By Vince AlbrechtOAKLAND, NJ- There arent

    enough superlatives to describe the

    telephone numbers posted by Stan

    Niemiecs young bowlers in the

    leagues get-together at Holiday

Bowl. The battered pins may soon

need to be replaced by management,

having been floored mercilessly to the

tune of thirteen 600+ sets and forty-

    one deuces.

Leading the onslaught were St Joseph

    [Montvale] sophomore Nathan Tombo

    and Paramus Catholic senior James

    Kane, both with 768 threesomes.

Nathan, who flirted twice with perfec-

tion his final two games, splintered the

maples with 237-277-254 while James245-267-256 obliterated the helpless

    plastic-coats. The 15-year-old Tombo lit

a fire under his Bowler City III mates as

they out-distanced a game but over-

    matched Fair Lawn quartet, 3175-2900.

    Anchor Nick Reyes fired 234-209-634,

    Derek Lewandowski 212 and Tiffany

Sucero 192 in BC IIIs sweep of the

    contest. Fair Lawn, motivated by

    anchor Steve Plaszkys masterful 218-

    216-256-690 and Madison Perrys 203,

came close to salvaging the middle

    game, dropping the nail-biter, 1003-

    995. In the other high-scoring

    encounter, Kanes super set didnt

    detract from his teammate Kyle

    Schellberg who pounded out numbers

    of his own, 234-214-269-717 as

    Bowler City I swept past T-Bowl, 3094-

2854. The latter battled, posting decent

totals as Matt Morris scored 203-580

    and Pat Mayer 204-576.

    In other action, Erik Kattermann

blasted a closing 279, the afternoons

best single, and finished with 675,

leading Boonton to a hard-earned five

    points against talented North

    Arlington, 3027-2939. Erik had sup-

port from his squad as Sean McGuire

    excelled with 212-221-626, Adam

Gelvan 204-190 and Drew Gille 184.Pacing the formidable North

    Arlington quartet were Chris Liloia

    237-221-650, Tyler Keefe 232-225-

    649 and Haley Hassan 205.

    The Holiday entries played each

    other, with defending champ Holiday

I gaining four points with one-pin and

    nineteen-pin triumphs while Holiday

II came away with a strong second

    game and total wood, 2784-2740.

Triggers for the winners were David

Neil 215-194 and Nick Cilento 191-

    193. Rolling well for Holiday II were

    DePaul senior Joe Malyack 256-248-

    664, Tom Chamberlain 202-204 and

Justin Milligan 191. Closing out the

session, Lodi enjoyed its best outing

of the season, sweeping seven points

    from Bowler City II, 2991-2809

    behind Nick Ferrante 205-201-604,

    Steve Kropilak 209, Louis Ferrante

    202 and Chris Navarro 198.

Delivering fine numbers for BC II

    was Dean Edwards 222-204-606.

    League-leading Montvale put togeth-

er a strong enough effort to earn seven

    points from the vacancy primarily

due to Matt Russell 213-220-604 and

    Dan Sproviero 213-590.

LAS VEGAS Anthony Pepe of Elmhurst, New York, in his national

television debut, won the PBA Cheetah Championship presented by

PBA Challenge Mobile Game at the new South Point Bowling Plaza

with an emotional 224-206 come-from-behind victory over top quali-

fier Dick Allen of Columbia, South Carolina.

The Cheetah finals, the first of five GEICO PBA World Series of

Bowling VI title events, aired on ESPN. It also was the first national

telecast originating from the new state-of-the-art 60-lane bowling

facility at the South Point Casino, Hotel and Spa complex on Las

Vegas south side. After converting the 6-10 in the first frame of the title match, Allen ran

off a string of six strikes to take control of the match, But a 2-4-6-7-9-10

split in the eighth frame, a 6-7 split in the ninth frame and a pocket 7-10

in the 10th frame opened the door for Pepe. After leaving back-to-back

6 pins in the eighth and ninth frames, Pepe threw three strikes in the 10th

    frame to clinch the title.

I couldnt believe it when (Dick) left that split in the 10th frame, but I

just told myself to stay calm and execute a good shot, Pepe said. After

all of those hours of working hard, practicing alone, for this moment, its unbelievable.

    In the opening three-player, all-New York shootout match, Pepe, a 26-year-old self-pro-

claimed healthy-lifestyle advocate, thrilled the crowd by taking a perfect game to his final

shot, where he faltered, leaving the 2-4-6-7-8 for a 295 game. It was more than enough to

eliminate Brad Angelo of Lockport, who rolled a 226 game, and to spoil the title dreams

of Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, who finished with a 224. The first woman ever to quali-

fy for two PBA TV finals had hopes of joining Kelly Kulick as the sec-

ond woman to win a PBA Tour title, but Pepe made sure she never had

room to recover after she left the 4-6-7-10 split in her second frame.

Pepe came within one shot of matching a feat performed only one

other time in PBA history: a 300 game in a players first-ever game on

national television. Bob Benoit of Topeka, Kansas, is the only player to

do that, winning the 1988 Quaker State Open in Fort Worth, Texas, with

a 300-255 victory over PBA legend Mark Roth.

On that 12th shot, I was a bundle of nerves, Pepe admitted. To

think I had the first 11 strikes in my first game on TVI kinda grabbed(the ball) at the bottom (of my arm swing) and I paid the penalty.

Pepe also refused to give in to Allen in the title match, despite missing

a 7 pin in the sixth frame which put him in a 29-pin hole with four

    frames to go.

I just told myself to make better shots, he said. It was unfortunate

what happened to Dick, especially in the 10th frame he threw that (7-

    10) shot really well but I came up in the 10th and knew I only needed

a mark a win. When all 10 pins fell down, I fell down, too.

There are no words to describe the feeling, Pepe continued. Ive dreamed of this since

I was a little kid. (PBA Tour champions) Patrick Allen, Mike Fagan and Ryan Shafer all

told me to get my PBA card because they thought I had the potential to be successful out

here. That kinda gave me a little confidence. That meant so much to me and the fact Im

now holding this trophy, well, its an indescribable feeling.

    surprisingly, by Holiday Is

    smooth anchor Frank Magyar

who, for the third straight week,

had high threesome tossing 218-193-258-669. With Nick Cilento

    202-214 and Ryan McGuire 188-
