Towed vessel breaks free, washes ashore
ALISTAIR TAYLORCAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Rocking back and forth with the oncoming swells off northern Strait of Georgia, a swamped fish-ing boat attracted a steady stream of onlookers at the mouth of Wil-low Creek Wednesday.
The boat was apparently being towed from Campbell River to Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island Tuesday eveing when the tow had to be abandoned. The Coast Guard vessel Cape Palmerston attended the scene at 6 p.m anticipating a search and rescue operation, said Phillip Hawkins, Officer in Charge at the Campbell River Coast Guard station.

“We established that it was not a search and rescue,” Hawkins said. “There was nobody on board.”
Through some inves-tigative work, Hawkins found out that the boat was “an older live-aboard derelict.”
“It was being towed from the Campbell River small craft har-bour around to Squir-rel Cove,” Hawkins said. “The tow had to be abandoned.”
Weather conditions Tuesday evening were heavy rain and strong winds.
The case was turned over to the Coast Guard’s environmen-tal response group to determine if any fur-ther action was neces-sary.
Early indications are that the boat poses no threat to Willow Creek an important salmon stream.
Terry Davis, Coast Guard regional direc-tor of communications, said that the environ-mental response group has been notified and are looking into the situation.
“From what I under-stand, there doesn’t appear to be any con-cerns with fuel leaks,” Davis said.

Habitat for Humanity is in desperate need of volunteers to help take down houses.
The deconstruction of old homes is a vital source of the non-prof-it’s revenue but the non-profit organiza-tion is currently in a tough spot.
“Right now we’re in a position where we’re bidding on contracts but we have to have the people to fulfil the contract,” said Mau-reen Miller of people and communications for Habitat for Human-ity Vancouver Island North. “We don’t have enough people on the de-construction crews.”
Miller said in Courte-nay there was a group who would get together and take down houses on a regular basis for Habitat. Miller said she would like to get some-thing similar going in Campbell River.
“We’d like to get a group of dependable people that can help us out on a regular basis,” she said.
Al Rylance, the Camp-
bell River reclamation manager for Habitat, said the organization is negotiating with the city to deconstruct a city-owned house.
“The city owns a house that’s to be demolished and we’re asking to be in line to deconstruct it,” Rylance said.
The only problem is Habitat doesn’t know ahead of time how many people will be available to do the work.
“We don’t want to say ‘yes’ and then not have the volunteers to do it,” Miller said. “To say ‘yeah we’ll do it’
and then not have the volunteers puts us in a bad situation.”
Rylance is looking for people to put in any amount of time they have to give to help take down houses to their foundations. All the materials salvaged from the homes such as lightbulbs, light switches, windows, doors, door hinges, pretty much anything from the home other than the plaster will be taken out by Habitat and then sold at either the Campbell River or Courtenay ReStore. All the money made off inventory at the
ReStore goes back into the Vancouver Island North Habitat branch account to build houses

Campbell River has one such home on MapleRoad – a duplex that benefits two different fami-lies.
The homes are aimed at young families andfor people who can afford to pay an interest freemortgage.
“Our mandate for Vancouver Island North isto help young families with a stable income whoprobably wouldn’t otherwise qualify for a mort-gage,” Miller said. “We don’t get a lot of peopleapplying for housing. A lot of people don’t thinkthey’re worthy but there’s a lot of people whowould probably qualify and a lot of people whodon’t want to take a handout, but it’s not. You paymortgage payments and if you get a raise, yourpayments go up.”
Habitat for Humanity is planning a secondbuild in Campbell River for fall 2012 but it hingeson whether or not it can get the appropriate pieceof property from the city. Housing also dependson the money Habitat makes through its salvageoperations, which is where the volunteers comein.
“We can find something for everyone to do,”Miller said. “Al is good at coming up with some-thing for everyone regardless of capabilities. Wedon’t turn any volunteers away.
“Right now we’re negotiating contracts and wedesperately need volunteers because if we can’tdo (the contract) then there’s no money to do ahouse.”

