Bits n ClipsTHANK YOU – HENDRIKSEN

The family of the late Mary (Van Asseldonk) Hendriksen would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our relatives, friends, neighbours & community

who have supported us following the tragic & sudden loss of a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister & friend. The support, floral tributes, donations,

condolences, food, and the sharing of your special memories of Mary have been a bright light during this incredibly difficult time. We would like to

extend a special thanks to Father Simard, the staff at Sacred Heart Parish, Brock & Visser Funeral Home, and the Thamesford Community Centre for the many ways they helped us create a beautiful tribute to Mary’s life. The family is forever grateful to the first responders for their dedication to the community & the care they showed Mary & her grandchildren at the time of the accident. We are appreciative of the generosity of so many towards

the Homes for Hope & Ronald McDonald House charities. Homes for Hope holds an important place in Mary & Theo’s hearts and over the last fifteen years, several family members have travelled to the village of Las Lajas in El Salvador to help build homes. Through the construction of new homes & distribution of donated clothing, medical & school supplies, this organiza-tion has been providing relief to the area since 2005 following devastating

damage left by hurricanes & volcanic activity. In the midst of the heartache and tragedy we find comfort in knowing that

Mary saved the lives of her two grandchildren. May her last act of love and selflessness inspire us all to show more kindness towards one another.

Our sincere thanks, Theo, Chris, Steve, Amy, Erin & our families

THANK YOU ~ WEAVERThe family of the late Marie Weaver would like to extend our greatest

appreciation for the acts of kindness, cards, food delivered to our homes, flowers, online condolences & donations made in Marie’s memory.

We are very grateful to Greg Visser and all the staff at Brock & VisserFuneral Home for their care & compassion during our difficult time. Also, a

special thank you to Rev. Susan Cole for her comforting words. The Weaver Families

INSIGHTS INTO INDIGENOUS ISSUESIn light of what we are hearing in the news concerning the ongoing strug-gles of our Indigenous brothers & sisters, Knox United Church in Embro feels it is important to offer insight into some of these issues. Over the next few months, on behalf of Knox’s Mission & Outreach team, I will attempt to provide perspective on various Indigenous topics of interest. Have you had a chance to read some of the Residential School Survivors’ stories? Learning the truths about Residential Schools isn’t meant to make non-Indigenous people feel a sense of shame or guilt. It’s all about learning the truth so that hopefully, one day, Indigenous & non-Indigenous peoples can walk together in friendship, without discrimination & without inequi-ties, without one having more privileges than the other. It’s about learning about past wrongdoings, and not repeating them. Do you ever wonder why the Residential School system was allowed to continue for so long? Did no one ever question or protest the injustices & poor living conditions? In fact, there were reports of concerns; in 1863, Florence Nightingale pub-lished a ‘Sanitary Statistics’ report on the health of Indigenous students. In her report, she stated that “...we shall be within the truth in assuming the mortality of native children at school as double that of English children of the same ages...” Over 40 years later, in 1907, Dr. Peter Bryce, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Indian Affairs, submitted a damning report after receiving detailed statistics from principals of 15 of the 35 Residential Schools he had visited. From a total of 1,537 pupils, the reports showed a death rate of nearly 25%, with one school reporting as high as 69% death rate in ex-pupils. Almost invariably, the cause of death was reported as tuberculosis. Dr. Bryce reported ‘extremely inadequate’ ventilation & defec-tive sanitary conditions in the schools, appealing to the government to take action; however, his recommendations were not acted upon as they were viewed as being too costly. In 1922, following his retirement, Dr. Bryce wrote a booklet, ‘The Story of a National Crime: An Appeal for Justice to the Indians of Canada’, detailing his findings. It can be found here: https://archive.org/details/storyofnationalc00brycuoft/page/n3/mode/2up. On Aug 16, 2015, a plaque was unveiled at the National Cemetery of Canada in Ottawa, in honour of Dr. Bryce. Atlohsa Family Healing Services (https://atlohsa.com/) in London is a non-profit organization that provides com-munity members with Indigenous-led programming & services that offer holistic healing, education, shelter & support. You can support them by buying Christmas gifts, made by Indigenous artisans, through their online gift shop at: https://www.atlohsagifts.com/. United Church of Canada has established ‘The Healing Fund’, a grant that supports healing initiatives for survivors of the residential school system & its ongoing intergenerational impacts. Donations to this fund can be made through Knox United Church, either by etransfer to [email protected] using a simple se-curity question/answer (eg. What village is the church located in?) and entering ‘Healing Fund’ in the message section or by cheque, (with Healing Fund on the memo line) mailed to: Knox United Church, 116 Kincardine St, Embro, N0J 1J0. For tax receipt purposes, please include your name & address with either form of donation. Your support of this fund is greatly appreciated! Thank You! Blessings, Sharon Fraser, Mission & Outreach Committee, Knox United Church, 116 Kincardine St, Embro, [email protected] or 519-475-4060.

