How long the current gov-erning coalition in Israelwill hold up remains to be

seen. It seems that it may only be amatter of time before another elec-tion takes place. Whether a clearresult will emerge, however, isdoubtful, as the people remain ide-ologically divided into their respec-tive camps. That is probably thereason why no one is really push-ing for new elections.

When Jesus was born, the Jewishpeople were also divided into polit-ical camps, but the Romans had su-premacy in the country. That hadnot always been the case. It wasnot until 63 BC that one of the par-ties asked the Romans to intervene,following power struggles withinthe royal family. The Romans con-tinued to leave administration of

the country to the Jews who, how-ever, were now no longer inde-pendent.

Internal power struggles ragedinitially within the ruling family ofthe Maccabees (or Hasmoneans asthey are also called) until Herodmarried into the royal family andtook over leadership. The strugglefor power thus became even morecomplicated. Herod was an effi-cient and capable regent, but hefound himself in the midst of in-trigues that prevailed in the upperclass at the time. To stay in power,he was ready to use any and allmeans, even political assassination.

In this time of almost unbeliev-able political power struggles, Jesuswas born. At that point, Herodwas already a sick man, who knewthat he would not live much longer.

He was preoccupied with naming asuccessor. His wife Mariamne andtheir two eldest sons, who weresupposed to become his successors,were sentenced to death and exe-cuted for alleged conspiracy and at-tempted overthrow.

Amid this political turmoil andefforts to secure his succession,Herod suddenly had to hear thatwise men from the East were look-ing for the newborn King of theJews. This, of course, was a flash-ing red light: here he was going toappoint one of his descendants asheir, and now there should be an-other one who supposedly had justbeen born. He needed to take ac-tion, as was his way, so that succes-sion from within his lineage wouldremain guaranteed. We know fromthe Gospel of Luke how all thatturned out.

History shows the destructive in-fluence of obsession with power.Sadly, the saying, “Power cor-rupts” proves to be true over andover again. In this day and age,such matters seem to be handledwith more sophistication. But eventoday, we hear of murders perpe-

trated for political reasons. Whenwe look at the current political sit-uation across the world—with thetensions between East and West,between Left and Right—then wehave to say that the risk of abuseof power has not really changed,because man has remained thesame. Everyone declares to be act-ing for the good of the people, butunfortunately that is not alwaysthe case.

Now in December, we are againcommemorating the coming ofChrist the Messiah, as foretold bythe prophets. Hope of the return ofthe One who will establish theeternal kingdom of peace is in-evitably renewed. As it is writtenin Daniel 7:14: “And there wasgiven him dominion, and glory,and a kingdom, that all people, na-tions, and languages, should servehim: his dominion is an everlastingdominion, which shall not passaway, and his kingdom that whichshall not be destroyed.”

When Jesus was bornin Bethlehem, peo-ple worldwide were

in motion. A census of the worldwas being held, so that He couldbe born in Bethlehem in accor-dance with the Scriptures (Luke2:1-7). Nobody recognized thepurpose of the people’s move-ment at the time. To millions,it seemed like a pointless under-taking to make the arduousjourney to their hometown.And yet, everything had a deep,divine meaning. It wasn’tEmperor Augustus who causedthis to happen. No, the livingGod Himself was behind it.

The same is true today. Whatis the point of people’s world-wide movements? Everythingis in flux, and there’s greatunrest in the world. The divinemeaning behind it—God’s rec-ognizable, purposeful action—lies in Jesus’ return. His thronewill be built in Israel. Strangely

enough, people—their behaviorand their ways—are exactlythe same at the Lord’s first andsecond comings. There are sixcategories:

First, those who are asleep.Everyone was asleep whenJesus came. The closest neigh-bors didn’t even notice, andyet the King of kings hadarrived. It will be the samewith the second coming.Everything is asleep. It’s nowonder that the Lord warnsso often and earnestly, as inLuke 21:36, “Watch ye there-fore, and pray always, that yemay be accounted worthy toescape all these things thatshall come to pass, and tostand before the Son of man.”

We’re all in danger of beinganesthetized by the visible,material world. But the LordJesus promises those whostrive to keep watch, “Blessed

are those servants, whom thelord when he cometh shall findwatching: verily I say unto you,that he shall gird himself, andmake them to sit down to meat,and will come forth and servethem” (Luke 12:37).

Don’t underestimate the dan-ger of falling asleep! Matthew25:5 writes of the ten virgins(five wise and five foolish):“While the bridegroom tarried,they all slumbered and slept.”

But the Lord Jesus warns, “Andwhat I say unto you I say untoall, Watch” (Mark 13:37). Thisbrings us to the second categoryof people at Jesus’ first andsecond comings.

