips – Insane Killer Crips. Note; Hoover Crips do not always recognize their affiliationwith the Crips but rather believe that any of the Hoover setsare their own gang.

Organizational StructureAs the Crips are splintered intosets, it tends to lend an overalllack of established hierarchyand organizational structure. Itis believed that with the contin-ued proliferation of this gang, amore formalized rank structurewill evolve as it has in theBloods. Currently, some of theidentified sets address theirleader as “OG” Original Gang-ster. Another set may call its boss a “5 Star General” whileothers use “OH” Original Hoodster. There are three (3) factions of Crip sets; Hoodsters (Neigh-borhood), Gangsters (Grape Street) and Criminals (Hoover)and they do not all get along with one another.

Aryan Brotherhood

The Aryan Brotherhood gang has been around in numerousprison systems for almost 30 years. The gang is not organ-ized nationally and operate independently within the partic-ular prison system in which it exists. Although themembership numbers are much smaller than more globalgangs, the level of violence attributed to this gang is veryhigh.Of course, membership is limited strictly to Caucasians whoespouse a view of racial separation. Identification of AryanBrotherhood members can be confusing to an untrained in-dividual as members portray and possess the same racialcharacteristics as many other white supremacist move-ments.

HistoryThe first evidence of Aryan Brotherhood (AB) can be tracedto San Quentin Prison in 1967. Like most gangs, this onewas established for protection of white inmates from attacksby Black and Hispanic gang members. In New Jersey, the first sign of the Aryan Brotherhood wasin September 1993 at the East Jersey State Prison. Thoseinmates were transferred to New Jersey as a precautionarymeasure due to increased tensions between this gang andthe Prison Brotherhood of Bikers and other unnamed blackgroups. In 1993, the Aryan Brotherhood attempted to establish itselfby recruiting members of the Prison Brotherhood of Bikers(PBB), a gang that had 20 years of history in jail. PBB mem-bers do not openly display their racist views, except their

tattoos or patches have a swastika. The principal activity ofthe PBB is distribution of CDS within the prison system. Be-cause they sell drugs to all races within the prison, it is badfor business to openly show racist views; money first. The hostilities between these two gangs is high. AryanBrotherhood did absorb another prison biker gang; BlueBlood Vikings are now members of the Aryan Brotherhood. The East Coast Aryan Brotherhood (ECAB) was establishedin 1994, and became a “set” of the Aryan Brotherhood. In2005, the State Prison Skinheads officially aligned them-selves as a “set” within the East Coast Aryan Brotherhood.

The Five Percent NationAKA

The Nation of Gods & Earth

The Five Percent Nation, also known as the Nation of Godsand Earths and various other names, is considered by manymembers of the law enforcement community in New Jerseyand elsewhere, to be a top threat.Although this gang origi-nated in New York City inthe 1960’s, it is widely rec-ognized that in New Jersey, specifically MonmouthCounty, is the “home” of theFive Percent Nation. Evi-dence of criminal activityrelating to members of thisgang can also be found inConnecticut, Delaware,Georgia, Maryland, Massa-chusetts, New York, NorthCarolina, Pennsylvania,South Carolina, Virginiaand Washington D.C.The origin of the Five Percent Nation can be traced to a re-ligious group which is known as the Nation of Islam (NOI).Although the NOI is a nationally recognized religion, someof the Five Percent Nation will claim that the gang is a reli-gious group. The claim of being a religion is merely a cloakused by Five Percenter’s to conceal their criminal acts. Five Percent Nation use the universal 7 flag, 8 point star“Allah” and the crescent moon below the “7”. Some tattoosor markings will also highlight three (3) burn marks that sym-bolizes dog paws. This is used when an individual has“flipped: his association from 5%er to Blood.

The number 7 symbolizes the seventh letter of the alphabet;“G”, which stands for God. The members of the Five PercentNation believe they are Gods.

HistoryIn 1963, Clarence EdwardSmith Jowers, who wasknown as Clarence 13XSmith and a member of theNation of Islam, was expelledfrom NOI Temple #7 inHarlem, New York by MinisterMalcolm X Shabazz. The rea-sons for the expulsion werecited as “ideological differ-ences” in that Smith, asidefrom his love of gambling, de-clared himself to be “God” or“Allah”. Not only did Smithbelieve that he was God, buthe also declared that theblack man who is the “original man”, is God. This belief con-trasts with the NOI tenet, that God’s presence in NorthAmerica was manifest in the person of his messenger, Wal-lace Fard, who was known as Wallace Fard Muhammad orMaster Fard Muhammad and is recognized as the founderof the Nation of Islam. After Smith was expelled from the NOI, he gained his ownfollowing in Harlem which was comprised mostly of youngmen from poor, single parent families, who were easily in-fluenced by the charismatic Smith, who became known as“Father” or “Allah”. He became famous for teaching the world’s population asbeing comprised of the 85% or those who follow a “mysteryGod” and worship “that which does not exist”. This 85% arethose who have been subjugated by the “Ten Percent” whoare known as the “Blue Eyed Devils” or “White Devils” whokeep the 85% ignorant by teaching them to believe in a mys-tery God. The addition of the 85% to the 10%, equals 95%,thus, leaving Five Percent or the poor righteous teacherswhose role is to teach the 85% and to struggle against the10%.

