At the beginning of the year 2020, the Gene-ral Curia and the Congregation of the Mission began to carry out the work plan for the year: organizing official visitations of the provinces, planning the meeting for new Visitors, meetings of the various commissions, etc.

During the month of March, the General Council held the scheduled tempo forte which included the participation of the members of the Prepara-tory Commission for the 2022 General Assem-bly. It was at that time that we began to hear news about the spread of the pandemic, but that seemed to be a distant reality. Then the history of 2020, which we are well aware of, began to unfold. Many members of the Congregation as well as members of the many branches of the Vincentian Family died (also many family mem-bers and friends died as a result of COCID-19).

The year 2020 is not only unforgettable becau-se of the pandemic, but will also be remembered for various disasters, for example, the explosion

in Beirut, the hurricanes in Central America and the Philippines and social disturbances in many countries. We are also aware of the fact that war and hunger and poverty have become more severe and have thus become an even greater challenge for us who desire to respond to the cries of those men and women who are poor and suffering.

The cries of the poor were heard, and many ini-tiatives were begun in order to respond to those voices. In the Philippines, an organization “Vin-centian Helps” was begun in Manila and this pro-gram was eventually extended throughout the country. The General Curia, through Vincentian International Mission Services, developed a pro-gram “When did we see you” and $250,000.00 was distributed to twenty-five provinces in order to care for those persons afflicted by COVID-19. This enabled the confreres to develop contin-gency projects together with other branches of the Vincentian Family. The Homeless Alliance

ended the year with more than 50 projects in some 40 countries. It is hoped that, as Father To-maẑ Mavriĉ stated in his September 27th letter, all the members of the Vincentian Family will re-affirm their participation and commitment to the “13 houses campaign” so that by September 27, 2021 this program will be established in every one of the 180 countries where the Vincentian Family is present.

We have begun 2021 with many uncertainties, but also with much hope. On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of publication of Amoris laetitia, Pope Francis (on December 27th) called upon the faithful to celebrate a year dedicated to the family (March 14, 2021 – June 22, 2022). At the same time the Pope has called us to celebrate this year in honor of Saint Joseph and tells us:

How many people daily exercise patience and offer hope, taking care to spread not panic, but shared responsibility … people who like Saint Joseph go unnoticed because of their daily, di-screet and hidden presence. Nevertheless, St. Joseph played an unequaled role in the history of salvation. This honoring of Saint Joseph is a very Vincentian devotion.

We also began this year by remembering those confreres who died last year and also those con-freres who were ordained, confreres who beco-me a sign of hope. We pray that this year might be a time for spiritual renewal and for strengthe-ning our missionary spirit as we continue pre-parations for the 2022 General Assembly and as we continue to build a Vincentian vocational culture.

Pope Francis proclaims “Year of St Joseph”With the Apostolic Letter “Patris corde”

(“With a Father’s Heart”), Pope Francis re-calls the 150th anniversary of the declara-tion of Saint Joseph as Patron of the Uni-versal Church. To mark the occasion, the Holy Father has proclaimed a “Year of Saint Joseph” from today, 8 December 2020, to 8 December 2021.In a new Apostolic Letter entitled Patris corde

(“With a Father’s Heart”), Pope Francis descri-bes Saint Joseph as a beloved father, a tender and loving father, an obedient father, an accep-ting father; a father who is creatively courage-ous, a working father, a father in the shadows.

The Letter marks the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pope Pius IX’s declaration of St Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. To celebrate the anniversary, Pope Francis has proclaimed

a special “Year of St Joseph,” beginning on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception 2020 and extending to the same feast in 2021.

The Holy Father wrote Patris corde against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, which, he says, has helped us see more clearly the importance of “ordinary” people who, though far from the limelight, exercise patience and of-fer hope every day. In this, they resemble Saint Joseph, “the man who goes unnoticed, a daily, discreet and hidden presence,” who nonethe-less played “an incomparable role in the history of salvation.”
