WE ARE GOD’S HOLY FAMILY The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of bar-ren couples who were miracu-lously granted the gift of chil-dren by God. Surely the best known among these is the first reading from today, from which Luke took inspiration when he recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth, and the more mi-raculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we are given examples or role mod-els of those who trusted in God. More than examples of those who trust, they are mod-els of self-surrender. They abandoned their own pre-suppositions and prejudices about the workings of the world and turned their lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all the world. This is what we, as God’s holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in our-selves and the way we think things should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of endless promise.

SOMOS LA SAGRADA FAMI-LIA DE DIOS Las lecturas de Israel es-tán repletas de relatos de parejas estériles a quienes Dios les con-cedió el milagro de tener hijos. Sin duda el relato más conocido es el de la primera lectura de hoy: Lucas se inspiró en este relato para contar el milagroso naci-miento de Juan Bautista, hijo de Zacarías e Isabel, y el nacimiento aun más milagroso de Jesús, hijo de María y José. En ambos casos, vemos ejemplos o modelos a se-guir de personas que confiaron en Dios. Más que ser ejemplos de personas que confiaron, son mo-

delos de entrega incondicional de sí. Abandonaron sus propios preconceptos y prejuicios sobre el funciona-miento del mundo y entregaron sus vidas a creer en un Dios que puede hacer que haya vida en lugares en don-de era inconcebible que la hubiera; un Dios que puede convertir la muerte en una vida nueva e inimaginable; un Dios que puede, hoy, tomar a un niñito de padres humildes en un pueblo insignificante y convertirlo en una luz para el mundo entero. Esto es a lo que se nos llama a hacer cada día como Sagrada Familia de Dios: confiar no sólo en nosotros mismos y en la manera en que pensamos que deberían ser las cosas, sino a abrir-nos y entregarnos en fe a un Dios de promesa infinita.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the last century, a few new feasts were blended into the Church year, including today’s. After World War I, the chaos of daily life in Eu-rope made its impact felt on the family structure. Partly to offer Christians an image of hope and holi-

ness in married family life, and also to promote the wel-fare of children, today’s feast was “invented” in 1921. In 1969, it became a feast of Christmas. The prayers today remind us not only of family life, but of life in the community of faith. We ponder the mys-tery of a God who loves us dearly enough to embrace the struggles, joys, and daily sorrows of family life. The mes-sage of Christmas shines through: God-with-us is availa-ble to us in the ordinary patterns of our lives and commit-ments. The lives of people who raise their children in dif-ficult circumstances, and of people who remain faithful to life in the Church in spite of some of their own family struggles, occupy a special place in our hearts today in prayer.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Durante siglos, en el continente latinoameri-cano, el respeto a los ancia-nos ha sido la base social que nutre nuestras culturas. Lamentablemente este res-peto empieza a desvanecer-se por la invasión de una mentalidad occidental que

valora sólo la juventud. A nuestro alrededor hay muchos de nuestros mayores menospreciados y olvidados por su avanzada edad y fragilidad. A su vez, vemos muchos ni-ños vagabundeando y mal formándose por la falta de su-pervisión adulta. Es necesario que estos ancianos y niños se encuentren y se bendigan mutuamente. San Lucas (2:22-40) recuerda dos bellos momentos en la infancia de Jesucristo: la bendición del anciano Si-meón y el encuentro con Ana, la profetisa. Estos dos an-cianos piadosos frecuentaban al templo de Jerusalén con la esperanza de ver al Mesías. Me imagino que José y María se sorprendieron mucho cuando se les acercaron estos dos viejitos. Pero la santa pareja no les negó su niñi-to a los brazos de estos dos ancianos. El niño les alegró la vida y ellos glorificaron a Dios. La bendición que le die-ron a Jesús lo acompañó toda su vida.

A special expression of gratitude goes to Nick, and Rob-erto for their on-going help and taking care of much of the heavy work. Thank you too, to the members of the Altar Socie-ty who cleaned and prepared the Church. Without everyone’s generosity and time taken from busy schedules, we would not have been able to pull it all together. Many hands make light work.