COUNCIL NEWS from MAYOR RYANAs I write this Nov 21, there is 1 active COVID-19 case in Zorra, 62 in Oxford, and 157 in Southwestern Public Health as a whole. The Township of Zorra has adopted a policy requiring that all members of Council, staff & committees be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This policy is in place now, and will be fully in effect Jan 1, 2022. At this time, 101 out of 102 (99%) of all staff and Council have been vaccinated, or will be fully vacci-nated, by Nov 30, , and will be 100% vaccinated by January. On Nov 29 at 7pm in the Thamesford District Recreation Centre come out and tell the TVDSB Rural Education Task Force about the importance of rural schools in our communities! The system is broken. We have the illu-sion of local decision-making because of property taxes & locally-elected trustees. But the reality is those dollars go off to Toronto & the decisions about local schools are made by unelected bureaucrats. School capac-ity needs are driven by development, and development is regulated by municipalities. That’s why municipalities are responsible for a communi-ty’s library, parks & recreation, fire & ambulance services. Communities should have the same say on schools: they are literally our communities’ future. As the Vice Chair of the Task Force we need to ensure that the Board hears from families in our rural communities first-hand about how our school board can better support their unique needs. The task force is made up of trustees, municipal leaders & community members. It was created 2 years ago to come up with ideas for the board’s rural-education strategy. I have worked personally with Trustees Arlene Morell, Meghan Ruddock & Sean Hunt on this initiative & have every confidence they are advocating for this.I expect housing to be a major issue for the foreseeable future. We have rapidly gone from “housing is expensive” to “housing is unaffordable” for many people. In Oxford County there are currently 2,500 people on a wait list for Affordable Housing, while 100 are housed. This does not mean that there are 2,400 unhoused people in Oxford, but it does mean that there are 2,400 people in housing that is unaffordable long term, or unsafe. Many of these people will end up unhoused. This is a complex problem that requires all levels of government, and the private sector, to address. In Zorra & Oxford we need to do more with zoning to not only allow, but encourage, & require smaller, higher density & more variety in housing. We need to make spaces in our settlement areas for taller buildings to ad-dress the housing crisis & stop sprawl into our farm fields. Oxford County is continuing the process of considering changes to land use policy in the “agricultural reserve”. County Planning Staff will be making presentations to area municipal councils in the coming months including Zorra on Dec 15. Please watch the Township website for that agenda & presentation. None of this is finalized yet, please watch for opportunities for input over the coming months. As always, please feel free to contact me on any issue:Marcus Ryan, Mayor, Zorra Township, Oxford County Councillor email: [email protected], Mobile: 519-301-1634.

WE APPRECIATE OUR SERVICE MEN & WOMENFor those who have been reading the Village Voice for a number of years, you may recall an article submitted by the Heroes Of Zorra in the fall of 2018. It was about a plane crash over Germany during WWII with 20 Ca-nadians being on board plus 3 staff, and all killed. James Ernest Allen from East Nissouri Township was one of those Canadians killed. Under the leadership of Eric Wieman, who works with the IG Heimatforschung Rheinland-Pfalz/Historical Research Community in Germany. The site of that crash was located in 2017. The area was meticulously searched. Pieces of plastic windows, tire fragments & small pieces of aluminum – some still with camouflage paint were just a few of the items recovered. The group worked on establishing a permanent monument right where the plan crashed down. They were also able to contact descendants of those fallen Canadians. This is when the Heroes Of Zorra were called upon. See earlier write-up from December 2018 on the HOZ web site. Due to the world-wide pandemic the scheduled event to commemorate the mon-ument & the 23 men who lost their lives had to be re-scheduled 3 times. Finally on Sept 25, 2021 the long-awaited event was held. Thank you to the kindness of Mr. Wieman the Heroes Of Zorra have been given permission to share with you a couple of links, posted on our web site, that will allow you to view the ceremony in German and also a shorter version that was provided in English. We hope you enjoy this little part of history brought closer to home. Contributed by Shirley McCall-Hanlon, Heroes Of Zorra Committee Chairperson.
