FAMILY

Relationships give purpose and meaning to life.

This is what our faith is all about. All the Scriptures, the Ten Commandments, Church Law are all relational. What gives us a lasting good feeling is not the gifts we receive, but the relationship behind the gift - love. We may remember gifts from Christmas long ago or from a birthday/anniversary celebration, but it was the person behind the gift and the relationship that we shared with them that made it special and memorable.

“Do this in memory of me.” The words Jesus spoke at the Last Supper. We remember them not just because they were some of the last words Jesus spoke, but because they touched us so deeply. Jesus gives us the gift of himself in the Eucharist each time we receive his body and blood. The same is true for relatives and friends. We remember because they shared the gift of self with us.

As we celebrate both Christmas and the Feast of the Holy Family so close to each other, I encourage you to share the gift of yourself with family and friends. Take time to write those special notes with or without gifts about why each family member is so special. When we truly love we are more willing to forgive. When we truly love we give our time and talents when needed not just when convenient. Parents sacrifice for children to have the best education possible. Children learn from parents the true meaning of Christmas not from words alone, but actions, participating in family responsibilities, learning that each child has a special place within the family.

In the midst of all the gifts, glitter, decorations, good food and drink, take time to worship as a family both on Christmas and the feast of the Holy Family. God so loved the world that he embraced our humanity by becoming one like us, born the babe in Bethlehem. We show our love of God by embracing His Son, Jesus, in Word and Sacrament each Sunday. Is it a sacrifice? Yes. The benefits far outweigh the sacrifice made now. That is why parents sacrifice to give their children the best education, the best gifts they can afford, the best food and security. Give your family the best foundation for the future - the gift of faith. Make a new commitment to worship as a family. Discover what God has in store for you through sharing your reflections with each other as you hear the Word of God and receive Christ in the Eucharist.

As God embraced humanity and blessed us with His Presence, may you embrace the Divine and bring his blessings to family and friends this Holy Christmas Season.

A Blessed and Merry Christmas! Fr. Ken Fleck

A HOLY SEASON

Christmas... Contrary to popular belief, it is not just one day! It is, in fact, a Holy Season. Traditionally, the Epiphany was celebrated

twelve days after Christmas on January 6. (Does anyone remember the popular Christmas carol celebrating the gifts from "my true

love"?) Feasts celebrated in those twelve days include the Holy Family, Mary the Mother of God and the Epiphany. Many of us

remember the official close of the Christmas season as the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas Day) on February 2! Our

secular society seems to celebrate Christmas (or at least promote it) from the day after Thanksgiving (or even the day after Halloween)

until December 25. The radio stations stop playing those holiday songs on December 26, but that does not mean we have to stop

celebrating Christmas too! You have taken time to prepare, now take time to enjoy Christmas ... A HOLY SEASON!

St. George Religious Ed wishes you and your family a blessed Christmas season! We thank all of our families for the support of those in

need during Advent, and we pray that all of your preparations have helped you experience the peace, joy and love of Christ incarnate.

REMINDERS: Fifth Grade Family Mass will be celebrated on January 3 at 11:30 am. The next Religious Ed classes will be on

January 6. There will be no R.E. classes on January 13, but catechetical staff will gather that evening. Thank you for all you do to make

St. George a community of faith!

A Christmas Dream

A man was driving hastily down the road, his wife, feeling

like labor was starting, sat beside him. The hospital was far and they had a long way to go. As luck would have it, the car began to

sputter. Fortunately there was a motel on the side of the road. The

clerk couldn’t help with the car and said there were no rooms

available. The clerk then pointed out that there was a stable out

back. “Funny,” he said, “You’re the second couple tonight to go

down there, but there should be enough room.” When they went down to the stable, it was fairly dark except for a dim lantern in the

corner, and a star shining its light into the stable. The other couple

was there, and there was a newborn child laying in a manger. A

number of shepherds were kneeling before the baby. This scene

slowly faded to the sound of a choir singing Silent Night, Holy

Night. The couple slept peacefully the rest of the night.

When the couple awoke the next morning, as they were

sipping their first cup of coffee while the children were rummaging

through the gifts under the tree, they began to talk about their

dreams. Neither could understand how they both had the exact

same dream. The wife mentioned that she felt the baby move last

night.

God so loved us that He sent His Son to live in our world

and to die for us. And the Son loved us so much that He said He

will be with us until the end of time. And there He is in the Holy

Family Chapel keeping His word. This is a great time to visit with

Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, to say thank you, to pay him homage, and maybe even say “Happy Birthday.” And why not call

Bill Beckman at (708) 429-2762 and sign up to spend an hour each

week with the Blessed Sacrament, and keep the spirit of that first

Christmas going all year long.