Second, those who are watchingand waiting. Significantly, therewere shepherds with theirsheep at Christmas. It isn’t adifferent kind of people whoare watching and waiting for

His coming now. They arethose who, as Peter put it, aregood examples of the herd;who feed the flock of Christ;who have grown in followingJesus; who have tasted thatthe Lord is good and kind;and who are now waiting forHim day and night.

It’s no coincidence that itwas shepherds with their sheepwho were awake at that hourof redemption’s history. I’dlike to say that shepherds arethose who are like Jesus, whosaid of Himself, “I am thegood shepherd: the good shep-herd giveth his life for thesheep” (John 10:11). The moreour attitude becomes like thatof Jesus (Phil 2:5), the morewe will longingly wait forHim, as well as watch.

Third, the theorists. At Jesus’ firstcoming, there were peoplewho knew everything aboutHis approaching arrival, fromthe perspective of dogma, rea-son, and theology. The wisemen from the East were given

precise information from themin Herod’s presence. Whenasked, “Where is he that isborn King of the Jews?” (Matt2:2), they answered, “In Beth-lehem of Judaea: for thus itis written by the prophet, Andthou Bethlehem, in the landof Juda, art not the leastamong the princes of Juda:for out of thee shall come aGovernor, that shall rule mypeople Israel” (vv. 5-6).

Did these people set out withtheir theoretical knowledge ofthe coming King? Did theyrush to Bethlehem too? Didthey also bring gifts to Him?Not at all! It’s inconceivableand yet true: due to their reli-gious self-conceit, there wasno longer any heartfelt urgeto seek the King themselves.

Even this year, there willbe many Christmas celebra-tions held by people whoought to know about theLord’s coming, and who areextremely receptive to a spir-itual atmosphere. Yes, thereare those who don’t see with

open eyes, even though theJews have returned to Israelfrom all the nations; eventhough the signs of the timesare calling louder and louder,“The King is coming!” Theseare people who haven’t receivedthe Bible into their hearts,despite knowing it. Bible knowl-edge without practical obedi-ence makes one cold andunresponsive to the Lord’s com-ing. Tell me, my brother andmy sister, are you awaiting Hiscoming with deep longing?

Fourth, the ones who see theKing. In Matthew 2:1, they’recalled “wise men from theeast.” Why were they wise?Because they were receptiveto His light. They followedthis light unswervingly, andthese ignorant Gentiles testifyto the religiously orthodox:“…we have seen his star inthe east, and are come toworship him” (Matt 2:2). Bysaying, “We have come,”they emphatically demon-strate their obedient faith.

They’re saying, “We’ve lefteverything because we mustsee Jesus.”

How shocking! The the-orists who were so close tothe light don’t see it. Bethle-hem is visible from Jerusalem,yet those in Jerusalem kneweverything and didn’t recog-nize Him. What a tragedy!“…The light shineth in dark-ness; and the darkness com-prehended it not” (John 1:5).

But the blinded Gentilesunderstood: they came fromafar and spared no expenseto see Jesus. When they sawHis star, they were delighted.Truly, many who were lastwill be first. To which do youbelong? Are you followingthe light? We learn from thisthat light isn’t religion, butJesus Himself. Later in John8, He calls out after an initialclash with the religious andself-righteous, “I am the lightof the world: he that followethme shall not walk in darkness,but shall have the light of life”(v. 12).

Fifth, the kings who refuse to stepdown. The news passedthrough Jerusalem: “The Kingthe prophets spoke about hasbeen born!” Then we read inMatthew 2:3: “When Herodthe king had heard thesethings, he was troubled, andall Jerusalem with him.”Why? Because he saw hiskingship threatened. He hadprevailed and built his throneover the dead bodies of oth-ers. He was a bloodthirstyman, who had even murderedhis own family to assert hisrule. It’s believed that CaesarAugustus once said that itwas better to be Herod’s pigthan his son. This cruel tyrantis an illustration of extremeself-assertion; there’s no roomfor another king. He fearedseizure of power from above.Herod was frightened. Every-thing was at risk: his poweras well as his wealth (hisannual income has been cal-

culated to be around 16.4million dollars).

Today, there are many“Herods” who are proud andmaterially-minded, despitebeing surrounded by, advised,and instructed by the religious.King Jesus is coming! Are youready to submit? Is He theLord, your King, in your heart?The “Herod” who doesn’twant a transfer of power isfrightened of the coming King.