If something doesn’t change soon, the Moun-tainaire Avian Rescue Society (MARS) will have to close its doors within a few months.
According to man-ager Maj Birch, the wildlife rehabilitation centre only has enough funding to operate for three more months. She founded the soci-ety 17 years ago and said that funding has always been uncertain but she doesn’t recall a time this perilous before.
“We always did live sort of hand to mouth,” Birch said. “I don’t think it’s been quite down that low. Over the years it’s been pretty scary at times, think-ing that we may shut down, so it’s always been a struggle.”
Birch said MARS receives many in-kind donations, like free veterinarian services and a vehicle BC Hydro bought, but it’s hard to keep the cash flow going.
MARS also receives funding from various grants but it’s always somewhat uncertain.
Part of the reason things have got so tough for MARS is an increased demand for services.
“Our caseload has been increasing each year and we’ve had some fairly successful programs,” said Birch. “Our internship pro-
gram, and more and more people are ask-ing us to appear at their events, so that required more of our time and it’s wonder-ful – I mean, we don’t want to turn anybody down.”
T he educational aspect of the society has grown, including more community pre-sentations and school programs. Also, the
local eagle population has increased, and so has the amount of injured birds the soci-ety works to rehabili-tate.
“ W h e n we f i r s t started we were get-ting maybe 25 eagles a year, now we’re over 50 eagles a year, which is a record for us this year,” explained Birch.
The injured eagles “require basically two people to handle every time we’re dealing with them, so when they come in and they’re very sick it requires feeding four times a day with two people.”
Carla Pederson is a bird lover, and when she found out how badly MARS needs help she wanted to do something.
“Fundraising is just so difficult this time of year, you know, so many worthy organi-zations counting on the public for dona-tions,” said Pederson. “We thought because people tend to social-
ize a lot more this time of year it would be an easier option to collect bottles.”
Refundable bever-age containers can be dropped off at Peder-son’s business, Bees and Blooms Nursery, at 2940 Lanyon Rd. (off Marsden Road), or she will pick them up. Call her at 250-338-0186, or e-mail her at [email protected] for more infor-mation.
MARS also takes fawns, beavers and other mammals, then transports them to other facilities.
While other facili-ties are available for wildlife rehabilitation, MARS is the only one in this area, and Birch said the North Island Wildlife Recovery Asso-ciation in Errington will feel the crunch if the society has to close its doors.
People can donate directly to MARS by visiting their website wingtips.ca or calling 250-337-2021

Drive Smart BCSpeed Contrary to an Area Sign
As a knowledgeable driver you are aware of the three blanket speed limits that cover the whole province of Brit-ish Columbia. These limits are 80 km/h outside a municipality, 50 km/h in a municipality and 20 km/h on a municipal lane. There is one more method of setting a smaller blanket speed zone and that is through the use of an area sign. Area signs may set a blanket speed limit of 60 km/h or less and provide for exceptions through the words “unless oth-erwise posted” shown on the sign. These smaller blanket zones are advertised in the British Columbia Gazette published by the Queen’s Printer. Unfortunately, on line access to the Gazette only comes at a price. If you are curious about the extend of an area zone, the easiest free access to the Gazette is at your local library. As with any speed sign, you are ex-pected to be traveling at the posted limit as you pass it. Should you encounter an exception by passing a sign with a higher limit, be prepared to slow back to the area limit if you turn onto another highway and don’t see a sign telling you that you may do otherwise or you know that you have left the boundaries of the blanket area. Violations of area speed zone limits carry the same penalty as all other speed-ing offences.

The local cystic fibro-sis chapter is offer-ing a chance to win a hockey road trip and support cystic fibrosis research.
W i n n i n g p r i z e includes: VIP tickets to three NHL games Thursday, March 15, 2012, Phoenix in Cal-gary, Friday, March 16, Calgary in Edmonton, Saturday, March 17 Columbus in Vancou-ver; airfare for two to all three games; hotel accommodation; and $500 spending money.
Tickets are avail-able at: Action Source for Sports, Intersport, Steve Marshall Ford, Balloons ‘N More Party Shop in Willow Point or by calling 250 923 4992.
All proceeds are in support of the fight against cystic fibrosis, a disease known only too well to two young brothers who have recently moved to the Campbell River area, 9 year old River and 7-year-old Quinn Gray.
Their mother Tracey Gray said, “the boys are just like any other children – they like to have fun, play and do sports.”
While the brothers like to joke around and have fun, the whole family takes cystic fibrosis very seriously.
“It is crucial that
River and Quinn do physiotherapy twice daily to help keep their lungs clear and take all their medication or they will quite sim-ply not survive,” said Tracey. A good part of their day is devoted to dealing with the effects of cystic fibro-sis. River also has to deal with extra dietary modifications due to celiac disease.
Cystic Fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affect-ing Canadian children and young adults.
There is no cure. Funds raised from the Hockey
Road Trip raffle will support CF research.

A proposal for a new car wash facility is going to a public hear-ing.
Paul Thomsen is ask-ing the city to re-zone his property at 1153 and 1185 Ironwood Road to allow a car wash with residential living units up above.
The property is cur-rently zoned commer-cial one which allows for mixed use commer-cial/residential build-ings but a car wash is not permitted under that zoning.
Thomsen is planning to build a new, two-storey building on the property which cur-rently houses an auto repair shop.
Above the car wash would be two residen-tial units, with park-ing provided on the property.
City staff told council it supports the project, as it fits with the char-acter of the neighbour-hood.
“Ironwood Street has historically been a service commercial area with a number of uses that are not well suited to the existing central commercial zoning,” said Ian Buck, the city’s planner, in a report to council. “These uses are well established and likely to remain for the long term.”
Buck said the pro-posed car wash would have seven bays – two automatic, four regular self serve and one over-sized self serve – and the second floor would have two residential suites and office space with the residential units intended for employees.
“The proposal will therefore bring full-
time residents to the area,” Buck said. “The location is on the periphery of the down-town core where medi-cal, retail and enter-tainment opportuni-ties are within walking distance. Given this and the added benefit of onsite security by having full-time resi-dents it is considered that the car wash facil-ity is compatible with the residential use.”
Buck said the car wash will also present an opportunity to revi-talize an older prop-erty and add character to the area.
The proposed devel-opment also falls in line with the Official C o m m u n i t y P l a n which aims to promote the downtown core area as the primary commercial area for the city.
Thomsen said the feedback from a neigh-
bourhood public meet-ing has been all posi-tive and he has received letters of support from four different owners/occupants of nearby properties.
Thomsen already owns and operates Suds City Car Wash in Comox.
“This general busi-ness and financial expertise and our specific car wash experience and suc-cess greatly enhances our ability to develop and run a successful car wash business in Campbell River that will be a benefit to the community and an asset to the business offerings of Camp-bell River’s downtown core,” said Thomsen in a letter to council.
He said the Campbell River car wash will be a “high-end” wash facility similar to Suds City in Comox.

