Questions? Jeff Sprague
As you may know, several of the members of the teen club asked me last year if they could do a special event to raise money for Toys For Tots. They knew that we already run the giving tree and didn’t want to compete with the Knight of Columbus and take any revenue away from them and their noble endeavor to build houses for people in Haiti. I told them I was sure that would not be the case, that you would support both causes. The Knights were most supportive of the teens and both projects made their goal last year. They were so moved by the generosity of the people of St. Ann’s that they asked to do another event in the springtime. They ran Cancer Fight 2017 to raise money to support St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and raise awareness of childhood cancer. That too was a tremendous success. Mayor Spano and several other politicians came and supported them, and they were honored by the Yonkers City Council. This week our teen club is holding Wish Week 2017. They are raising money to support the Hudson Valley chapter of the Make-A-Wish foundation, which helps make wishes come true for children facing life-threatening illnesses. They have already made and exceeded their goal of $1,500! This year, they are being honored by the presence of Cardinal Dolan in addition to Mayor Spano at the movie night this coming Saturday. The New York Jets also made a contribution and gave the teens discount tickets to last Sunday’s game with an on-field visit before the game. Too bad the Jets lost!!!
I wish to thank the teen club for taking the initiative in these programs. They do all the work themselves. All I’ve had to do is give permission and guidance when they needed it. They are a truly amazing group of teenagers. I have been working with high school students for twenty-seven years, and I can say with all honesty that they are the finest teens I have ever had the privilege to serve. Many times in the past it was like pulling teeth to get the kids interested in any spiritual or social ministry. Not our kids! They’d be upset if our meetings were only fun and games with no message. I have said before that if they are the future of the Church, the Church is in good hands! I have no doubt that they will all be leaders in the Church as adults, as they are already leaders now. I am looking forward to our Youth Pilgrimage to Rome with the teens and young adults this July, as I know they will truly see it as a spiritual event and not merely a vacation. Thank you for all the support you have given them in the past. I hope you will be able to attend some of the activities they have planned this week. There is a flyer in today’s bulletin with all the information. I hope to see you there!
