April is Stress Awareness Month | Article courtesy of University of Michigan HealthHealthy Eating to Decrease StressYou can handle stress better when you are healthy, so eating nutritiously is a good defense against stress. The tips below focus on using nutrition to reduce the symptoms of stress.• Avoid or limit caffeine. Coffee, tea, some sodas and chocolate contain caffeine. Caffeine causes you to feel

“wound up,” which can make stressful situations more intense. If you drink a lot of caffeine, reduce intake gradually. Stopping use of caffeine suddenly can cause headaches and make it hard to concentrate.

• If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. If you are feeling very stressed, you might be turning to alcohol for relief more often than you realize. Limit yourself to 2 drinks a day for men and 1 drink a day for women.

• Make mealtimes calm and relaxed. Try not to skip meals or eat on the run. Skipping meals can worsen stress-related symptoms. You may get a headache or a tight, tense feeling in your stomach. Eating on the run can cause indigestion. Use mealtime to relax, enjoy the flavor of your meal and reflect on your day.

• Avoid eating to relieve stress. Some people turn to food to comfort themselves when they are under stress. This can lead to overeating and guilt. If this is a problem for you, try to replace eating with other actions that relieve stress, such as taking a walk, playing with a pet, or taking a bath.

SAC SpotlightCarlyn AmesI am a Senior Community Employment Program (SER) participant. I am a former college professor and world traveler. I produced & directed senior musicals with the Sisterhood Theatre group in Tucson and San Diego. MySisterhood Theatre group has performed in Las Vegas, St. Louis, Cincinnati and Baltimore. I retired from “the stage” and began working in the SER Program as a Special Events coordinator over three years ago. I find this work is a natural extension of my past work. I love working here at the SAC and don’t be surprised if I try to put you in a “show!”

5 Ways To Lower Your Gas And Electric BillDid you know there are simple ways to lower your energy bill? Check out these quick and easy energy-saving tips to help lower your bill while staying warm and comfortable.

1. Keep your furnace clean: Check furnace filters monthly and replace them every 3 – 4 months. A dirty air filter can increase energy costs and cause problems with your equipment.

2. Power off: Turn off lights, computers, TVs, gaming consoles and other electronic devices when not in use. Use a smart power strip to make powering off easier with the push of one button.

3. Don’t get burned by hot water: Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, if possible. You’ll save on energy and avoid scalding your hands and body.

4. Wash with cold water: Using warm water instead of hot can cut a load’s energy use in half; using cold water will save even more. Bonus – cold water helps your clothes last longer.

5. Stop the breeze: Caulk and weatherstrip around drafty doors and windows. Use a door sweep, door sock or towel at the bottom of doors with a gap.