COMMUNITY UPDATE DECEMBER 30, 2011
NOTICE OF REVITALIZATION TAX EXEMPTIONPursuant to sec on 227 of the Community Charter, Council for the City of Campbell River gives no ce that Council proposes to adopt Downtown Revitaliza on Tax Exemp on Amendment Bylaw No 3472, 2012.
The reasons for and objec ves of the bylaw are to promote the revitaliza on of the area of downtown shown on the plan below (the “Special Commercial Area”) through the development and redevelopment of commercial buildings.
The bylaw is intended to accomplish these objec ves by providing developers or redevelopers of commercial buildings within the Special Commercial Area with an enhanced tax exemp on that would not otherwise be applicable to development or redevelopment of commercial buildings in City Centre Downtown (as de ned in Downtown Revitaliza on Tax Exemp on Bylaw No. 3392, 2009).
The amount of the tax exemp on that would be provided in respect of the development of new commercial buildings within the Special Commercial Area is 100% of the municipal property tax imposed on the improvement.
The amount of the tax exemp on that would be provided in respect of the redevelopment of commercial buildings within the Special Commercial Area is 100% of that por on of municipal property tax imposed on the improvement which increases as a result of the Bri sh Columbia Assessment Authority increasing the assessed value of the improvement more than the average increase in assessment within City Centre Downtown (as de ned above) for that class of improvements.
The maximum term of a tax exemp on that would be provided in respect of the development or redevelopment of commercial buildings within the Special Commercial Area is 5 years.

The courts have tem-porarily restored the power of B.C. police officers to issue imme-diate 90-day suspen-sions to impaired drivers caught with a blood-alcohol level over 0.08.
B.C. Supreme Court Justice Jon Sigurdson, who previously struck down that part of the roadside penalty sys-tem, issued a follow-up ruling just before Christmas that sus-pends the implemen-tation of his decision until June 30.
That effectively gives the provincial govern-ment six months to pass new legislation to ensure the roadside penalties and process to appeal them comply
with the law.Justice Sigurdson
noted the government considers the auto-matic roadside penal-ties more effective than criminal prosecutions in fighting impaired driving.
“I have concluded that an immediate dec-laration of invalidity of part of the [adminis-trative penalty] regime may pose a danger to the public,” he wrote.
Sigurdson’s original Nov. 30 ruling fanned fears that police pow-ers to battle impaired drivers would be seri-ously eroded just as the holiday CounterAttack campaign was getting underway.
For three weeks since the Nov. 30 judgment, police had been unable to issue the 90-day sus-pensions and related
penalties and fees that add up to $3,750 for drivers who blow in the “fail” range over 0.08.
Instead, of f icers at roadblocks faced a choice: arrest the driver and adminis-ter a breath test at the police station, or else issue only a 24-hour suspension.
A roadblock that caught two impaired drivers would lose its investigating officers to the criminal proce-dure and might have to halt enforcement early that night as a result.
For roadside read-ings of 0.08 per cent or higher, police had pre-viously been imposing a 90-day driving ban, a $500 fine and impound-ing the vehicle for 30 days.
That suspension can
cost a driver $3,750, including $700 for tow-ing and storage and $1,420 to take a man-datory “responsible driver” course.
To comply with the court rulings, the prov-ince must ensure those drivers get a chance to challenge the deci-sion.
“We will work to introduce changes to the Motor Vehicle Act as soon as possible in the spring legislative session,” Solicitor Gen-eral Shirley Bond said in a statement.
Justice Sigurdson also found 90-day sus-pensions are consti-tutional for drivers who refuse to provide a breath sample upon request.
He upheld the use of the immediate road-side prohibitions for
drivers who blow in the “warn” range between 0.05 and 0.08.
Bond noted the road-side penalties resulted in a 40 per cent drop in alcohol-related deaths in the first year.
“Forty-five more peo-ple are alive to enjoy the holidays this year because police stopped
impaired drivers, people who would not be with their families today without this leg-islation.
Sigurdson has yet to rule on whether B.C. drivers who were punished without suf-ficient right to appeal are entitled to compen-sation.