"For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Drawing on the boy's own journals and vivid memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, Brown has created an unforgettable portrait of an era, a celebration of a remarkable achievement and chronicle of one extraordinary young man's personal quest."

Living the Works of Mercy ---

Feeding the Hungry

Through the generosity of St. George parishioners, our Youth Ministry program is able to sponsor a monthly intergenerational trip to Daybreak Shelter in Joliet, where we prepare dinner for residents on a regular basis. Each month, family members ages 6 through 76 join together to purchase, prepare and serve dinners. On December 8, we fed 65 residents a meal of chicken casserole, buttered noodles, mac n cheese, bread, butter, garden salad and some home made baked goods from Father Ken. On December 31, a group will be ending off the year once again preparing dinner, complete with top hats and noisemakers, to feed those in the shelter on New Year's Eve. If you would like to know more about our upcoming trips to Daybreak, please keep checking the bulletins, watch our parish website, or contact Fran Fancsali at

[email protected].

If you want to REALLY start the New Year off right, mark you calendars now to help make New Year's Eve special for the Daybreak residents!!!! You will still have plenty of time when we return to ring in the New Year with your family and friends, and you will feel so good doing it! If you are under 18, you will need to download and fill out a permission form from the parish website. Contact Fran Fancsali at [email protected], or call (708) 429-3979 to sign up to help.

Join us for Coffee and Hot Chocolate - Sunday, January 3 - 8:30 - 1:00 pm

Although the weather outside might not be

quite so frightful, please join us for some

refreshments after all the Sunday morning

Masses on Sunday, January 3 in the Parish

Life Center. At our World Youth Day celebration, so

many people commented on how nice it was to gather

for a few minutes and enjoy a "cup of" with fellow

parishioners, that Adult Faith Formation and Youth

Ministry are hoping to make this a regular

happening at St. George. This month, we will

have a coffee and hot chocolate bar,

with toppings, juice (for the warm blooded) and

some continental breakfast items for all to

enjoy. So just "let it snow" out in the real world, and

stop by for a few warming minutes Sunday morning.

Donations of finger goodies are welcome to help stock

our refreshment table. Here is a great way to get rid of

all those extra calories you have laying around the

house after the holidays! Drop them

off Saturday afternoon in the rectory office

or drop them off in the Cahill center on

your way to Mass Sunday morning. Hope

to see you there!

December 27, 2015 • Blessings to you and your loved ones this Christmas season. 11

Saturday Mornings Beginning January 9 – 6:30 to 8:00 am!O’Connell Hall at St. George Parish School in Tinley Park

The St. George That Man Is You! program has become a popular way to start the weekend! More than fifty men representing at least seven different parishes in our local area have joined the group since we kicked off in mid-September.

That Man is You! is a program that includes video presentations and small group discussions focused on the encouragement and support of Catholic men in the modern world. During our Fall semester we examined the type of culture we currently find ourselves in, the consequences of failed male leadership and how all of this relates specifically to the family. As we begin our Spring semester, we will focus on the struggle occurring in the heart of man between those things which would crush and enslave him and those which would allow him to become all that he was created to be. We’ll take an honest look at the temptations confronting modern man to live a life independent of God, and discuss those things which can help expand the human heart: the ability of the mind to touch God, the ability to find God in one’s self and other people and the liberating power of mercy.! !That Man Is You! meets every Saturday morning for breakfast in O’Connell Hall and is open to all adult men, 18 and older. It’s not necessary to attend every Saturday – just come whenever you can!! !Please Join Us & Bring A Friend!! !For more information about this program, please contact Don Budny at

(708) 429-1823; [email protected] or Gary Hendzell at (708) 614-1734;

Anointing of the Sick

On the first Saturday of every month there will be an anointing of the sick after the 8:00 am Mass. The next anointing will take

place Saturday, January 2 after the 8:00 am Mass.

The anointing of the sick conveys several graces and imparts gifts of strengthening in the Holy Spirit against anxiety,

discouragement, and temptation, and conveys peace and fortitude (CCC 1520). These graces flow from the atoning death of

Jesus Christ, for "this was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, ‘He took our infirmities and bore our

diseases’" (Matt. 8:17).

Does a person have to be dying to receive this sacrament? No. The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a

person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient.

The Sacrament may be repeated if the sick person recovers after the anointing, but becomes ill once again, or if, during the same

illness, the person's condition becomes more serious. A person should be anointed before surgery when a dangerous illness is the

reason for the intervention (cf. Rite of Anointing, Introduction, nos. 8-10).