Sixth, the heavenly-minded andpurified ones. They were at Jesus’first coming, and will also beat His second coming. Theyare the angels. Where the earthwas silent, the heavens exulted.Countless hosts of angelscheered in Ephrathah’s fieldsin Bethlehem: “Glory to Godin the highest, and on earthpeace, good will toward men”(Luke 2:14).

This praise came fromheaven. In this time, when the

King’ return is imminent (Eph2:6; Phil 3:20), the more we assertour heavenly position in JesusChrist through faith, the morewe’ll proclaim His praise. InEphrathah’s fields, praises to Godsounded from heaven towardthe shepherds. We read in Luke2:9 about the radiance of theLord’s angel: “the glory of theLord shone round about them.”Isn’t that touchingly beautiful?

What a message the angelshad! Why? Because they wereheavenly-minded and heavenly-natured. What a message, whata light, what an effect theirwords had, for the shepherdsfound Jesus! Oh, brothers andsisters, that you and I will bemuch more heavenly-mindedand heavenly-natured, as Colos-sians 3:1-2 says. This is the onlyway we will be a clear light ina dark night. Only this attitudewill allow us to lead people toJesus, who are truly waiting andasking questions (Luke 2:18).

Now I need to answer thislast question: Why was (and is)Jesus not eagerly awaited?

The answer is obvious. Hisfirst coming meant His becomingequal with us: “Wherefore inall things it behoved him to bemade like unto his brethren”(Heb 2:17a). Christmas isn’tjust an object wrapped in soft,romantic light; it’s a stark reality.It’s a representation of manthrough God as Jesus, born asa helpless child in a stable withanimals, when He lay there ina manger in deep poverty andweakness. It’s as if God wantedto say, “You’re in my sights, inthe way I’m now giving you mySon. There is a stable and nightin your heart as well. There ismanure and filth in you, but inthe midst of this darkness I givemy Son.”

That’s why people don’t wantHim, and they don’t want theCross, either. When Jesus hungon the Cross, it echoed throughthe universe: “And so you are,human; so corrupt, so lost.”The dazzling tragedy of Christ-mas is that you shine so manylights, and yet it often remainsso dark in your heart. You give

and receive so many gifts, andyet remain so poor. Duringthe Christmas season, youlong so much for security,community, and “home sweethome,” and yet remain sounspeakably lonely. Most ofthe people who plunge intothe Christmas rush wake updisillusioned and disap-pointed. Why? Hear the wordof the Lord: “Shall not theday of the LORD be dark-ness, and not light? even verydark, and no brightness init?” (Amos 5:20). This is aharsh word, but it’s necessaryfor you to finally be willingto affirm Jesus’ becoming likeus, and your own depravity.Then it will truly be Christ-

mas for you, because thenJesus will be King in yourheart.

We’re finding the sameimplications now at the Lord’ssecond coming. He’s eagerlyawaited by many believers,because His second coming(in the opposite sense) meansbecoming equal with Him.When He came to Bethlehem,He became like us. When Hecomes to take us, we mustbe like Him (1 John 3:2). Butmany believers haven’t pur-sued sanctification, didn’tbecome like Him, and werenot transformed into Hisimage. Therefore, they can’tlook forward to the Lord’sreturn either. They would liketo separate Christmas fromHis imminent coming entirelytoo much. But, isn’t He com-ing very soon? Will you belike Him then? Are you readyfor Jesus to come?

UAENormalization with IsraelThe signing of the agreement between Israel andthe United Arab Emirates is an extremely positivestep, and it’s very likely that it will lead in the nearfuture to a full-out peace agreement, includingdiplomatic ties, the opening of embassies, flightsbetween the two countries, bilateral tourism, andopen business relations. In other words—every-thing that takes place between countries that havepeaceful relations with each other.

There’s no doubt—and I expressed this in a recentcolumn—that Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed

bin Zayed’s decision required courage and might be thebreakthrough that could lead the way for other moderateMuslim Arab countries in the region to follow suit. It’s truethat there have been ties between Israel and the UAE forover 20 years. This matter, like others, did not begin duringNetanyahu’s term.

The normalization agreement involvedan unequivocal commitment by Israel torelinquish its unilateral annexation of ter-ritories in the West Bank, as well as tocommit to freezing building in existing set-tlements and to truly agree to the two-state solution as an opening to solvingthe Israeli-Palestinian crisis.

Moreover, the normalization agreementwas conditioned upon Israeli agreementto an extensive arms deal between theUS and the UAE, in which the latter wouldpurchase F-35 fighter aircraft with advancedcapabilities, as well as additional weaponssystems.

In simpler terms, Netanyahu’sannouncement that he opposes the armsdeal with the Emirates, has no politicallogic, no military justification, and couldcause UAE leaders to reconsider theirdecision.