The B.C. government boasts Canada’s lowest income tax rates on earnings up to $113,000 a year, but other deduc-tions from take-home pay are going up again in the new year.
The latest in a series of Medical Ser-vices Plan premium increases takes effect Jan. 1. The Canadian Taxpayers Federa-tion calculates that
the increase means a family with children will see their monthly MSP bill rise from $121 to $128, or $84 a year extra. MSP premiums have gone up 18.5 per cent since 2009.
“Very few politi-cians and public sec-tor employees pay the MSP tax, so they don’t understand the big deal,” said Jordan Bateman, the federa-tion’s B.C. director. “But entrepreneurs, small business owners,
middle class families and even those private sector employees lucky enough to have an employer pick up their MSP tab, know what a bite this is out of their pockets.”
The federation also notes that federal Employment Insurance and Canada Pension Plan premiums are set to rise by $306 for the average employee in 2012. Half of that is paid by the employee.
Other everyday costs
are also going up for B.C. residents.
BC Hydro rates were pared back in a spend-ing review ordered by Energy Minister Rich Coleman. An interim eight per cent increase took effect in the spring of 2011, but BC Hydro has committed to rate increases of 3.9 per cent in 2012 and 2013.
The coming year will also see the last legis-lated increase in B.C.’s carbon tax on fossil fuels.

Roots and wingsThrowing out old yard waste is a sure re way to spread alien plants in our local forests. The thing about alien plants is that they can take over an area, crowding out the native plants. This may result in also crowding out native insects, birds, mammals and creating an area that is unnatural in every way. Happy New Year to all of our readers and advertisers. The upcoming year promises to be one of significant change in Campbell River.
We’ve had a couple of years now to adjust to the loss of the Elk Falls pulp mill, parts of which are being dismantled and sold off, leaving behind a large industrial property owned by Catalyst. It’s proving to be a potential asset for the community but one which is controlled by the
company. Perhaps this year we will see it converted to an enterprise that will benefit the local economy.
It will be a contentious project as has already been seen with the rumoured and vehemently denied waste incineration concept. Let’s hope the eventual use of the property is both economic beneficial and reflective of modern sensibilities that are obviously important to the community.
Campbell River gets an opportunity in 2012 to remake itself in many ways. The Elk Falls property can be the biggest catalyst for that remake (pardon the pun).
City Hall will be forced to make changes of some kind due to the loss of revenue from the Elk Falls mill. Homeowners will take on more of the revenue
burden and the degree to which we are willing to do that will determine how much of our services we retain. It may be a tight year for community programming.
It will be a year in which contentious proposals and controversial actions by and for local government will dominate the news agenda. Public input on these issues will be required. Let’s just all remember to conduct ourselves with some dignity, consideration for alternative points of view and a level of civility that isn’t always there these days.
Be passionate about your community, yes, but be also considerate and tolerant. Happy New Year.
2012 will be a year of transitionOur ViewOur View
Another year over, a new one’s just begun
We say: Let’s see if we can conduct ourselves with some dignity
Good point: GenderI am writing in regards to the gender specific toy
options offered at a Campbell River fast food restaurant representing a well-known, multinational corporation. Myself and other concerned parents have written to said restaurant’s corporate headquarters with our concerns regarding the promotion of outdated gender stereotypes, only to recieve letters explaining that the restaurant wants all children to enjoy all of the toys they offer equally, and that employees are specifically trained not to refer to toy options as the “girl’s toy”, or “boy’s toy”. While I try not to frequent these res-taurants for obvious nutritional/ethical reasons, we occasionally end up there, and if I ask for a toy, I am still always asked “Boy’s toy or girl’s toy?”.
In fact, both the computer screen, as well as the receipt also refer to the toy item in gender-specific terms. I shouldn’t need to point out why this is a nega-tive message to be sending our children, however, considering most employees willingness to phrase the question that way, it appears it needs to be spelled out.
Toys are toys. Play is about free expression, explora-tion and stretching one’s imagination. Limits to what one can play with based on sexist/homophobic stereo-types limit the child’s ability to stretch there imagina-tion, and thereby stifle self-expression and self-actual-isation. In a modern educational setting, such labels
And so, this is New Year’s (to para-phrase John Lennon) and what have we done? Another year over, a new one’s just begun.
I hope you, your family and friends all had a Merry Christmas. Or a Happy Holiday, if that’s how you want to say it.
The Christmas season once again passes with an orgy of consumption, spending, travelling, imbibing, exult-ing, for many – singing, playing and otherwise enjoying yourselves. It’s also a period of community largesse as we donate to many local charitable causes. The “grip and grin” photo dominated the local papers as local businesses and organizations donate to the various local causes.
But that’s over with for now as we look ahead to 2012. An ominous year,
of course, if you believe in the Mayan prophesies. Having survived Y2K and previous predictions of oblivion, for-give me if I continue to make plans for 2013 and beyond.
For me personally, this year will be one of getting in shape, beginning that writing project and being more dedicated to practising my music. I will. Definitely this time. For sure.
Career-wise, I expect I’ll still be sitting in this chair continuing to pump out the news on these pages. The new part of my job, of course, is the increasing importance “social media” will play in my duties. I do expect that there will eventually be a generational change that will diminish the role newsprint plays as a medium for information. It isn’t going to happen any time soon but
given how popular the Internet and social media sites like Twitter and Facebook play in the lives of younger people (and increasingly, us older people too), it will happen.
I don’t have a major problem with that. I like the Internet as a medium. It’s immediate, multi-format and interactive. I can write stories, take pictures and produce videos all with the intent of informing the commu-nity about what’s going on.
But newspapers will still be around for a while. People still want that package of news and advertising dropped onto their doorstep. And there’s nobody else who does it as extensively or puts as many resources into it as your community paper.
And what will we be writing about in the coming year? If you said hos-
pitals, you’d be right. The non-story that dominated the municipal elec-tion campaign will get hotter in 2012. So will plans for the Elk Falls pulp mill site. It’s going to be interesting to see how that plays out. Will it be a lucrative and innovative enterprise that will transform Campbell River or will it wallow in bickering and use-lessness like the former five-acre site the city owns on the Campbell River waterfront? If that can’t be made use of, how could a huge industrial site, you may ask? Because it’s owned by a private corporation who have to get something out of it, that’s how.
Meanwhile, the usual suspects of crime, courts, accidents, develop-ments, municipal spending and the like will make their way onto our pages – and websites.

