A Prayer for the Family
Jesus, our most loving redeemer,
You came to enlighten the world
with your teaching and example.
You willed to spend the greater part of Your life
in humble obedience to Mary and Joseph
in the poor home of Nazareth.
In this way, You sanctified that family,
which was to be an example for all Christian families.
Graciously accept our family,
which we dedicate and consecrate to You this day.
Be pleased to protect, guard, and keep it
in holy fear, in peace,
and in the harmony of Christian charity.
By conforming ourselves to the Divine model
of Your family,
may we attain to eternal happiness.
New St. Joseph People's Prayer Book
From the Director…
What family gives us the best model in
being a family? What family give us gen-
tleness, humility, patience, and deep mu-
tual concern – the Holy Family of Jesus,
Mary, and Joseph. Our basic call is to
holiness whether we are married, single,
or ordained/religious. We must, each of
us, and each family, and all the commu-
nity must nourish our desire to become a holy and a committed
member of God’s Holy Family.
Pope John Paul canonized many people in order to show us that
holiness can be found everywhere and at all times. He pointed to
single and married couples who were holy and persevered in mari-
tal love, mutual self-giving and harmony, and couples that passed
on their faith to their children. The most important teachers and
the constant models for children is their parents. What the parent’s
model is usually what the children grow to be like and model to
their children.
In our families especially, we have many opportunities to prac-
tice the very virtues Christ asks of us and Paul outlined today in
our second reading. These include patience, fidelity, self-denial,
mercy, and love. Do you see these virtues in your family? Do you
see the fruit of these virtues everyday in your family? If not, what
can you do to see these virtues appear in your family? What kind
of fruit do you see? Is it anger? Arguing? Disrespect? If you
want change in your family, you have to change some things for
the better or you will get the same results, the same old same old.
The Gospel today is a commentary on the importance God puts
on marriage and family life. Having experienced the wonder of the
birth of this child of mystery, born by the power of God’s Holy
Spirit, Mary and Joseph do not keep his presence to themselves
but, as faithful people of the Covenant, see to it the demands of the
Law are fulfilled. The question for you is, “How many of your
children are not baptized, confirmed, or have receive 1st commun-
ion? How many of your extended family or friends have not
helped their children received the sacraments, the teachings, and
the understanding of who God is and how much He loves them?’
As we celebrate this feast, let us invite the infant of Bethlehem to
bring his loving presence into our homes. Let Him bind us to-
gether, healing our rifts and allow us to give ourselves to our lov-
ing God and others. This is how we can truly be God’s Holy Fam-
ily, His Holy People. Amen….. Amen

Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Sunday in the Octave of Christmas
In the Gospel we do not find speeches on
the family but an event that is worth more
than any word: God willed to be born and
to grow up in a human family. In this
way, He has consecrated the family as the
first and ordinary way of His encounter with humanity.
During His life in Nazareth, Jesus honored the Virgin
Mary and righteous Joseph, being subject to their authority
during the whole time of His infancy and adolescence
(Luke 2:51-52). In this way, He made evident the primary
value of the family in the education of a person. Jesus was
introduced to the religious community by Mary and Jo-
seph, frequenting the synagogue of Nazareth.
With them He learned how to make the pilgrimage to Jeru-
salem, as narrated in the Gospel passage that the liturgy of
the day proposes for our meditation. When He was 12
years old, He stayed behind in the temple, and His parents
took three days to find Him. With that gesture, He led
them to understand that He had to "attend to His Father's
business," that is, to the mission that God had entrusted to
Him (Luke 2:41-52).
This Gospel episode reveals the most authentic and pro-
found vocation of the family: that of supporting each one
of its members on the path of discovery of God and of the
plan he has ordained for them. Mary and Joseph educated
Jesus above all by their example: From his parents, he
learned all the beauty of the faith, of the love of God and
of his law, as well as the exigencies of justice, which finds
its fulfillment in love (Romans 13:10).
From them He learned first of all that one must do God's
will, and that the spiritual bond is worth more than that of
blood. The Holy Family is truly the "prototype" of every
Christian family that, united in the sacrament of marriage
and nourished by the Word and the Eucharist, is called to
carry out the marvelous vocation and mission of being a
living cell not only of society but of the Church, sign and
instrument of unity for the whole human race.
Let us now invoke together the protection of Mary Most
Holy and of St. Joseph for every family, especially for
those in difficulty. May they be supported so that they will
be able to resist the disintegrating impulses of a certain
contemporary culture which undermines the very basis of
the family institution. May they may help Christian fami-
lies throughout the world to be the living image of the love
of God.

Being open to the Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Charismatic prayer meetings are gatherings to lift up the
name of Jesus, give praise to God, to proclaim and listen
to Scripture, prophecy, teaching, sharing, exhortation,
testimony and witness, and knowing the power of the
Spirit, to care for the needs of the community both small
and large through petition and intercession. They are
gatherings where even in the smallest of groups, Jesus is
there in the center.
BENEDICT XVI WANTS MORE
TEAMWORK WITH MOVEMENTS
Encourages Pastors to Value Contribu-tion of Charisms VATICAN CITY, OCT. 31, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Young ecclesial movements are a gift from God and their con-tributions should be valued and welcomed with trust, Benedict XVI says. "One of the positive elements and aspects of the communities of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal is precisely the importance given by them to the charisms and gifts of the Holy Spirit and their merit lies in having reminded the Church of the actuality [of these gifts]."