It is widely thought that Smith bastardized the teaching ofthe Nation of Islam which prohibited gambling, adultery, al-cohol and the use of narcotics, in order to suit his ownlifestyle. He developed 120 “Lessons” or “Degrees” whichare memorized by many ardent members of the Five Per-cent Nation. These lessons are contained in the “Book ofLife” and are:1. Supreme Mathematics2. Supreme Alphabets3. Student Enrollment Lessons 1-104. Lost Found Muslim Lesson #15. English C Lessons 1-366. Lost Found Muslim Lesson #27. Actual Facts8. Solar FactsInsight into the basic Tenants of the Five Percent Nation iscontained in the Student Enrollment Lessons wherein onecan easily grasp the racist nature of the Smith teachings.Who is the original man?Answer: The original man is the Asiatic Blackman, themaker, the owner, the cream of the planet earth, father ofcivilization and God of the Universe. Who is the Colored man?Answer: The colored man is the Caucasian (white man) orYacob’s grafted devil, the white man on the planet earth.

Also contained in the Lost Found Muslim Lessons, #2.Tell us how the devil ismade?Answer: The devil is madefrom the original people bygrafting and separating thegerms. In the blackmans bodythere exists tow germs, a blackgerm and a brown germ.Yacob with his law on birthcontrol separated the browngerm from the black germ andgrafted into white by destroy-ing the black germ. After fol-lowing this process for 600years the germ because whiteand was no more original, alsoby thinning the original bloodthe germ became weak and wicked and was no more thesame. Thus this is how Yacob made the devil.Smith’s activities did not go unnoticed in New York City. Hisgang was noted by the NYPD Bureau of Special Services, whose responsibility was to monitor social activists and rad-icals, as civil unrest was a prime concern during the mid tolate 1960’s. Due to his radical beliefs and large following,Smith was put on the city payroll by Mayor Lindsay, in aneffort to keep the peace. Smith used that opportunity to re-ceive funding for a “Street Academy” which still exists to thisday and is called Allah School in Mecca. By the late 1960’s,membership in the Five Percent Nation numbered in thethousands.

June 1969, Smith was murdered while playing dice. Whilehis killers were never identified, two popular theories existas to the reason he was killed. One was that the Nation ofIslam had him assassinated because he had stolen the“Lessons” from the temple and used them for his own aimsand the other, which is favored by the membership of the

Five Percent Nation, is that the murder was planned by theNYPD. They think the Bureau of Special Services in an ef-fort to drive a wedge between the NOI and the Five PercentNation killed Smith. Following his death, Smith became acult-like hero and his followers flourished.During the 1970’s the Five Percent Nation was so popularand violent in the NY State prison system, that a new gangwas started just to protect inmates from the Five Percentmembers. That new gang was the Latin Kings. In the early 1980’s, the Five Percent Nation made its pres-ence known in Monmouth County. To date, the gang is inevery county in New Jersey, but the level of criminal activityin Monmouth County far exceeds that of any other gangsin the state. They recruit poor inner-city black youth into alife of drug dealing and other related crimes. The Five Percent Nation does not have a hierarchical or-ganization with a central leadership. They are a loose fed-eration of autonomous groups sharing common beliefs. Theleaders are usually called “teachers”, “enlighteners”, or “el-ders”. Five Percenters believe that they are “A-Like” orequal and therefore, leadership is collective.

The Association Neta

HistoryThe Association Neta was formed in Rio Piedras Prison,Puerto Rico in 1979 by an inmate named Carlos Torres Iri-arte; AKA “Carlos La Sombra” or “The Shadow”. He startedthis gang for the protection of inmate rights, but it quicklyevolved into a highly organized criminal organization withinthe Puerto Rican prison system. In fact, the gang attemptsto disguise its criminality by calling itself the “AssociationFor The Rights Of The Inmates”. During the early 1980’s Iriarte was murdered by a rival gangduring a prison riot. He quickly became a cult hero to theNeta members. Today, the Neta gang has so much influ-ence in the Puerto Rican prison system that they controlcellblock assignments, access to educational and voca-tional programs, job assignments and the degree of inmatesupervision. They also controlled incoming mail, allowingcontraband and drugs into facilities virtually unchecked.Every time the prison officials attempt to disrupt the Netastrong hold, the gang organizes work stoppages, assaultson guards, riots and hostage taking. Neta chapters were first observed within the NJ Departmentof Corrections at Bayside State Prison in June of 1994 andat the Mountainview Youth Correctional Facility in July ofthe same year. For two years the gangs here in New Jerseywere operating without sanction from Puerto Rico thatchanged in 1996.
