Let me begin with a stunning understatement: Everyone wants to have a good family. And our readings this weekend give advice on how to have one. Sirach teaches us to take care of our fathers and be kind to them. Saint Paul reminds us to practice compassion, patience and forgiveness. If we desire to have a good family, it’s necessary to let go of grudges and practice such things as patience and compassion. But there’s nothing particularly religious about this. Any family therapist would give the same exact advice as Sirach and Paul give us. As disciples of Jesus, we are not called to become good – we’re called to become holy. We always celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family on the Sunday following Christmas. As such, we hold up the home of Jesus, Mary and Joseph as thee model for holiness for all Christian families. What makes this family of Nazareth holy is that they obey God. They subordinate their love for each other to their love for God. Consider the example of Saint Joseph. He was told by God to take Mary as his wife, no doubt causing tongues to wag and eyebrows to raise. He was later commanded to take the Child and His mother on two dangerous journeys. Joseph always situated his love for them within the framework of his love for God – his love for God always coming first. This is precisely what makes a family holy. My own father once told me what happened when he asked my mom to marry him. She said ‘yes’ but with one string attached – she would always love God first! We celebrate the Feast of The Holy Family, not the Feast of The Good Family. May our families become holy by imitating the obedience of Jesus, Mary and Joseph! Children’s Liturgy

Dear Friends, The Christmas season is upon us and our last weeks of school before the holiday were filled with faith, festivitiesb and fun! Faculty and Staff Twelve Days of Christmas: The faculty and staff celebrated the 12 Days of Christmas during the month of December. Each calendar date listed a spe-cial event, from themed-dress down days to small gifts and treats. For example, the first day of Christmas said “spread holi-day cheer near and far and tell a colleague why they’re a star.” Each staff member wrote a note of encouragement on a yellow star and delivered it to a colleague. One of the favorites was Day 7 which said, “if your students are making you loco, stop by the faculty room for some yummy hot cocoa!” Everyone was treated to a hot cocoa bar with chocolate stirring spoons, mini-marshmallows, chocolate chips and whipped cream. And who can resist “being a show stopper by wearing a favorite holiday tree topper”?! Check out these fun photos…

Computer Advent Project: Our sixth grade students created computer art projects in which they listed all of the words that were important to them about Advent and picked a shape template. The computer program inserts the words into the template and adjusts the size according to frequency -- the more often a stu-dent enters a word, the larger it appears in the final product. The projects are so creative! May the peace and love of Christ fill your homes during this blessed season! God bless, Dawn Parker

St. Vincent DePaul

Thank you for your contin-ued generosity and love at Christmas, you have reached out and touched many people who are in need by offering both material and spiritual sup-port. Your gifts of toys, clothes, food and trimmings have reached young and old, sick and healthy, poor and people who are alone during the holidays. You have made a great difference in their lives by simply taking a small tag off the Christmas tree or by getting a code number for a family and responding to a call for help. There is no end to your generosity because it is rooted in God’s love. Thank you for sharing that love and for teaching your children about the gift of giving.

What is the Prayer Chain? Our Prayer Chain was established many years ago for anyone needing prayers for a variety of situations happening in their life. The situation may be social, finan-cial, health related or simply a personal concern that might be needed for spiritual support. A request may be made by yourself or by someone on your behalf. To request prayers, please call Barbara at 215-345-6219; she will take any information you wish to share. She will in turn pass your request along to the person heading up the email chain. The email contact list has over 40 dedicated persons who are ready to begin praying. All requests will remain on the list for approximately one month; however, the duration may exceed the one month time if needed. Should you wish to become a member of the prayer chain, please call Barbara; an email address is needed. Often the question of “How do I pray?” is asked. The answer is simple – ANY WAY YOU WISH. It could be a Rosary, a single prayer, an aspiration or just asking God to support those who requested help.

Celebrating This Week’s Liturgy

An Examination Of Conscience Quick Guide

1. Where do we place our passion? Politics, The News or God? That is, where do we spend down our time and energy?

2. Do we use God’s Name casually or treat it with reverence and awe?

3. Do we rest with our families and friends on Sundays? 4. Have we done anything that would bring dishonor to our

parents (living or deceased)? 5. Have we destroyed someone’s reputation with gossip? 6. Have we reduced others to objects? 7. Have you padded an expense account or not given an

honest day’s work? 8. Have you told the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the

truth? Think about that for awhile. 9. Have you desired something or someone SO BAD that you

wanted take that very thing or person for yourself?

Pray With Our Pastor You are invited to spend 10-15 minutes each night at 9pm praying Night Prayer with our Pastor, Father Matthew Guckin. Simply go to our parish Facebook page - Our Lady Of Mt Carmel, Doylestown - at 9pm to join with others in prayer. It's better than watching the news and you'll sleep better. If you need assistance with this,

please call the rectory at 215-348-4190.