are considered det-rimental and are not permitted. Further-more, the parroting of such phrasing makes the employees sound, frankly, stupid.
I have spoken to employees, as well as
read posts by employ-ees on internet forums, and they tell me that it is a complete lie that they are trained spe-cifically not to use the discriminatory labels. In fact, they say the opposite is true, and the computer screens and receipts (which
many children can read) confirms this. This is not about polit-ical correctness, it is about not shaming our children for wanting to play with the “wrong” toys and the current policies reflect the absolutely ridiculous superstition that play-
ing with certain toys as a child somehow has an effect on sexual orientation.
I understand it may take a few extra sec-onds to say “Would you like the Transformers or My Little Pony?” and that efficiency trans-lates into increased
profits, but are profits really more important than our children’s well-being and if this corporation is willing to blatantly lie about this one issue, what else are they decieving the public about?

BC Premier Christy C l a r k ’ s r e c e n t announcement that her government will create an auditor gen-eral for local govern-ment (AGLG) is a ray of good news for Brit-ish Columbians.
After all, local gov-ernments across the province spend nearly $10 billion of our hard-earned money annu-ally with little real scrutiny.
Although municipal finances are currently audited, the audits only determine if the finances are accurately reported – not whether taxpayers received
value for the money. As Canadians have
witnessed at the fed-eral and provincial levels, auditor gener-als across the country expose numerous gov-ernment failures every year – from cost over-runs and governments failing to achieve their stated objectives to governments simply spending our money unnecessarily.
There’s little doubt that a municipal audi-tor will expose simi-lar accounts of gov-ernment waste at the local level. While the increased exposure of government failure is important, the real question is what will be done about it?
According to the
Clark government, the AGLG’s role will be to conduct performance audits to determine if taxpayers are getting value for money. Put differently, the AGLG will investigate local government programs and initiatives to assess whether they’re deliv-ered efficiently and whether the desired results were achieved.
But the AGLG, like its federal and provin-cial counterparts, will be limited in that it will not “question the merits of policy deci-sions or objectives of a local government.” In other words, the AGLG will not com-ment on policy choices; only on the quality of their implementation.
The AGLG will also provide non-binding recommendations to the audited local gov-ernments through pub-licly released reports.
Without the ability to question the mer-its of policy decisions and the authority to force municipalities to respond to audits with measurable plans to overcome issues identified by the audi-tor general, British Columbians should be wary of the proposed AGLG’s effectiveness.
Of course, the audits and public reports will receive significant attention, especially in the media, putting increased pressure on politicians and bureau-crats to deliver better
value. But the experi-ence from other levels of government shows that increased expo-sure does not lead to significant corrective action.
For instance, at the federal level, the audi-tor general highlighted more than 300 cases of government waste between 1992 and 2006. These failures amounted to an esti-mated cost of up to $125 billion. Importantly, the failures occurred regardless of the party in power and many reoccurred despite pre-vious warnings by the auditor general.
To ensure British Columbians get better value for money, other reforms are needed.
A municipal auditor general isn’t a cure-all for local government waste

