A NOTE FROM FATHER
JOHN IRELAND NEWS
Dear Parishioners,
Our deepest sympathy to the families of Violet Bauer, Donna Welter, Heather Giefer, and Patrick Anton.
May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
This weekend we enter the season of Advent. It starts four Sundays before Christmas, and as Christmas falls
on a Monday, our Advent this year is the shortest it can be. That does not lessen, however, the impact these
three weeks and one day can be, if we are deliberate about them. To get the most out of the season, we
should resist the temptation to rush to Christmas by decorating to early or getting caught up in the secular/
consumerism aspects of the worldly celebration - we have almost three weeks of Christmas to celebrate
after December 25th. We should prepare spiritually. Coming to the Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of
the best gifts we can give ourselves - the ability to be healed and set free. Praying with Scripture, especially
the daily Mass readings (they are listed elsewhere in the bulletin for your ease, or find them at http://
www.usccb.org/bible/readings/ is a great way of beginning to use Scripture, but also to enter into the
season of Advent as these are reading specifically chosen by the Church of Advent preparations. Another
form of prayer, the Consciousness Examen, (asking the Spirit for help, prayerful reflecting on the presence of
God throughout the day, and offering to Him your day) is a great means to prepare our hearts. Family
traditions like the Advent wreath or Advent Calendar (see the back of the AFC Calendar for one idea) are
great ways to count down to Christmas. I know some families that place their creche without the figures out,
and give the children pieces of straw for the kind deeds or acts of virtue they did through the day and
season of Advent, so that when the Christ Child figure was placed, He had a wonderfully soft place to lay.
Again, Advent is just 3 weeks and a day - let’s use it to the best of our ability.
In Christ, Fr. Todd

Prayer Warriors Needed
Please consider being a prayer warrior for our Parish
Mission coming in January. How do you become a
prayer warrior? All you need to do is add the Parish
Mission to your daily prayers and add in the specific
intention each week. This week’s intention is:
That any feelings of complacency in our hearts
would be replaced by a burning desire for the
authentic love of Jesus Christ.
