Beauty
and the
BeastWhile it may be beautiful to gaze
upon, a solid week of freezing
frost wreaked a bit of havoc in
the Opheim area. Leslie Bishop
took this photo of their yard
(thats her son Jackson to the
left of the tree). The weight ofthe frost snapped limbs on trees
and caused several power poles
to topple. The Bishop family had
to have Mattfeldt Electric come
up this past Friday and restore
their electricity as the power line
to their house lost the battle to
frost. They went more than a
day without power.
Here in Glasgow we had some
freezing rain on Sunday which
made for some slick conditions AWinter Weather Advisory remains
in effect through 11 p.m. this
evening. Glasgow has 1.5 inches
of snow in the forecast while
2-4 inches are in the forecast to
the east of us. In addition, gusty
northwest winds will produce
areas of blowing and drifting
snow. Some roads will also have
black ice on them from rain and
freezing rain that fell last night.

Nowadays, it seems like Christmas is all about thepresents under the tree, but in simpler times, ood wasone o the ocal points o holiday tradition. Te sweetsmell o gingerbread wafing and the clatter o metalcookie cutters echoing through the house used toannounce the arrival o the holiday season.
Cookies for Santa We dont typically adorn ourtrees with ood, but in medieval Germany, apples, waers, and cookies were commonplace as ornaments. Once thistradition merged with Christianity and the tree becamea symbol o Christmas, children began to notice thedisappearance o edible tree ornaments. Te vanishing odecorations was blamed on Santa who snacked on them.It became traditional to leave a plate o cookies by thefireplace to keep them warm or Santas snack. Tangerines in your stocking?Santa has a list andhes checking it twice. Bad children get coal and the good
ones get tangerines. angerines? In the U.K., good kidstraditionally get a tangerine in their Christmas stocking.Tis practice began with nuns in twelfh-century France, who lef stockings filled with nuts, tangerines, and otherruits at the houses o poor amilies. o their credit, adose o vitamin C is actually a perect gif during thecolder winter months.