The local United Way campaign will receive a $1,770.95 boost thanks to the City of Campbell River’s commercial water meter replacement team.
City operations staff Chris Hansell, Mike Henderson, Gord Smith and Lorne Westfield are routinely assigned to replace aging commer-cial water meters, and this year’s change-outs accumulated approximately 1,000 pounds of old brass to be recycled.
Commercial water meters have a brass body with other small components attached. Metal recyclers will purchase the meters “as is” at a “dirty brass” going rate of $0.20 per pound. If the meters are stripped of their small compo-nents, they can be sold as “yellow brass” at a going rate of $1.65 per pound.
“The operations staff volunteered their time outside work hours to strip more than 100 changed-out water meters in order to increase the value of this scrap metal,” says the City’s water supervisor Jenny Brunn. “The initiative and effort by these employees will provide a very large benefit for those in need in our local community.”
“We are always amazed by the creative ways that individuals and workplaces use to help sup-port their local United Way,” says Brad Bayly, Community Development Coordinator for United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island. “The commercial water unit replace-ment team went the extra mile to raise some additional funds to their workplace campaign; the idea was brilliant and we are very thankful for their support.”
The City of Campbell River supports the United Way through an annual workplace fund-raising campaign. The scrap metal donation from the commercial water meter replacement team will supplement the City’s 2011 workplace campaign, which raised approximately $5860.
The City replaces failing and aging commer-cial water meters on a routine basis to ensure business customers are billed fairly for water use.

MIA HEITLANDCAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
A 25-year-old Camp-bell River resident is heading to Southeast Asia on a 10,000 km bicycle journey to promote sustainable living.
Riding a bamboo-frame bicycle which he built himself, Derek Howlett plans to travel from Hong Kong to Mumbai this spring.
By camping and couch surfing, Howlett said he hopes to spend no more than $15 a month on accommoda-tions.
In addition, he will continue eating the raw, vegan diet which he currently follows and promotes.
“The purpose of this trip is to raise as much awareness around healthy liv-ing and living sus-tainably,” Howlett explains on his web-site unrealliving.com.
“The plan for this trip is to maintain a 100 per cent raw vegan diet, eating as much local and organic fruits and vegetables as possible.”
Howlett, a London, Ontario native, is cur-rently riding around Campbell River with his bamboo bike and trailer, collecting donations of bottles and cans to fundraise for his trip.
“The bottle drive is my main source of funding,” Howlett said. “I’m picking up bottles on my bike so fundraising is also my training.”
Howlett is currently
biking 20-30 km a day, hauling a bamboo trailer to and from the local bottle depot.
So far, his bicycle, which he built at a weekend workshop in New York, is serving him well.
“I finished it in Lon-don and made a bunch of modifications to it in Campbell River,” he explained. To date, the unique bicycle has
cost Howlett $2,650 (including airfare to and the workshop in New York).
He will spend the next few months train-ing for his trip, as well as researching travel routes and destina-tions.
Howlett expects to face some challenges on his unique trip, not the least of which will be the numerous bor-
der crossings he faces on his route.
Through his web-site and social media including facebook and twitter, Howlett plans to keep follow-ers updated on his progress.
To date, he has raised about $500 towards his trip. Find out more at www.unrealliving.com/bike-tour-project.

Derek Howlett is currently fundraising, training and planning for a 10,000 kmride through South East Asia on his bamboo bicycle.
Willow Point Lions Club President Richard Chellew with helpers Jordyn (age 5) and Jaylyn (age 2) give a KidStart Gold Champion cheque for $1,200 to KidStart Coordinator Tara Jordan with son Rezner (age 1).
Thanks to the Willow Point Lions, a local child has been sup-ported to participate in KidStart for another year.
KidStart is Campbell River’s only one-to-one mentoring program and connects caring adults with chil-dren (ages 6-18) for three hours of fun per week.
KidStart relies on donations, grants, and Gaming revenue to provide support to the kids in Campbell River who need it most. The Willow Point Lions have com-mitted once again to a KidStart Champion Gold Sponsorship.
“We were a Gold Champion for KidStart last year and were think-ing about doing it again this year. We thought it was a good program and wanted to help out local kids in need,” said Bill Jeffrey, Willow Point Lions Club Treasurer.
“A volunteer mentor came to talk to us about mentoring, and hear-ing about how much of a differ-ence KidStart is making in a little boy’s life here sealed the deal for us.
“There’s a big need in this com-munity and we’re happy to support kids here.”
Club Secretary Steve Morey added that the Willow Point Lions’ main objective is to help children, so KidStart is a perfect fit.
JHSNI is inviting other groups and individuals to take part in its KidStart Champions fundraising campaign.
Becoming a KidStart Champion is simple – choose from three lev-els of monthly sponsorship (Gold = $100/month, Silver = $50, Bronze = $25). Gold covers the entire cost of a child’s participation in Kid-Start.
“We are very grateful to the Wil-low Point Lions for renewing their commitment to a KidStart Cham-pion Gold Sponsorship,” said JHSNI Executive Director Wendy Richardson. “Thanks to our donors and volunteer mentors, KidStart is making a big difference in the lives of local children.”
To find out more about becoming a KidStart Champion or Volunteer Mentor, contact KidStart Coordi-nator Tara Jordan at 250-286-0611 or e-mail [email protected].