How much simpler, more dignified andworthy for the State of Israel if we hadsaid from the beginning that the normal-ization agreement with the Emirates justifiesthe concessions we have made. Peace inexchange for refraining from annexation,freezing settlement construction andaccepting the two-state solution. An armsdeal in exchange for normalization.

TURKE YMore Precision-Guided Weapons andRockets Turkey is rapidly expanding its rocket-engine capa-bilities in an effort to build its weapons industry.

In recent years, Ankara has increased its capabilitiesin the defense sector by investing heavily in new

drones and missiles. It wants to achieve total independencefrom Western manufacturers. To this end, it has purchasedthe Russian S-400 system and is seeking to build its ownplanes, tanks, drones, missiles, naval missiles and othersystems.

In a speech, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogansaid Turkey is starting space trials for a liquid-propellantrocket engine, Anadolu state-run news agency reported.

Erdogan praised the defense company Rokestan for itsabilities. Liquid propellant is also used by Iran’s regime inballistic missiles.

Commentary: Mr. Erdogan can becategorized as a religious nation-alist, who would fit the motto,“Make Turkey great again.” That,however, can’t happen, becauseone cannot reverse time or history. Turkey has been leaning toward

the West—their legal system isbased on various European sys-tems, notably the Swiss Civil Code,and being a member of NATO.Erdogan took office as president

on 28 August 2014; he founded theJustice and Development Party(AKP) in 2001. Although Turkeyhas 83 political parties legally reg-

istered, the 24 June 2018 electionresult was a landslide victory forErdogan (52.59% of the vote). SinceTurkey is over 99% Muslim, andMr. Erdogan a right-wing religiouspolitician, he has large public sup-port.Many ask, what is his goal? We

repeat: “Make Turkey great again.”Problem: the word “again”; onecannot regress in time. What oncewas will never be.According to the Bible, part of

Massive Military Exercise Prepares for WarThe Israel Defense Forces completed its premierexercise of the year, a large-scale simulation of warin the north against Hezbollah and other Iranianproxies, and of a smaller conflict in the Gaza Strip.

Dubbed Lethal Arrow, the drill was meant to improvethe military’s offensive capability, specifically the

ISRAEL2,000-Year-Old Seal of GreekDeity FoundResearchers discovered a gem sealfeaturing a portrait of Apollo in thedrainage channel of the City ofDavid. It was found in archaeologi-cal soil that was removed from thefoundations of the Western Wallduring work on the ArchaeologicalSifting Project in Tzurim ValleyNational Park.

The oval-shaped gem is 13 mm.long, 11 mm. wide and 3 mm. thick.

Because it is an intaglio—having a designcarved into the upper side of the stone—its main function was a seal to be stampedon soft material, usually beeswax, for useas a personal signature on contracts, letters,wills, goods and bundles of money.

Although Apollo is an Olympian deity ofthe Greek and Roman cultures, it is highlyprobable that the person wearing the ringwith Apollo’s portrait was a Jew, accordingto the researchers, archaeologist Eli Shukron,Prof. Shua Amorai-Stark and senior archae-ologist Malka Hershkovitz.

too was a believer in the wordsMoses had spoken. Thus, weread: “Philip findeth Nathanael,and saith unto him, We havefound him, of whom Moses in thelaw, and the prophets, did write,Jesus of Nazareth, the son ofJoseph” (John 1:45). The reli-gious authorities, the scribes,priests, Levites, Pharisees, Sad-ducees, etc., believed the Scrip-ture too, but apparently only withthe intellect, not the heart. Thus,in their minds, Jesus could not

tory of promoting texts filed with

factual, historical and cultural

errors about Israel. This, the state-

ment said, was evident by the

2016 campaign to pressure the

publishers to drop Rev. Dr. Stephen

Sizer from its catalogues following

numerous controversies over his

appearance at anti-Israel confer-

ences.

Sizer had propagated numer-

ous conspiracy theories in the

past, such as Israeli involvement in

the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Hewitt, Rev. Dr. Mae Elise Cannon

and Rev. Dr. Munther Isaac all pro-

mote false and hostile narra-

tives—such as, that there is some-

thing inherently wrong with

the Christian faith, and that the

conflict in the Holy Land is Israel’s

It is books like these, Van Zile

explained, that lay the ground-

These are well-respected author-ities within the evangelicalcamp; but quite obviously, theydo not believe what they havelearned. We simply ask, whywould anyone, just impartiallyreading the Old and New Testa-ments, conclude that “there issomething inherently wrongwith Jewish sovereignty”?
