to save their lives, they have to destroy their livelihoods. Yet, the people prescribing this drastic therapy continue to get a regular paycheck.

Several of the decrees descending from Mt. Sacramen-to are irrational. Among the more absurd is that singing is forbidden at gatherings, even in church. Can’t sing? When

I was growing up I sang along with the rest of a singing nation. At the movies, all of a sudden the lights came up and the words to a song appeared on the screen with the notation “follow the bouncing ball.” A ball landed on ev-ery note to teach the audience how the song went. Many of the songs were patriotic tunes, such as “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again,” and “Over There.” And guess what? We sat there and sang because group singing was an American tradition going back to the 19th century. We sang around pianos, and around campfires. We sang in dormitories, on car trips, bus trips, at church socials and impromptu gatherings of friends and neighbors.

My mother taught me all the old songs while we sat on our front porch on balmy summer evenings. “Carolina in the Morning” and “Shine on Harvest Moon (for me and my gal),” were part of our songbook, as was:

You can open your mouth to sing, just don’t let any sound come outTHE AUTHOR, Joseph Heller, manifestly captured

the absurdity of daily military life in his novel, “Catch-22.” I received a taste of that absurdity when as a 17-year old I joined the Army Reserves. I attended meetings in the base-ment of a drab building in downtown Buffalo, N.Y. The meetings began with a brief lecture. Following the lecture we would adjourn to another room to play poker. In the summer we spent two weeks at Camp Drum near Lake Ontario. I was designated company clerk because I could type, thus I was in the command post one day when, after reviewing our unit, a regular army colonel asked our com-mander how long it would take to reach combat readiness.

“Three weeks, sir,” the commander told him. “I think more like three years,” the colonel said.

‘A singing nation’The protagonist of Heller’s novel, John Yossarian, has

one goal, “to stay alive even if he dies trying.” He tells the company psychiatrist he is crazy, hoping to be grounded so he won’t have to fly any more highly dangerous bombing missions. But he’s told making such a claim proves that he’s fit to keep flying.

“Let me see if I’ve got this straight,” Yossarian says. “In order to be grounded, I’ve got to be crazy. And I must be crazy to keep flying. But if I ask to be grounded, that means I’m not crazy anymore, and I have to keep flying.”

That’s Catch-22.The same principle plays a role in the current pandemic.

Our vaunted leaders have told many people that, in order

“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray.

You’ll never know dear, how much I love you, Please don’t take my sunshine away.”

All together nowIn the early 1960s, NBC launched the first “Sing Along

with Mitch,” television show. Mitch Miller was a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and a classically trained oboist. Author William Zinnser writes in his book, “The Writer Who Stayed,” “Miller became a record producer for Mercury Records and Columbia Records. He was a genius at packaging singers in catchy arrangements that would propel any of them to fame.” Among them were Rose-mary Clooney, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, Patti Page, and Frankie Layne. “He thereby shaped America’s taste in popular song after World War II, before rock blew all the old conventions away,” Zinnser writes.

“Sing Along with Mitch” was a hit for more than three years. Miller used songs that were in a range that people could handle. They were easy to remember because they were built on the first phrase, as in, “There are smiles that make you happy, there are smiles that make you blue,”

We knew the songs because we grew up with them. The melodies were inside of us. Miller ran the lyrics as cap-tions across the bottom of the screen. And we sang. In our living rooms, in saloons, American Legion Halls, and any-

where folks gathered around a TV set. We sang everything from “Avalon,” to “Tzena, Tzena, Tzena.”

One of the songs, “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” had its own choreography. Zinnser describes it this way: “As the song begins, everyone puts his arm around the person sitting on either side and starts to sway with the music. Sure enough, when the first notes were struck, as if turned by a switch, arms were deployed throughout the auditori-um and the audience rocked gently to the lilt of the waltz.”

We are living in the movie “Catch-2020.” Bureaucrats hit a switch and turned off our lives, while they enjoy life without the same restrictions they force upon us.

“And as the flames climbed high into the night/To light the sacrificial rite/I saw Satan laughing with delight/The day the music died.” — ‘American Pie,’ by Don McLeanContact Jerry at [email protected].