“Well, it’s the holiday season which brings lots of food, family and joy this time of the year. It’s also the most expensive season for
most people as expenses go through the roof with needing winter tires and clothing for the family, holiday expenses, and hydro bills
skyrocketing. The good news is that we want to offer some relief this time of the year for those that are considering Refi nancing!”

NICKEL, Kenneth “Ken” ThomasNov. 10, 1926 - Dec. 22, 2011
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, dad, “papa” and friend.
Ken was born in Russell, Manitoba. As a young man, Ken started out driving truck, and went on to become a clerk in the local grocery store. When he met the
love of his life Stella, he decided that he should start a career, and thought that by moving to B.C. he could have that opportunity. In 1948 he moved to Ocean Falls and worked in construction at the mill and was offered an apprenticeship for his pipe-fi tting career. After working for just over a year, he returned to Manitoba to be married. In 1951 they moved to Prince Rupert, B.C. where they had their children. Ken was employed by Columbia Cellulose Mill. They enjoyed many good times while in Prince Rupert and then in 1965 decided it was time to move the family to Campbell River where he was employed by the Elk Falls Mill. He continued working there until he retired in 1989.
Ken loved life. He fulfi lled many accomplishments with many organizations including the I.O.F. and the Boy Scouts. He was always willing to lend a hand to a friend when needed. He was a “jack of all trades” and could fi x pretty much anything. He was an avid fi sherman and hunter, but most of all just loved a gathering with family and friends and playing a game of crib and always loved a good joke.
He will be profoundly missed by his wife of 60 years Stella, children, Randy (Debbie) of Andrew, AB, Grant (Carrie), Lonnie (Robin), grandchildren, Ashley (Neil), Adina (Kevin) of Victoria, B.C. Sadly Ken just missed meeting his fi rst great grandaughter Khloe Chapman who arrived December 24th. He also leaves numerous nieces, nephews from Manitoba, his honorary family of Rus, Lynn, Jennifer, Isaac and Sam of Cobble Hill, and many friends from near and far.
There will be a very informal Celebration of Life Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the Eagles Hall (1994 – 14th Ave., Campbell River) from 1-4. In lieu of fl owers, your consideration of a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C., or the Canadian Institute for the Blind would be greatly appreciated.

Wood,Charles FrankOctober 26, 1920 – December 6, 2011
Born October 26, 1920 to James and Emily Wood in Vancouver, BC, passed away peacefully at the Campbell River and District General Hospital on December 6, 2011.
Predeceased by his parents, infant granddaughters Amy Noelle Wood and Emily Rebecca Wood, his loving wife Doreen (2008) and sister Jean Allan (2009).
Dad became a pen pal with Mom through a stamp magazine; she lived in British Guyana, South America and came to Canada and they were married in Vancouver December 1949. The moved to Namu where Dad was the wireless operator and also ran the local post offi ce. An assistant postmaster position came available in Campbell River so they moved in 1953 and he worked until his retirement in 1982.
He and Mom enjoyed the many trips they took with the Happy Wanderers to Reno, Nashville, Spain and Hawaii. He was an avid reader, stamp collector, enjoyed watching the Vancouver Canuck games, but his passion was listening to music especially classical and opera. He started playing the violin at age 11 and was a member of the Vancouver Orchestra.
He is survived by sons David (Patti), Paul Wood of Maple Ridge, daughter Susan Lorentz (Alvis) and grandchildren Allison Wood Panter (Jay), Allan Wood, Steven Lorentz (Amber) of Edmonton, Derek Lorentz and Aiden Snyder. Also, great grandchildren Kolby Wood, Ethan and Zoe Lorentz. He will be missed by many who enjoyed Dad’s great sense of humour and his jokes. Special thanks to Dennis Lukey for your visits with Dad, he so enjoyed getting the NHL pool sheets each season.
Our family would like to express their special thanks to Dr. Robert Ramsay, the third fl oor nursing staff, especially Sarah, during his brief hospital stay. We appreciate your kindness and caring.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Sutton’s Funeral Home, 502 South Dogwood Street, Campbell River, BC on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 2:00pm. A reception of cake and refreshments will follow the Service. Cremation entrusted to Mission Hill Crematorium. Flowers are gratefully accepted or donations in memory of Charles may be made to the Heart or Kidney foundations.

John OakleySeptember 27, 1935 – Dec 26, 2011
Sadly, on boxing day the Oakley clan lost one of its strongest patriarchs. With his wife, daughters and son at his side. John Oakley passed quietly away at Campbell River Hospital.
He is survived by many loved ones: his wife of 52 years, Carol, son Dennis (Joan), daughters Donna (Eric), Darlene (Jim); his brothers Peter (Joan) and David (Barbara) and grandchildren Michael (Jenna), Justin, Ryan, Brandon (Sarah) and Alicia (Cameron).
First and foremost John was a dedicated & loving family man referred to as “Papa Bear”. In his youth he was a member of the British Army between 1954-56. He followed his national service with a Canadian adventure. Arriving in BC in 1957. As a hardworking union member he spent his career as a glazier but has enjoyed his retirement with Carol being a keen naturalist keeping watch for feathered friends, wildlife and tenderly caring for his rescued plants and fl owers in the garden.
He will be sorely missed and forever loved.

