December Devotion O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

December Prayer

O Virgin Immaculate, Mother of God and my Mother, from thy sublime height turn upon me thine eyes of pity. Filled with confidence in thy goodness and knowing full well thy power, I beseech thee to extend to me thine assistance in the journey of life, which is so full of danger for my soul. And in order that I may never be the slave of the devil through sin, but may ever live with my heart humble and pure, I entrust myself wholly to thee. I consecrate my heart to thee for ever, my only desire being to love thy divine Son Jesus. Mary, none of thy devout servants has ever perished; may I too be saved. Amen.

Finally, we come to the end of Advent on this Fourth Sunday of Advent. Up until now, we have not heard much about the birth of Jesus. Today, our Gospel speaks of the mystery of the Incarnation by saying “Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about” (Matthew 1:18).

The Gospel of Matthew tells the story of the birth of Jesus from Joseph's perspective. We must not gloss over too quickly the difficult circumstances described in today's Gospel. The way that Joseph and Mary face these circumstances tells us much about these holy people and their faith in God. Joseph and Mary are betrothed to be married. This is sometimes described as an engagement period, but it is more than that. Betrothal in first century Jewish culture was in fact the first part of the marriage contract. A breach of this contract was considered adultery. Mary is found to be with child. If adultery is proven, the punishment might be death. Joseph has rights under Mosaic law, but chooses to act discreetly in his plans to break the marriage contract, so as to protect Mary. Then God intervenes.

The message of the angel of the Lord given to Joseph in his dream tells us much about the child that Mary bears and his role in God's plan. He is conceived by the Holy Spirit. His name will be Jesus, which in the Hebrew means “Yahweh saves.” He will be the fulfillment of the prophecy heard in today's first reading from Isaiah: “. . . The virgin shall be with child . . . and shall name him Emmanuel which means “God with us.”

Joseph does as the angel of the Lord directs. He takes Mary to be his wife and accepts the child in her womb as his own. Joseph and Mary are both cooperative with God's plan. They are both models for us of what it means to be faithful servants of God.

PS- Please check the bulletin and website carefully as some Christmas Mass times have changed. Christmas is a busy time of year, and parking this year, as in the past, will be assisted by the Knights of Columbus. Please be patient and kind when parking. Safety is important. Merry Christmas!

Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, Fr. Greg

The Knights Korner The four principles of the Knights of Columbus are Charity, Fraternity, Unity and Patriotism. Each of these are expressed and appreciated in different ways, but this Knights Korner will focus on Fraternity and Unity. On December 6, the Knights and Columbiettes joined together in a wonderful Christmas dinner held at the City Club in downtown Wilmington. This beautiful antebellum home (founded in 1841) was a perfect location to celebrate the beginning of the Advent season and the anticipation of the coming of our Lord. It was all decked out with Christmas trees and lots of good food…..but, most importantly, it was full of the spirit of friendship united in the spirit of Christ. Following the event, Adoration continued in the chapel with two Knights Adoring for each hour of the rest of the night. The Holy Spirit was an overwhelming presence throughout the night. Merry Christmas to All!! If you have an interest in learning how to become a Knight, please contact Larry Greer at “[email protected]”.

4th Sunday of Advent Welcoming Light - Matthew 1: 18-24 When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took Mary as his wife. (Matthew 1:24)

Living the Word: Today we hear the central message of the Advent Season: God is with us! Mary was afraid when the angel announced to her the message and that she had been chosen and called by God, but her faith was great and strong. So too, we are chosen and called to make the light of Christ shine throughout our day and the world! Talk to your family about how Mary and Joseph must have felt. How has each family member been chosen to live as a light of Christ?

Questions of the Week: Child: What could you do this week to make someone feel welcome, as Joseph welcomed Mary? Adult: Whom do you find it difficult to welcome in your life? What can you do to overcome it?

Fun Facts: December 27th is the feast of the youngest apostle, St. John. He was one of Jesus’ special friends, and the only apostle who was with Jesus as the Crucifixion. Sometime when you are young, you don’t feel very important or powerful ---- but you are! You have the power to make someone else smile or feel happy or feel loved! Use your important power today!