North Island Dis-tance Education School (NIDES) is changing with the times, and to reflect this, both the name and branding of the school are chang-ing.
Following the district protocol, and work-ing with students, staff, parents, school trustees and a local marketing company, NIDES renamed itself “Navigate”. Although the legal name of the school is still North Island Distance Edu-cation School (NIDES), for branding and
marketing purposes the school will now be known as Navi-gate. The branding will incorporate both names: “Navigate: pow-ered by NIDES.”
“Navigate was cho-sen because it reflects the school’s commit-ment to personalized learning, exploration and the sense of being on an educational jour-ney,” says Stewart.
Principal Jeff Stew-art says that the name and logo were changed for multiple reasons. Historically NIDES was known as a school
for North Island stu-dents living at a dis-tance from a brick-and-mortar school. NIDES now serves students in 130 secondary schools located throughout BC, over 1200 cross-enrolled students, and over 1300 adult students, making the name of the school less appropriate.
Stewart and his team have developed and initiated innovative new programs, like the recently announced Fine Arts eCademy, the ENTER program and the Rosetta Stone TOTALe® program.
“Some of our pro-grams are cutting-edge in the education world and all of them use technology in use-ful and progressive ways” says NIDES Principal Jeff Stewart, “It was time to ensure our school’s brand reflected that.”
Navigate is also preparing the school for the International Online Student mar-ket, which is currently in its infancy in the province. The new name and branding will appeal to this mar-ket, says Stewart.
The staff at Navigate will be launching their brand in the New Year and will launch a new website at the end of January.

Salvation Road Sanc-tuary Society, Camp-bell River, has joined other animal welfare organizations in the area that list their homeless pets on Pet-finder.com, the oldest and largest database of adoptable animals on the Internet.
The site currently has over 359,000
homeless pets listed, and it is updated con-tinuously. More than 13,500 animal welfare organizations in the U.S., Canada, and other countries post their pets on the site.
BC206 pets may be viewed at http://www.petfinder.com/shel-ters/BC206.html.
A potential adopter
enters search criteria for the kind of pet he or she wants, and a list is returned that ranks the pets in proximity to the Zip code entered. Adop-tions are handled by the animal placement group where the pet is housed, and each group has its own poli-cies.
Petfinder.com was created in early 1996 as a grassroots project by Jared and Betsy Saul to end the eutha-nasia of adoptable pets. Since its incep-tion, the site has facil-itated approximately 20 million adoptions, making it the most life-saving initiative in animal welfare.

There are a number of tree chip-ping options for residents of the Comox Strathcona waste manage-ment (CSWM) region this year.
A one-day tree chipping event is being held at the Campbell River Sportsplex on Saturday, Jan. 7 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
You can also take your Christmas tree to the CSWM’s waste manage-ment centres, in the Comox Valley at 2400 Pidgeon Lake Road, Cum-berland or in Campbell River at 6700 Argonaut Road.
Christmas trees will be accepted free of charge at both locations. Both waste management centres are open seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The waste management centres will be closed on New Year’s Day.
No matter what disposal method you choose, be sure to remove all of the tinsel and decorations first.
The Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) service is a function of the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and is responsible for two regional waste management centres that serve the Comox Valley and Campbell River, as well as a range of transfer sta-tions and smaller waste-handling and recycling facilities for the elec-toral areas of the CVRD and the Strathcona Regional District.
The CSWM service manages over 100,000 tonnes of waste and recycled material and oversees a number of diversion and educa-
tion programs.
Other tree chipping options:Meanwhile, a couple of local
businesses are offering tree chip-ping services to benefit good causes and the Black Creek Rec-reation Association is doing it in Black Creek.
This weekend, Timberwolf Tree Service will chip trees at the Cana-dian Tire Garden Centre Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For your donation, they will chip your tree and provide free coffee and hot dogs.
The donation will benefit the Mountaire Avian Rescue Society and the BC SPCA.
On Saturday, Jan. 7, bring your Christmas tree to the Campbell River Bottle Depot (1580-F Willow St.) and enjoy hot chocolate and cookies while your tree is chippped by Curt’s Tree Services by dona-tion. All proceeds will go towards the Saturday Soup Kitchen.
On Monday, Jan. 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Black Creek Community Centre will be holding its annual Christmas tree disposal day.
Bring your used Christmas tree to the BCCA for disposal by an onsite chipper.

Just because a fi lling is old or silver in colour does not mean it requires replacement. Today’s fi lling materials last longer than ever and unless decay is noted or the restoration is breaking down fi llings should be left alone. The Comox Strathcona waste management service supports reducing holiday waste as you shop, entertain and clean up after the holiday celebrations. Recycling is one way to “reduce holiday waste” but the real key to making a dent on the amount of holiday waste is to move beyond recycling to reuse and reduce. When everyone does their part to “reduce holiday waste” our region can rejoice knowing that all our efforts made a big difference at our local landfills.
